Two useful new features in SL

Hi,
If you also write in other languages, you'll find two new useful features in Snow Leopard. First, under System Preferences, Language & Text, Input Sources... there's a new US International PC option that allows you to use accents just as in PCs; that is, '+a=á. Second, at least in Mail and in Pages, the system recognizes the language being used as soon as you start typing and suggests corrections for that language. Before, it corrected for one language as default and you had to tell it when you later used another language. The above works for English and Spanish, hopefully it'll also work for other languages.
José

I can't even find where to switch dictionaries.
In every Apple app you can switch dictionaries via Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar. Except in Pages it is Inspector > Text > More > Language
Also in 10.6 you can play with System Prefs/Language & Text/Text/Spelling.

  • List of useful NEW features in Keynote '13

    There's a long thread on features that are missing in the update.  Some changes are quite annoying.  However I'm also noticing a lot of useful new features beyond the top-level things that get reported in news articles.  Here are some.  Please add to the list.
    Text boxes can take any shape so text flows in a specific way you want it to, such as around a curved shape — awesome special case of the next feature.
    Format > Shapes and Lines > Make Editable allows you to edit bezier points of an object. Note: inconsistent functionality — weirdly, does not work for curves or connection lines, for example.
    Vastly simpler and more beautiful way of editing Bezier points: simply hover mouse between two existing points and a new one appears for you to grab onto if you want it.
    Edit shapes with unite / intersect / subtract (under Format > Shapes and Lines).  E.g., take a bite out of an object.
    Connection lines (under Insert - > lines).  Like magnets in OmniGraffle: the end of the line attaches to another object and moves with it.  But very limited halfhearted implementation: not every object type can be connected to, you can’t designate positions on the object to connect to, nothing else in the interface even tells you whether the line is a connector or not, there’s no way to switch it on an off for a particular object, etc…
    Magic Move transitioncan match text boxes with some text changes (inserting words or letters)
    Format > Shapes and Lines > Make motion path from shape (haven’t tried this)
    Insert comments tagged with your name and optionally attached to certain objects
    Fewer floating windows (panel on right instead)
    Negative things worth noting:
    The new keynote autosaves, even when this destroys compatibility with older versions of Keynote.  So if you want to try editing an old presentation, and you might want to still use it in the old Keynote, make a copy first.
    The new Curve object (click the Shape toolbar button, and it’s in the top right) is very strange and you might want to avoid using it.  It doesn’t seem to be a “first class” object like others.  You cannot add Bezier points, and strangely, you can’t even rotate it!  Instead, add a straight line and then add a Bezier point to it.
    Cannot reapply master to selection (can only apply to entire slide)
    Bezier nodes have only a point, not the two handles, so they’re less flexible
    Old themes can fail to work correctly.  Not only if there are animations in the master, as has been reported elsewhere; one of my themes incorrectly displays paragraphs as bullets, until I manually tell it to reapply the master to the slide.

    The viewable area is centered now. So, you can stage objects off-slide to the top or left very easily.
    No more fiddling with a button to scale. Now, as with most drawing apps, pinch can zoom in and out quickly
    Right-to-left language text (like Arabic and Hebrew) builds actually WORK!
    Have an image and want to replace it with an updated version (or one that's customer specific)? You can now replace images in place quickly
    Negative thing worth noting
    No longer possible to tweak the file manually to create rounded joins on lines (or rounded butts on dashes for that matter). If you have an old file you manually updated, those still work in the latest version (I've posted a presentation here that uses lines with rounded corners instead of mitered corners to show the difference https://www.icloud.com/iw/#keynote/BAI2xMm7NsSaRKQ1wayBKy6a3BIs7ZO7W1OE/Symbols_ ME_11)

  • Filemaker Pro 11 - some useful new features

    Just upgraded from Filemaker Pro 9 to 11. There are some useful new features listed at: http://www.filemaker.com.au/products/filemaker-pro/whats-new.html
    At last I will be able to generate charts from datasets, without needing an add-on.
    I have been using the ancient DOS software Open Access (no relation to MS Access) for charting relational SQL databases since 1987. I still use Open Access within DOSBOX for OS X for some complex data processing tasks. Tips at
    http://users.tpg.com.au/aoaug/mac_vpc.html

