Two Macs, Same network - one cannot make video chat connections

My iMac and my MacBook are on the same network. The iMac has no problems making video chat connections, the MacBook cannot make them at all.
I've used two different accounts on both machines - both work on the iMac - neither works on the MacBook.
I've deleted all the iChat preference files, I've adjusted the bandwidth and streaming preferences in iChat and Quicktime.
I've swapped IP addresses on the two computers, I've tried both fixed IP addresses and DHCP addresses.
Since the iMac is working, it's obviously not a firewall or router issue - I'm not doing any port forwarding to the iMac.
I can make a video connection between the two machines using Bonjour, but not over the internet.
Here's the output of the error message:

  • Two Macs same network

My queston is this. My roomamte and I each have a mac using the the internet, I know there is a way to have access to each others hard drives through the internet. I am just unaware of how to do that. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Easiest method is to access each other over your network. I am going to assume you have a router or apple basestation, since you both have access to the internet. Simply turn on sharing in your prefs, then choose the network item in the sidebar of a finder window, and you will see each others computer. There are articles with more detail available thru Apple...search their tech info.

  • ITunes is extremely slow and I cannot make a secure connection

When I connect to iTunes my computer is extremely slow, and when I try to connect to the iTunes store I get the error message cannot make a secure connection.  I have internet access and I have ran the iTunes diagnostics test and all the tests passed except making a secure connection.  I have disabled all of my security systems including my firewall and Norton.  I am not running any proxy settings.  This has been an ongoing problem for over a month and I am at a loss.

Check out this Apple article -> iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows)
Configure Internet Options (for Windows computers only):
Run iTunes Diagnostics. If the "Secure link to iTunes Store" section does not pass, do the following.
    Open Internet Explorer.
From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
    Click Connections.
Under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Networking," choose "Never dial  a connection." It may not be possible to choose this if you’ve never used  dial-up Internet; if this is the case, skip to the next step.
    Click LAN Settings.
In the window that opens, enable the option to "Automatically detect  settings" if it is not enabled.
iTunes uses Internet Options proxy settings. Apple recommends  removing proxy settings that interfere with access to the iTunes Store  if needed.
    Click OK.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Security section and look for the option to "Check for server certificate revocation." If it is enabled, disable it.
Look for Use SSL 3.0 and Use TLS 1.0. Make sure at least one of  those two checkboxes is selected and click OK (You can select both checkboxes).
Apply any changes, and restart your computer if you modified the option to "Check for server certificate revocation" (step #11).

  • Messages, cannot do video chat/screen sharing

I have a Arris TG862 router, I tried the port forwarding from 80 to 16403, before this on CONNECTION DOCTOR, it said on "router type : port restriced" but now after I did the port forwarding, it says FULL CONE. but I still cannot do video chat or screen sharing ...the other person who I'm trying to connect also did the port forwarding as me.
    what else can i do?
    Thank you!!

    Hi,
Which Account are you trying to Screen Share with ?
An AIM to AIM connection or a Jabber to Jabber connection will use random ports for the Screen "Video" part.
Only the Audio Only chat that is along side that is on port  16402.
Basically this In-App Screen Sharing that has been there since iChat 3 uses the Apple Remote Desktop engine to do the Screen Sharing but make a  VNC connection along side the Audio only chat.
In Yosemite the iMessages account can invoke the Screen Sharing App itself (You need to Enable System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing for this).
This also uses the Apple Remote Desktop engine but in an App that is tucked away in System/Library/Core Services/Applications.
In the System Preferences > Sharing you cannot have Remote Management and Screen Sharing enabled at the same time  (They both use the Apple Remote Desktop App/Engine).
If you router can us UPnP you may find it easier to use that.
This allows the apps (computer) to tell the router which ports to open and on most devices they close after a period of non use.
On some you can also set how far ways devices can see the UPnP (Hops) and also alter the delay until the ports close after non use.

