Two unrelated questions, both finder related

1) in the sidebar under "places" you can put your own bookmarks, etc. That's great. Unfortunately, I have a bunch of folders that all have the same name, but different locations, and I'd like to bookmark all of them. Is it possible to re-name the bookmark to something different than the name of the folder or file?
1 B) Is it possible to have a hierarchical structure to the bookmarks? So I can have a folder with a bunch of bookmarks in it? Currently I make folders somewhere and stick links to the things I want bookmarked, but if there was a better way...
2) now that I'm using 10.5, I use spaces. A LOT. Sometimes a window will throw up an error, or some other dialog, and everything will shift to the new window. Too often this happens when I'm in the middle of typing something, or whatever. Somecimes I don't even notice until I've hit return and made the dialog go away, or typed my password into an unsecure window or something.
Is there a way to make this stop?

O Man ‘Spaces’ is SO COOL and I missed having them. To make a long story short, my first Computer was a 1981 Tandy Coco running Microware's OS-9/6809 Level I. OS-9 was Unix Clone and a real-time, process-based, multitasking, multi-user, Operating System that used software paged memory management to access up to 64K of RAM in 8K Blocks. Well I know how you fell when that happens, so open 'System Preferences' and click on 'Universal Access'. Now click on the 'Hearing' tab and check 'Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs'. Then click the 'Flash Screen' test button to see how this works. This will 'Flash' your screen on ANY ERRORS! Now click the 'Adjust Volume...' tab and then 'Choose an alert sound' by clicking them. Picking a really annoying sound helps.
If that's not enough to rise an Eye Brow then add a 'Voice Announcement' as well. Just click 'Speech', from 'System Preferences', then the 'Text to Speech' tab. Select the 'Announce when alerts are displayed' checkbox, and then click 'Set Alert Options...' to set the 'Voice', 'Phrase' and 'Delay' options. To hear the computer announce when an application needs you to do something, select the 'Announce when an application requires your attention' checkbox.
Is there a way to make this stop?

I have two unrelated questions.
1. I can't seem to for the life of me copy playlists between devices. Both my IPod Nano and my IPhone 4s are connected to my computer right now. Using autofill, I was able to put all the music in my ITunes library on my phone, but when I sellect the playlists, copy and paste them, they won't move and remain only on the IPod and the computer. Can someone please tell me how to get them onto my phone? There are currently no playlists on the phone.
2. My other question is about mail, whenever I send a mail, the phone says that it was rejected by the server and a copy has been placed in my outbox. What's going on here?

1) Is the "Manually Manage Music and Videos" box checked under the Summary tab in iTunes on each of your devices?
2) Try deleting the account under Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then re-add it.

I have 2 Airport Extremes, and would like to use one as a repeater or alternate access point is this possible?

My dream is to use both units in the network and have a printer on one usb and a HD on the other.
It's hard to know in advance whether a printer will be compatible at the USB port on the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) so, I'm afraid that this will be one of those things that you just don't know until you try.
It's important to understand that compatible printers will do only that...print. If you have an all-in-one type of device, only the print function will work at the USB port on the AirPorts. Other features like copy, scan, fax, maintenance etc. will not be supported. You'll need to plug the device directly into a computer if you need these other services.
Connecting your downstairs AirPort Extreme (AEBS) should not be a difficult task and the setup should be straightforward. We can provide step by step if you need this or point you in the right direction if you've done this type of thing before.
We'll need to know whether the downstairs AEBS will be connecting to a simple one port modem or whether you have a gateway, which is a combination modem/router in one enclosure acting as your "modem".
I need to advise you upfront that placing another AEBS two floors up from the first is going to be an "iffy" proposition. The "extending" AEBS device needs to be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the AEBS downstairs.
IF...you have a laptop and you can receive a good, strong signal on the third floor now from the AEBS on floor one, then the upstairs AEBS will have enough signal to be able to "extend" it effectively. The "extending" device will not "boost" the signal as many users believe. It can only "extend" what it receives, so it must have a good signal to work with.
You may find that the upstairs AEBS may possibly need to be located at more of a "mid-point" between the first and third floors. Do you have flexibility for the placement of the upstairs AEBS if it will not work on the third floor?
I can help you on the configuration of the AEBS devices and provide some pointers on the printer. I'm not a PC guy, so I won't be able to provide much help on the hard drive issue.