    I am not an expert in Filemaker But I have been playing with it quite a bit recently. It sounds like you have opened some of the ports required but not all. All IWP is a webpage that is hosted (by the sounds of it) on your local machine you will need to make sure all required ports are open like port 80 for http. I would start by setting the default host on the airport using the airport utility.
    You will want to set this as the ip for the computer that has filemaker on it.
    Airport Utility > Network > Network Options
    You may also want to make sure you reserve this ip in the DHCP reservations section.
    If the IWP page works with this set up then you can work your way backwards opening the required ports ( have a look at this http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6427/~/filemaker-server-and-fi lemaker-server-advanced-port-numbers )
    I had lots of problems with IWP but installing the server add on sorted this. The advantage to this is that the server add on configures your airport to use the machine as a server.
    Dropbox, log me in, back to my mac are slightly different from what you are doing. They are apps which are open and communicating with their respective servers. When you want to host a web site or even just VNC into a mchine you have to have the ports set to forward accordingly, this is because an outside machine is attempting to initiate the contact. This is what the firewalls and security that comes with modern routers are designed to prevent.
    I hope I have helped, I can see your question is quite old.  I saw your topic whilst looking to solve a problem my own.

  • How to use new feature "New Picture"?

    SDDM 4.1.0.866 has a new feature ("New Picture"), icon to the right of "New Note" icon. Using this icon, I can insert an external image in a relational diagram, but when I go through the same motions on a logical diagram, the image does not show up. Am I not using the new feature correctly, or does it apply only to relational diagrams? Thanks.

    Hi Patrick,
    it should be possible to add image to diagrams in all models. It appears there is a problem for diagrams in logical model.
    Thanks for reporting the problem, I logged a bug.

  • Is there a place summarizing How To use new features?

    I upgraded to Lion, but now I'm searching everywhere ho to use each new feature.
    Apple's "Lion"'s page is just showing what features are new but now how to use/activate them.
    Any place where I can go to see them all explained as to how to use, implement, activate?

  • JDK re-design to use new features

    Maybe not the correct place to ask this but...
    Does anyone know whether Sun/Java are planning to do a re-design of large pieces of the JDK to utilise, for example enums and generics. It seems to me that all of the parsing classes (DateFormat, DecimalFormat etc) would benefit from generics, whilst other classes would benefit from enums (eg. Calendar class could have enum for the Day, Month etc fields).
    I've looked around for the information but cannot find anything. I assume that the answer is yes to the former but no to the latter because it could conceivably destroy backwards compatibility.

    Our plan is to retrofit existing libraries in a way
    that maximilzes compatibility with existing code.
    Secondary goal is adding as much type safety as
    possible.Retro-fitting the Calendar class with enumerated types for the date fields (days of week, month of year etc) would "potentially" break existing code. However, I think that only very badly-designed code would in fact be broken (that relied on the representation of these fields to be based around int). Reflective code, that works on hard-coded String field-name values will not break.
    For example I have an application with a Cache that caches data for multiplier X date_field (eg. 3 days or 5 weeks or 2 months, whatever). This is implemented by a properties file that holds the multiplier value and a String which is the field name in the Calendar class. Hence the code looks like...    try {
            Properties props = loadProperties();
            int mult =
                Integer.parseInt(props.getProperty("System.cache.multiplier"));
            Field field =
                Calendar.class.getField(props.getProperty("System.cache.field"));
            Calendar cacheBoundary = Calendar.getInstance();
            cacheBoundary.add(-mult, field.getValue(null));
        } catch (Exception e) {
            // whatever
        }This is independent on the type of the Calendar field as it should be.
    New libraries can be expected to take full advantage
    of new language features. No existing libraries will
    be
    deprecated on the basis of new language features
    being
    available.I take it this means that Calendar will NOT use enums.

  • Ok... so iOS5 has brought some cool (and useful) new features.... good job.  However, moving forward I would like to see even more "holding faith" with the overall philosophy of lots of devices interacting with a single data set.

