Two problems: Are they related?

MacBook running 10.5.2; AP Express; DSL modem
I got an alert from Apple when I opened the Airport Utility that I should download a firmware upgrade. I think it was 6.3. Anyway I did it and went through the process. The base station restarted and would not connect. I got a blinking orange light. That's one problem. The other is that when I tried to get online using an ethernet cable from the modem to my laptop, I just got a self-assigned IP. I restarted and reset the laptop and the modem in that order and in reverse. I went through the Setup Asst. process countless times. I called the ISP and had them test what they could from their end and they said all was okay. So my questions are: how the heck do I re-configure or reinstall the Express's firmware? Is it possible that the firmware install somehow screwed up the ethernet connection, as bloody unlikely as that seems or was this the alltime worst coincidence that my ethernet connection fortuitously went south at the same time as my firmware upgrade? And how do I get the ethernet connection to work? Before the upgrade, everything worked flawlessly. This was the classic case of if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hello IBHIPRU,
I see that you are having some printing issues when attempting to print your emails.
I do have two questions for you.
The first is, are you using the officejet 6600 when printing or is this a different printer that what you have listed on past posts?
The second question is, you stated that you used a "troubleshooting program ".  Was this the HP Print and Scan Doctor?  If not, please try the Doctor and let me know the results.
Write me back when you have time.

  • Iweb problems and idisk problems are they related?

I have not been able to publish siince upgrading to iweb1.1 two days ago I get the same message everytime "Publish failed due to a network error. Check your Internet connection and try again."
Also I can't get into "idisk" on the web or the finder bar. It gives the message "the volume for "idisk" cannot be found".
I am wondering if these are related?

It could very well have been related. There was a period of time yesterday when the iDisk server was down.

  • Clock problem and shutdown problem! Are they related?

Having a problem with my Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5
A few days ago I noticed that my clock was not showing in the menu bar in the upper right corner of my desktop.
I went into System Preferences and went to Date & Time. Under the clock tab “Show Date and Time in Menu Bar” the box was not checked off. I checked it off and went to the “Date and Time” tab. The date and time was correct. I then checked the box “Click the lock to prevent further changes” to lock it. The date and time did not show up in the menu bar. I then went back to the tab “Show Date and Time in Menu Bar” and the box I checked was not checked off even thought the lock was still locked.
I then moved my cursor up to the menu bar in the upper right corner to see what would happen and the spinning beach ball started up but only for the original icons such as Bluetooth, Mobile Me (which I do not use), Time Machine, Spaces (doesn’t indicated the number when I switch Spaces, etc. The icons Norton Anti Virus and Tech Tool Pro in the menu bar are okay.
Also, when I attempt to shut down my computer the system clears the icons from my desktop except for a picture I have on my desktop and I get a gray wheel spinning and the system just hangs until I press and hold the on/off switch. I don’t know if the clock and shutdown problems are related.
The only new software I loaded recently was Skype with Logitech WebCam for the Mac and Quicken 2007 (Had a problem with Quicken 2006). They both are working okay.
And ideas on why I cannot get my clock to show up and my computer to shutdown?

You may have to consider a new post in the Hardware forum area for the computer
model and build/year; if there is a possibility of some basis the matter could be in
the machine and not the software running within it.
Your last two/three posts are in the Leopard 10.5(.8) forum area and do indicate
some kind of problem where troubleshooting the computer to discover if the matter
at hand would be either hardware or software based, may be the way to go.
The link to the 10.6 Snow Leopard forum won't be of help if your computer is a
PPC-based G5 tower, or other older pre-Intel configuration. And I remember
your earlier questions about the iMac G4 and some other issues in the past.
You may ask the moderators to put your post in a new thread of its own, in the
Leopard 10.5 area; so as to not 'piggy-back' another topic; even though some
of the odd issues you've had seem similar to this OP's topic line and appear to
    be in the same general series of hardware. {The question here seems valid.}
The routine suggestions to check, test, verify, and perhaps repair or replace
the system; save a bootable clone to suitable external standalone device if
testing a suspect computer's viability is recommended; and the basics if not
already tried to help isolate the issue(s) as you've posted elsewhere, may be
of some help to try and do; so in that matter, a new thread of your own is best
for your own directed feedback. Since this kind of advice applies to most any
situation, including troubleshooting what may be hardware or software, I'm
adding my two and three-tenths cents worth here.
Your original included Apple Hardware Test may be of some help, in the process
of elimination; but is not conclusive, so other methods would be also suggested.
Some ideas appear to cover the same ground. However, system corruption or
disc failure can also manifest itself in odd ways & affect things indirectly for a time.

