Two questions: file types & navigating itunes store

i was sticking to the mp3 format for my ipod but after getting a nano for my boyfriend and loading it, i realized that i should switch to aac.
what is the quickest way to swap out my 13 gb of mp3 podcasts for acc?
i haven't been using the tunes store for very long find i am finding it very confusing. i click on a help link and end up at apple.com and have to log in there. then when i work my way back to the store, i have to log back.
my goal at this moment is to locate the interface for setting my download type. surely i can change it without having immediate plans for downloading anything.
where is it?
thanks!

I'm not sure you can, at least in iTunes, but I really wouldn't bother. The difference between AAC and MP3 isn't sufficient, in my view, for you to worry about converting a large library.
my goal at this moment is to locate the interface for setting my download type.
You're not finding it because there isn't one. You have no choice of format for any content on the iTunes Store. It's all preset by Apple or in the case of podcasts by the podcast creator.

Click here and search the article for '2 out of 3' without the quotes; in the case of forgotten answers, this generally involves either a message being sent to your rescue email address or contacting the iTunes Store staff directly.

And just in case .... You don't actually sync rental movies to the iPad....
To transfer a rented movie from iTunes, use the movies pane in iTunes. Rented movies transfer is at the top. You must have an Internet connection to transfer a rented movie. Select the "move" arrow in the direction you wish to transfer, and click the apply button at the bottom right. Rented movies can only exist on one device at a time, they do not sync like other video, but move from iTunes to the iPad.

  • Best Video File Type For iTunes and Xbox360

I have an extensive digital library and I am trying to have one file for all devices.
What I am looking to do is to have one file that can be managed by iTunes, play on my iPhone and stream to my xbox360 via Connect360 and look good. File size is not a concern. I dont want to do multiple encodes.
The important features are one file playable by iPhone and Xbox360 via Connect360 that can be managed by iTunes. I would like the video to be of very high visual / audio quality.
I use handbrake to convert video files.
My question is, what is the best file type for this scenario? I have used mv4 but more recently I am using MP4 with 264...
Again, one file to rule them all....
    Thank you in advance!

Old thread for others, but,,... It isnt necessary to convert a bunch of files, if you have Plex on your pc, and on your iphone/ipad.
I would have spent a month converting the terra bytes of all the video files that I had but i just airplay and my Plex app to send nearly any type of file on my Imac directly to my Apple tv.
It converts on the fly any file that isnt supported.

  • Two Questions (Disk Format, and iTunes Backups)

Hi all, I am switching from PC to Mac soon and plan to use a 1TB External as a backup disk with Time Machine. I have two questions however:
1.) I know when I buy my external I will need to reformat it for Mac. I managed to find from one Apple Support article that I should use a GUID Partition scheme since I will be using the new macbook pro which is intel based. HOWEVER, I am hearing different things on formats. Apple says the most common format for TM is "Mac OS Extended", but it says it also supports things like "Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive, Journaled)", and another source said it's best to use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" As you can see, this is a bit confusing for me. Which format is best for my backup disk?
2.) I also hear it's easy for backup data to collect quickly, especially if you deal with lots of large files. I really want to backup my iTunes media and library, but I have about 55+gigs of content so far. Is it still best to use Time Machine to back this up or would you recommend to manually backup my iTunes library? (like make a second partition just for my iTunes backup)
Any advice anyone has on either of these topics would be much appreciated!
    Thank you!

Ok, so I know I'm going to use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but now it says Case Sensitive is better? While I hear not case sensitive is better?
I'm a bit confused, do I need to check what the internal drive is to make this decision?
Yes, although it's almost certainly not case-sensitive.
I read somewhere that Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (not case sensitive) is best for TM.
Usually. Case-sensitive is TM's default, though.
    Does it really matter?
    It may.
I'm only going to be using this one disk to back up my one drive.
Review the pink box in #5 again.
If your internal HD is case-sensitive, your backups must be the same. There's no choice.
If it's not, and you don't anticipate using any case-sensitive volumes (a few 3rd-party apps require it), then you're probably better off with case-ignorant: +Mac OS Extended (Journaled).+

  • Change file types in iTunes

Is it possible to change the file types of music files already downloaded in iTunes (aac to mp3)

    Hi Wall!
    Welcome to the Discussions!
You have a mini-nightmare going on, but nothing that can't be sorted out.
First, if you have any iTunes Music Store purchased music in your iTunes Library, please insure that you have authorized your computer so that you can play it and can load it on the iPod to play it there. These songs show as "Protected AAC audio files" in your iTunes window under the "Kind" heading.
If you loaded/imported the CDs as AACs, they should play in that format and should load into your iPod in that format. I suspect that they won't play or load onto the iPod because iTunes can't find them on your hard drive.
If I were you, I would highlight my Library in the iTunes window, select "Show Duplicates" from the menubar, then sort the files based on "kind" by clicking on the "kind" header on the iTunes window. (If "kind" doesn't show as one of your headers, choose View Options from the menubar and check it so it does appear in the iTunes window.) After sorting by "kind", you should have your duplicate song files grouped together as AACs and MPEG Audio Files (MP3s). I would highlight all of the MP3s that were duplicated by the conversion you did and delete them, thus undoing the conversion and making things a bit simpler to work with. When You're done with this, change the option back to "Show All Songs".
Now, you're left with the AACs that are not linked with iTunes... Unless you deleted them from your drive, they're still there, but iTunes doesn't know where they are. Go to the Advanced Pane of your iTunes Preferences, click on the "General" tab, then check the boxes to "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library". Also note the location listed for your iTunes Music folder while you're there. Click "OK'" and these changes will take effect.
Now, from the iTunes menubar, find and choose "Consolidate Library", which will scour your hard drive for music files and add them to the iTunes Music Folder. Your songs should then be present in the iTunes window. Check to insure that they are, and that they play before proceeding... You may now have duplicates again: the original AACs that weren't linked, as well as the files that were added through the "consolidation" that you just did. If so, you can once again choose to show duplicates in your Library, then sort them based on Date Added, which will separate the old song titles from the new ones. Once you sort them this way, you can then highlight all the old duplicates and delete them. You should be left with a working Library. (Be careful to not mistakenly delete any "Protected AAC audio files" if you have music from the iTunes Music Store.)
There may be an easier way to do this, but I don't know of one without messing around with the files inside the iTunes folder, which I'm very hesitant to do or to recommend to someone else...
Wall, just know that the files you imported from those 600 or so CDs should be somewhere on your drive, even though iTunes has "lost" a link to them. If you keep them in your iTunes folder, you'll know where to look for and find them. The preference settings I referenced a couple of paragraphs above should help to keep them organized there.
You might want to check out the AAC loading/playing before doing any of the above. First, check/change your "General" iTunes preferences as I previously described. Then insure your "Importing" preference is set to AAC. Create a new playlist, load one of the CDs you previously imported, and drag it's icon to the new playlist to add it to the Music folder and Library. Attempt to play the songs from that playlist. They should play just fine. If you want, you can then sort the Library by "Date Added" in the iTunes window and delete the songs from the Library from the CD you just added. If this works for you, then proceed with the consolidation and cleanup as above.

