Two Qs: Help to partition 800 FireWire, &Any FireWire 800 Router/Hub users?

Needed more hard drive, so I added a 2TB-FireWire 800 drive to system. First thing on it is time machine backup. Would like to reconfigure it for the backup along with freeing up space on the main internal drive by moving files/applications, etc onto the external drive if possible. Any guidance would be appreciated!

A couple of thoughts. Most folks find less issues if the apps stay with the OS on the same drive, but you can easily move your Home folder to another drive. However, it is not a good idea to keep your home folder and a Time Machine backup on the same drive. If the drive fails you loose your data and its backup in one fell swoop.
Here is a detailed version of moving the home folder that I created in the past for this situation;
1. Go to Macintosh HD/Users/shortname/. Shortname is your Home folder and will have a "house" icon. Copy this folder to the new HDD by drag & drop. When dragging & dropping from one drive to another the originals are not moved, merely copied to the new location. At this point the folder will not have the "house" icon, because it is not yet recognized by Mac OS X as the active Home folder.
2. Go to System Preferences/Accounts. Click the padlock in the lower left and enter your password to unlock the Accounts pane. Control click on your account's name in the left-side column to reveal an Advanced Options in the contextual menu. Click Advanced Options.
3. You will only be concerned with the Home Directory option. This is the path that Mac OS X uses to locate your home folder when you login. It will show the path as /Users/shortname.
Click the Choose button and browse to the Home folder that you copied to the new HDD in Step 1. After you select the new home folder the Home Directory path should change to something similar to /Volumes/shortname.
4. Click OK on the Advance Options dropdown sheet to accept the change. Quit System Preferences. Restart the computer and login as normal.
5. To confirm that the copied home folder on the new HDD is now the active Home folder, using a Finder window browse to the folder on the new HDD and confirm that it now sports the house icon.
6. You have successfully moved your Home folder to the new HDD, so the original Home folder in Machintosh HD/Users/shortname/, including all of its contents can be safely deleted.

  • How to tell if Firewire 400 or 800? In any OS and this laptop: Toshiba Satellite A350D - BA3.

    Hello.
I was wondering how someone can tell the difference between Firewire 400 and 800 in their computer and in this model of Toshiba laptop: Toshiba Satellite A350D - BA3?
If a person looked in device manager or something would it say? With Usb it says Enhanced when it is usb2 compared to usb1. I don't know what usb3 says, I don't have it.
With firewire there is large sizes and small. On my laptop it is a mini firewire and it looks like a 4-pin inside. On the toshiba.ca site, in the product specs, it only says firewire.
I am planning on buying a cord that has a large connection on one end and a small connection size at the other end. Eg: Some cables for firewire are a 4-4pin, 6-4pin, 6-6pin, 9-4pin,9-6pin,9-9pin. There are also firewire 400 to 800 adapters. I'd like to buy the right cord for an external enclosure I bought to connect to the small laptop firewire port. The enclosure is a Vantec NexStar 3, 3.5" enclosure, usb2, eSATA, Firewire a/b. It has two firewire b ports in back, but an included cord converts b-a (the a is still to big for the laptop firewire).
Does anyone know if any of the mini ports are as fast as the larger ports? Will a 9-pin firewire 800 cable converting to a mini connection go at the mini connections speed if it is only firewire 400, I don't think it can force full F800 speed?
    Thanks.

  • Any Firewire 800 Hub recommendations?

So I have been thrilled with my new iMac.
But of course the one limiting factor with the new iMac is the single FW800 port when having multiple FW drives. Daisy chaining of course works, but it also forces you to power up all drives in front of the drive you want in the chain.
On my eMac I had a Belkin FW (400) hub and it was great for having several drives attached to my system and only having to power up the one drive I actually wanted to use.
Anyway, has anyone tried any of the very few FW800 hubs available? And if so how does it perform?
So far I have only run across 2 or 3 models and all are very expensive.

