Two odd things

Hey guys, I've noticed two odd things with my iPod Touch:
1. If you have two or more tracks by different artists but with the same track and album name, the iPod will only show the album of the first (alphabetically) artist when browsing by album name.
For example, take Seal's "Amazing" from the album "Amazing" and George Michael's "Amazing" from the album "Amazing". If you copy those two tracks to your iPod, you will only see...

George Michael
...in the album list.
2. I have a contact in Outlook 2007 that has his birthday on August 14th, 1973. Outlook displays the correct date in the calender and when opening the contact. However, when syncing with my iPod, the iPod displays that the contact has his birthday on August 13th, 1973 and when opening the calender the birthday spans across two days (from August 14th, 23:00 to August 15th, 23:00). What could be the reason for this? I also tried deleting the contact in Outlook and creating it from scratch with the same effect. I also told iTunes to replace all contacts and calender entries from the iPod with the ones stored on my PC without success. My SE phone syncs correctly so I doubt it's a problem with Outlook.

One more thing... If I correct the contact and calender entry on my iPod and then sync with the PC, Outlook 2007 will display two bithday events: its old one that was correct and a new one that spans across two days like it used to be on the iPod. Also, the birthday when opening the contact in Outlook 2007 is no longer correct.
So basically, the information is either correct in Outlook but not on the iPod or vice versa.

Two odd things on my MacBook Pro

Hi All,
I'm using a MacBook Pro 15", OS 10.4.10, no bells and whistles installed to 'hash' the system except Macaroni and FruitMenu (both of which are the latest versions).
However any files saved to the desktop are invisible till next reboot. I know they're there - I can see them by using CaptainFTP and browsing to the desktop. I can even force them back to visibility by dragging the icons out of CaptainFTP over the desktop - but not dropping them. Just 'showing' the desktop the icons of the 'invisible' files makes them reappear.
The files aren't set as invisible - checked that with CaptainFTP's get info. I've rebuilt permissions, no joy. Any suggestions please?
Second this is the trash sometimes refuses to empty. No message, if I select 'empty trash' or hit cmd-backspace all seems normal, but the items in the trash are still there. After a reboot they'll delete fine.
Odd stuff, never happened on my old G5.
Again, suggestions or ideas please!

Yep the finder is running.
There are other icons on my desktop - the obvious HD ones, alias links to HD areas, etc..
If I drag a file to the desktop, drag an alias, save a file there - anything - the file is invisible until next reboot. But like I said, I know the file is there - I can see it using CaptainFTP which can show invisible files.

My gf is borrowing an iPhone and theres a few odd things setup on it regarding wireless syncing and something under SMS with a receiving email address. I was wondering if msgs she is sending or even receiving would be going to this address.

Another odd thing I just this second found is it looks like the phone is setup to wirelessly sync to a designated laptop as soon as it is discovered in the network. Any help or suggestion on how to stop this?

Install ClamXav and run a scan with that. It should pick up any trojans.

Library re-imported from troubled backup doing odd things

So i had a bit of a crisis over the past few days, osx partition corrupted, my backup drive was screwed up, so i did some juggling and managed to back up as much as i could...
anyway, so now im on a fresh installation of osx and installed iphoto...i was able to save the iphotodata folder and all of my original photo folders that iphoto read from, but the iphoto library was corrupted and uncopyable...
i have about 10,000some photos that i have carefully organized into about 20 different albums, and losing the organization would be a huge pain...
i option+started iphoto and picked the iphotodata folder, and it has all my albums and everything there, but the odd thing is when i scroll, all the photo thumbnails are there, but when i stop scrolling they all vanish and become the dotted empty squares.
i always told iphoto not to duplicate the photos into its library to save space and go off the original folders, but all the folders are in the identical relative places to the iphotodata folder...why isnt it able to find them?
i've also tried cmd+option rebuilding the libraries, but it didnt do anything
it'll be a huge pain if i have to manually reorganize everything, does anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like the database is damaged and can't be repaired. Not sure what you mean by the iPhotodata folder but if you mean the folder named Data that's inside the library then all that contains are the thumbnail files for the library. They are not needed as the thumbnails are recreated when you import the photos.
You'll have to start over with a new library. If you create a new library and import just the Originals folder from your problem library you will get all of your photos in the same Events that they were in in the old library.

