Two Macs Running Leopard Backing up to External HD, ONE BIG PROBLEM...

Hi Folks,
Hoping you can help me out. I have an intel imac and a PPC PBG4 both running leopard. I bought a 500gb hd to use TM to back up to. I connected the PBG4 directly via firewire 400 and did my first backup and it worked fine. I then was disconnected the PBG4 and connected the imac via firewire 800 to do a back up, it worked fine. Then was told I could keep the imac connected and back up the PBG4 via my network by mounting the drive from the imac. But the tranfer rate was misrable slow and in fact I came up with an error message stating it lost the connection to the drive and so I decided this wasn't the best option. But I am not wondering what is the best option. I am a newbie to macs, so I might be missing something small that could make a big difference in the transfer rate. Will I really be stuck mounting and unmounting the drive and connecting and disconnecting cables??? please help

If you're just running a cat5 cable from the Ethernet jack on one machine to the other, it won't work. You'll need a crossover cable. Then you'll need to make sure each Ethernet interface has a unique address on the same network, which must be different from the network you're on via wireless, by the way. Or you could just buy yourself a cheap hub (same rule applies to the network addresses.
You shouldn't have problems with what you want to do due to partitioning or anything else based on what you describe. The problem is the wireless network that's being used by who knows how many devices. If someone maxes out the bandwidth for a second while a backup is running, TM (and many other things) will choke.

  • Network problem - two Macs running Leopard won't connect or share

We've just bought a refurbed Mac book Pro since our HP notebook is so bloody unreliable and I suspect is about to cark it through overheating/inadequate cooling. The only problem is that networking it with our G5 is turning into a real nightmare, and embarrassingly both the HP and an old desktop PC can not only see and share with each other they can also see and be seen by both Macs and use the printer connected to the G5, and absolutely everything connects to the internet and shows up in the DHCP list on the router. Even more annoying was that the Macs connected initially this morning when we got the Macbook Pro out of the box, but after we'd done the initial round of software updates (10.5.2 was installed on the MBP) we've had nothing but trouble. Quite often they'd be in the shared list in the Finder window but wouldn't connect when clicked. Other times they wouldn't be there at all. We've even tried connecting the two over firewire, which worked for the G5 but not the MBP although the MBP could see the folders on the external hard drive we use for Time Machine backups of the G5.
File sharing is on for both Macs (and printer sharing for the G5 obviously), AFP is enabled, firewall settings have been moved to Allow All... everything looks right but it doesn't work right. Right now I've managed to get the G5 to connect to the MBP using the Go>Connect to Server method mentioned elsewhere here, but it's one way only. It didn't work when we tried it on the MBP.
The network is part cabled, part wifi. We've got a Motorola Surfboard cable modem/gateway/wireless router, both notebooks are connecting wirelessly, both desktops are cabled. If it makes any difference both Macs are on 10.5.5, the old desktop is Win2K (please don't laugh) and the HP notebook is Vista.
    Any suggestions?

Well, it all seems to work now though I can't explain why and have no idea if it would work for others generally. But what we did, having reinstalled 10.5.2 and got the MacBook Pro back to exactly how it was when it arrived, was to install one update at a time checking that the two Mac could still communicate after each stage and with regular backups to be extra safe. The order we did the updates in was:
    Airport Utility
    Remote Desktop Client
    iTunes
    Front Row
    Mac OS X Combined
    Migration and DVD/CD Sharing
    Java
    Airport Extreme
    QuickTime
    QuickTime H.264 Compatibility
    Security Update
    Safari
Maybe the order doesn't make a difference, I really wouldn't know. But then it doesn't make sense to me that updating one item at a time would make a difference either. However, we now have the network working properly with the same network settings used before when it was hit and miss at best. Glynn, maybe it's worth giving it a try on yours though without a clue why it's now working here I couldn't call it a solution as such.

