Two open & working catalogs in Lightroom 5.5
Is this a new feature or a bug? I was reviewing my students catalogs and when opening a new catalog the other one does not close. Now mostly there was some message first that went away afterwards, and in two occasions the "background" catalog gave an error, but a couple of times I could just switch between the two catalogs and they were both functioning. I must say it is convenient when reviewing
I was opening the catalogs from a rather slow external USB 2,0 drive. I've included screenshots.
For reviewing I use AnyFilter PlugIn by John R Ellis, so not sure if that could cause it?

Interesting. I tried (not very hard, granted) to duplicate this feat and didn't make it happen on Win 7, 64-bit.
Having two copies of LR running on two separate catalogues probably wouldn't mess you up. Running twice at the same time against one catalogue would be a recipe for disaster, and LR is pretty good at not allowing that to happen..
The Hacker Dictionary would probably call what you saw a mis-wart: something that ought to be a bug but turned out to be a feature.

Cannot open my catalog in lightroom (2,7)

With LR closed, check to see if there is a file ending in .lock next
to the catalog. Like this
http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/76881/
Capture.JPG
If there is then delete it and then open LR again.
The lock file should be deleted every time LR is closed, but if your
computer has crashed or you have shut it down without closing LR
sometimes it doesn't. LR can have only one catalog opened at a time
and the presence of the .lock file indicates to LR that a catalog is
open.

Lightroom cannot open the catalog named “lightroom 4 good” located on volume “LIGHTROOM” because Lightroom cannot save changes to this location. This is what I am receiving even from my back-up
Serial Number removed by: PECourtejoieYou need to have writing permission where a LR catalog is stored.
Even for just opening a catalog, since this database does not have a save-to-catalog command.
Maybe it makes sense that you do not have them for a backup storage location in order to prevent accidental overwriting?
If you agree, first copy the lrcat-file to your usual working folder where you have writing permission, maybe renaming it if that would overwrite you real working catalog.
If you do not agree, remedy the writing permission for your user account at the backup spot.

Lightroom shuts down when I open my catalog
I've upgraded from Windows Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit and reinstalled everything. After starting Lightroom 2.6 I go to File -> Open catalog and select my catalog. Lightroom says it needs to relaunch, I click OK, and Lightroom shuts down as it does when relaunching, except it doesn't start up again. No error message. When I start it manually, I get the default empty catalog instead of the one I want to open. If I set my catalog to the default catalog in the preferences, Lightroom won't start at all. Nothing happens when I click the shortcut on the start menu, until I delete the preferences file. Still, it won't open my catalog after deleting the preferences. I also have lots of backups of the catalog, and none of them work either. Anyone had this problem and know how to fix it? Will I have to downgrade to Vista?
Check your user account permissions for the Lightroom catalog and make sure you have full permissions for it. You may need to change the permissions for the drives and folders where the images are stored too.

How can two users work on iMovie? My husband is working on a memorial video for a family member who passed, I plan to edit but he had to take his computer to work. I have the iMovie project on a zip drive. How do I get it to open in my imovie?
You will need an external drive that is formatted as MAC OS EXTENDED (journaled).
Move the Project, Events, and any photos and music to the external drive by following the instructions in this post.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
Be sure to use CONSOLIDATE MEDIA to get the photos and music. Then plug this drive into your computer and you will be able to edit. -
why do i get the following message when i attempt to open my backup file for lightroom cc? "Lightroom cannot use the catalog named "Lightroom Catalog" because it is not writable and cannot be opened". This message just started coming up after downloading lightroom cc (previously using lightroom 5)...am i backing up properly or not???
Open Pictures folder and move the files named lrcat-journal and lrcat.lock to Desktop.
Make sure that , they are not inside Pictures folder any more and try to open backup from Lighrtroom and check..
Any LRcat file with .lock extension , move it to Desktop. -
please help I need to open my my lightroom to edit and it says lightroom catalog cannot be opened bc another application already has it opened.... I went to download the update but computer went dead when came back on it was gone so I reinstalled. now wont open but ps will help birth session to edit
Make sure you don't have another copy of Lightroom actively running on your computer. If not, find your catalog file in Finder/Explorer. Look for a file with the same name, but with a .lock extension. delete that file. Now Lightroom should open the catalog again.

