Two macs sharing an iTunes lib stored on a NAS?

I know there are many discussions/articles pointing to how I can move my iTunes library to an external drive, but my questions re- moving the library are:
1. Can two macs share that library (as long as there are no concurrent users)?
2. Can multiple users on the two macs share it (again, as long as they are not concurrently trying to access it)?
3. Does the external drive have to be Mac OS X formatted?
4. Can the "external" drive be a NAS?
FYI, I am using iTunes 8.0.2.

Yes you can!
The way i did it was open a new iTunes account on in a folder on you NAS drive and open your itunes from there.
If you change the location of your iTunes files by preference, advance then change - your Library data base file is still on your mac, thus you cant open from anywhere on your network.
But if you create a new iTunes account on your NAS its all located on there and all you have to do is locate your iTunes library file from any computer with an iTunes program to open and use your complete iTunes account and what's stored on it. but remember for other people to open the account you have to log off yourself.
The good thing is i can open it from my iMac on my profile so when i sync my iPhone i get my ical, address book email etc and when my wife opens it from her MBP and from her profile she gets all her ical, address book mail etc and we get to shall all the music, movies and applications.
the only downside i can see is its a bit slow over NAS especially over WiFi but thats what you get for all your eggs in one basket.
any amount of people can use your account this way and as for formating you will find the software that comes with your NAS will format it in its own way usually FAT that way any computer can connect.
any problems give me a shout.

  • Replacing an old Mac Mini and getting the new Mac to reference the existing iTunes account stored on a NAS drive.

I'm getting rid of an old Mac Mini which has it's iTunes library stored on a NAS drive. I want the replacement Mac to reference and use this existing NAS stored iTunes library rather than loading the entire contents onto the new Mac. What do I need to do?

Open iTunes with the option key pressed. You should see a window asking you to choose a library, create a library and cancel. Select choose a library and navigate to the NAS drive.

  • Multiple users on one mac sharing one itunes library

Hi, I read through this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3753008 and was able to have two users share one itunes library on one computer (yay).  However, for the new user, she can't add any music files to her itunes even though I already made sure that she had read/write permissions for the shared folder.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!  (I recently upgraded to mountain lion on a 2009 macbook, if that matters at all.  Thanks.)

  • Can I use two Macs with one iTunes library?

I currently have an iMac with my iTunes library stored on an external drive, and a shiny new MacBook Pro waiting for me at the Apple Store. If I transfer my entire library from the external drive to a new MacBook, can I still access my library seemlessly on my old iMac [possibly using Home Sharing]? I would like to use both computers to access the same content, in an office and then mobile setting.
Also, if I continue to make purchases on my old iMac from Amazon or eMusic, is there a way to automatically store/transfer those on the new MacBook, the same way they are automatically stored on the external drive now?
I do have the capability and plan on connecting my external drive to my AirPort Extreme after the transfer, if that makes any difference.

See I wouldn't want to necessarily make a copy, but rather copy the library itself; so it is no longer stored on the external drive, and it's new home would be the MacBook Pro. I was wondering if I could access the MacBook library from my iMac the same way I access the external drive on my iMac. Or if I'm overthinking the Home Sharing service and really have nothing to worry about.
I do have my entire library in the iCloud, and am a Match subscriber, but it is important that I have the songs actually stored on my MacBook so I can access them when I am without an internet connection.

  • Sharing an ITunes lib between a Mac and an Apple TV

I understand Apple TV streams music from an existing iTunes libraray on another Mac.
Will it still work if that same iTunes library is in use by the Mac hosting the library? Will things slow down considerable if both devices are using the same lib at the same time?
Thanks in advance for your advice. /Kenny

    no.
you can stream content from computers to TV. with the release of iOS 4.2, you will also be able to stream content from an iPad or iPhone/iPod Touch to it.

you can stream content from only one computer @ a time. however, owing to the +home sharing+ functionality, you would be able to access the content of other shared libraries while connected to one library.

  • I want to install new Apple TV which can receive iTunes media stored in a NAS device connected to my router.  I would like to use both a PC and a Mac to manage this.  Is that possible?

I guess the real question is can a single drive in the NAS be shared by both a PC and a Mac.  I plan to access the network from both the PC and mac wrelessly but will ust CAT5 between Apple TV and router.

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • Can i have two devices sharing one itunes account

i currently have my iphone synced with my itunes account, i have just bought a ipod and want it to share the same itunes account, library etc, how do i do this without wiping it off my phone when ading the new ipod ??

This won't be a problem, iTunes will see the new device as a separate device, it will have its own settings under iTunes, you can set it up to sync the same content or different content to the first device, it will have no effect on how the first device syncs with iTunes.

  • Two iphones sharing same itunes account... Help with contacts merging!!

    Hello all,
Well my hubby and I are loving our iPhones but I have a few questions.
I already had an iTunes account for my iPod way before we had our iPhones. Because of this we both share the same account.
Well where my concerns are is our contacts. I have sync our phones using the icloud and our contacts have merged. I have even tried to use 2 seperate itunes log ins but this doesn'e seem to work.
One phone is iphone 4 other 4s
    Can someone please help????

you can keep the same apple id for purchases like apps and music, but you need to create separate icloud accounts for contacts and so on. after you do this you may need to redo your contacts on each phone.

  • Sharing my iTunes Lib with an Ext Hard Drive???

I have 2 computers, a G5 and a Powerbook G4, and all my music is on my External (which is linked to my G5). I want to have my G5 and its music synced with my Powerbook G4.....is this possible???
I want to do this cuz my Powerbook G4 has Tiger, which is what i use to sync my iPod, since the G5 only has 10.3.
So please can someone help me out, i dont wanna have to buy Leopard.

