Two questions before purchase ...

I'm close to purchasing the 1.83ghz macbook from amazon (100 rebate) and have two questions:
1) Does it look like Apple has solved the discoloration problem? I've been looking through the posts here and I see alot of people talking about how their June-July purchased macbooks have this problem so is it too soon for the August ones to have this problem or does it look like Apple has fixed the defect?
2) This is not macbook specific. In Office 2003 (Windows based) you can have the "Speaker Notes" box open during a full screen slide show so you can add notes to the lecture while in slide show mode; does the mac version of office 2004 have this feature?
Thanks for any help.

I would advise ordering one direct from Apple to get the latest build. I'm sure some units out in retail channels have bad logic boards in them yet. Also, you will be waiting 4 MONTHS for that rebate from Amazon.

  • Some quick questions before purchase of MBP

    Hey Guys/Gals,
I've been a PC user all my life, but will now be making a permanent switch to Macs. I've been wanting to buy a MBP since they have been released, but have been hesitant (like many others I think...) about the issues of whine, extreme heat, warped screens etc...
With the recent updates of the logic board and even battery, I think I'm ready to go for it. I just had some quick questions before I place my order:
    1. I could order my MBP from the computer store at my university. Do you guys think that will get me the newest possible MBP or will they maybe get me one that they have had in stock for ages? I really don't want to get stuck with an outdated logic board and/or battery. Is it safest just to order directly from the site?
    2. Although the issue with really hot MBPs seems to have gotten better, I am still quite shocked that people say that temperatures well above 70 Celsius are "within spec". I understand that Apple officially states this and that the Intel chip can handle up to 100 Celsius, but this seems crazy to me Basically, I want to ask if I am correct in my observations that the new Intel chips don't get much hotter than other chips around, but rather Apple has chosen to set the temperature mark that sets off the fans pretty hight (around the 70s if I remember correctly?)
I would assume that in following their "mission" of creating beautifully designed computers, Apple also wants to have a really silent one. Now I'm all for a quiet machine, but I feel as though if fans were on either (a) all the time or (b) when the CPU reaches the high 50s lots of people would be happier.
Anyway, it's just a thought. I noticed there are lots of experts around here, so I'm just interested to hear what you guys think about this approach that Apple seems to have taken. I don't think the heat will stop me from getting this amazing notebook, but it certainly is a little frustrating.
    Any responses are greatly appreciated.

No matter where you take possession there's no assurance of when the machine was manufactured. There is really just as good a chance of getting a perfectly good computer regardless of place of purchase. If there is a problem it's covered under warranty. You can have the computer replaced within the first two weeks. Afterwards they will replace or repair. Without Applecare's extended warranty the computer is warranted for one year after purchase.

You are wrong in your assumption. The Core Duo's maximum temperature is 125C before shutdown. Normal operating temperatures according to Intel's own documentation is 50-70C under average load. MBPs under heavy load will typically reach core temperatures over 80C. Then there's the added heat from the hard drive and GPU. The aluminum case acts as a partial heat radiator hence the case temperatures can get high. The MBP User Guide specifically states this and issues a warning about using the computer on one's lap.

In fact the fans in the MBP are very quiet at least mine are. Unless you are in the hardware design business with intimate knowledge of using Core Duo chips in portable computers, then your observations, although certainly your opinion, are not based on anything factual.

More likely there are a lot of people around here who think they are experts. As the remark goes, "An 'expert' derives from ex, meaning 'has been', and spert, meaning 'drip under pressure.'"
You'll read lots of opinions on these forums. Don't take for granted that everything you read is factual or truth. A lot of the opinions expressed are without any basis in fact.

  • Two questions before migrating to Revel

    Hello,
    Two questions, please:
    1. I chose Photoshop.com because it was the only service which did not reduce the photo quality of the files I uploaded. Will Revel maintain that same policy?
    2. If I move the photos, will I need to update any link of any file I shared through Photoshop embed api? (the api.photoshop.com... links I got from the "share button") or you will redirect those links to a new address on Ravel? Will Ravel allow me to embed my pics at all?
    Thanks.

    1) Revel will retain the resolution of the files when you move them.
    2) If you allow the files to be migrated, then any links previously used from photoshop.com will be redirected to Revel and should still work. If you archive the files back to your computer and then add them to Revel manually (not using the migration offer), or  if you add new files then you will need to send new links to Revel.

  • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 (Student/Teacher): Questions before purchasing

    Hi,
I'm considering purchasing Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 (Student/teacher version).  I have several questions I was hoping to get answered before I do so.  I'll list them here...
Does the Student/Teacher version have all the same capabilities and functionality as the standard version of this product?
The software is being offered as a download by a [reputable] 3rd party vendor.  Can the software be downloaded to more than one computer in my household?  (The same vendor does offer a hard-copy version for a mere $2 more, and I'm wondering if I shouldn't just buy that one to be safe.)
One of the primary tasks I need to do with my digital photos most often is resize them, in large batches.  Does Lightroom 5 have the capability to do that?
And finally, is anyone familiar with purchasing Student/Teacher software?  Is my email address with .edu extension enough to satisfy eligibility requirements?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer any or all of these questions!
    -Steve

Lightroom and Photoshop or two completely different animals in a lot of ways. It isn't a question of either/or, but rather when to use the Lightroom and when to turn to Photoshop. The differences are too great to go into a detailed explanation on a forum such as this. I use both Lightroom and Photoshop. Lightroom is my starting point for all of my work, and I do easily 90% of my work using Lightroom. But sometimes there are things that Lightroom can't do, or Photoshop just does better.
Without going into a lot of detail, Lightroom does not modify the pixels in your image file. All changes and adjustments are stored in what is called the catalog, which is really a database. When you want copies of those images to share that include all of the Lightroom adjustments you export copies for that purpose. Because of this approach to editing, there are some things that Lightroom cannot do. That's where Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or some other editor comes into play.
Looking back, it's easy to start editing using Lightroom. The thing I had a hard time getting my head around at first was the need to export copies of images to share with others, or to send to a lab, etc. As soon as you have that concept ingrained into your workflow I think Lightroom can be a very powerful tool. But it won't do everything, stitching panoramas, removing objects from images, and other such tasks are easier performed with other software. I'm not saying this to discourage you from Lightroom, but rather to encourage you to consider purchasing Lightroom with another product such as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. There is "interconnection" between the two programs built into Lightroom that makes the process of going back and forth between the two very simple.
You are probably scratching your head right now wondering what I'm talking about. I apologize. Here is a link to a good set of videos you might want to watch. Then, hopefully it will help you make a better decision.

  • TWO Questions Before Signing Up - Surface Pro 3 + license related

I currently have CS6 and tested it on my Surface Pro 3 and the UI is so TINY its nearly usable. In everything I have read it appears the issue is on Adobe's end for not supporting windows higher resolutions or the calling to scale. Is there a known fix for this I am not seeing in the community?  If I buy a license for Photoshop CC will it have the same scaling issues and micro sized user interface as CS6?
Question two is related to the license I purchase.  Can I have the program on my desktop as well as my surface with a single license?   Look forward to hearing back from someone, thanks in advance.

One license entitles to two installations – though I’m not sure anymore if that’s for non-simultaneous use or is that condition has been dropped.

  • Some questions before purchasing a Time Machine

I'm thinking about buying a Time Machine as opposed to buying an NAS Hard Drive and continuing with my wireless router (no problems with router, but the less devices the better).
Currently I have a two year old 320gb USB hard drive on which I keep my iTunes library and my rather large iPhoto library. The music and photographs are the only things of real value on my computer and I store them externally as I feel the MBP runs better with less data on the hard drive.
I have a number of questions which will influence what I do:
    1) If I connect the current hard drive to the Time Capsule, will time machine back it up?
    2) Could I use the Time Capsule as a regular wireless hard drive, and use the external hard drive (connected to the TC) as my time machine device? If this was the case, could the hard drive be used to back up the TC to which it is attached?
    3) Does 300gb in original files = 300gb on the TC or is there some form of compression?

"1) If I connect the current hard drive to the Time Capsule, will time machine back it up?"
No, the drive needs to be connected to your MAC.
"2) Could I use the Time Capsule as a regular wireless hard drive, and use the external hard drive (connected to the TC) as my time machine device? "
yes, but, it needs to be formated correctly, which I think is the Mac extended journaled format. For example, fat32 would not work. you would use the airport utility to enable a share, which can be vewied by the mac clients using time machine preferences, and you would select the additional share instead of the default one.
"If this was the case, could the hard drive be used to back up the TC to which it is attached?"
The TC can use external drives as a place to archive backups on the internal drive. But a 320 gb drive would not be best for this. Drive prices are drpping, if you want this feature, I would buy a new drive and use that.

