Two Macs - only one can connect to Airport at a time

Starting today, after 10 days of successful operation, when I came home I couldn't connect to my home (new "square" Airport Extreme) network with my Core 2 MacBook Pro. My wife was happily connected on her PowerBook G4.
Puzzled, I tried a few obvious things:
Airport OFF, Airport ON ... no joy
Logout and back in ... no joy
Restart ... no joy
Then I turned my attention to the Base Station:
Restart ... nope
Change to "None" security ... nope
Change back to "WPA Personal" ... nope
Humbled, I stopped and had dinner. My wife's G4 went to sleep, my Intel went to sleep. Now it gets interersting! My Intel woke up first and immediately joined the network -- I'm happy till I hear my wife say SHE can't get connected.
To make a long story short, I have two laptops on my desk, and only one can connect at a time! This is BIZARRE. Turn off Airport on either one and its buddy gets a connection immediately, and vice versa. Sleep the connected one and the other connects.
I am out of ideas.
Errors on the G4:
Feb 28 20:09:45 localhost configd[35]: WirelessConfigure: 88001003
Errors on the MBPro:
various 88001006 errors as reported by others in this forum.
Both Machines at all the latest updates; the MBPro has the new Extreme software installed from the CD that came with the new hardware.
I would welcome suggestions ...
MacBook Pro Core 2   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4)

Software Update is not offering me any Airport updates on the G4 (or the Intel).
The recent Airport Update, "AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001", is of course only for Intel Macs.
They could only be "trying to use the same IP address" if they were not configured to use DHCP, but they are configured to use DHCP, and whichever connects does get an address in the 10.0.1.[2-200] range so I think that's not the problem.

  • 2 Airport Expresses, only one can connect

Have 2 airport expresses....if I turn off password protection on the router, I can connect them both with zero issues through the airport utility.  As soon as I change back to password protection, I can only get one to be "seen" by the airport utility after factory resetting.  Any suggestions?  The router is a 2wire from Uverse.

Mmmm, when you go to set up the second one, you could connect it by ethernet to your computer to make sure it is seen.

  • Two user profiles on my iMac but only one can connect to the internet

    Hi,
I got the most recent upgrade for Lion and installed it.  I have two user profiles on my iMac and now, only one of them can connect to the internet yet both appear to have gotten the full upgrades.  Any ideas why this might be happening?
    Thanks!!

Does the Account that can not connect to the Internet have full Administative priveleges or is it a Standard Account. If Standard, check to make sure it is allowed to connect.

  • Two Macs, only one fully autheticates with MS proxy... any suggestions?