  • Networking problem from Mac running Leopard to Mac running Yosemite

I have a curious networking problem and I would love some suggestions about what might be causing the problem and how to cure it.
I have a PowerMac G5/1.8DP running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard with a number of external drives attached that I use as backup for all my RAW files. These are mirrored on three drives.
When I mount the drives on my iMac desktop, running OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite, over a gigabit ethernet network, two things are happening - 1. some of the folders are invisible (although they are actually there and populated on the PowerMac) and 2. spurious, empty, folders with odd names appear on the Yosemite desktop.
I have checked on the PowerMac to see that the folders all contain files - they do - yet over the LAN they appear as empty folders with gobbledygook names. This happens on all my Macs running Yosemite so it appears to be a Yosemite problem, rather than a Leopard problem. To further reinforce that I have also checked the PowerMac from three other Macs, running Tiger and Leopard, and they can see exactly what is on the drives, with no missing folders or oddly named folders.
The images show 1. the folder as it appears on the PowerMac running OS X 10.5.8, with two folders RAW Files 26 and RAW Files 28 highlighted, 2. the same folder seen on the Yosemite desktop with two folders, RAW Files 26 and 28, missing and 3. the same folder on Yosemite with three oddly named empty folders.
I am at a loss to know how to cure it and hope that someone will be able to help.

You can never, never, never transfer any installed version of PSE on any platform. You must always install from scratch on a new machine. By trying to do so you have made more work for yourself. You will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
which will not seem to do anything, but is a necessary step to break the links within the program. Then you can go around and manually remove everything related to PSE that you can find, not only from Applications, but also from your username>library>preferences and the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe. You must go to these locations manually; spotlight will not help you with this type of search.
Then you can reinstall from your original media or from the download here:
    Download Photoshop Elements products | 13, 12, 11, 10

What program can be used to open windows pagemaker files on a Mac running Leopard?

None. You'll need to install Windows on your Mac.

  • WIndows XP/Vista can not recognize shared folder on Mac running Leopard

    Hi,
I have problem with sharing file from my Mac running Leopard to my Windows machine (running XP and Vista). I follow the instruction on this website. http://lifehacker.com/software/mac-os-x-leopard/leopard-simplifies-networking-31 7033.php
My Windows machine 'see' the Mac. When i double-click or press enter on the Mac comp icon on my windows machine, I do not get any confirm box to enter username and password. Instead, I am allowed to view the content which is empty ( although I enabled some shared folder on my Mac)
Any suggestion to solve the problem pls .

If your Mac Pro has FileVault on, your Windows XP machine will not be able to access the files, as FileVault disables SMB and printer sharing for Windows XP clients.
In case FileVault is not on, you could try temporarily disabling the Windows firewall and the anivirus and/or internet security suite on the WinPC, and see whether it can access the files on your Mac Pro.
    Good Luck.

  • I have two macs running lion.

I have two macs running lion. Can I wirelessly transfer files from one to the other or do I need to move files to a USB device? I thought therre was a mac program that did that.
    Thanks

AirDrop is not necessary, it merely makes it more seemless.
You can use simple file sharing over any Mac network:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1549
Note gigabit ethernet is fastest, Firewire 800 is next, then is Firewire 400, then is 802.11n, and 802.11g for networking. I would not have an 802.11b or 802.11a network unless you aren't anywhere within 1500 feet (500 meters) of someone who could sniff out your network, as wireless security at those speeds is easily breached.
If you have Firewire 400 or 800 cables and the supported ports, Target Disk Mode is a lot easier to setup for moving files around:

  • Firefox problems on one of two Macs running Mountain Lion

I just upgraded to Mountain Lion on my two Macs. On the MacBook Air using Firefox 14.0.1 some pages in "my account" at Amazon's site and the my.yahoo.com portal (when signed in to the account) are wonky. '''Note: the portal page of my.yahoo.com looks fine if you are not signed in. It only gets jumbled if you're trying to view the custom home page for your account.''' The same is true of Amazon. the general site looks fine; it's only when you try to view deeper pages, such as "my account." I've seen similar problems at a few other sites, as well. All sites are fine in Safari. Text overlaps paragraphs, images missing, etc.
No problems on the MacBook Pro, also running Firefox 14.0.1

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

  • Two macs running garageband at the same time

Hi. I am using GarageBand on two Mac's at the same time and would like to know how I can record both parts of the tracks, I guess I'll have to use an external recording device of some sort but I do not know which or how I would set this up. Basically, I am playing a part of the song on one Mac and the other part on the other Mac and would like the two Mac's to be liked up to a seperate recording system so I can record the mix, hopw someone can help, thanks.