Open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences, turn off the option to automatically copy music to the iTunes folder, and drag the music folder on the external drive into iTunes. Another option is to create a new iTunes library on the external drive and use it with both computers.

  • Itunes LIbrary stored on a NAS

I have a "myworldbook" NAS with my i-tunes library on it.
Sometimes it disconects itself form the network... and I-tunes defaults the library back to a local folder (without even asking - a bit rude I think).
Usually I just re-set the NAS and change the library in i-tunes back at the NAS. I spent last month updating all the album covers... Nice work.
But when the NAS went off line, it defaulted back to local drive... and then "lost" all my album covers except the ones that I-tunes downloads automatically.
Now I have a number of files on a local drive and a number of files on the NAS with album covers who knows where... it's a mess.
    Consolidate? ok.
But there's a complication... another computer shares the NAS and when it adds files to the library... i.e. when I consolidate, those files are not added to the other computer's copy of i-tunes, even though they exist in the NAS library.
How do I work around sharing the Library on a NAS trouble free?

  • Sharing iTunes library between two Macs on Time Capsule

    Hi there
I've just about persuaded my fiancee to get a MacBook, which would give us a mac-only household. If I got a Time Capsule, could we share an iTunes library? We each have an iPod and it would seem like a pain to have to recreate two entire libraries on the Time Capsule, much of which would be the same music.
I'm also assuming we could both use the TC as wireless Time Machine backup for our Macs - is this correct?
Finally, does anyone have a view on the likely range of TC relative to a standard Linksys 802.11g wireless router? The Linksys doesn't quite reach to the other end of my apartment and I'm wondering if the TC is likely to be better.
    Very many thanks in advance.

    Hello
You will run into pain. I just tried every found solution on Internet. Whatever you will do, it ends up in a hack. Fact is: iTunes administer your library only local. You CAN share your iTunes library on one Mac by menu settings in a network, BUT the Mac sharing its iTunes library MUST run all the time you want to listen to music from shared iTunes library even if the shared library (music files) is on the Time Capsule. It even wont work turn on "Wake up on LAN activity". The shared library will only be available as long as the Mac sharing its iTunes library is up and iTunes opened. That way it makes no big sense to have the music files in library physically on your Time Capsule. Another problem might come up when you stop listening shared iTunes library: As soon as the sharing Mac goes into StandBy mode (time depending) you can't access its library again. Standby must be stopped.
The other "solution" is also to have the whole library on a shared drive (Time Capsule) and to import it on both Macs. You will run quickly into Sync problems, beside its a pain to administer the song library that way: You have to import further songs twice, on both Macs to hear them on every one.
And of course, there are third pary hacks around nobody really wants to use.
After implementing Time Machine into Lepoard Apple wanted to make money out of it and offered Time Capsule mainly for storing data and backups (what both works great, also WLAN works fine).
I hope Apple will find a way in iTunes not to handle the music libraries so restrictive, so it can be accessed f.e. on Time Capsule while the Mac sharing its library must not run all the time.
    Hope I could help.

  • Hosting itunes lib on Vista box, sharing between 2 Mac laptops?

    Afternoon
My partner and I both have Mac laptops as our primary computers - an MB and a PB. We'd like to share the same itunes library without having to leave one of the laptops on all the time, because one or either of them is regularly out of the house. I'm thinking that we should be able to use the old Vista box in the study to host the shared library and we could just connect to it using SMB in a login script. I've tried it out and I can certainly read itunes files stored on the Vista box from my PB, so I think this might be the easiest solution, but what are the "gotchas" I'd have to watch out for here?
Second question - we also have a 750GB Maxtor USB/firewire brick which I currently use as both my TM and iTunes storage (in two partitions). Is there an easy way to repartition this without losing all my TM backups? I'd like to just repartition it into 2 (it's in 4 at the moment) - one for my PB TM and one for my Vista Norton backup.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
    Kind regards
    A

  • Sharing iTunes across two macs?

    Hi Folks,
I have two macs in the house. One a mini linked to a tv and an iMac. The iMac holds my primary iTunes Library. What I would like to do is share the same library with the mini mac, without having to use the sharing option. Before 10.5 I had the library on an external drive that both applications could see and use, since upgrading to 10.5, it will still see them but front row will not??? Also if I do use the share option none of the album art can be seen? Anybody have any ideas? Thanks, Andrew.

If you want all users to access the same music, ratings, playlist, etc, do this.
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Drag your entire iTunes folder from /Username/Music to /Users/Shared.
    3 Log out.
1 Log in on your other account(s).
2 Start iTunes and immediately press an hold the Option key.
3 iTunes will ask to *Create new library* or *Choose existing library*. Select *Choose existing library*.
4 Select the *iTunes library file* in the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared.
5 Now go to File -> *Add to library* and select the iTunes folder located in /Username/Music.
6 - iTunes will add all the music in from this account to the main iTunes music folder/library.
7 Delete the iTunes folder in Username/Music
8 Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Option). Everything should be there.
9 Quit iTunes and log out of the account.
10 Do the above steps for all users. Don't do the first 1-3 steps. Start at the second series.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should be there.
Whenever any of you do anything in iTunes, it will be seen by all since you are using one and the same iTunes library file.
Create a "main" playlist for each user with their own music. Create a smart playlist and set it to *Playlist is not the playlist* you created above. Select this and it will show you everything NOT in your playlist. Do the same for the others. This will help when adding only the music you want your own playlist.
Note that iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time. If you have Fast user switching enabled, the other users must quit iTunes in order for anyone else to use it.