  • Two curiosities:  file 'type' and Nikon window on Import

Can anyone tell me why, when I run my cursor over an image file, it shows not only the dimensions, date, camera and size but also the "File type" as Jasc After Shot Picture? I uninstalled all Jasc programs and files after getting Lightroom. Still, that 'type' shows on recent imports that had nothing to do with Jasc. Where is that coming from? Can I change it?
Second, occasionally a Nikon window opens when I hit 'Import' in LR that says the "default folder is unavailable". Where would that be coming from?
I'm curious - neither seems like a big problem but I'd like to know where they are coming from . . .

Sorry I omitted that. Desktop is Win XP SP3; laptop is Vista Home; LR 2.1. (LOVE IT!)
I've searched everywhere with no luck to find some kind of default setting - can't find any reason for those two things I know this is kind of off the wall but am hoping someone might know.
What does your image show for 'Type'?

I believe your steps were wrong.
    Follow instruction from the article:
First sign-out of any existing account on the iTunes (Itunes menu STORE, SIGN-OUT)
Go to iTunes Store, then "Apps Store" tab.
Select and buy a free App and you will get a popup window asking you to either log-in or create Apple ID. This is when you will create your ID by clicking the "create Apple ID" button.
Provide necessary information eventually will lead you to a payment method page where NONE option is available.

  • Navigating iTunes store movies in iPad

OK, I hope I am missing something, but this is driving me a bit mad.
Is it possible to navigate the iTunes Store movies and TV collection by genre, on your iPad? It is possible within iTunes on the Mac, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to do it on the iPad.
All I can do is see the top charts, or a Genius list, or Featured ... but there seems to be no way to choose to browse, for example, all movies in the Family genre.
Can anyone help? Am I just being particularly dense today?
    Kip

I know that content differs from country to country depending upon laws and restrictions of the country and the content being licensed in that country, but it seems that the button should be there if you have the Movies tab in iTunes in the music section. Typically, if content is not available, the tab will not show up at all.
Try doing a search for anything in the movies section and then cancel the search. See if the button shows up. Try quitting iTunes completely as well and then try again. This is a copy and paste that I keep handy for quick "generic" fixes. You can try these as well.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quitting iTunes - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • How to combine files like the iTunes store does?

When you buy a Movie or TV Show on iTunes you recieve two versions of it, but it appears as just one file on iTunes. I was just wondering if its possible to do that manually to your own videos that you import into iTunes.

If you purchase a HD version you also get the SD version. Is this what you are referring too?

  • Setting different default locations for different file types in iTunes ?

Point of this post is to find out if there is a way to have iTunes open tv and movie files from my time capsule and open music/music videos from my MacBook pro. I want to set up a network so any computer in the house can watch but have their own music library. Also even though I have 640 gb of space on my HD it's running out fast science I only have HD files I convert into m4v files. Is this possible or do I have to move all my iTunes to the time capsule and set that as the iTunes directory? When I had a PC it could pull up files from an external and from the laptop. Please tell me we didn't give pc's something we don't have.

  • Music File Formats from iTunes Store

Can you help me - I want to start building my collection of AIFF files as I'm about to get a Wadia 170i transport!
Can I only down load music from iTunes in ACC format? IF yes then can they then be converted to AIFF post downloading?
    Cheers Nige

An audio component of that quality obviously needs good audio formats :
In terms of buying music, you would be advised to go for iTunes Plus, which gives you the music in AAC 256kbps (near CD quality, I cannot hear the difference).
Having got that, as long as the Wadia plays them - and it looks from the website as though it does - there is absolutely no point in converting to AIFF, which as Meg says will give you NO improvement in quality, only larger files. And if you ever did contemplate converting (pointlessly) to a higher format, then Apple Lossless is the same quality as AIFF but the file sizes are only half.

  • Two questions about photos and iTunes.

If I add the album art to the songs in my album playlists, that will carry over to my iPod, correct?
AND, is there a faster way to do this than just individually adding cover art to each file?

    Andy,
select an album using the search window in your music library.
Confirm that no other songs sneaked into the narrow selection on display.
Get info for the music and paste the album art. iTunes will ask you if you want to do this to all songs, say yes, all songs should now display the same art.
Next time your sync, the album art will be displayed on your nano