Recently my ipad started doing an odd thing. When I go to Google the keyboard pops up, but then pops down again, when I touch the google bar the second time it comes up and stays up. Why would it do that, anything to do about it?

Did you try rebooting the iPad? It can cure a lot of really simple little hinky issues.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Two New Things

Found two new things with the Kin TWOm today. Maybe of value to some.
First, I was having trouble with my Hotmail outbox on the phone...kept giving error messages and wouldn't complete the send. Finally had to delete the account on the phone. Now when adding the account back, depending on which Email account you want to see first, you may need to delete all of your Email accounts and rebuild them because they are sequential when swiping the email account pages with your finger. Once I rebuilt the accounts, I was able to recompose the messages and resend successfully. I cannot explain why the outbox was stuck.
Second, I found a means of capturing the screen as a photo. Doesn't always work, but if you hold the home key and the camera button at the same time, you can sometimes get an image of whatever is on the screen.

Not quite sure why the outbox wasn't working, but it is nice to know that deleting and re-entering the emails fixed it (typical Microsoft?).
As far as screenshots go, i've always been able to capture a screenshot, with the exception of taking a screen of a video that is playing (it just appears black with the text title showing around it). It may just be that the buttons weren't completely (half of the camera button, not all the way; similar to how you focus the camera without taking a picture) pressed down when they didn't work on your device. It doesn't preview the screenshots, so you don't really know if it took them until after you look at the photos, but it should always take them.

I had a cheap iPhone 5 charger in my phone, I tried to pull it out gently and it make two metal things come out of my charger port, is this fixable

My computer is starting to do odd things

My poor old computer is starting to act up. It's a variety of things. I'll list a few, but first my question. Are there some general things I can do to give my computer a good spring cleaning. I fill it up often and archive to external drive. I am a designer and have thousands of files from many years all over the place, but organized. It feels like I just need to clean out the cobwebs and simplify to get back in control.
First of all, stuff just seems slow. Searches are slow, searches are slow, files load slow, like big photoshop files. Sometimes I think it is just sitting there doing nothing (beachballsville as we call it in the office) and suddenly it snaps to and performs the requested task. Even if I clear up 15 gigs on the drive, it doesn't change things. So I don't think it's a pure space issue.
Finder searches will work after a restart, but by the second search, it brings back no results and just keep searching even when it should be hitting a million documents. So luckily I know when everything is organized. Especially when I try to do something like a "created on" date specific search. No dice on results.
Occasionally, browsing my disk in columns mode will freak out on me and the smallest of files will take two minutes to bring up the preview thumbnail. A restart puts things to right. But it's a pain when looking through files of images for a specific image. It's fairly rare for it to have this problem, but it consistently pops up every week or two.
Once in a while, Photoshop tools windows will one place on the screen, but when I click them, I see a ghosted box the same size as the toolbox elsewhere on the screen as though my cursor thinks its elsewhere on the screen. Again, a restart fixes it. It just seems like it had a brain ****.
Programs like Photoshop and In design can take many minute to quit unless I force quit them. They will say they're not responding, but eventually they will. So if I wait for everything to close properly, it can take 10 minutes to restart my computer for all the time it takes to close the programs. That doesn't seem right.
And when I'm doing a finder search, it starts searching before I finish typing, which would be find if it let me finish typing, but it does not. It will freeze up while searching and not allow me to finish the word until it comes back with results, so don't misspell a word and type fast, or I'll get lost in beachballsville while it's spining away looking for nothing of relevance. Can I make it wait till I'm done writing the search term and click "search". It would save so much agony.
Today my active screen corners stopped responding. Guess what fixed it.
Yeah, I probably need a new machine, but it really does work pretty well most of the time. It's just that when I come across these issue at really inopportune times, it's is no frustrating.
I'm hoping someone has advice, or has corrected some of these issues in the past. I looked around the board and didn't see something that made me say, YES! that's what's happening to me too!. But I've been wrong before. Thanks for reading my tome.

