Two questions about the mac mini

How does one connect an external mic if the audio port is being used for speakers?
Having trouble installing external Newer Tech V2 hard drive thro Fire wire port.
Thx

u need an imic or similar to input audio via usb as the jack connector on the back is output only, well on the G4 it is anyway, i assume its the same in the intel. You could also get a USB microphone instead. heres the imic: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6254000/wo/GY38d OmSXqL4236FZ1DpkFLeSf7/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3

  • Two questions about the new iWeb

    Hi
I've got two questions about the new iWeb.
    1. Is it possible to blog online now? Meaning adding a new blog entry without having to be on your own Mac? This is a feature I've been waiting for since iWeb first was released.
    2. Is it possible to choose the format of images? Earlier editions had the option to "optimize" images but that meant it changed it into .png meaning the site got a lot heavier than if .jpg was used. And since I have relatives who still only have an isdn connection I need to be able to have the website as light as possible.
    thanks

Ah well... thanks for the quick answer

  • Question about using mac mini as a server

I run a small non-profit agency. Our server (A Mac G4 from about 4 years ago) recently died a somewhat painful death, and we need to get a new one. We're trying to be thrifty, but i don't want to get something that won't meet our needs. Our server needs are very basic. No more than 8 people will ever access the server at the same time, and generally it will be 2-4 people at once. We keep Word and Excel docs on it (It used to host our database, but we will have a separate server for our new database). Do you think a Mac Mini with the following specs would meet our needs:
    80 GB Hard Drive
    1 GB RAM
    1.42 GHz PowerPC G4

    Frank:
Thanks so much for responding! One question about your post. When you say that the Mac Mini cannot boot in OS 9, does that mean that if I wanted it to hold Filemaker Pro 4 files (which runs on OS 9), that it cannot do this? We would not be running Filemaker on the Mini, just storing the files. We would run Filemaker off of our desktop computers. Sorry, I don't know a ton about computers, so sometimes I need clarification about the terms that people use.-Rob

  • Thinking about the Mac mini

I've wanting to get a mac and at first I was thinking about buying a Imac at first but then came across the mac mini which is a lot more cheaper and I wont be doing anything crazy on it mainly web surfing, watching videos online, stuff like that about it.  Is the mac mini worth it for me to get it?  Just weighing out all my opinions on what to get.  So is the mac mini a good buy?  This would be my first ever mac computer.

Good idea! That's what I did. Although I bought the Apple Wireless Keyboard and the Magic Trackpad instead of the mouse. I really like the Apple peripherals. And I'm using a 22" Dell monitor that I kept after selling my desktop PC.

  • How about the Mac mini as an Apple TV with a HD?

Has anyone tried a Mac mini with its HDMI output as a substitute for the now old model Apple TV? Yes, it is more expensive and needs a keyboard but it has a huge HD that could hold all your music photos and video and be located right at your TV. Once it booted you could use Front Row and a remote to control it. Once I saw that the Mac mini came with an HDMI output, I wondered if the days were numbered for Apple TV.
    Any obvious downsides?

Has anyone tried a Mac mini with its HDMI output as a substitute for the now old model Apple TV?
Yes, I did and it works great. It's a Mac, so it has the OS X desktop rather than the ATV media browser, but playing HD video through it's HDMI port is great. It can play all of my iTunes videos in addition to just about everything an ATV can't play. I'm using it mainly to watch Hulu Plus at present.
It has been correctly pointed out in the past that some HD rentals from the iTunes store are available only through the ATV, but the new ATV does not have a hard drive, so direct purchases will be impractical. I expect that rental restriction will change in iTunes 10 as all content for the new ATV will have to stream from another location.

  • Opinions about the Mac Mini

    Hey!
I wanna know if Mac mini is good performance.
I would like to use it mainly for Web Design (Photoshop) and Video Editing (less than Web Design though)
    What's your opinions about it.