So, at the risk of inadvertently alienating the OP, I am posting this as
a general help to following readers at some later time; and it may not
be too simple for a refresh course.
Some software issues can be resolved by repairing disk permissions,
and re-applying the last OS X update Combo file over the same one
already in the system; or if not up-to-date already, check & repair all
the general items and then apply the last Combo update.
A too-full hard disk drive can compromise the system integrity, so that
is a matter of course to keep up on what resources exist and remain
for the OS X to function correctly and for apps to multi-task together.
    However that works out...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Several issues - are they related?

I've been experiencing several issues with my new IMac, and I wonder if they are related.
First, the Adobe Flash plug in for Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. Then, Safari would start closing on its own. Finally, IPhoto also would suddenly quit.
This morning, I tried a manual update of software. It stopped about 3/4 of the way through with a message that the update may have been corrupted. It will try the install again the next time Updater runs.
I thought of putting these issues out there on their respective software forums, but I am guessing that they are all related since they all happened at the same time. Thank you, in advance, for any clues you can give to solving this mystery.

    Hi-
Please clarify- which iMac are you using? One of the new 27" or 21" iMacs? If not, what exactly?
First, the Adobe Flash plug in for Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. Then, Safari would start closing on its own. Finally, IPhoto also would suddenly quit.
What exactly is happening here? Is some flash playing, and then suddenly without any error message Safari quits? What website? All or just some (or random?)
Immediately after safari quits, iPhoto also quits? No error message- it just quits?
This morning, I tried a manual update of software. It stopped about 3/4 of the way through with a message that the update may have been corrupted. It will try the install again the next time Updater runs.
Please explain- exactly what do you mean by 'Manual Update of software?" Exactly what file did you download from Apple.com to do this manual update?
I thought of putting these issues out there on their respective software forums, but I am guessing that they are all related since they all happened at the same time. Thank you, in advance, for any clues you can give to solving this mystery.
There are a lot of variables going on here- maybe it is all related, or maybe not. We need to isolate some of these variables so we can troubleshoot in a systematic way.

  • Can't play videos on iPhoto after installing Yosemite, also getting JRE error. Are they related?

When I start Mac, I get following error regarding JRE requirement. I have updated JRE 8 from Oracle website, but I still get the same error. This has started after I updated to Yosemite.
Also when I click on video I get following error: "A necessary data reference could not be resolved." Hence am unable to play any videos.
Are these related, can someone help?
Do note that I have MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) with OS X Yosemite (10.10) and iPhoto 9.6.

I'd ask about the JRE issue on the Using Mac OS X forum.
The videos are not necessarily gone:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Multiple problems....are they related?

I started out having a problem with iPhoto and Old Toad has been helping me with it and, I think, if I can just get these other problems straightened out I'll be able to finally fix iPhoto.
In the midst of working on iPhoto I got a message to be sure my hard disk had enough space...this has been going on for some time with me continuing to delete files. Checked on it this time and it showed no available space...even though I've added no other apps and have moved several thousand pics to an external hard drive. Today I deleted 2005 & 2006 Quicken from the hard drive and it showed no addition space available...also happened before. During this process I checked my email...Mac Mail...and get a message that my 'home folder' is full etc. and had to quit it until I empty my folder out...I've never seen this before. Also, yesterday, I got a message while typing an email that the 'message could not be saved ' and I had deleted 5 emails right before that and they're back.
Is something wrong with my hard drive that could be causing these problems?
Thanks for any and all help....
    Lanna

It sounds like your hard drive is way too full, and that is what lies behind all of your problems. Go to >About this Mac>More Info> Hardware>ATA bus and take a look at your hard drive. See how much space is available--it should be 15%-20% of the total for OS X to work properly. Since you say you don't have any available space, your drive doesn't have the free space it needs.
You need to make room on your hard drive or you risk a crash and data loss. If you haven't emptied the trash after deleting files, do so, as you won't get the space back until you do. Very likely you will need to move more files to your external drive. Media files tend to take up more room than documents, so think about moving those first.
    Good luck!