*+The short version:+* I have two Macs with identical settings, but after installing Security Update 2007-007 one will play streaming MPEG audio in iTunes (amongst other things) and one will not.
    *+The long detailed version:+*
I'm having a weird network authentication problem with two Macs that have identical setups. Both are behind a crappy corporate Microsoft ISA proxy server that has driven me nuts for years. They are both running identical systems (10.4.10), both have identical network settings and both are bound to Active Directory.
One Mac connects to the internet fine, while the other usually prompts for authentication or fails to connect with many apps. For example the Mac that works (let's call it Mac A) can connect to the iTunes Store and Microsoft AutoUpdate, while Mac B does not. In iTunes I would get the message “iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. You must log in to the proxy server in order to access the iTunes Store.”
The weird thing is that I could still listen to MPEG audio streams and access song names from the CDDB on Mac B (I have grown used to there not being true universal proxy support in OS X. Adobe CS2 Software Update will not work with a proxy that needs to authenticate, iChat has its own settings, and for a long time Mozilla with its built-in NTLM authentication was the only way besides IE that I could even get online before 10.4).
The problem for me is that after running Security Update 2007-007 I noticed that I can no longer listen to streaming music in iTunes on Mac B, but Mac A still works. That's when I noticed the other things that Mac A can connect to but Mac B does not, which is why this is starting to drive me crazy.
Things I've tried or checked to get Mac B to work:
-Set proxy to either IP address (Web Proxy (HTTP)) or Automatic Proxy Configuration, same problem on both.
-Both have identical Samba config file settings.
-Deleted all of my keychains and started fresh.
-I tried updating iTunes from 7.3.1 to 7.3.2, but no go.
-Both have the same time set (though they both cannot reach the time.apple.com server to automatically set the time. An error shows in the system.log).
-Tried creating a new test account on Mac B, but it has the same problems.
-Tried installing Authoxy 3.2.5 on Mac B to do the NTLM authentication, but I could never get Authoxy to connect. I get the following messages in Authoxy:
Fatal Error: unable to connect to talker socket. Errno: Interrupted system call
Couldn't open connection to proxy server. Errno: Interrupted system call
-I've tried running OnyX, Yasu and AppleJack to repair permission and clear out any cache that might be causing a problem.
-I've gone through the various log files to look for noticeable errors, but nothing seems to be coming up.
Network items that work on both Macs:
-Safari, Firefox, Dashboard Widgets, Software Update, Entourage, network drives
Another difference is that Firefox never prompts for username & password on Mac A, but does at startup every time on Mac B. The only way I can get around this is to manually create a Kerberos ticket and then Firefox will not prompt for authentication (Kerberos will not create a ticket automatically on both Macs, I read this was a bug with logging in to AD with an admin Mac account). But the Kerberos ticket does not help with my iTunes or other network problems.
If I've gotten all this to work, then why am I complaining? Because the streaming radio gets me through the day at work, simple as that.
I'm trying to be as detailed as possible so that I cover the bases and hope that maybe someone comes across this with a search and have found an answer or maybe have something new to try.
A big thanks for taking the time to read all of this and think it over.
    P.S. I hate you Microsoft.

    Aha! I've figured it out!
But not before resetting the PRAM and VRAM, re-installing 10.4.10 with the combo installer, and installing Wireshark to try and figure out what network requests were getting denied.
What did it was manually setting the IP address on the problem Mac to the IP from the Mac that was working. I came across this post (http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-25049.html) where someone said the fix for them was to be in a certain IP range. I had previously tried renewing the DHCP, but I had to manually set the IP to the specific address to get it to work. I figured it had to be something on the server side since, like I said, both Macs had the same exact network settings.
Thanks to everyone that took the time to read my first post, and sorry about the typo in the title. It was late and I was getting frustrated.

  • Airport Extreme & MacBook & MacBook Pro: only one can talk to Airport

I've got an Airport Extreme is in bridge mode and hooked via an ethernet cable to an SMC router. The SMC device is a wireless (and four wired ethernet ports) router. It's attached via ethernet cable to a DSL modem. All the settings on the Airport Extreme are for the it to be connected to a router and DCHP. I've also got two Airport Expresses to extend the range of the Airport Extreme. I have a Canon printer attached to the Airport Extreme.
In our home we have a black MacBook (10.5.6), a MacBook Pro (10.4.11), Pismo PowerBook (10.4.11), an Apple TV, an iPhone and wireless security web cam.
The problem is that either the MacBook or the MacBook Pro can go through the Airport Extreme to the internet. If the MacBook can go through the Airport Extreme, then the MacBook Pro cannot. If the MacBook Pro can go through the Airport Extreme, then the MacBook cannot.
All computers can get to the Internet via the SMC router wirelessly at the same time.
The Pismo, Apple TV, iPhone and web cam have no problem going through the Airport Extreme to the internet regardless of what's going on between the two MacBooks
No matter what, wireless printing works for all computers.
The MacBook is a "clone" of the MacBook Pro. Internet sharing is on for both MacBooks. Both have unique AirPort ID numbers.
After powering down the DSL modem, SMC router and Airport Extreme and then restarting everything (MacBooks, Airport Extreme, DSL modem) the first MacBook that I use to connect to the Internet always work and the other one never works.
I would like both MacBooks to be able to access the internet via the Airport Extreme.
What is the problem and what is the solution? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Note: This is a long (years) and ongoing problem and I've posted (over a year ago) before with no luck.

    Hi,
"Internet sharing is on for both MacBooks." Why is that? Try to disable Internet sharing on both.
Furthermore I understand that your SMC device is wireless enabled too. Make your configuration more simple by disabling that. Your Airport Extreme can handle that since it is bridged.
See if we can get somewhere.