    Hello,
The Mac Mini is a great computer. And, it is capable of doing everything you are asking about.
But, you will potentially find it less pleasurable to use for intensive graphics work than an iMac.
The Mac Mini uses an Integrated Video system that borrows it's memory from the system's memory. So, it's performance is going to be lower when compared to the iMac.
This primarily affects things being drawn to the screen, not the processing of information / graphics data.
So, you won't find a problem in terms of crunching information and producing stuff. But, you may observe in some situations that the video / pictures being displayed on the screen may lag a bit.
But, you'll usually only notice that in something with a high frame-rate (such as animations) or in 3D drawing or animation.
Otherwise, it's a perfectly fine computer.
It's price is a bit high for the lower performance it offers in comparison to the iMac systems. So, if you really want the best performance and the most for your money, then look towards the iMac.
But, if the performance of the Mac Mini is acceptable to you, and you already have a large monitor that you like, then the Mini may be a good buy for you.
My main complaints are that the CoreDuo model has rather humble specs compared to the iMac and it costs $800 before you add the additional memory that you will definitely want.
The iMac starts at $1299, but comes with a monitor built-in, a much faster microprocessor, a significantly larger hard drive, and a dedicated graphics controller with it's own memory. So, you really get a good deal for your money.
So, the way I see it, the Mini is an excellent computer, but hardly a deal when you compare what you get for your money.
The iMac costs a bit more, but you get a lot for your money.
And, you can always buy a refurbished iMac from Apple, and get the price as low as $1099.
    Apple Certified Refurbished Products
Either way you go, you'll get a great computer. You just need to decide how much computer you want for your money.
If you want a system with a large (and fast) hard drive, a fast graphics card, fast processor, and large screen, then go with the iMac.
If you just want a computer that will get the job done, and have your own monitor already, then the Mac Mini may be a good purchase for you.
You should also consider that Adobe has not upgraded their programs to be "Universal" yet. So, they will run using the slower and more demanding "Rosetta" translator built-into OS X.
This means that you will need more memory (to hold the translated code). It also means that the performance of those programs will be slower. So, you'll want the fastest processor you can get (or afford) to help off-set the reduced performance.
Basically, Rosetta is a translator that converts PowerPC code to run on Intel processors. This translated code is stored in memory while you are using the program, and therefore requires more memory to operate. So, you'll observe a decrease in performance if you start running low on memory. So, you'll want as much memory as you can get (1 GB or 2 GB would be preferable).
Additionally, running in Rosetta is slower. So, you'll want a faster processor to help speed things up a bit when using older PowerPC programs.
It has been said that Photoshop will run acceptably on the iMac, but it is noticeably slower. I could only imagine that it would be even slower on the Mac Mini due to it's slower processor.
    I hope this helps.

  • Question about the Mac Pro's Video Abilities

Hi, I'm strongly considering buying a new Mac. I've looked at the iMacs, but I am more used to Tower PCs. The Mac Pro's design and expandability is what I am used to. My question I have is concerning the graphics ability of the Mac Pro. Currently, I have a HP vs17e LCD monitor and an old Envision EN910 CRT monitor. I am very pleased with both of these monitors. Recently, I hooked up the HP monitor to this old 400MHz G3 8MB Video iMac, and it looked really good except the text sometimes looked a little blurry. I figure that the 8MB video might have had something to do with that. I do not care that much about widescreen displays or high performance $700 displays. I like to use simple, old style monitors. Would I be able to use either one of these screens on the Mac Pro with a GeForce 7300 card? Also, my next question is concerning the use of a TV as a secondary display. Our TV is a big Toshiba that has the old style CRT format. It accepts the yellow video connector and another connector that I think is called the S-Video (black connector). Can I buy adapters that will allow me to use the TV as a second display?

I would venture to say that if the monitor has a digital input capability, then the cable that would be used, is not like the output from the Mac. But, if you want to use the digital to analog adapter that comes with the Mac Pro, or is a purchased item for some of the lower priced Macs, the monitor will work as an analog VGA monitor. The gal that cuts my hair was telling me the horror story abount how they had to spend $200 to connect their Apple Cinema Display to their PC. I am pretty sure you won't have to spend that kind of money. So, if your monitor will accept an analog input, it should work. Many LCD monitors were only analog when they first came out years ago. I took a short look at yours. It appears to only have an analog input. My Mac Pro manual says to use the adapter if you want to hook up an analog VGA monitor. You can verify this at an Apple store before you purchase. I don't see any issues, but it is always best to "get it from the horses mouth".

  • Question about ARD / Mac Mini christmas present from Parents / Remove it???

