Two operating systems in one computer - Running a program

Hi.
I have just installed two operating systems in my Thinkpad: windows 8 and windows 7. Is that possible to run a program, say Photoshop, MS Office, installed in windows 8 OS while I am running windows 7? I do not want to reinstall all the programs in windows 8 when using windows 7 because they are still in the same computer.
I tried to clicked on a program (from W8 Program x86). It asks for serial keys. I entered but it said that i do not have sufficient priviledge???
One more question:
I have an external hard drive. Is that possible when I install a program on that external hard drive, instead of internal hard drive, and run from that external hard drive? I mean: I install a program on external hard drive, then run that program in external HD from other computer?
I hope to have your insight solutions for this problem.
Thank you

Basically all more advanced programs cannot be run this way. They utilize registry entries, app data, environment variables etc. hence are tied to the OS they are installed on.
Some simple applications, which don't require to be installed or have a portable version will work. This list does not include Office or Photoshop.
The answer for the external hard drive is the same. You'll need a "portable" application, which doesn't store any OS or user specific information.
You can look here http://portableapps.com/ for applications that are not tied to an OS.

  • Two Operating Systems on One Mac

The Avid software is really finicky (more so than fcp) about what OS you're running with it. We have the opportunity to get the avid media composer software version for real cheap (relatively), but I hesitate because it will mean that I can't upgrade my OS when I want to, without running the risk of breaking Avid or having to shell out more cash to get Avid running again.
So, is it possible to have 2 different operating systems on one mac? So, for the Avid system, I'll just have the perfect OS for that version of Avid (currently OS 10.4.9), and basically nothing else except necessary software for editing. And for the 2nd system, I'd have FCP and whatever OS works best for that? Would I need 2 physical internal hard drives for that work, and then just set my startup disk as needed, depending on which editing software I want to use?

Here's the link to Apple's free Boot Camp, if you want to download and try that out:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
You'll then need a copy of MS Windows to install.
    Hope that helps

  • Can I copy my Lion operating system from one computer to another in the household

Can I copy my Lion operating system from my Mac Air to another household computer?

It should also be noted that you can upgrade all Apple computers in your home free IF you paid for one license.
It should also be noted that you are NOT supposed to sell a computer that contains an UPGRADED copy of Lion.

  • Can I run two versions of the Mac operating system on one computer?

Can I designate one hard drive to run OS 10.6.8 and another to run Mountain LIon and switch between the two?
I use software that would not run on Mountain Lion and would break the bank to both upgrade and  buy a new Mac.

The EFI/firmware generally prevents you from running older OSX than what was shipped with the system.
My system can do what you propose because it came with SL, and can also run ML.
A new system that was designed to run Lion or ML will need to play very special and marginal tricks to run SL.
Some systems un der the Apple refurbished list are olde enough to run SL but new enough to run ML, and come with 1-year Apple warranties.

  • Running two operating systems so I can run Final Cut Pro

My version of Final Cut Pro 4 will not run on Leopard. I would like to load the original OS and maybe its upgrades as a second OS for my Power Mac. (At some point in the past the OS was upgraded to Leopard, which I want to keep.)
Can I do this and can I do it with only the Install and Restore Disk that came with the original machine? The disk seems to be in perfect condition but is not read when I load it in the drive. All other CD/DVDs run fine.
I am also open to doing this in a better way. I just don't want to sacrifice a $1000 program because it won't run on Leopard.

10.2.7 was only a temporary fix, a band-aide, an emergency OS shipped only on a few early Sept '03 G5s and totally beta and nothing anyone should use or want on their system.
Yes you can use the 2nd hard drive, I just thought you could shrink Leo partition and have one drive with both, and leave all your files etc on a data drive.
As I said, again, 10.4.10 is the lowest OS I would touch.
The 1.8SP was a "goof" almost. No one wanted anything less than dual, yields of the 2.0GHz were not great, eventually they had to start shipping dual 1.8s, and an SP was a big step backward after years of duals and pushing dual cpu support.
The 2.0DP PCI-X 8 DIMM slots was popular even if people had to wait for one, and they sold for $2995 back then. Not sure but 1.8SP is in the $350 market range.
I was recommending too to format, partition. Of course you can always clone what you have (backup with CCC or SuperDuper) to drive B.
I always thought Final Cut you would really want to work off multiple drives.
If you don't have 10.4 DVD they can be hard to find anymore.