  • Two Users, Only One Can Control Sound

I recently created a new user account for myself to fix a problem with Mail. Now I am unable to control the OS's Sound options (e.g., change volume, mute, etc.) when in the new user: the Sound option panel appears under System Preferences, but the volume slider and mute button are grayed-out.
The only way for me to change the volume is to switch to my old user account, which I don't use for anything else. I guess I could delete the old user account, but I'd like to find a fix for the sound control issue first.
BTW - I made my new user area the Administrator and revoked Administrator privileges for the old user area, and the sound problem persists...

  • I have two iPads and one is connected to the internet but my other iPad was connected then was not and since then I have not been able to add my internet back onto my iPad it only says cannot connect to the server any help would be great thanks

I have two iPads and one is connected to the internet but my other iPad was connected then was not and since then I have not been able to add my internet back onto my iPad it only says cannot connect to the server any help would be great thanks

If you are having WiFi problems it is necessary to isolate whether the problem is with your network or your iPad. Note: Do NOT consider your network to be blameless if some other devices can connect to it.
First, test your iPad on some other WiFi networks: a friends, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, etc.
If it works well there then the problem is probably with your network. Try restarting your WiFi router by removing power for 30 seconds. If that does not help check for a firmware update for your router. If none exists which corrects the problem consider replacing the router.
If your iPad does not function well on other networks it possibly has a hardware problem. You could try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings to see if that corrects the problem. If not, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple store for evaluation. They can provide a replacement if your iPad is bad.
If you need more help please give the make, model, and version of your WiFi router and how you have it configured.

  • Can I backup two macs onto one external time machine?

Can I backup two macs onto one external time machine drive? I am trying to do this over Wi-Fi.

Yes, the external drive has to be formatted correctly to HFS+ and shared to the network.
It doesn't matter how the second machine logs into the network but wireless back will be extremely slow as it will involve double hop wireless, I presume to a wifi router somewhere. For incremental backups this is no biggie but do the initial backup with the drive plugged into that particular computer or over ethernet.. gigabit for preference.
Pondini has some instructions as he has for most things.
    http://pondini.org/TM/4.html
Also look at Q33 where he lists using a shared drive on another Mac.
If you are planning using something other than wifi router give clear information about the network layout you have and hope to use.

  • 2 powerbooks, 1 APE; one can connect, but the other can't

I have two powerbooks and one Airport Express. One can connect to the APE, but the other can't. There were no problems earlier this evening, but it just stopped for some reason. Under "Internet Connect" it lists Aiport Power as "On", and it has no trouble finding the other computer when I turn on internet sharing, which leads me to believe that the airport card is working fine, but it seems to be a connection problem. Any ideas?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Does the PowerBook, having trouble connecting, able to connect to other Wi-Fi networks?
If so, let's double-check your AirPort settings on the problematic device...
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
    - Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    - Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
    - Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
    - Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • Two mac laptops, one iPhone and an iPod touch. Sync apps?

Hi there, between my wife and I, we have two Mac laptops, one iPhone and an iPod touch.  The iPod touch is new- is it possible to get the apps that have already been purchased for the iPhone, onto the iTouch?

    schmjorgen wrote:
but can i then only ever use both the iphone and itouch with that particular mac?
you can use home sharing to transfer media files (incl. apps) between the two Macs. if you and your wife use separate Apple ID's to purchase content, authorize the wife's machine for yours and yours for hers.
is there a way to make both portable devices work with both macs?
by design, iOS devices sync with only one library at a time.
i am hoping the "home sharing" feature will be the answer but so far i have not been able to make it work.

  • Booting two Macs from one external drive: 10.8 and App Store?

I boot two Macs from one external harddrive. Does this mean that when 10.8 is sold exclusively via the App Store and thereby linked to a unique hardware identifier, I am going to have issues with activation/authentification each time I switch machines? I have avoided the App Store since I discovered that an app I bought there, and which I really needed to open automatically on log-in, had to be manually re-activated with my Apple ID after every switch (so that I eventually deleted it and reverted to an earlier, non-App Store version).