Few weeks ago, my parents gave me a new Mac Mini 2.53 Intel 4GB 320HD, wireless keyboard and mouse, and even bought iWorks extra. The problem is my parents are too controlling and go to the point of being crazy so I moved 200 miles away. I am in my 30s. This Mac Mini they gave me seemed fine at first, but after installed the iWorks on it, it started behaving strange. I did research on Apple Remote Desktop, and found that directory in /System/Library/CoreServes, my Disk Utility prompted me that something was changed in the directory and the changed would be repaired. In the directory, it is full of Apple Remote Desktop stuff, My Airport connection at the top of my screen now has a seperate area under connections listed Devices with hpsetup listed as connected. Under CoreServices some of the follwing: AddPrinter, boot.efi, ACRCPAgent, CCacheServer, DiskImageMounter, Directory Utility, DumpPanic, Encodings (Folder), Expansion Slot Utility, File Sync, FileSync Agent, Finder, Firmware Updates (Folder), FixupResouceForks, FolderActionsDispatcher and Setup, Installer, Java Launcher / Web Start / Javaversion.plist, KerbrosAgent.bundle, login window, lonelist, manged client, mDNSResponder.bundle, Momory Slot Utility, Menu Extras (folder), MLTEFile.bundle, NetAuthAgent, Network Diagnostics and Network Setup Assistant, OBEXAgent, ODSAgent, pbs, PreferenceSyncClient, Problem Reporter, Report Crash/Panic, Resources (File), RFBEventHelper.bundle, Screen Sharing, searching.bundle/agent, securityagentplugins(folder), smbfileserver.bundle, submitdiaginfo, systemfolderlocialozations(folder), systemuiserver, systemversion.bundle and .plist, ticket viewer, unmountassistant agent, upgrade user, useraccountupgrader, usernotication center, voiceover, workflowserverunner, serverjoiner and scanner, security fixer and proxty and deleted rcd and folder of remotewhatever with ARD files including curtins and tons of files about remote desktop.

/usr/share/derby that can be repaired, is repaired, but shows up again when I verify over and over.
Also a normal error message that can be ignored.
I still can't understand what problem you are finding that leads you to believe that your system is being controlled remotely. I find it very difficult to imagine that your parents or anyone else is controlling your system. Problems with disk permissions, particularly if it involves "hundreds" is far more likely to be a problem with the operating system on your computer, not someone remotely changing things.
Anyway, the test is simple; if your Mac is connected to the Internet, either via wireless or a wired connection, just disconnect it for a while. Then while it's disconnected, make whatever changes you need, etc. If things continue to have problems, then the problem will not be any remote monitoring or control.
Or if you're really concerned, back up any documents, music, photos, etc. you may have on the system, boot it from the Mac OS X installation disks, erase the drive, and reinstall Mac OS X and your applications, and restore the documents from your backup. If there was any sort of "remote monitoring" going on, erasing the drive and reinstalling the OS would remove it.

  • Two questions about the Nokia 920 to Nokia experts...

    Hi,
I am considering the Nokia 920 for replacing my Apple 4. However I have two questions that nobody in a phoneshop can answer. Furthermore I can test it myself as about all Nokia 920 in shops seems to be a dummy for showroom purposes.
Therefore I would appreciate it if somebody can answer these two questions:
    1. Which versions of MS-Office can be read on the Nokia 920?
    2. I have heard there are some difficulties with the Nokia 920 to watch Youtube movies. Is this true? If so, what is  the solution of Nokia. If have heard to load a Metro app that solves these Youtube problems.
I have seen many videos by now about the Nokia 920 but none does cover really these questions. Thanks for taking the time to write me an answer.

  • Two questions about the PSD file format specicaition

I'm a programmer dealing with a project to parse PSD files. When reading the official file format specification, I found that some fields of the file are not clarified:
    1. There is a rectangle structure containing 4 fields: top, left, buttom, right. I wanna know whether these 4 fields can be negative values and is there a rule that the buttom shoud be larger than the top and the right shoud be larger than the left
    2. The PSD file contains a color mode section. But if the color mode is RGB, the color mode section contians no data but a 4-byte length field whose value is set to 0. This is true for files in RGB mode 8-bit channel. But after convert the files to RGB mode 32-bit channel using photoshop, the whole color mode section is no long exist.
These two questions may be somehow technical, I would be thankful if someone can give me a hand.

