Two Partition Limit on 2 TB External List?

I formatted a 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim portable drive as MacOs Journal Extended Journaled (Encrypted). I tried to create four partitions on the drive, but got a message stating that not more than two partitions could be created. I've never run into this before. Any ideas? Seagate was no help. Thanks.

UPDATE FROM OP:
Figuring I ran into some fluke, I took Barney's advice and started over. This time, I formatted the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - i.e., no encryption. I was able to create three partitions in the normal fashion without a problem. I attempted to encrypt the three partitions from the Finder but received the following error message: "A Recovery System for the targeted disk is required."
So I erased the drive again and formatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted). Once again, I was unable to create more than two partitions. Specifically, one partition was created by default and the number of possible partitions in the dropdown menu was limited to two. The following message appeared: "You may only split this partition into two. To do this, click +."
Congratulations to me - I was able to reproduce my original problem. For some reason, encryption seems to stymie my efforts to create more than two partitions on this drive. Any further ideas?

  • One (NTFS) out of two partitions on a WD 1TB external won't mount after improper ejection

I've got a 1tb external WD My Passport hard drive that I have formatted into two partitions (One FAT32 that carries a bootable Windows 7 install for bootcamp and the like, one NTFS that holds all of my movies and TV shows). Originally, I set my MBP up to read/write to the NTFS partition via the method in this link: http://http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57588773-263/how-to-manually-enable- ntfs-read-and-write-in-os-x/. Everything was peachy; I could get onto that partition on my Bootcamped Windows and on OS X both.
So I took my trusty media library with me to Afghanistan. Seeing as I don't have a lot of options to back up all that data, whenever I wanted to watch something I would get my HD out of its safe place in my backpack, copy the file onto my MBP, replace my HD back in its sanctuary, and watch straight off of my computer.
This time, though, since I was only watching one 20-minute episode of Batman Beyond before I got in the shower while I drank my post-workout shake, I didn't bother with my safe method. SURE ENOUGH, in the middle of the episode, I knock my HD straight off of my bunk, it falls off of the cable, and lands on the floor.
My first thought was that I might have broken an armature or dislodged the spindle/platter assembly. However, the drive spins up fine, doesn't make any noise, and the vibration in it feels normal. Also, I can still see the my FAT32 partition like so: http://i.imgur.com/S0rF0wK.jpg
I can also see my old partition in Disk Utility, but can't manually mount it: http://i.imgur.com/A44Ld4P.jpg (indeed, my name is Forrest)
Nor can I mount it manually through Terminal diskutil commands, but I think I may not be doing this right: http://i.imgur.com/fx3H9QH.jpg
I realize that I may have corrupted something and that my last option might be to erase/reformat, but I would REALLY prefer not to go down that road right now; I barely have Internet much less the ability to repopulate a media library.
    I tried:
    -restarting my computer (of course)
    -dismounting/remounting HD
    -sighing heavily
-viewing the HD from Windows (which sees the FAT32, and sees a drive letter for the NTFS but won't read it, just hangs when I try to access it)
-using chkdsk from Windows (get error that I need to be running in an "elevated mode" for that operation, which is something else I'll be addressing soon)
    -cursing
-mounting manually with Terminal commands (see above)
-coming here to beg the gods' forgiveness and hopefully get advice
Tell me how to fix this and keep all of my movies and TV shows and I will owe you one (1) undying gratitude.

Hi Kool G4. I think that I'll take a trip to Tek Serve tomorrow and see what they can do. I was hoping for the same luck I had with the internal one re-appearing, but so far nothing.
I guess that every once in a while when something is improperly ejected, the warning is valid. There have been so many improper ejections (not on this drive) that have not resulted in a failed drive. My luck, and on my very important drive. Bummer.
But thanks to all of you for offering your wisdom.
I'm going to leave it overnight plugged in just in case it's just a slow startup issue. *crossing fingers*
Otherwise, I do hope that a specialist can recover the data.

  • Encrypting an external disk with two partitions

I have a large external disk that I'm going to be using for Carbon Copy Cloner backups.  I want the disk to have two partitions, and I want the whole thing to be encrypted with Full Disk Encryption.  Should I (a) first partition the disk and then encrypt each partition, or (b) encrypt the physical disk and then partition the result?  I think (a) is the best path (it looks like it's at least possible), but advice would be appreciated -- thanks!