  • Azure is a shade of blue the past tense of msft os is blew are they related

Between Windows 7 & Windows 8, I have purchased 8 PCs and 14 OS in just over a year. Each one fails in the exact same sequence of systems. I have paid for windows remote support for full year and have gotten competent tech 2/18 times. In the 2 cases
that the level 2 tech knew as much as I did about issue, they were unable to fix. Not that it would have done any good since any new OS, any new hard drive, any new PC is immediately corrupted, but I was promised two sets of windows 7 & 8 64 bit OS, 8
    Home Premium, 7 Professional Plus.
The malware simply exploits MSFTs glaring weaknesses, particularly UAC, allowing every corrupted drive, folder, file and registry key greater security than owner and anti-virus/antimalware software can ever attain. These files cannot be removed using command
line, in safe mode, by taking ownership or by any of the suggestions in the 12 page, "how to frustrate customers and avoid addressing actual issue" sub-titled, "When your a monopoly, you don't need to provide service". Every msft tech ignores
the real world with grayed out buttons, denied access, permissions that may have worked theoretically but have never, will never work in real world. only in "WindowsWorld". I could and have gone on much longer at the rage and helplessness cultivated
by a company who had a chance to do things right but decided that $ spent on serving customers doesn't get you to hang out with Bono nearly as much as throwing the $ saved by not providing any reasonable service to customers who made YES-YOU MR. & MRS.
GATES unfathomably wealthy with the same American spirit embodied by Rocks, Carnegies ad nauseum which is, WE'RE A MONOPOLY SO>>FUCK "EM.
Now, if there were a way to destroy 1) home group 2) the worst idea in tech. ever, the UAC 3) the MMC. msft might be able to come up with something close to XP, the last OS worth a shit made by msft. Instead msft support-oxymoronic as that is, reprints the
same shit that does not and has never worked, like 1) simply change permissions 2) simply take ownership of object or folder or 3) simply re0-install the same OS that has yet to work once and see if that helps-oh, we've been told a million time by customers
that, :"IT'S THE UAC, STUPID? WE CAN'T DELETE MALWARE THAT HAS reduced are owner permissions to standard and allowed malware, decades ahead of msft technology becausae hackers don't waste time changing CEOs to take turns inventing phones, tablets
etc.  Once, please listen to your customers Bill. We already hate the technology that you force us to buy because there is no alternative. Are you, Paul, Steve, or whatever CHIMP is currently being overpaid as CEO actually that stupid to think anyone
would buy technology of any sort where there are alternatives when we are disgusted with the software we need to buy because there are no alternatives? Are you that divorced from reality?
Does this sound more like venting pent up bitterness with a few questions thrown in? YES IT IS. Why, because in the past 16 months I've spent twice the revenue my home based company has made on your technology and THE MOST EXPENSIVE POSSIBLE SUPPORT FOR
THAT IN HOPES THAT 100000 MONLEYS HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF COMING UP WITH HAMLET. Unfortunately, I've bought as much of the monkeyshit as I could afford, paid your techs who guaranteed their service but who have hung up on me, lied to me or just been unable
to fix what your engineers make. Of the 18 times I've gotten through to support, IU've called 5x that much but msft puts enough roadblocks between itself sand its customers that only the most desperate are willing to suffer the indignity of being a msft
customer. I'm not even counting the  third multiple of my annual revenue I've spent on 3rd party security. That works just enough to find the 80 corrupt files and 118 corrupt registry keys but like everything else, is then paralyzed by that UAC serving
to protect system files corrupted beyond belief, along with the MBR and UAC which, thanks so much, are the two areas corrupted the most but untouched by any re--installation of the OS so when your well paid techs recommend, I think we're going to wipe the
drive and mail you a new OS. I simply hang up. Having been lied to 4 times about the same 2 OS. Having to spend hours upon hours trying to re-activate msft ofc over the phone because it's removed with the weekly disk wipe. Getting told, Mr. Smith, we are not
going to allow you to activate these programs anymore. To which I politely respond. I understand. I have nothing better to do than to stay on hold for an hour and wait another hour for you to verify my info so I can spend another hour downloading the same
Office programs IU've installed 20 times in the past but had to do so again because your OS is so shitty. Sorry if I've inconvenienced you. It's just that I've spent $8,000 on PCs this year, an additional $800 on OS (because msft never sent the OS they promised,
about $500 on security, almost $1000 on PC repair & hundreds of hours not using but figuring out how to keep from losing the files I've so painstakingly put together after the last time I lost them and BTW I want to be writing this letter at 4:00 on a
Saturday as much as I want to buy msft devices across the board.
So besides that, iuf you can suggest anyway that I can shred the UAC, send the homegroup into an alternate universe or in anyway get the finely engineered UAC to protect my PC instead of my MF malware, I'd be truly indebted. I even bought a MAC but the industry
I'm in does not make Mac compatible software, I had to boot camp Windows in to run it. Like everywhere else it goes, there went the neighborhood, bootcamped windows got corrupted just as fast as freestanding windows does. It even destroyed the partition separating
Mac from Windows software. BTW, the MAC has worked perfectly through 3/4 of the pcs and OS I had to buy and watch get infected without being on internet and only having security software from cds install onto it. Is it evil or is it msft or is there a difference.
I finally had to spend an extra $1,000 on a hosted version of the software I use for work so including expenses caused by Windows instead of just Windows expenses, I've my expenses exceeded  revenue by 550% in 2012/2013. Unfortuantely, unlike msft,
I'm not in violation of the Sherman act, again unlike msft, I feel bad ripping off mu customers and besides, they wouldn't understand if I told them I wasn't going to do anything about their issues, I was going to Davos with Bono and a few other effete
incredibly overpaid colleagues of mine instead of listening to you complain about my products. Just wait, that new phone is going to make our shAREHOLDERS GO WILD ( ME PAUL, & STEVE ARE THE SHAREHOLDERS WHO WILL BENEFIT THE MOST).  Does anyone ever
allow Bill to see letters like these and far, far worse about the products we're forced to buy whenever we buy a new computer. Or does he simply surround himself with acolytes, sycophants, who say , " oh Bill, you and msft popularity ratings have soared
to yet another all time high. Everyone loves us. We're almost as popular as G.W. Bush. Or does anybody tell him that his popularity is somewhere between the Taliban and Dengue Fever. Thank you for your anticipated help.