    Kenichi Watanabe wrote:
If you still have that 400 hub and only 400 devices, you can connect it to the 800 port through an adapter (or a cable with the right connectors). If you have one newer 800 device and the rest are 400, connect the 800 device directly and connect the hub off the daisy-chain port. Then connect the other devices to the hub.
Ya there lies the problem, well more of an annoyance than a problem. I have a FW800 drive, so that is plugged in directly to the back of the iMac. I then can daisy chain other FW400 drives off the back of that drive. But it still requires that drive by turned on to get to anything I daisy chain off of it. That FW800 drive has a fan so it is kind of loud so I rather only have it on when I am specifically using the drive.
If the iMacs had TWO FW800 ports then I could plug the FW800 drive into one and my Belkin FW400 hub into the other and then all the FW400 drives into that. Then all drives could be independently powered and will be seen on the Mac.
Hopefully, that will be sufficient until some other third parties create 800 hubs and bring the price down a bit.
Ya, so far I have found two possible hubs but at $$$. One is a three-port FW800 hub for $50 which would give me my two FW800 ports as mentioned above. The other was a nice looking 6-port FW800 hub giving me 5 FW ports to plug drives into that could be powered up and mounted individually. However that one was $100!!!
For the three port one, it almost seems better to find a FW800 enclosure with three FW ports on it (typically two FW800 and one FW400) and don't put a drive into it and use it only as a hub (but have the option of popping in a drive). However I haven't run across one that is cheaper than the 3-port hub yet. But if I get a fanless one, then I can run a drive in it and use it as a mini-hub and not have to hear a fan running when using it mainly as a FW repeater and not actively using the drive in it.
    The search continues!

  • HT4889 Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it show up in the new Mac's computer folder. Help

Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it shows up in the new Mac's computer folder. It seems that Mac-mini Tiger is as it should be and the firewire cable is OK.  Something about the Migration Assistant is being missed, but I have no idea what it is.
    Help

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

  • Audio interface for 24" iMac - conflict between firewire 400 and 800?

    So, what I have now:
2.8ghz iMac, latest model, newest firmware, running OS 10.4.11, connected to an M-Audio Ozonic Firewire 400 interface, and I was hoping to run said interface while ALSO connecting a firewire 800 hard drive for samples, or for recording to.
Alas, as soon as I turn on the firewire 800 drive, a model sold by Other World Computing and containing an Oxford chipset, all audio stops on the Ozonic keyboard and is replaced by clicks and pops. The only way I've found to get the audio back is with a complete restart of the system, with the firewire 800 drive OFF.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the M-Audio device, it's a small keyboard and firewire audio interface in one unit. Perhaps not the highest quality, but my Powerbook G4 1.67 with firewire 800 CAN run both the Ozonic and the firewire 800 drive at the same time. With no interruption in sound playback.
I did some research and discovered that in the iMac I bought, the two firewire channels, 400 and 800, appear to be on the same PCI E bus, and perhaps will NEVER work together.
Is that right? I thought the whole point of firewire was how it's able to negotiate such communications and work seamlessly with other firewire devices. I know, I know, I'm living in dreamland, it's just sad that a much older Apple product (my PPC notebook), can do something a brand new model cannot. Sigh.
Any advice? Any chance 10.5 fixes this?
If not, should my next audio interface be USB 2.0? Any thoughts from the Audio pros out there (besides 'you bought the wrong machine) would be great.

Sorry I can't help with your specific query as I have never used that Audio hardware.
I am a video man myself and went for the 24" 2.8Ghz iMac as i believe the Firewire 400 and 800 Buses are seperate. I know on older iMacs and even the MacPro the FW800 and 400 buses were on the same bus and when connecting a firewire video camera to the FW400 bus, the 800 would lower it's speed to 400 to accomodate or in some cases would lose the connection all together.
I currently have a FW800 Hard drive connected to the FW800 port and a video deck in the FW400 port and they both run at full speed 800/400 respectively.
This leads me to believe Apple have fixed the Firewire sharing problem.
I know it's no help but just though I would share my experience with the Firewire on the new iMac.