    My first, and perhaps clearest, example here is iMessage.  It's great that I can take and reply to messages on my iPhone and on my iPad as if it didn't matter which device I use.  However, I spend most of my working day on my Mac, and it's a little annoying to have to use one of my other devices to send and receive messages when my most powerful device (my Mac) is right there under my finger tips.  I'm an iChat user, which has some great functionality, but of course it doesn't integrate with iMessage in anyway or Facetime for that matter, even though you can effectively do a "Facetime" call on iChat if the other person has the appropriate user account.
    So my question/suggestion is - I wonder if there's a way of bringing iChat, iMessage, Facetime etc... all into harmony so that messages, video chatting, screen sharing etc... is dealt with under a single application.  I accept you may have it so that there is more functionality on, say, your Mac (e.g. screen sharing).  But the integration would still be helpful I think.
    Any thoughts (with the hope that Apple will also see these comments/answers/suggestions and take it as food for thought on product development)?
    Incidentally, and also for Apple's benefit, please don't read this message as as meaning that I don't like what's already been done!  It's great and I think it really is moving in the right direction.  It's just that there's still room for improvement.
    Rob

    Thanks for responding Wes.  I've pasted the confusing text from that website referenced in my original post below:
    Ingest movie clips
    You can ingest entire movie clips or a selected portion of the movie clips (partial ingest). You can also transcode the selected movie clips using more than one encoding option.
         Select File > Ingest. Alternatively, press Ctrl+I (Win) or Cmd+I (Mac OS).
         Navigate to the folder containing media, and click the folder. The contents of the folder are displayed in the center panel.
    Tip: To access folders from which you previously ingested content, use the menu above the panel.
         Do the following based on your requirements:
    To view content as Thumbnails, click the Icon View button.
    To view content as a list, click the List View button.
    To quickly preview the contents of a movie clip, drag the cursor across the thumbnail. You can also click the thumbnail and use the playhead to scrub the movie. Alternatively, use the JKL keys to control playback of the selected thumbnail.
    To change the thumbnail size of movie clips in the panel, use the Zoom slide bar.

  • Instructions for new features in 5.0 don't work on Mac.

    The instructions for using new features in Firefox 5.0 do not work on Mac, which is most likely your largest user considering Mac users can't use IE. Contol-clicking on a tab does not result in a menu with "pin tab" or any similar wording. It is not possible to drag one tab icon on top of another to create tab groups. Those are the only two changes I've tried. Do these features not work on Mac? If they do, how do those of us who are intelligent enough to use the superior computer find instructions?

    Your point that the support is manned by volunteers and not the company producing the software is the problem. I have a little time right now, but I teach 15 credit hours of college writing courses during the academic term, which means I work 14 to 18 hours a day seven days a week. I do not have time to search through endless posts to seek answers to basic functionality questions. The companies that produce software should be responsible for explaining how it works, and they should do so in non-technical terms unless they want me to impose my expertise on them and demand perfect grammar on their sites. But then, corporate America is not held responsible for anything these days. Frequent, needless software updates that limit rather than enhance functionality are quickly turning me into a neo-Luddite.

  • New ACR RC released... Looking forward to seeing new features in LR

    Adobe just announced ACR 8.5 RC: Camera Raw 8.5 RC and DNG Converter 8.5 RC Now Available
    Some very useful new features are included along with the usual support for new camera models, such as the ability to modify gradients with a new brush tool and being able to display a mask overlay for gradients... Nice! Looking forward to seeing LR 5.5 (or perhaps even 6?). No news on a release candidate for LR; perhaps there won't be one as per 5.4.
    M

    I note this paragraph heading in the notes for the release's new features:
    "Camera Raw 8.5 introduces the following new features for Photoshop CC customers"
    Could this mean that although the Beta update is stated to be for both CS6 and CC that the new features (outside the camera additions) would not be implemented with a CS6 install?

  • Having mail 4.5 issues- open mail and get a new features message so I must import messages first in order to use mail 4.5.  Just recently put in MAC OSX 10.6.7.  Once it imports click done to start using mail, but end up with the rainbow wheel? Now What?