Working and moving photos between two open libraries?
I'm not sure if it is possible, but can you work in and transfer photos between two open libraries at the same time? It is more an organizational question...i.e. I want to have some photos only appear in a particular library...
nk3:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can only have one library open at a time but with iPhoto Library Manager (in the free mode) you can transfer 20 photos at a time between libraries and keep keywords, comments, etc. -
Lightroom crashed and now I can't open the catalog - even after deleting the lock file.
Lightrooms crashed, which is a common occurrance. But, this last time was different. After I restarted it my catalog was not linked and all my settings were gone. I tried opening the catalog through the file menu, but absolutely nothing happens. I tried going to the folder and clicking on it but this only opens lightroom with no catalog. After having scanned this forum I found that I need to delete the .lock file, but after doing that the same things happen. Any suggestions on how to open my catalog? Will reinstalling Lightroom help?
The problems mostly happen when I am using X-Y compare in Library mode. It shows black rectancles over the tops of the sections that contain the photos and these flash. They aren't always the same size, but are only on the top of the section - never big enough to completely cover the photos. Then I get anywhere from one to about four or five extra windows stacked on top of the Lightroom Icon at the bottom of my screen (I use Windows 8) opening and closing, though there isn't enough time for me to click on them and read them because my computer gets so slow that my mouse actin is delayed by a few seconds. And, to shut Lightroom down, I need to use Windows task manager because clicking on the little red box with the X in the upper right corner accomplishes nothing. I have a new Sony Vaio i5 chip and 8Gb RAM. This also hapened on my old computer, though not as often

Opening a Lightroom 3 Catalog in Lightroom 5
I'm trying to open a Lightroom 3 catalog in Lightroom 5. I'm getting an error that says the catalog is not writable and cannot be opened. Can Lightroom 5 open a Lightroom 3 catalog?
Lr 5 can create a copy to upgrade from or upgrade directly an Lr 3 catalog. What I think you are seeing is the result of some permissions issue with the Lr3 catalog file or the folder containing it.

Can't open Lightroom 2.6 catalog in Lightroom 3
Lightroom 3 gives the following message when I try to open my Lightroom 2.6 catalog.
'Lightroom has encountered problems when trying to update the format of the catalog file and cannot use this catalog in this version of Lightroom'
The integrity of my 2.6 catalog checks out fine in Lightroom 2.6
Any suggestions? If i export the whole catalog, around 30,000 images, but do not check the export negative files and include available previews boxes does it export all the develop information and virtual copies etc?
So it will re read the raw files in thier exeisting locations and just rebuild previews as i need them? -
i am getting "unexpected error opening catalog" message when opening a catalog that worked fine 2 days ago. Other catalogs open on the same drive Mac pro LR5.3 please help.... Lots of worked had gone into that catalog
thanks
karlHmm, that is more of a problem!
Ok, couple of initial things to try:
1. Move the catalog to another drive, and try opening it from there. It's a long shot...
2. Create a new catalog and go to File menu > Import from Another Catalog. Navigate to the problem catalog and try to import a small chunk at a time. -
Work-around to import Elements 7 catalog into Lightroom 2
I know I can't import an Elements 7 catalog into Lightroom 2 because they were released at nearly the same time. But I want to do it anyway. What is the best workaround?
You can write the PSE metadata (captions, tags, GPS locations) to the files with psedbtool. When you import the photos into Lightroom, this data will be read into the Lightroom catalog.
You will lose PSE Notes, version sets, stacks, albums, creations and a few other things. -
I finally managed to get through the process of moving files and catalog from Lightroom 2.7 on a PC to Lightroom 4 on my Mac. I think I did it all correctly and all my file and previews and some tagging seems to be there. Two things are lost
1 - Most importantly, the development history on my files. I can see the edited versions in the previews, but as soon as I click on it, I can see that I lose all the changes I had made before. When I look at Development history, it just says "Imported on...." I'd love to get this back. That is a ton of processing work just lost because I switched computers.
2 - The collection names seem to have come over, but they are all empty. This is also a lot of work lost, though not as important as #1

Add artwork to songs and other items
Music and video you buy from the iTunes Store comes with its own artwork. You can add your own artwork to songs and other items in your library.
You can add many popular types of still image files, including JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and Photoshop. You must convert WAV files to another format before you can add artwork to them.
Album artwork for the currently playing item appears to the left of the progress bar. To view album artwork at a larger size in a separate window, click the artwork.