    Hi,
according to this http://support.mediafour.com/entries/170474-macdrive-compatibility-with-hard-dis ks-with-multiple-partition-types-i-e-dual-format that 'feature' is currently not supported by MAcDrive.

  • After formatting and creating two partitions on my external HD, why is Time Machine taking 25x longer to perform a backup?

    Hi.
I bought a macbookpro 13"retina, new two weeks ago and a G-tech 1TB external drive from the apple store. It's my first mac.
I performed a backup, using Time Machine, which copied 18 GB onto he 1TB external HD in around 20 minutes.
After a little more reading, I realised I should use Disk utility to partition the 1TB external G-tech drive into a 250gb partition, and a 750gb partition.
[My MBP has a 250gb flash HD. I'll use the other 750gb for storage of my other files, like photos, music etc.]
So, using disk utility I formatted the 1TB exernal drive, then created two partitions.
However, I've started backing up my data using time machine again, onto the 250gb partition, on the external drive, and its now taking 5 hours to copy the 19.81GB
So why is it taking 25x longer than the first time I did it? [First time it took 20 minutes]
    Thanks

Since performing the fist backup, a couple of days ago, which took twenty minutes, and the second backup, which is taking 5 hours, I installed MS office for Mac 2011 and Silverlight.

  • External List ,correlation between two tables

    Hello Experts ,
I'm displaying 2 different tables  with 2 different external list ,
in one table 1 i have ID, Name ,Body and in the other table (table 2) i have ID ,NAME-ID,
there is a way to display a drop down select list in NAME-ID that show's the Name in table 1
and when the user select it its will wright in NAME-ID the ID from Table 1 ?
thanks in advance for your help

    Hello Phil,
Problem here is that you have Class B defined as aggregate, and then have a 1:1 mapping to it from A. This is not allowed, since B is an aggregate collection type. So you have basically told TopLink that B has a primary key in the 1:1 mapping and is a separate class, but on B's descriptor you set it to be a dependent class. The conflict causes this problem when TopLink goes to register the 1:1 mapping.
Since in this case B seems like it can realistically exist independent of the A class, you should not be using an aggregate collection. Instead, you should be using a 1:M mapping and, if required, you can set this to be a privately owned relationship.
    Best Regards,
    Chris

  • Can I combine two partitions without losing data on one?

So if I have two partitions on one hard drive can I combine them without losing the data that is on one of them?  If not, could I just do a time machine backup, combine the two partitions, and then restore the time machine backup?  Would that work?

If the other partition was created with BootCamp it can be deleted in Bootcamp and merged back into OS X.
It might be possible to rename the partition "BOOTCAMP" in Disk Utility and formatted MSDOS to trick Boot Camp into thinking it is a Bootcamp parititon and merging it back into OS X. (haven't tried this so I don't know if it works or not yet) I would first make a clone below before attempting this method.
TimeMachine restores are fraught with problems on these forums.
What I would do in your case is use another equal or larger sized (than your primary boot drive), blank, Disk Utility HFS+Journaled formatted, external powered drive to Carbon Copy Clone your OS X boot partition to it, then Disk Utility > Repair Permissions on both (you can ignore the list that shows).
What this does is gives you a "hold the option key" bootable clone, which while booted from it, check it out first and then use Disk Utility to completey (select the hard drive name) format the entire primary boot drive (HFS+ Journaled of course).
Then simply CCC back onto the primary boot drive. Then run ALL of OnyX's maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot. Speedy machine here we come.   (note: Cloning optimizes the drive by the order of the alphabetical order files in the Root Level, leaving "Users" last where the most change and slowdown in drive performance occurs, OnyX cleans out the caches and rebuilds Spotlight, more performance)
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
The new version of CCC has gotten a bit more complicated, including a archiving of files changed from between updated clones, however the default settings are fine for your first time clone to a blank drive. So all you really have to do is select the "From" and "To" drives and click Clone.
Clones are wonderful, it's a exact copy of whats on your primary boot drive, so far in the many years I've used clones everything has worked on the same machine, everything.
TimeMachine drives are not bootable, leaving you stuck if your hard drive dies or you can't boot from the OS X install disks.
You can first make a clone so you have that method, then c boot off the 10.6 installer disk and use TimeMachine that way to restore to the newly formatted drive (use Disk Utility under the Utilities menu, second screen in) I haven't tried this myself, prefering clones instead as it's less headaches.
Remmeber to ALWAYS have two backups of your data at all times, (erasing your drive leaves you with only one copy) in this case you would have a clone and a TM backup, in case one method fails (less likely the clone), then you got the other method.