    Having mail 4.5 issues- open mail and get a new features message that says in order to use the new features, I must import existing messages into the new version first in order to use mail 4.5.  Just recently put in MAC OSX 10.6.7.  Once it imports I am to click done to start using mail, but end up with the rainbow wheel of death and it also says you cannot use mail until the import is finished? Now What?

    Is Mail still "spinning"?  If it's been doing that for a while, I'd kill it, using either Activity Monitor or the OS X application picker.  Then relaunch Mail and see what happens.
    Two "by the ways":
    1) Your system details mention an PPC iMac.  Since a non-Intel Mac can't run OS X 10.6, you seem to have another Mac.  You might want to consider updating your system details.
    2) You seem to have been misled by the poor labeling of the message composition fields on this forum into trying to enter your entire post into the "subject" field.  In the future, just enter a summary of your post there and the main text into the field below it.

  • Does using the featured news widget limit searchability?

    I am using muse to create my site, which has not yet been launched.  In order to dsplay a large amount of info in a great way, I have used the featured news widget.  Am I likely to reduce the searcability of this information having it displayed in this way?
    I already feel a little compromised as I cannot add anchors to each of the news headers, I can only link to the first page.
    The only other way I can see of displaying the information in a similar way is to create a long page with anchors at the section headers.  It look okay but nowhere near as nice as when displayed in the widget.  Will it increase my searchability by having it displayed in this way, rather than in the widget?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Clare

    Hi Clare,
    Muse generates proper HTML code for all the content that you place inside a Featured News widget (both in the trigger and target). So the content is as much searchable as any other content on the page. The content is just shown or hidden based on user interaction and not really added dynamically using JavaScript. So it should not hamper the searchability of content on your pages in that context. It should be as good as placing all the content on a long page. If you use any online services/tools to check/analyze the content searchability, you can compare the results of two versions for clarity.
    Cheers,

  • What's the best way to mix AIR 14 and the Flex 3.5 SDK and use new AIR features?

    I am returning to development of a popular desktop AIR app, after about 4 years of no code changes. Both AIR and Flex have actively moved forward during my coding absence, and it is time to play catch up.
    When last built, the app was using Flex 3.5 and AIR 2.6.
    End Goal - I want my app to look good on high density displays
    I'd like to keep Flex version at 3.5, but use the newer version of AIR, to render more clearly on high density displays (Retina on OSX and hiDPI on Win8).
    The pixel doubling performed by the "compatibility" modes of OSX.Retina or Win8.hiDPI make my app look pretty gross, and the customer base is starting to complain.
    While I may eventually switch over to the Apache Flex SDK to bring the application design into the current state, my customer base just doesn't care right now. They like the current app, but want it to work, out-of-the-box, on high density displays.
    So I need to limit my scope to changing only the AIR SDK, not the Flex SDK at this time.
    Step 1 - Overlaying AIR14 SDK on Flex 3.5
    I followed the official generic overlay instructions here, and that worked well enough. I named my hybrid SDK folder "3.5.0.AIR14". I have been able to recompile, run, and verify my app using the hybrid SDK. (my app is compiled and packaged from an ant script, using the Antennae framework. I had already switch SDKs a number of times over the initial course of development, so pointing my project to a new SDK was pretty simple enough.
    Step 2 - Updating the app.xml descriptor
    This part was also easy. I used the templates\air\descriptor-template.xml as a starting point, customizing the name, app id, and folders. Now my app descriptor is correctly based on the <application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/air/application/14.0"> namespace.
    Step 3 - Enabling Retina/hiDPI support - Help??
    I added <requestedDisplayResolution>high</requestedDisplayResolution> to the <initialWindow> tag of the app descriptor, but that made no difference. The app compiles, installs, and runs, but pixel doubling is still occurring and the app looks gross.
    I also tried setting the SWF version to 25, according to the official overlay guide. This proved to be more difficult. The official overlay guide suggests setting the -swf-version=25 compiler option, but that option is not supported by the Flex 3.5 compiler. So all I had to try was using the legacy -target-player=25 compiler option. That setting was accepted by the compiler, and it produced a SWF with byte offset 0x3 == 0x19 (25 dec), so that appears to be right.
    But -target-player=25 didn't have any effect either.
    Is setting the SWF version even required? Isn't the whole point of using the AIR 14 namespace in the app descriptor the way of telling the compiler "I want to use all features of the AIR 14 release". Why do I need to tell the compiler multiple times to use all the features of the SDK I'm compiling with? It just seems weird to me.
    Have I missed a secret setting somewhere?
    How can I tell the AIR runtime to simply run as pixel-dense as possible? When the workarounds listed below are performed, my app looks fantastic on high-density displays. But its the pixel scaling that is making everything look bad, and I desperately want to get this fixed.
    Workarounds?
    On Windows 8+, we are asking our users to enable the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" checkbox on the AIR application shortcut. This works, but is a confusing setting for average users to discover. Most just give up in frustration.
    On OSX, we can't even disable Retina mode on a per-application basis, its all or nothing, so that's even worse. SwitchResX will automatically switch resolutions based on the selected app, but that's a pretty clunky (and non-free) workaround too.
    Any other workaround ideas are appreciated too.
    Cheers,
    Doug