  • Having Two Operating Systems on the same computer.

Is it possible to have two operating system on one computer?
I would like to have both Mac OSX 10.411 and Mac OSX 10.5 on my Power Mac G4.
I would like to be able to access each system independently. So that I may use my
editing software which is 10.411 compatible but not compatible with 10.5. Is this possible?
    Thanks!

Yes if you Partition The Hard Drive.

  • Two operating systems with mountain lion

Is it possible to install two operating systems on a mac running OS X Mountain Lion?
I would like to setup Snow Leopard and keep Mountain Lion on seperate partitions.
    Can this work?

As long as your Mac shipped with SL or less you can do it. You'll need to put SL on another drive or partition your existing hard drive. I prefer a seperate drive. Then when you need SL just boot from your SL drive.

I have a very old G4 that I use for ProTools. I just bought a slightly newer G4 and I want to find out if it is possible to transfer my old OS 10.2.8 system from one computer to the other so I can run my old ProTools system without a hitch. I would rather not buy the old 10.2.8 system as it is expensive. Thanks!

Need to know which newer one, some cannot run 10.2.x.
One solution might be to clone the 10.2.8 Drive to another drive, then Install a later OS on it Preserving Users & Settings.
Best way to get an exact bootable copy of your old drive to the new one is with Carbon Copy Cloner...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Can I use two operative systems running in  my iMac G5?

A few weeks ago I bought a digital videocamera, Canon MV830i, it's an easy and a cheap cam.
Well, now I've filmed some stuffs and I want it over to my iMac. I put in the DV-cable, with firewire, into the cam and the computer. Nothing is happening. I try to open up iMovie but it says ther is no videocamera connected. And then I read on the box, which the videocamera were delivered in, and it says that I need to have an earlier operative system than Mac OS X Tiger, 10.4.3, that I have.
So that i wonder is if I can download or buy an earlier operative system, ex. Panther 10.3, and still have my Tiger operative system in the computer.
Do you knoe what I'm going to do? Please help me!
Thank You Max Landegren, Stockholm, Sweden

And then I read on the box,
which the videocamera were delivered in, and it says
that I need to have an earlier operative system than
Mac OS X Tiger, 10.4.3, that I have.
Max, it's unlikely the camera requires Panther. The box was probably printed before Tiger was available. If the camera ran in Panther, mostly likely it will run in Tiger too. That's how these things usually work.
Before going to all the trouble to locate and install Panther, I suggest you try to get your camera to work in Tiger. iMovie Help has some tips about troubleshooting FireWire, as well as Apple's online information for iMovie. Both are available in iMovie's Help menu.

    Hi Steve,
If this is dot mac or Mobile me you can still use IMAP eMail in the iCloud.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT - DO NOT TRY TO ALTER YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNT.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 993
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
        •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 587
        •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

Other options not covered in the article:
    1) You can plug both in under the same computer username and same iTunes Apple ID and give each device it's own name. You should be able to manage them as separate devices with different media, apps and screen layouts. All of your media would be in a common pool, though.
    2) Under one computer username, you can login and logout of two different iTunes Apple IDs. This option is cleaner with two computer usernames but it can be done with one.

I just downloaded Yosemite operating system and my computer is extremely slow but also not opening my Adobe applications.  Can anyone help?  thanks!

First, tell Apple about your problems... with details... and hope for an update that fixes your slowness
Second, Yosemite sometimes has problems, often related to "default" permissions needing to be changed