I am in the process of expanding a database of chemistry journal articles. These materials are ideally acquired in two formats when both are available-- PDF and HTML. To oversimplify, PDFs are for the user to read, and derivatives of the HTML versions are for the computer to read. Both formats are, of course, readily recognized and indexed by Spotlight. Journal articles have two essential components with regards to a database: the topical content of the article itself, and the cited references to other scientific literature. While a PDF merely lists these references, the HTML version has, in addition, links to the cited items. Each link URL contains the digital object identifier (doi) for the item it points to. A doi is a unique string that points to one and only one object, and can be quite useful if rendered in a manner that enables indexing by Spotlight. Embedded URL's are, of course, ignored by Spotlight. As a result, HTML-formatted articles must be processed so that URL's are openly displayed as readable text before Spotlight will recognize them. Conversion to DOC format using MS Word, followed by conversion to RTF using Text Edit accomplishes this, but is quite labor intensive.
In the last few months, I have added about 3,500 articles to this collection, which means that any procedure for rendering URL's must be automated and able to process large batches of documents with minimal user oversight. This procedure needs to generate a separate file for each HTML document processed. Trials using Automator's "Get Specified Finder Items" and "Get Selected Finder Items", as well as "Ask For Finder Items" (along with "Get URLs From Web Pages") give unsatisfactory results. A one-to-one, input file to output file result can be obtained by processing one file at a time, but this requires manual selection of each item and one-at-a-time processing. What I need is a command that accepts multiple input documents, but processes them one at a time, generating a separate output for each file processed. Is there a way for Automator to do this?

With the project all done, i'm preparing for the presentation. Managed to get my hands on a HD beamer for the night (Epason TW2000) and planning to do the presentation in HD.
That of course managed to bring up some problems. I posted a thread which i'll repost here . Sorry for the repost, i normally do not intend to do this, but since this thread is actually about the same thing, i'd like to ask the same question to you. The end version is in AfterEffects, but that actually doesn't alter the question. It's about export:
"I want to export my AE project of approx 30 min containing several HD files to a Blu Ray disc. The end goal is to project the video in HD quality using the Epson EMP-TW2000 projector. This projector is HD compatible.
To project the video I need to connect the beamer to a computer capable of playing a heavy HD file (1), OR burn the project to a BRD (2) and play it using a BRplayer.
I prefer option 2, so my question is: which would be the preferred export preset?
Project specs:
                    - 1920x1080 sq pix (16:9)
                    - 25 fps
                    - my imported video files (Prem.Pro sequences) are also 25 fps and are Progressive (!)
To export to a BRD compatible format, do i not encounter a big problem: my projectfiles are 25 fps and progressive, and I believe that the only Bluray preset dispaying 1920x1080 with 25 fps requests an INTERLACED video (I viewed the presets found on this forum, this thread)... There is also a Progr. format, BUT then you need 30 fps (29,...).
So, is there one dimension that can be changed without changing the content of the video, and if yes which one (either the interlacing or the fps).
I'm not very familiar with the whole Blu-ray thing, I hope that someone can help me out."

How to compare two strings whether both are equal while ignoring the difference in special characters (example: & vs & and many others)?

I attempted to compare two strings whether they are equal or not. They should return true if both are equal.
One string is based on Taxonomy's Term (i.e. Term.Name) whereas other string is based on String object.
The problem is that both strings which seem equal return false instead of true. Both string values have different special characters though their special characters are ＆ and &

If you have a list of possible ambiguous characters the job is going to be easy and if (＆ vs &) are the only charracters in concern awesome.
You can use the below solution.
Before comparing pass the variables through a replace function to standarize the char set.
$Var = Replace($Var,"＆","&")
This is going to make sure you don't end up with ambiguous characters failing the comparison and all the char are "&" in this case.
Similar technique is used to ignore Character Cases 'a' vs. 'A'

Reset the two security questions

Hi.
I need to change the two security questions associated with my apple id. Do I need to reset the whole account using the "I forgot my password" link or can this be done separately? The only information I can find seems to relate to reseting the password, not the two questions.