    Welcome to the forum!
There are a couple of "solutions" to your problem.  The easiest, and possibly the best for you (although it is a bit slower) is to copy your catalog onto the external drive as well.
Then when you plug in the drive, you will always have your latest catalog for access.
The other way is to keep a local copy of your catalog, and copy it onto the local drive as a way to transfer it from one computer to the other.
This has the problem of possibly not being in sync, that is, you forgot to copy it over once and did some editing.  Then you would end up with essentually two different catalogs, instead of one in two places.
You can copy the catalog either with your OS, or you can "export as catalog" and specify the external drive as the destination.  Then, on your other computer, "import from catalog" and only take the meta-data settings (it's on the import dialog box).
Personally, when I'm traveling, I have my catalog on my external drive as well.  It just makes life easier, and I don't have to worry about it being out of sync, or losing it (and not the images).
So, I would go with the first method, at least to start.  To get your catalog over there, you can either export as catalog or copy it, either one will work.
You can find the location of your catalog file (if you don't know where it is) in the catalog settings menu prompt.  Both the location and the name will be displayed.
    Cheers!

  • Configuring PPP options for only one VPN connection

How do you configure PPP options for only one VPN connection that is using L2TP over IPSec? The built-in VPN client in 10.4.9 is failing authentication because it won't talk MSCHAP-V2 (this is the only authentication protocol I can use) with the server. I am able to establish a connection if I add the following to /etc/ppp/options:
    refuse-eap
    refuse-pap
    refuse-chap
    refuse-mschap
    require-mschap-v2
However, these options will affect all PPP connections. The preference file that contains the network configurations (/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist) also contains PPP options for each specific network service. After some searching around, I found that there are several keys that seem promising (MSCHAP2, etc.). But these keys take a string value and I have no clue what they should be. These keys are defined in SCSchemaDefinitions.h file.
    Any ideas?
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Brian,
I just tried to check all of ADDT´s "includes" files for any internal references (read: "require" or "require_once" statements) to the file "tNG_config.inc.php". So far I can only see this file referenced in the file "tNG.inc.php" (within the "$KT_tNG_uploadFileList1" array).
So what could this mean ? Maybe you´ll have to make copies of the the original "tNG.inc.php" as well and save them as, say, "tNG.inc_ital.php" file plus make sure that these copies internally point to a different "tNG_config_ital.inc.php" file -- because it´s always the first mentioned file which gets referenced from e.g. an ADDT login page (see the "Load the tNG classes" - part)
I want to use ADDT’s User Registration Wizard and I have looked at all the neat stuff in the Control Panel/Login Settings
The Control Panel will always update the main "tNG_config.inc.php" file, so any further modifications will have to become manually applied to the custom files you´re creating.
    Cheers,
    Günter

  • Two Macs and one USB drive?

Can two Macs share one USB drive at the same time? Is there some kind of networking gizzie that would allow this?

If you have a router like the AirPort Extreme - you attach the USB drive to the router and it shares the disk for you.
I know there are other Wireless Access Points and Routers that provide similar functionality, but not all routers do this.
It seems like you are looking for a NAS solution. Typically these are boxes with USB and ethernet ports that you simply install on the network. Right now - Leopard does not always play nicely with them.
Mine is a CoolMax 550 - and it is accessible via command line (terminal) and FTP but unreliably through Finder. Many people hope 10.5.2 resolves this type of issue but no one knows for sure.
Honestly with the price of storage so low - most people just add another drive. Each of my Macs has it's own backup drive on top of the one shared from my Airport Extreme. Storage is down near $0.30/GB or less.
The first time I bought a TB of disk, I spent over a million dollars (thankfully not my money). Today I have over 5TB at home.

According to your title, do you mean you only one checkbox is required to check?
And the code, it seems not clear to me. What is Paramlst2 stand for?Which control did you use ?
Could you help provide more information? It would be better to help us to understand your issue.

  • Mac Client that can connect to Terminal Server Gateway

Anyone know of a Mac app that can connect to a remote computer via a Terminal Server Gateway?  The Windows version of MS Remote Desktop will do this but of course that is Windoz only.

You could try CoRD.  I don't know if it has the TS gateway option either, but it is an RDC client.