  • Questions before purchase

I'm considering the purchase of a M750 tablet laptop.  I have a couple of questions that I can't find in the on-line specifications:
    1. What is the maximum resolution supported by the VGA port for an external monitor?
    2. Is the pen pressure sensitive?  I want to use it for sketching program so this function is critical.
    3. I'd like to run 64-bit to take advantage of more RAM.  That means Windows 7 for the OS.  Do I need a Tablet PC version?  Does Win 7 offer a 64-bit tablet PC version?  Or does the tablet mean I'm stuck at 32-bit running XP Tablet PC?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

The max resolutions for the VGA would be up to 2048x1536 @ 75 Hz refresh,it
but it would be a surprise that it doesn't since its the 4500 MHD chip from intel.
    The pen I'm not sure.
For windows 7 64 bit version, no you get
stuck with the 32 bit of Tablet XP PC.
Now my own opinion, if you care about it, would be
get a better computer, with dedicated card, and that runs
Windows 7 64-bit with 4-8 GB of ram and then buy the
Intuos 4 Tablet. It should be the same price or even less
than the M750 alone, and it would be a bigger screen.
    I recently bought a A500-ST6622 and I have an Intuos 4 small,
I'm an mechanical design engineer and I run CAD and Inventor and
the tablet it works for me. Well that's just me also I use Inkscape.

  • My questions before purchasing...

I want to purchase the new iphone 4, but I have some questions that I need answers to first so that I can make sure it's a good idea
    1. Is it still possible to have individual plans tack on an extra line with ATT for $10, basically circumventing the family rate? We don't use very many minutes, so it would be nice to save the extra $20 if we can...but it's not the end of the world if we are forced to go with the lowest family rate.
    2. Can you do email and calendar cloud syncing without using mobileme? What other options are there? (I do use google calendar, but my email is privately hosted)
    3. This is more of an opinion question that I'm curious about- do you think your iPhone has improved productivity in your personal or work life in any way? How so?

    Here are the steps:
Go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores
Tap your Apple ID at the top, then tap "View Apple ID".
Sign in.  You will see "Country/Region" there.  Change it.

  • Apple Airport newbie with some questions before purchasing - please help...

    Hello all,
Please excuse my ignorance but despite looking through the relevant online manual I wish to check a couple of things before I purchase the Aiport Express (and then possibly regret it).
I have a Windows XP laptop which connects to the internet through a wi-fi connection (access to the physical router is not available me) and I want to be able to play iTunes on my laptop through my hi-fi (wirelessly).
Am I correct in thinking the Aiport Express will do this for me? If so is any extra equipment besides the necessary hi-fi to Airport express cable required?
The Airport Express doesn't need to physically connect to the router does it? Or it doesn't need to become the router providing the wi-fi does it?
How does 'AirTunes' factor into the setup and what is better about e.g. Aiport Extreme and why would you ever need an Airport card?
I have no desire for using the Airport equipment as a router or home hub for printing etc. but just streaming iTunes to my hi-fi.
Any help/clarification would be most appreciated. Many thanks in advance,
    Daniel

djsuk43, Welcome to the discussion area!
Am I correct in thinking the Aiport Express will do this for me?
    Yes
The Airport Express doesn't need to physically connect to the router does it? Or it doesn't need to become the router providing the wi-fi does it?
    No and no.
How does 'AirTunes' factor into the setup...
It is simply the term Apple uses for streaming music via iTunes through the AirPort Express (AX).
...what is better about e.g. Aiport Extreme...
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have an audio out port therefore you can't use it to stream music.
The AEBS however does support Ethernet clients, multiple USB printer and multiple USB hard drives.
...and why would you ever need an Airport card?
If you have an older Mac without built-in wireless you would add the appropriate AirPort card to give it wireless ability.

  • Questions before purchase re:

Hey folks. I'm looking to purchase a new MP3 player now that my last one, an early Archos model, has kicked the bucket. I liked my old player, with simple "plug in the usb, drag and drop, disconnect and go" functionality (thanks largely to Rockbox), and I have an extensi've collection of from-CD ripped music that doesn't always have ID3 tags and is already meticulously organized in my preferred directory structure.
The "Zen Vision: M" looks to be what I'm looking for, but a couple quick questions:
    - Can I drag and drop files onto the player, no other software required?
    - Does the player support my chosen directory structure, including extensi've subdirectories?
    - Will I need to "hack" it with third-party firmware updates and/or software to get it to perform how I want it's
    - For that matter, how friendly is the player in general for attempt to alter the firmware? Is it difficult to access the system files, or are they just on the disc like anything else?
    - Can I power the unit with a cable for extended off-PC use, or does it only charge via USB? I don't intend to keep the cable near my PC, since with 60Gb worth of space, I don't anticipate needing to refresh the player that often.
I purchased an 80gb ipod and was disgusted with the lack of features and its patent refusal to adhere to my existing organizational scheme; hopefully Creative has a better option! Thanks in advance for your help in making m selection.