- Choose Manage your account
- Choose Password and security on the left
- Answer the questions that will be prompted; get this correctly and you'll be in the page where you can change your password, the questions and your rescue email
- If this will not work for you, contact support for a reset

"Find Related Items" in Entourage (like Outlook on PC)?

Hi,
I use Outlook on a Win XP machine at work and Entourage on my Mac at home. I cannot find anywhere in Entourage where there is a command that behaves the same as the "find related items" command does in Outlook. I use this extensively on my work computer because it automatically finds any messages in my inbox and sent items which belong to the same thread and allows me to quickly select all those
messages and file them in another folder together.
There is a "Find Related Items" command in my Edit menu in Entourage but it is always greyed out. From what I can read about it, it will only find "related" items which I have manually created links to. Not very helpful in my opinion. Is there a third party script or something which gives Entourage the same functionality as Outlook?

I'm designing an authentication system. Two theoretical questions have evolved. I am not so sure about it. Hope you can help me out =)
1. First sign or first cipher?
What is best practice here? Is it a risk to a symmetrical cryptosystem, if there's also a hash of the plaintext available? Or should the cipher text be signed? I am afraid that this might cause a security risk for the hash: The ciphertext's entropy should be lower than the plaintext's, which might cause lower entropy of the hash value that makes it more likely to find possible collusions.
2. Challenge Response Authentication
This is an hypotectical one: Is it of matter, if a (one-side) Challenge Response Authentication is done reverse: Bob sends Alice f(RAND), Alice deciphers it and sends RAND back to Bob.

Two app questions

Ok all, I have two app questions.
1. Ever since the IOS 5.1 update, some streams on Tune In Radio Pro do not play in stereo and I can't find a way to fix it! I've tried turning mono audio on and off, turning AAC streams on and off, and still nothing. Could it be that my phone is complaining that it doesn't have a sim card? That's my only theory at this point. I thought it had something to do with the stream bitrate and I have been working with the TuneIn support to try and get to the bottom of this, but nothing has worked. I thought it was just the 32 kbps and 48 kbps aac streams affected, but it seems to be all on some streaming providers. Here's some of the stations I've logged mono audio on, in Spokane, KZZU and KZBD, in Saint Lewis, WARH, in DC WRQX, in New York WPLJ, in Portland Maine WHOM, in Philidelphia WBEN, and in Yakima KFFM. These are all 32 or 48 kbps streams. I can't get stereo on KQMV or KLCK in Seattle, haven't tried KLCK actually as I listen to that enough over the air, I am just basing that one on how TuneIn is acting. I can also get KFFM in stereo via Radio Pup, so in that instance, it seems to be just a TuneIn issue. WBEN is also on IHeart Radio and does not come in in stereo on either app. I didn't mention KFAT in Ankorage, AK because they are with one of the providers that doesn't seem to have a stereo aac stream on TuneIn at all. Other stations in this category dealing with two providers here, WCLI in Dayton, OH, WJDQ Meridian MS, KMGL Oklahoma City, KLMY in Long Beach WA, not listed in a market on TuneIn, KRXY in Shelton also not listed under a city, and I feel like I am forgetting a few but that's most of them. If I didn't mention it before, KQMV and KLCK have 64 kbps aac streams as well as 32 kbps aac streams, problem only occurs on 32 kbps streams there. Any solution?
2. Now this next question will go really fast. TuneIn must use some kind of audio capturing software to record, but you can only do that with TuneIn stations. Is there a way to do this with other apps, such as the hd radio that works with the Ibiquity app in the app store?