    1) was covered in the documentation at one time.  Yes, many of them can be negative, that's why they're signed values.  Valid rectangles will have the bottom greater than the top, and the right greater than the left. But you can also have empty rectangles, and sometimes invalid rectangles (because the values don't matter).
    2) Not sure what you're asking...  color mode is just a single enumeration for RGB, CMYK, etc.

  • Two Questions about the SRP527W

    Hello all,
The SRP527 is working fine with VPN however I can't ping my local netwerk on the client side.
The IP addres range is the same as from the remote side only start from 240.
    My internal IP addresses are:
On the side where the router is:
10.10.56.1 <> default gateway from the router
10.10.56.3 <> a Server all the devices there are working and can map to local drives.
    Local:
After connect the VPN I get IP address 10.10.56.240 who also become my default gateway.
Ping to a local printer on 10.10.56.110 give a reply from 10.10.56.1 destination can't be reached
In the client software I can mark Allow local LAN Network. It make no difference still not possible to ping local.
    Second question:
Can I remote install the new firmware without getting problems with my VPN line? Can I still acces the router from remote even after update the firmware?
Thanks for your time to  read this

    Hello Luis Arias,
Thank you for giving me support on the issue.
About the suggestion to change the subnet mask on one side, which I did:
In the router a start address 10.10.56.240 is set with a subnet mask 255.255.0.0 when try to change that subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 the network address is already existent.
Playing with the IP number does not give met the final result 10.10.56.240 with subnet 255.255.255.0 so I needed to leave it with the subnet mask 255.255.0.0
I changed the client side to 10.10.56.20 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and marked the selection allow local LAN.
After make the connection with the VPN I get 10.10.56.240 as local address which also becomes my default gateway.
Still not possible to ping the local printer 10.10.56.110 and get from 10.10.56.1 destination can't be reached
The 10.10.56.1 is the VPN router default gateway address.
Hope it give you enough information to help to solve my problem,
    Greetings,
    Ronald

  • Two questions about the HP Envy 700-230ea before I buy

I'm looking at buying an HP Envy 700-230ea from PC World.  The specs I've seen don't quite answer two questions I need to resolve before committing myself.
    1.  Is the Windows 8.1 OS installed the 64 bit version (I need it to be)
    2.  The machine comes with a 2TB HDD.  But I need to add in a second 2TB HDD.  Is there scope to do this within the machine?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

From your UK HP Site  I'd say it comes with 8.1/ 64bit and it has 3 internal hard disk drive bays; 2 external optical drive bays.
    Link  http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/products/desktops/product-detail.html?oid=6753464#!tab%3Dspecs
Be forewarned HP ENVY desktops do not come with a owners manual, just quick pictorial international set up guides and there is no owner manuals available. The Windows 8.1 OS most can master, but for the computer itself no manual, it's like buying a brand new car trying to figure out all the switches, levers and indicator lamps. Most are easy to figure out but some are not   But I would contact PC World and make sure it has the 64 bit OS.

  • Two questions about the NavBar.

    Hi!
    Two questions please:
    1.
I'm binding my NavBar control to a simple Array() declared at my class.
When my class gets the event "applicationComplete" it calls a function which adds a few items to that array.
    The NavBar updates correctly.
After a while I add more items to that array, but the NavBar doesn't update (no buttons added).
Should I call any function to make it update and add buttons?
    2.
I did a test: By looping, I've created 20 items in an array which is bound to the NavBar and it seems like the NavBar adds these 20 items in a row without checking if it's becoming wider than the stage.
Is there any way to tell it "max items to display", and make it have some sort of "right/left" buttons? Let's say like IE or Firefox 's tabbing system.
See, my app is a bit complex and I can't just put static buttons up.
    Thank you all!

    Thanks Michael,
Look, I'm trying to use the NavBar for an application and the NavBar will be used to navigate through windows.
    Simply as that (:
Now, you do know the Firefox or Internet Explorer browsers, right?
When you open 20 browsing windows on them, the tab bar (they call it the "tab bar") is filled with buttons but shows only few of them, not all of them because there's no space on the screen.
Yet, this tab bar puts two buttons from the left and the right, so the user can navigate in the tab bar to choose the current window.
    How do I do that?