  • Aggregate device on the same firewire bus (fireface 800 and Lightbridge

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a aggregate device with my old RME Fireface 800 (on the firewire 400 bus) and this new M-Audio Lightbridge. But allthough I manage to create the device, there is no sound at all. The Fireface acts as digital master via a word clock cable. The Fireface are connected via a 10 m. cable to the rear connection (on my nes Mac Pro) and the Lightbridge are connected to the front. I know it's the same bus using those two connectors, so do you think a separate firewire board would be a solution?
    Regards Stig

So the firewire "bus" and a firewire "interface" are the same thing then? Excuse my ignorance, I've just been put in the position that I needed to know this for the first time with this audio interface problem. The things I used my firewire ports for just worked without me having to learn much about it up until now. Also, I found some posts that the card had some issues functioning in a version of Leopard. I'm about to upgrade from Tiger (finally) directly to Snow Leopard. Do you (or anyone else who sees this) happen to know if there are any issues there? I appreciate the help very much Rod.

  • Please help save my gig.  Any crash report readers?  Logic 7.2.3

I apologize for starting a new thread on an old post. But I'm pretty sure these recent crashes are not the same as the prior ones.
    Thanks in advance.
    Yet another one.
I'm going to repost. I'm at my wit's end. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not one to wear my heart on my sleeve. But I'm halfway through this film. It's been painful with the crashes, the rebuilding ... the work arounds, the bouncing out of instruments to avoid having plug in's before I've really worked out parts ....
I'm about 4 or 5 days behind schedule and I'm going to get fired if I can't find a way to just make music without all these crashes.
    Any help ... please ... ?

    Explanations:
Folder Depth: This number indicates how many folders are nested inside each other. If a disk contains only three
folders and Folder A is inside Folder B and Folder B is inside Folder C, then this disk has a maximum folder depth of
three. Folders nested too deeply can cause software compatibility problems.
Property List: This is a standard file format for storing data and is often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .plist file extension. Corrupt property list files can cause system instability.
Resource Data: This is an older file format for storing data and was often used to store preferences. The names of
these files normally end with a .rsrc file extension. Corrupt resource data files can cause system instability.

  • HELP I partitioned an external hard drive by mistake - how to undo???

    HELP HELP HELP
I just bought a new WD 1TB hard drive (so now I have two) and wanted to partition in (1 partition) but by my stupid mistake I had chosen the wrong hard drive - so now about 1TB worth of music and films and photos (my entire iTunes and iPhoto library is gone - and do not have a back up). I did the partition with Disk Utility.
Is there anyway to get it back???

+*Stop using the drive immediately+* to stop further loss due to files being overwritten.
You need specialized +Data Recovery+ software, or a service that performs the function. It's not cheap, and there are no guarantees.
The app mentioned here most often is +Data Rescue 3,+ but I haven't used it myself, so can't recommend it over any of the others.
Some of these have a free "trial mode," that will tell you if there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file. For more, you have to pay the $$.
You'll also need another drive to receive anything it can recover.
PS. Will order a time machine after submitting this question
You already have +Time Machine.+ It's part of OSX Leopard and Snow Leopard. It can back up to an external drive, or a Time Capsule (Apple hardware - combination of wireless router and hard drive), or a shared drive on another Mac.
When you get to it, you might want to review these:
    Time Machine Tutorial
    Time Machine 101
How to back up and restore your files
    Time Machine Features
Apple - Support - Mac OSX v10.5 Leopard Time Machine
and perhaps browse the Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Look for apps or services under +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.

  • Not able to see any firewire units on the bus overview.

I just bought my second Mini, it had been used by the outlet during a promotion campaign, so I had to restore the OS.
Everything looked fine, but there are two problems I am left with:
Firstly, the FireWire 800 interface seems almost dead. By that I mean, there is power on the bus, but no communication. On the FireWire info page I only get a warning in red letters saying "Warning: Could not list FireWire units". Of course, it does not matter what I connect.
The other issue I experience is that after booting the Mini, it takes 10 to 15 minutes before I am able to have response on keyboard and mouse input.
Any suggestions out there what could be the matter?

Thanx kbrosnan. Enter key will work if my keyboard is Google Keyboard but if i have another keyboard type (C-DAC, GIST Marathi Keyboard) then if I press enter key it will take special invisible character may be carriage return and not getting expected action. Using same C-DAC keyboard I am able to get expected action in another application. So is that browser problem of keyboard problem?