Well, here's the skinny then. If it's an isolated issue and you cannot provide a way of replicating the problem, the Apple does not consider it an OS X problem. Rather it's a problem with the third-party software. Given what you have reported I'd tend to agree with that viewpoint.
There are some third-party utilities that enable audio capture from applications that don't support it themselves. The best of them is Audio Hijack Pro 2.10.3. I highly recommend it.
If you are interested in Internet radio then you should check out Radium 2.8.3 and/or World Radio 2.0 and/or Radioshift 1.6.7. The last one will record its audio.

Two Dock Questions...

Two quick questions. First, I'm wondering if there is anyway to have certain dock preferences set for different displays. For instance...when I have my Macbook hooked up to my external display, I like the dock to always display on the left of the screen. When I am using my Macbook's screen, I like it to disappear and be at the bottom of the screen. Since my computer can detect when it is connected to the external display, it should be able to make those distinctions. Anyone know how that could work?
Second, I'm wondering how I can get the applications stack back into the dock. I accidentally removed it awhile ago and can't figure out how to get it back.

This doesn't work. I'm trying to grab the Applications folder from the finder, and when I move it to the dock, the cloud icon stays there. The dock never responds like it is going to accept a new stack. I can get any other folder to appear as a stack, but not the Applications folder. I tried with the applications link that is in the sidebar of the Finder and that is what happened. I also grabbed the Applications folder from the Home folder, and it will allow me to place it in the stack portion of the dock. However, it never operates as a stack. It just opens that folder in the finder. I right clicked on the folder in the dock and "display as stack" is checked, but it still opens as a folder.

One charge I was getting the full 30 hour battery life and the next it dropped to under ten. I tried using their tips on how to extend the battery life and I am still getting less than 0 hours of battery life. Why would it dropped more than half the amount between charges? I tried recharging it after it ran out and still the same thing. Any help?
Second, (I am adding this question because it might relate to the first in some way) my mp3 player has been behaving strangely lately. For example, some artists sometimes have letters removed or all but the first end up being removed. But, if you reset the player, the artists go back to the full name. Also, my player has been taking a little longer than usual to turn on. It takes about 30 seconds to turn on instead of the 5-0 that I'm used to. Does anyone know why this might be happening?
My Zen is only 4 months old, and I would be very upset it it's breaking already. Please, if you have any suggestions on how I can fix what's happening, post them. (Even if they?probably won't work, they're worth a try.)

< This is an unusual one; never heard of it before. All I can suggest is cleaning up and perhaps reflashing the firmware. If it still is doing this, then get the thing exchanged pronto.

How do I activate the "Find Related..." function by right clicking on a message?

I was able to right click on a message and use the "Find Related...." function to find all messages within the same subject string so I can file all related messages to the folders accordingly. After I re-install my Outlook 2010, when I right
click on a message, I can still see the "Find Related..." function, but it's shaded now (i.e. meaning that I cannot use it). How do I re-activate this function when I do the right click?

Two simple questions i cant figure out please help!

hey guys, i used soundtrack before on a 20 minute long project and i looked all over and cant figure out how to do this one simple thing! its a professional audio editing program but i cant figure out how to do a simple fade in or have a clip just fade out...i couldnt find it in the help either...it would deffidently help in my project and blend everything together nicer...im not talking about a transition between two clips but just a single clip alone having it fade in and fade out?
my other question is the audio levels. i see on the left hand side you can adjust it for each individual layer...but is there anyway to adjust the individual clips? the project i did before that was 20 minutes had like 25 layers! because all of the layers had usually one seperate clip alone in it since i couldnt make each clip in the layer have its own individual unique audio level adjustment. im sure there is a way and its probably real simple!

Maybe this will be fixed in 2.0. For now, if you right click on the clip and choose "open in editor", the clip will open as an audio file. There you'll be able to highlight an area and select "fade out" (or fade in). It will update in your multi track project.
You can do the same thing for levels. Or you can use the envelope levels, set keyframes, and adjust the gain accordingly.
I know, not an easy way to do a lot of clips.