I don't know about the Vision:M but the Neeon has what you're looking for. You create the folder structure on the player in My Computer and simply drag files across. You can power it via USB or wall charger, or since you seem to know what you're doing you can make your own portable battery-powered AC adapter.
Hopefully someone with Vision:M experience can post here and help you out.

  • Questions before purchasing acrobat 9

At the moment, I'm using Acrobat 5 to scan my paper documents & then using Adobe Capture to convert the pdf into a searchable pdf file. Afterwards, I use Adobe Acrobat again to put bookmarks on the searchable pdf.
Do I still need Adobe Capture, if I purchase Acrobat 9? If I burn the file in a CD can I password protect the pdf file on the CD?
I also use Capture to reduce the size of the file, will Capture be able to handle files scanned through Acrobat 9?
Regarding Acrobat Reader, which files do I need to copy on the CD so that I can view the files directly on the CD without downloading Acrobat Reader for version 9 on my PC?
    Any ideas will be appreciated.
    [email protected]

You need to look at the options that are available in the different versions. I don't think that Std comes with OCR (paper capture). It is best to check the features (found on the order page for AA9) related to what you are used to in AA5.

Im starting a job monday that is going to require international travel (thus the reason im getting the 8830, im with Verizon)
    Questions:
    1. If i dont unlock my phone what do I gain/lose? Why should I do this?
    2. If i pop a sim in from another carrier, say vodaphone, will I get a new number, aka a euro specific number?
    3. What will be the best way to call back to the states? Id really like to use my cell phone to be able to be able to call home. Would a sim card from euro let me call home? Is prepaid the best way to go so I avoid some huge charges?
    4. Will the 8830WE work all over, Ive only seen people who goto europe but i know that Ill be traveling to every continent (spare antartica) will the phone work in all of these places?
    5. Im trying my best to stay with verizon as its been very reliable to me or should i switch to a GSM carrier.
Any advice is greatly appreciated, this will be my first blackberry and am looking forward to it!

  • T420S questions before purchase

Think i've finally decided on a T420S as the best Lenovo solution currently for me but just wanted to make sure on a few thins...
If i put in a vertex3 ssd i will get full speed out of it ?
I plan on getting a mini dock series 3 plus and want to run a 2560x1600 monitor from it, will that work ? will i be able to run any other monitors as well as this ?
Can the T420S in the above dock switch to portrait mode ?
Any likely hood of better cpu's for the T420S soon ?
    Thanks

The vertex 3 is a standard height 9mm ssd. I believe the 420s only supports non-standard height 7mm ssds. Thus, you probably cannot put a vertex 3 into the T420s. If you did manage to fix the Vertex 3 into the T420s somehow, the machine is SATA III (6Gbps) capable, so you would get full speed. However, many SATA III drives seem to have various issues with Thinkpads, so I advise you to search the forum for details. The issues range from somewhat minor, such as long hangs at startup to major issues that make the machine unusable.
According to this thread  2560x1600 video only seems to be working on a T420 with Optimus when the machine is in discrete only. It is likely that the T420S with Optimus would have the same issue. I don't know if you are considering Optimus or not.
Considering the fan & heat issues people report with the current T420s, I doubt we will see any better (quad-core) processors in the T420s, unless Intel releases low power quad cores. If you need more processing power you are better off moving up to the T/W520.
When asking for help, post your question in the forum. Remember to include your system type, model number and OS. Do not post your serial number.

  • Question before Purchasing

I'm a filmmaker and most of our work is in 720p (in Final Cut).
Can I encode (Compressor) my final QuickTime file in H264 720p/1080p (23.976) with 5.1 AND place this in iTunes "Movies" with the ability to stream to my HDTV and home theater system with Apple TV?
I'd like this feature and would totally get this if this option is supported.

720p at 24 fps is max officially supported (h264 bitrate <5Mbps)
You can have 5.1 dolby digital, but you would need a stereo audio track as well, for things to work with the latest software.
AppleTV has fairly modest hardware specs and while it will upscale video to 1080p, it cannot decode any more than 720p/24fps.
    See specs:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
Not sure if Compressor can embed stereo and 5.1 audio but I suspect it can - Winston will probably know as I think he uses it.