Thanks for the reply. I already turned it off in both Safari and Spotlight preferences. However the problem persists. The process still runs, and from time to time it decides to leak all the memory as well. I really can't understand what the reason might be.
To be clear, in Safari-->Preferences-->Search-->Smart search field-->"Include Spotlight Suggestions" is un-checked. In Spotlight preferences all three "Spotlight Suggestions", "Bookmarks & History" and "Bing Web Searches" are un-checked. Process still runs under Spotlight as can be seen here:
After the last post I let it run for a while when it happened again, and below is just before i terminated it. Look at the memory usage!

  • Am prompted to save a web page as a file before I can print it. How to fix it. Also Yahoo toobar was installed. Are they related

Someone asked if I could help with this problem they are having with Firefox with Windows XP.
There are a couple things going on that may or may not be related.
Firstly the Yahoo toolbar was installed in Firefox. I assume this was bundled with another program or update.
Also, if you try to print a webpage from within Firefox you are prompted to save the file first. I tried printing a page from Firefox on my computer (Firefox 30 Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint - 1.0) and was not prompted to save the file first.
I'm assuming that this issue is related to the Yahoo toolbar.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi muttleytm,
The official download is not bundled with the toolbar. [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/]
Reset the printing settings/preferences with this :[[Fix printing problems in Firefox]] ]
And you can try to disable the toolbar temporarily or try safe mode if there are other add ons installed: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]

  • HR Qualifications and Proficiencies how are they related ? Which table ?

    Hi all
People have qualifications, qualifications have proficiencies, proficiencies have proficiency scales.
Table HRP1001 contains personel numbers and the qualifiation objects that are related to them.
Table HRP1000 contains loads of objects including the qualifications IDs with object type 'Q'.
Table T77TS holds the Proficiency IDs and text.
Table T77TP holds the Proficiency Scale IDs and Texts
But where (which table) is the relationship between the qualification and its accociated proficiency stored.
In short I am trying to report on people with a particular proficiency level for a particulat qualification but can not make the link between qualification and proficiency. It must be stored somwhere !
    cheers hugh

    Hi
Just to qualify, I'm looking at qualifications associated with an employee, not those associated with a post so I don't think they are in IT0024.
    from Volkers post...
"OTYPE P (person) related to OTYPE Q via RSIGN = A and RELAT = 032
and OType Q is related to Person via B 032"
But what links OType Q or A 032 to a proficiency and proficiency scale ?
    cheers Hugh

  • The MacBook Pro problems - are they a regional issue ?