  • I have an old G3 I would like to donate, but I have forgotten my password and cannot erase the two partitions on my disk.

I have an old G3 I would like to donate, but I have forgotten my admin password and cannot erase the two partitions on my disk. I have the CD for 10.3.9 that one partition is running but when I boot from the CD, it wants to set up by connecting to the internet and I cannot connect on the old machine.
I've tried several schemes by logging in with command s and carefully typing directions, but when I reboot it just gives me the old admin.
It keeps trying to connect to network which I do not want to do.
I guess no one really wants an old G3 but I used it for years and I hate to destroy it.

    Sure you can.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
No password is required for this unless you set up a firmware password.

  • Error in sharepoint external list while creating record with same id (this id is primary key)

    Hi,
I have created one external content type in sharepoint designer to insert/update/delete table data.
This table contains Primary key constraint.
Then I have added this external content type to Sharepoint out of box List.
Insert/Update/Delete is working fine. But when I am trying to insert record with the same id which is already exist in table, page crashed and its giving me following error:
“Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_tbl_Accounts'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.tbl_Accounts'.
The duplicate key value is (1). The statement has been terminated.”
So I want to handle this exception. Can we show any popup message to hide this error?

  • Accessing External List that uses BCS with CAML Query

    Hi,
I have an external list that uses BCS to sql server. I can view the list with  Lists.asmx web service GetLlistItems. However, I get an parameter error when trying to add to the list with UpdateListItems. I will be changing over sharepoint lists to sql
tables using BCS to connect to them and I need it to be seamless to clients that do CRUD operations using CAML. Are there any instructions on creating such an external list that maintains compatibility with ordinary sharepoint lists?

    CRUD options are fine.
    Here's what I've done.
    Created ECT.
Created Read list & read item options.
Set a limit for 200 items (for testing purposes only)
Created external list based upon ECT created above.
Opened external list in web browser and I'm able to open, edit & add items without issue.
What I'd like is to have a simple HTML type form above the list (like in a Content Editor web part with a few text boxes and a 'search' button.  I've tried the link below but it either crashes Sharepoint Designer when I'm defining the parameters or
if it works there the button doesn't work.

  • Lookup column only return 201 items from external list

I have a BCS external list which contains about 700 items. I already set the BCS Throttle limit to 50000 items (default) and 1000000 (max). I can view all 700 items in the external list.
I created a regular lookup column in a custom list to lookup the external list. When I click the drop-down, it only returns the first 201 items with a red message "Warning: Too many results have
been returned. This result set may be incomplete or truncated.". I need all items available for selection so set up a filer will not work for me.
I just wonder if there is any work around for the issue. Many thanks.

This is unfortunately the default behavior with external content type. The limit is set at 201.  You can however avoid this by setting appropriate filters to limit the number of results to less than 200. The user can use wildcards in their filter to
more fine tune the results returned.
Read more on how to set filters on external content type here:

    Enlarging a volume
If you have multiple volumes on a disk and one is running out of space, you may be able to enlarge it
without losing any of its data.
To enlarge a volume, you must delete the volume that comes after it on the disk, and then move the
volume’s end point into the freed space. You can’t enlarge the last volume on a disk. You can see the
order of the volumes in Disk Utility by selecting the disk, clicking Partition, and looking at the Volume
    Scheme list.
All data on the deleted volume will be erased. Be sure to back up your disk’s data before you begin.
    To enlarge a volume:
From the list at the left, select the disk that contains the volume you want to enlarge, and then click
    Partition.
In the Volume Scheme list, select the volume beneath the volume you want to enlarge, and then click
    Delete〔-〕.
The volume is immediately erased, leaving the space it formerly occupied available.
    Resize the volume.
You can drag the divider at the bottom of the volume in the Volume Scheme list, or you can select the
volume, and then enter a value in the Size field.
If the enlarged volume doesn’t use all the space from the deleted volume, you can create new volumes
    in the unused space.
To create a new volume, click Add〔+〕, select the new volume, and choose its name, format, and size.
    Click Apply.
Disk Utility enlarges the volume and creates any new volumes.

No need to format to NTFS, you can convert to NTFS with no destruction of data.
Just format to FAT in Disk Utility, then when accessing the FAT drive in WIndows:
*To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt*
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb456984.aspx
Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
*In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs*
For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.