Odd things when trying to render

I needed to add a fade to white at the end of three separate clips for a colleague who didn't have FCP HD. Two of the clips were Mpeg4 .mov files, and i set the sequence to exactly what the clip was so i wouldn't need to render.
I then added a fade to white at the end, and rendered it out, and exported the new Mpeg4 .mov file.
The last clip was a .mov file, though the compression was done with H.264.
I made the sequence exactly like the clip, added the fade to white at the end just like with the others, though it wouldn't render the fade to white section.
If I changed the compression from H.264 to Mpeg4, the entire imported clip would need to be rendered, though was able to render the fade to white at the end.
Is this an issue with not being able to render with H.264 as the compressor for Quicktime in the sequence settings?

1.) I used the the compressed files at the same resolution because it was all fine and so i wouldn't have to peice it all together. Plus it was under timeline, he needed it for presentation, and also, the original source footage is timelapse of thousands of still images that i didn't create.
If I set up the sequence exactly the same as the file, I shouldn't have to render. I just added a white matte at the end of the clip of 1 sec. or so, and just rendered that out.
2.)You know how in under sequence settings under compressor, you have many options, (DVCPro1080i, or mpeg4, or h.264, ect. . .) well, if you don't choose the same compressor as your footage, you will have to render it.
When I chose mpeg4, which was the compressor used for two of the peices, i chose that in my sequence settings.
When I chose the H.264 in sequence settings for the H.264 material, and dropped footage into the sequence, I again didn't have to render. It was only until i tried to create the matte white with a fade in that wasn't able to render out. When I chose mpeg4 under the compressor in my sequence settings I was able to render the whoe thing out, though this made me render the entire sequence do to the fact that my sequence settings now differed from the origal H.264 clip.
Wow this is a long explanation, and all in all it work without any hickups, was not too long of a clip and not too long of a render. . .
I am just curious why it wouldn't allow me to render the matte white with the fade made with the pen tool?

Two Tiny Things to do With Selecting Objects.

First: when I used the direct selection tool I always end up on the first drag, <wince>dragging the whole object.</wince> Is it default behaviour to have to click and click again to get to the anchor?
Next: If I do something to an object and then click the arrow tool, the swatch thingies at the top don't appear until I click the object again. I can't think of an example at the moment and I don't have Illustrator open to try. But this happens a lot, I'm sure it does.

Where and what do you click? If you mousedown within the pick distance of an anchorPoint and drag, you will drag the anchorPoint. If you mousedown on a path's fill and drag, you will select and drag the whole path. If you mousedown on a straight segment that has no extended handles and drag, you will drag the two anchorpoints associated with that segment (and therefore drag the "segment"). If you mousedown on a curved segment and drag, you will bend the curve.
The above assumes the path is initially unselected.

Since its first being added several versions ago, the Control Panel (across the top of the document window) has been chronically plagued with a failure to update. It often fails to reflect changes to the ruler units and multiple other things. I don't trust it. I continue to refer to individual palettes on my second monitor.

Two little things driving me crazy...

It's the little things that get you...
I just hooked up an Airport Extreme for my laptop, replacing an older Airport which had issues. It's hooked to a DSL modem.
Mostly this is for the better, but two things are worse:
1) It doesn't automatically reconnect to my network when I reopen the lid any more. I have to choose my network each time.
2) For some reason, now I have a counter or timer in the menu bar, showing how long I've been connected to the Internet. Something I do NOT need to know every second as I work.
Of course, the way to solve 2 would be to remove the Airport signal strength doohickey from the menu bar, and with it the timer, except that I need it there since I have to reconnect every time I open the lid!
Anyone know how to 1) make it automatically reconnect every time it's opened, like it used to and 2) make the dang counter go away? Thanks in advance.

1) Open System Preferences>Network>Airport and at "By default, join:" select "Preferred Networks" instead of "Automatic" - then select the name of your network and then click on "Apply Now" button at bottom of panel.
2) Open the Airport icon at the top of your screen, select the name of your network and de-select "Show Time Connected"