I spent a couple of hours today in my local Apple Center here in Finland.
I had a long talk with the 2 guys that work there, had a look at the new MBP. Got my face right down on the machine, couldnt hear anything. Yes the casing below the screen felt hot but thats all.
I asked them about the issues being discussed; they told me they had read all the discussions & were aware of the issues.
They also told me they had sold 40 - 50 MB Pros and NOT ONE had come back or even generated a phone call.
I am wondering if you guys in the USA have a bad batch from one of the factorys ????
Regarding BootCamp - the guys had installed it on several machines and not experienced any of the partition problems thats also being discussed for dual booting OSX and XP.

    Hello syntrak
Don't you think that maybe more than 40-50 laptops get sold in the U.S. I got mine in Helsinki, Finland and it had the CPU whine. After one week I returned the machine, because Apple would do nothing about it. The demo machine at the store also had the same problem. The salesmen were equally annoyed about the whine when they learned about it.
It's a shame that the MBP has the whine. I would definitely have one if it didn't whine. I will rather live without the MBP than listen to the whine.
And do also remember that not all of us Europeans speak English or read these forums... Also worldwide only some of those who have problems or questions come here.
The good thing is that because of the same reason that the whine exists we will get rid of it soon: fast product cycles. There will a new model soon and hopefully that will be closer to flawless.

  • How can I tell if my start up problems are RAM related.

I keep getting a blank white page a third of the way thru my startup sequence. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this but I now think it is due to a faulty RAM card. How can I find out if it is due to a bad RAM card or not?

Faulty RAM or slots at startup are generally detected during the process and signaled by tones before the computer even puts the screen with the Apple logo up. Do you hear startup tones? If there are no tones, then it more likely is the hard drive.

  • When i go to type in pages, nothing shows?  I recently had an authorized apple technician replace my hard drive and update my operating system to MAC OS X 10.6.8 .  Are they related. I Have Pages 08' 3.0.1

When I go to type in Pages, nothing shows.  I am able to open up and click on word processing template etc. I have a fairly old IMac and just updated my operating to OSX 10.6.8.  I'm wondering if the upgrade affected Pages - have  Pages 08 version 3.0.1.  tried restarting but did not work.

Thanks for your help.  I downloaded the update from the link, however, this did not automatically update my Pages.  Is there something else that I have to do? • Locking and INITRANS setting: Are they related?

    DB Version:10gR2
For one our applications, we see locks being held for long periods on three tables. So, one of our DBAs is suggesting to change INITRANS setting for these tables to get rid this locking issue. Does INITRANS setting in anyway cause locking issues?

The INITRANS setting controls Initial Transaction Slots (ITLs). A transaction slot is required for any session that needs to modify a block in an object For tables INITRANS defaults to 1 for indexes, 2. However, if the block has little or no free space then transactions will serialize waiting on a free ITL. This is one cause for data base block waits. By setting INITRANS to the number of expected simultaneous DML.
The maximum value suggested for INITRANS is 100 and settings over this size rarely improve performance. Therefore a setting of INITRANS to the average number of simultaneous DML users and setting MAXTRANS to 100 will most likely result in the best utilization of resources and performance

  • Two problems in BSBM benchmark of Oracle 10g with Jena Adaptor 2.0

    Hi, all.
I'm proceeding BSBM benchmark for Oracle 10g with Jena Adaptor 2.0.
I'm using the codes that were introduced in Jena Adaptor 2.0 guide document, and I've applied Jena patches to Oracle 10g (10.2.0).
But, two problems are occured in benchmark process.
    The first problem is
that 250k dataset(consisted of 250030 triples) loading time elapses over several hours, (See below code snippet.)
    and the other is
that exceptions are occured in some sparql query execution.
I used below queries which have no error in query syntax.
I confirmed that through other benchmark tests.
In case of oracle benchmark test, quey1 is ok. but, query2 makes exception.
Please, look about the Exception message below.
What should I do for getting much better benchmark result?
I appreciate any help or any hint.

    Hi,
The data loading was slow because incremental loading API was used. Please take a look at OracleBulkUpdateHandler. There is an addInBatch API that you can use.
Now regarding queries, Jena Adaptor v2.0 was primarily designed for Oracle Database 11g Release 1.
Recently, a new version of Jena Adaptor has been released and it's optimized for Oracle Database 11g
    Release 2.
Is it possible to run your BSBM benchmark tests against Oracle Database 11g Release 2 using the latest
    Jena Adaptor (http://forums.oracle.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=1179) ?
    Thanks,
    Zhe Wu