    It took me a while to figure out (without much help from Adobe, grrr!), since some internet writeups were terse and implied somehow that AIR's Retina support (setting your app descriptor's <initialWindow/requestedDisplayResolution> to high) would also work on Windows. They don't.
    On OSX, the steps to disable pixel-doubling are:
    update your app descriptor to AIR 14
    set initialWindow/requestedDisplayResolution = high
    compile with SWF version 25 or greater
    vector assets, including text, will scale automatically
    you'll need to replace your bitmap assets with Retina-quality bitmaps as appropriate
    when running on a Retina display, you will see stage.contentsScaleFactor=2. It will be 1 for non-Retina displays.
    On Windows, the pixel-doubling kicks in when you have a HiDPI scaling set to about 150% or greater (hiDPI scaling was introduced in Win7). There is no way to detect from within an AIR app when Windows is doing its HiDPI scaling. stage.contentsScaleFactor is always 1, under all configurations.
    The only thing you can do for AIR apps on Windows is explicitly disable display scaling (like you have done) and update your app to manually scale all UI elements at runtime (that's really gross and hard, and it what I working on right now).
    For my app, I updated our Windows installer to set the registry to disable hiDPI scaling, for all users, just for our app. Here's how you do that:
    Key = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
    Name = <fullPathToYourExe>
    Type = REG_SZ
    Value = "~ HIDPIAWARE" (without the quotes, tilde space HIDPIAWARE)
    That should be set in the full 64-bit registry, not the Wow32Node registry, even if your app is a 32-bit app (which all AIR apps are). If your installer is a 32-bit app (mine was), you may need to jump through some hoops to have it affect the 64-bit registry hive from a 32-bit process.
    If you only want to change the setting for the current user (not all users), the KEY root is HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    If you don't have an explicit installer for your AIR app (ie. if you are deploying from the web via a badge installer), then you're even more messed up, and you will need to tell your users to disable the scaling manually.
    I know, it's a total pain. I hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Doug

  • Can I use iWork '09 on Lion without using new Lion features?

    I do not wish to use the new features in Lion, primarily autosave, with iWork, at least initially.  In other words have iWork act as it would in S.L.   However, I need to purchase iWork in order to continue using a bunch of Appleworks spreadsheets.  I am using a new MBP with OS 10.7.1.  My plan is to purchase the hard copy iWork '09 from the Apple Store (the AppStore download versions have already been updated).  This CD should be some version of 9.0 as they have not put 9.1 on the CD.  My idea is to just not let the modules (Numbers, Pages, etc.) get updated until I am ready.  My question is -- will Numbers and Pages work properly on Lion without using the final update to the new Lion Features, and which updates to Numbers and Pages should I avoid?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Happily, it seems that pressing option during the shutdown process disable the beast.

    here can I get a version of Safari 5.1 that is compatible with Snow Leopard 10.6.3?
    Not possible. You need to update to v10.6.8
    Click your Apple menu > Software Update
    Or update using the this download > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
    Then restart your Mac.