The biggest problem you are going to have is sync. There is no way to keep these two computers in sync unless you hook up some kind of KVM USB splitter for your keyboard. Both machines would need to be identical in setup or this will not work. Playback and record buttons need to be pressed at the exact same time. The mouse can be used to trigger events (such as record enable) to each computer. It is not a very elegant or pragmatic way of gaining more tracks.
The better way is to use a dual G5 with a big monitor.

  • Cannot use File Sharing Between Two Macs Running tiger

I have a G3 Desktop and a Platinum powerbook connected wirelessly using an Airport Extreme. I used to be able to easily share files between the two Macs but since upgrading to Tiger on both machines and loading the latest software upgrades and Airport firmware, running Disk Utility, setting preferences to turn on AppleTalk and file sharing, file sharing does not work. It worked one time after downloading the new Airport firmware but now I cannot find the other computer on the Airport network. There are only two computers on the Airport network. Does anybody have any ideas?

Problem solved by reading the reply to dkolenda's post earlier today. I turned off UDP traffic blocking inthe firewall settings and now both computers can see each other and share files.
    Thanks!

  • How to see my PC's/ Macs in my workgroup from my Mac running Leopard

I am having trouble viewing any other computers (PC's and my G3 iMac) from my Quicksilver running OS 10.5. In previous versions of OS X I would click on the network icon on the left side of the finder window and I could see them, but now that's no longer there in the Leopard finder.
Using the other method (going to "Go", "Connect to Server", then "Browse") nothing shows up. It is the same on my G3 iMac running Panther, but when I click on the Network icon in the Panther Finder, I see a Folder with the name of my workgroup and inside it are all of my computers).
So basically, how do I view my workgroup computers in Leopard? BTW, all computers have file sharing enabled.

    Hi,
In Leopard in System Preferences > Sharing With File Sharing selected go to the Advanced Button.
    Is SMB Enabled ?
Also is the Finder's Preferences set to the Share items marked with the Red Info ?
Lastly, on the Windows Machines is Sharing Enabled (i.e Can the PCs see each other ?) If the PCs can not see each other then it is unlikely the Macs will "see" them.
(Just covering bases with this one - you seem to imply this but don't actually state it)

  • What to do with old mac running leopard

what should i do with this emac? i don't need it for a file server or anything like that.
    any ideas?
    eMac G4, 700MHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB HDD, DVD/CD-RW
running 10.5.1 (yes, Leopard, it runs faster than tiger, even on 700MHz)

The eMacs are great for oldies. The tray loader is far easier to use with shaky hands than a slot loader.
If the eMac doesn't owe you anything try the local superannuitants clubs or Old folks homes.
No one is going to wander off with it under their arm and the screen is easy to see and clean.
Otherwise a young family could give it a good home.
I loved my eMac it's now being used by a young family with Tiger installed.

  • 2009 Mac running Leopard

I teach online, and one of my students has continual tech issues when we're doing Skype video. Is the computer possibly not strong enough/not enough memory/whatever (I'm ignorant!) to handle it? The mom has had it checked out at Apple, and there doesn't appear to be a problem. I don't think it's my Mac, because I don't have the issues with any of my other kids.
Or maybe it's simply her internet connection?

Thank you. Wrote the mom for clarification. She was wrong; it is Snow Leopard. This leaves me thinking that it has to be her connection...yet she says they're almost never down, and the internet is lightning quick. I guess I have to let the poor kid go. I teach kids online who've failed reading in school, and need special help. But I can't help if we keep losing our connection. Very sad.

  • Concurrent sessions on a Mac running Leopard

    Hi
Is it possible to have two people working on a same machine one log in locally and the other remotely?
Like you will do in a windows server.
    Regards

Go to System Preferences > Sharing and enable File Sharing. Do this for both computers. All shared computers will appear on the Finder windows under Shared.
Click on the name of the computer you want to access and then press the *Connect As...* button. On the dialog box that comes up type your password to authenticate and press Connect. That's it.

  • Problems installing lightroom 4 on mac running leopard osx 10.5.8

When I insert disc, I can open the disc, showing the lightroom 4 package, and the readme file. When I double click the package, nothing happens. When I open the installer, and click on the disc for lightroom 4, nothing happens. Help?

Well, the upshot is that my husbnd is the proud owner of a new macbook. Lightroom wasn't the first thing he hasn't been able to upgrade, so this was just the excuse he needed ;-). We got a good deal on a demo of last year's model.