  • "Cannot Start Video Chat" error when trying to do video conferences

    Ahoy!
I've recently upgraded to a new still camera that unfortunately doesn't work with iChatUSBCam, so I invested in a nearly-new iSight to use with my PowerMac G4 instead. Although one-way video chat conferences work fine, I keep getting the error "Cannot Start Video Chat" whenever I try to do a video conference.
    The full error message reads:
    "*Cannot Start Video Chat*
Your computer is not capable of initiating a multiperson video chat.
Click Text Chat to invite the selected people to chat."
There are no error codes or any other text in this message. The available buttons are the purple ?, 'Text Chat' or 'Cancel'.
I have tried this on both my 1.25ghz PowerMac G4 and my 1.33ghz PowerBook G4, and my friends I am trying to chat with have tried to initiate the conference on their 2.16ghz Intel Core Duo MacBook and MacBook Pro, only to receive the same messages too.
When doing a one-way videochat, the + button to add more people to the conference is greyed out for all of us as well. We all display the video conference button (camera with the extra pages behind it) next to our names on our buddy lists though, so our computers all believe we're capable of it!
When clicking the ? button on the "Cannot Start Video Chat" dialogue, it brings me to the help page that tells me:
+"To join a multiperson video conference, you need any G5 computer, or a 1 GHz single processor G4, or a dual processor 800 MHz G4, and a broadband connection to the Internet.+
+To host a multiperson video conference, you need any G5 computer, or a 1 GHz dual processor G4. In addition, you need an Internet connection that supports a minimum download bandwidth of 384 Kbps, and a minimum upload bandwidth of 384 Kbps."+
Both of my machines are above 1ghz G4s, so according to this help file, it shouldn't prohibit me from at least joining a conference when I'm not the host, but both of my Intel-based friends get the same message when trying to host as well. We are all on respectable Broadband or Cable internet connections, so that shouldn't limit it!
Anyone got any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? I see no reason why this shouldn't work!
    Thanks!

    Hi
First have you all set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
    Restart iChat.
Do a speed test on all sides and tell us the UP AND DOWNload speeds http://www.speedtest.net/

  • IOS 5 used to allow Airplay between iPad (WiFi) and Apple TV (Ethernet) as long as they were on the same network. In iOS 6, now both the iPad and the Apple TV have to be on the same network and both have to be connected using WiFi ? Why did they change ?

iOS 5 used to allow Airplay between iPad (WiFi) and Apple TV (Ethernet) as long as they were on the same network, i.e. connected to the same wired/wireless router. In iOS 6, now both the iPad and the Apple TV have to be on the same network and both have to be connected using WiFi ? Why did they change this ? Means that the iPad and the Apple TV box both have to be in range of the wireless router when this wasn't a restriction before. Apple TV could be anywhere as long as it was connected to the same wireless router via ethernet cable. Seems like an unnecessary thing to restrict.

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem.  The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6.  (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

  • "Cannot play video - The Connected display is not supported" error message using Netflix 5.0.2 on my iPad

I'm running iOS 7.0.3 on my iPhone 4S and iPad (3rd gen) and have just upgraded to the current version of the Neflix app available in the Canadian App Store (5.0.2).
Although all other apps I've tried (e.g. Podcast, VLC) are able to properly output video & audio directly to my TV using the HDMI adapter (i.e. NOT via an Apple TV), the Netflix app pops up the error message "Cannot play video - The connected display is not supported".  If I start a video and then plug the HDMI cable in, it will play for a few seconds and then halt with the same error message.
Netflix & Apple were supposed to have been working together to fix the previous issue with this scenario which was causing audio to be output but no video.  The current Netflix app update was released yesterday and seems to have taken a step backward.
When I contacted Netflix support, they indicated that they have done whatever can be done from their side and this is now Apple's issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Kiron