  • Can't run Firewire 800 Drive and Firewire 400 Camera at same time?

I just bought a 1TB firewire 800 drive for time machine. Works great. Problem is, when I plug in my Canon DV via firewire at the same time the 800 is connected it doesn't work. I have to unmount the HD, turn it off, and even THEN it wont recognize the DV camera. I have to physically unplug the firewire 800 to get my Canon DV to mount. Amazing. Never had problems with the DV before. Is there some hardware reason why I can't run an 800 and 400 firewire at the same time? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Some DV cameras won't work with anything else connected to the FireWire bus (the FW400 and FW800 share the same bus)
... in particular Canon cameras (Canon firewire implementation) are very sensitive to other firewire devices.

I opened my account on the MacAir and have the new Mountain Lion showing i purchased. When I open my account on my other two machines it does not show. Any suggestions on why or how to fix?
    iMac and Mac Pro
    Thanks

SADLY  not as i downloaded an upgrad to my original PAGES/
i have in the meantim had to open www.icloud. then from there import the file that i am working on and then check on ipad if it uploaded/ yes it did.
but what a waste of time as it doesn not save any changes done automatically back in the cloud....
i am now downloading the new LION and hope that it will fix the problem
i cant find any other way. I was lead to believe that you wrote, it saved automatically, on to the cloud, you then opened anohter device in anotother country even, and the new file was there, waiting, in its latest version.......
and the same magic was supposed to happen in reverse.
    It doesn't/
if i have to open a browser, go to www.icloud....why on earth did they not just leave us an icon to drop it in in that case?
I hope the new lion will help resolve the isssue/
any other ideas> keep em coming...thank you so much.

  • Help! Can anyone offer any advice re color settings?

Hi all, I just don't know where to begin! Take a look at the screenshots attached.
The two images look completely different. Photoshop CS5 renders the image entirely differently. I now notice that in my old copy of CS3 the image renders way closer to what I see in ACDSee AND in Lightroom. I have NEVER managed to even begin to understand this stuff. There's the monitors, the computer, Photoshop, Lightroom and ACDSee and they all have to interract with one another and... help! Is ACDSee almost accurate? How can I make CS5 look like the images I see in Lightroom and ACDSee? Should I? Then there's the printer I use online to consider. HELP! Can anyone offer any help? All the options under color settings both on CS3 and CS5 are identical and I even tried saving the ones from CS3 and loading them into CS5, just in case, to no avail.
Can anyone offer any help? I also uploaded screenshots of the different settings in ACDSee and in CS5 and CS3 in case that helps. Is it something to do with the Proof Setup settings? They are both set to Working CMYK. Oh, my aching head!
Thanks a lot for any help anyone can offer!
    Phil

Thanks. I think I DO understand the basics of color management. I have attempted to callibrate my monitors many times and even paid someone to do it once all to no avail. I end up with washed out renderings which are different on each of my monitors and look NOTHING like the prints I get. All I'm trying to ascertain is why CS5 would render so entirely differently than ACDSee, Lightroom and even CS3. Even XPlorer2 agrees with everything other than CS5! And yet all the settings in CS5 SEEM to be the same as in CS3 so what else could be causing the washed out look? I'm also noticing CS5 is sometimes showing things marginally out of focus compared to other apps but I won't even get ionto that!
Thanks, and if anyone else has any thoughts on why this would be I'd appreciate it.

  • IPod Connector To Firewire 400 or 800 Cable?

Does such a thing exist? An iPod Dock Connector cable to either Firewire 400 or 800? I've run out of spare USB 2.0 ports on the back of my iMac, but both of my Firewire ports are still available. It would be great if I could connect my iPod Touch to one of these. Is it possible, or do iPods only work with USB 2.0 connections?

I quite agree. Three USB2.0 is extremely paltry, as many as eight would be still be sensible IMHO. I wonder if there are any iMac users without USB hubs.
I'm currently looking at one of these:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
It adds a USB2.0 hub, Firewire Hub and as much external storage as you need (Time Machine etc). Many of these will sit nicely on the iMac's plinth beneath the screen.

  • LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
    I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
    Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains
    I wish you luck