    Hello all,
I have an iPad 2 16GB with iOS 7.0.3 and Netflix version 5.0.2. I cannot watch netflix on an External LCD monitor that I have through VGA out. I use bluetooth speakers, so the AirPlay is going to that for Audio. Before this update, this combo worked without an issue.
So as of Friday Nov. 8/2013, I contacted Netflix support, and they said they fixed the problem on their end, and the fix is on the Apple side of things, and to contact Apple support.
So, I contacted Apple support, and the first person I spoke to said I would have to agree to pay a $35 fee for 30 days of support to this problem since my unit is out of warranty. I said this isn't a hardware issue, it's a software issue, and I'm not willing to pay to fix a problem you created. So I got a Senior Level advisor on the line, and she was helpful, and she's looking into the issue for me and said she'll contact me sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday (Nov. 12 or 13) to let me know of the issue.
Here's the thing: this is a combination of Netflix and iOS not working correctly with any of the Apple Authorized Dongles. This is truly a code error that some hot shot programmer had major oversight on, and their management didn't catch it either. There was no reason for Netflix to rush to get this Netflix update going until Apple sorted out the bugs in iOS 7.
Anyway, if I hear anything from Donna (the advisor), I'll post it and let you guys know. In the mean time, good luck!

  • Allowing two Macs to see one share via fibrechannel

    Hi,
I would like to setup an xServe + XRAID to share one volume with two Macs. I thought I will be able to see/write/read to one drive from both machines using fibre channel cards in each Mac. I don't need to write at the same time to the same file. But I do need to connect to the same folder or drive and manipulate other files at the same time.
I am getting different answers from a couple of tech people. Some say it's impossible without Xsan and don't think other software solution is reliable enough. Apple Business sales person says it's possible. His solution is like so:
    A. XRAID connected to Xserve via fibre card.
    B. Xserve fitted with two fibre cards - one card connects with two cables to XRAID. The 2nd card connects via one cable to one G5 and via the 2nd cable to the 2nd G5.
So if I have only two machines that need high-speed connection to the raid I can avoid using a fibre switch and he promises this will work.
Anyone has a setup like this? If the above doesn't work what's my best solution. Is Charismac fibreshare a good solution compared to Xsan?
    Any guidance will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    A.

It sounds like your Apple business sales person could
use a little education on the matter.
I'm confused and baffled on the suggestion to have 2
FC cards in the Xserve and use that for bridging. It
will not work, and it is not supported.
To have two Macs see the same volume, you need a
fibre channel switch. However, without software to
manage reading and writing, they will corrupt the
volume, as fibre channel is a block-level protocol,
and does not support locking primitives (file systems
like HFS+ support this for single machines, and
network file protocols like AFP, SMB, and NFS do it
    for sharepoints and multiple machines).
So, for multiple systems to access the volume at the
same time, you need a SAN file system. Most of them
(Charismac's FibreShare, FibreJet, etc.) have "volume
level locking," which means one machine can write to
the volume at a time. This is the WHOLE volume, so
if one of the users is writing files, ANY files,
nobody else can do anything but read. This is a
pain, because if user #2 wants to write, an
administrator must remove user #1's write privileges
before he can write anything. Xsan is a "cluster
file system" and supports file-level locking, which
means you can do exactly what you want.
I will note, though, that Xsan is a bit complicated
to set up, and it really does demand you know what
you're doing, and that you "do it right." To set it
up right, you're talking a minimum of $30K in
equipment and software. You need a dedicated
metadata network, I STRONGLY recommend both a primary
and a backup metadata controller that do almost
nothing else (both would be Xserves), and you should
probably set up Open Directory as well, as it
simplifies things. So we're not talking easy here,
and we're not talking cheap (in the absolute sense of
the word -- though most of the solutions Xsan
competes with are 5 to 10 TIMES its cost).
So what do you get, then, with Xsan? You get
flexibility, and more importantly, you get SPEED. If
you are doing high definition video, with multiple
edit stations, then Xsan is your ticket to
    salvation.
If you don't need Xsan's speed (and by speed, I mean
with HUGE, sequential files), then just setting up
AFP on an Xserve that's connected to an Xserve RAID
will give you very good performance (say, 50+
MB/sec), with none of the complexity, at
substantially lower cost. I didn't see your original
motivation for having the volume shared directly via
    fibre -- what's driving it?
Thanks for your detailed response. I am learning a lot this week... I am baffled as to why an Apple certified person will claim we can connect two machines to see the same share. He also said that Xsan is needed only we want to work on the same file as the same time - not the same share. To answer your question: I was hoping to gain substansial speed improvement by switching our office from Ethernet to Fibre channel. We have an opportunity to upgrade our current system and have the budget for Xserve+xRaid. I was not aware of the file level limitation that fibre channel presents without Xsan. We do some video editing (DV only at the moment) but mostly graphic design (web+multimedia). We deal with large and small files on a daily basis. We currently share files via a simple NAS ethernet solution (infrant ReadyNAS) which provides reasonable performance. However I feel the system is lagging behind compared to having files stored on a local SATA drive. I was hoping that by investing close to $20K we will upgrade to larger, more durable drives as well benefit from faster connection. I also thought this will also allow us to edit from two or three stations directly to the RAID instead of sticking with one dedicated machine. I wanted the video files to be on one big share. so when an editor is done with final cut pro I can work on the same file in Motion or compress to Flash Video, etc. without copying to another drive.
To summarize I was hoping to create a simple NAS with faster speed. But the more I read about this it looks like we need Xsan but that it is too complicated for a small firm. We are also interested in xserve so we can work via ARD remotely if needed.
The way I see it we can do one of three things:
    1. get Xserve+Xraid and have fibrechannel only between them. get a good gigabit router and have files shared by all. I don't know how much faster this will be compared to our current NAS solution but it sounds like we will see some improvement. (we currently all are on gigabit network but I am not sure if the router supports jumbo frames, if all the cables are right, etc.)
    2. get Xserve+Xraid and have fibre channel between the two as well as add a fibre channel card card to one G5 tower. enjoy faster speed on that machine but dedicate a drive that is outside of the main NAS setup - do we need that for dv footage? perhaps just for capturing. It sounds like we can edit footage using ethernet connection but I am not sure if that will sustain capture rate.
    3. risk it and follow what the apple rep said: try to see the share from two machines without fibre switch - either it works or return the extra fibre channel cards.
It sounds like the current version of Xsan is too complicated for us. The question is how much speed we can get via ethernet and should we try to make one machine a dedicated video unit.
    Thanks.

  • Mac to PC video chat connects only one way?

This may be somewhat off topic for Mac users, but maybe someone in the community can still help me.
I have a strange problem using iChat AV 3 on a MacBook and AIM 5.9 on a PC for video chat. I can readily establish video chat when the PC contacts the Mac, but vice versa the video chat cannot be established. The PC gets the invitation to video chat, but as soon as it accepts the connection is terminated, and I keep getting a firewall error message. Instant messaging between the computers can be established both ways. I assume that one crucial port on the PC is blocked by the firewall. Scouting this and other forums I found lists of possible ports that need to be opened, and I tried all of them, but nothing works. Tried the DMZ for the PC, which didn't work either. Tried deactivating Windows Firewall, which didn't work. Any other ideas?
The PC set up is as follows:
Thinkpad T23 with Windows XP SP2; Windows Firewall on, AIM port allowed; Netgear Router MR814v2; UPnP activated, no port forwarding at this point; AIM 5.9
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Jan,
Thanks for the pointers, but network utility didn't
reveal any problems. I really assume the problem is
    on the PC side.
    Ralph,
I monitored the contact attempts using connection
doctor, and it didn't give me any error messages on
the mac side. To answer your other question, I did
activate UPnP in the Windows Firewall as well as in
the router, but that didn't help either. It turns out
that activating or deactivating UPnP on the router
doesn't make a difference. It always only connects
one way. I did however activate windows firewall
error logging, and it gave the following log
    (192.168.0.2 = PC IP; 192.168.0.3 = Mac IP):

Not being an expert in this maybe someone can give me
a hint based on this. The three final UDP drops in
the Mac to PC connect attempt make me suspicious, but
I'm not sure how to address this. I think I tried
forwarding this port to the PC without success.
Thanks again for the comments so far.

    Fritz,
Could you have a look together with Ralph if maybe the Adobe Bridge is malfunctioning. I have found a missing component wich is known and documented. This is the bug report and the way to fix it. I have found it in my own computer, after fixing it the iChat suddenly worked. I suggest you take the missing part (the update file you were asking about Ralph, it is lost in a file named update) and run Fritz' test again. If the code progressively gets better then we have pinned down the "random" factor of the malfunction. The documentation you find here: http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332537.html. It blocks the airport. A lot of peolple run Adobe foto shop, mine came from Elements. So, do expect progress... Have to bring my daughter to school now. See you later. Ralph, when we are right hit a flag in the code.
    Talk to you later.

  • 2 Macs, same network, cant 'see' 1 of them in iChat Bonjour list - Help?

Hi, I run 2 x macs on same network. 1 x iMac connected directly via ethernet to my router (Time Capsule) and 1 x MacBook Pro via airport. When using iChat via the Bonjour List I can't 'see' my iMac when using my MacBook Pro but when using my iMac I can 'see' the MacBook Pro in the Bonjour list? Any suggestions? Thanks. Ross

    Hi,
IS the Mac User Name on both computers the same ? (as shown in the Address Book)

  • Two Questions, 2 ipods one comp, and video organization.

Two questings That I have. One, my wife might be getting another IPOD and just wondering how it all works with hooking up two ipods to one computer. My friend tried hookin his up to mine and it just said something about erasing all he has and putting my library on his. So is it possible to have two different libraries, for two different ipods, on one comp? SECOND question. Is there anyway I can organize the Video area a little better. maybe make another folder or section, you know one for podcast, one for movie trailers, one for featurettes instead of having them all in one spot?

I think you have to go into itunes settings and select update only checked songs or manual update only. Sharing the same computer while managing different music lists between two or more ipods is do-able but a pain. I recommend keeping a seperate computer for each ipod whenever possible. And never delete the music on your computer as that's your first line of backing up defense.
This link might help your folders question but I haven't checked it out yet:

  • Safari cannot make a secure connection to Google or Youtube--but only on my home network

Recently, when I am on my home network, I cannot connect to Google or Youtube.  When I try to, I get an error message that says that Safari can't make a secure connection to the site.  (I can connect to these sites with Firefox at home though)  However, when I am at work, both Google and Youtube load just fine on Safari.  Any idea what could be causing this?  I suspect that it's the repeater that my landlord installed in my apartment, but I really have no idea.
    I am running Mavericks (10.9.4) on a 15-inch, late 2011 MacBook Pro.

    Hello Punxsutawney Phyllis,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
See the article below to troubleshoot this error message you are receiving.

  • One APC UPS power supply to two Mac Mini via one USB control cable

Is it possible to use one APC UPS to control two Mac Mini to shut down when on UPS? The APC unit only has one USB control cable.

I wouldn't buy a PSU today for a high-performance system for any reason unless all of the voltage rails were separately supplied.  AFAIK, only the Antec TruePower series and the PC Power & Cooling psu's can make that claim. Everyone else splits between the 5v and 3v rails, it seems to me--ie, with shared voltage rails the problem can be that when either the 3v or 5v rail demands more power then power is leeched from the shared rail to compensate.  If devices on the shared rail need the power, though, then the voltage dip can cause problems with the devices on that rail and system instability (BSOD, etc.) can result.  When all of your rails are powered seperately, though, all you have to consider is buying the psu that supplies the maximum you anticipate needing for each rail (with some headroom of course)  and you eliminate the shared-rail power dip (a fairly common, often misdiagnosed problem) as a potential problem in your system.
No question PCP&C makes the best psu's money can buy, but I opted for the Antec True-Power 550 True Control instead simply because I can buy two TP550's for the price of one equivalent PCP&C cpu, and the TP 550 offers a few bells and whistles not offered by PCP&C (such as the intake fan which helps cool the TP 550's innards and improves its efficiency.)  All psu's lose efficiency the higher their internal temps go, but of them all the PCP&C psus are the least affected by efficiency loss generated by rising operating temperatures--which is probably why they don't need a separate intake cooling fan like the TP 550.  But the TP 550 has the intake fan nonetheless and is 1/2 the price of the PCP&C psu, and if memory serves the Antec fans are a good deal more quiet than the single fan used by PCP&C.  So it's just a matter of studying the specs and the prices and choosing the one you want.  But I'd constrain myself to these two brands because neither shares voltage rails internally.
