Two user accounts on one computer - syncing one library with separate apps

I have just taken the plunge and moved over to a Macbook Pro from Windows. I am really impressed with the computer, but need some help with a particular problem.
My wife has her iPhone and iPad, both of which are synced to one iTunes library on her old computer. I also have my iPod Touch, which had it's own iTunes library on another laptop. We have now replaced these old computers with one Macbook Pro.
To keep all our stuff separate I have set up two accounts on the Macbook Pro and put a copy of all our music into one public folder, so that we can share the music library between our two accounts. I logged into my account and authorised my iPod Touch, which synced with the library and also backed up my apps to the same library. When I attempted to do the same on my wife's iPad through her account iTunes synced OK, but when I tried to sync her apps it came up with a message indicating that if I tick the sync box it will delete all her apps in favour of the apps already in the library? I presume I will come across the same issue with her iPhone - I am not willing to try until I can get to the bottom of the issue.
Is there a way of using the same library, but keeping the apps in separate folders? For some reason the iTunes library has separate folders for individual users to sync video, pics, etc, but the folder for the apps is included in the music folder?
Many thanks in advance for any help!
Andy

Hi Elvis Zuo,
Thank you for the suggestion, which is the only solution I could think of.
The problem is that this then means we have two separate copies of the iTunes library on our computer. At 25GB per library this will take up lots of hard drive space. I would prefer to try and use the same library between our two accounts/iTunes installs.
Thanks
Andy

  • Can two user accounts of one computer use two different Mac ID accounts?  I'd like to keep separate accounts for movies, music etc.

I have a Mac Air running 10.8.5, with two users on it.  I'd like to keep separate Apple store accounts accounts for the two users, as we have separate music, movies, books etc.  To date, we've had separate computers, but now will share the one computer.  But when the second account is signed in and we try to sign in to the I-tunes store, or authorise the computer with the second account, the response is "the I-Tunes store is not available" or "we cannot fulfil your request at this time".  Togetherness is nice, but I'd prefer to have some privacy.

    Hi Harrike2000,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an iTunes Store connection issue in one of the user accounts on your MacBook Air, and you want to know if the issue is related to using multiple Apple IDs or user accounts.
You can use multiple user accounts and Apple IDs with one computer, see this article for more information:

For the issue connecting to the iTunes Store, try the suggestions in the article linked below.

    Troubleshoot issues on a Mac
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store, a software conflict or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking your access.
Update iTunes and Safari to the latest version.
If you have a firewall, your settings may be preventing you from connecting to the iTunes Store. Follow these steps to configure your firewall.
You may need to reset your keychain. Connection issues are occasionally caused by keychain issues. Learn how to use Keychain First Aid to resolve any issues with your keychain.
If you're receiving a specific error message, follow these steps.
If the issue still persists, contact your Internet service provider and confirm that these ports and servers are enabled over your network.

If the steps above didn't resolve your issue, be sure that your specific alert isn't listed as a possible iTunes Store error. Then, if your issue is still unresolved, follow these steps.

  • Two user accounts on one computer

How do I share the same itunes library between two users on the same computer? I checked out the how-to on this web site, but that hasn't worked? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If iTunes tells you the library file is locked, it's because it can only be used by one person at a time.
If you use Fast User switching, open iTunes, then go to the other user, you will not be able to open iTunes because the other user has it open.
Make sure to quit iTunes before the other user opens it.

  • Problems syncing photos with two user accounts on one Macbook pro in iPhoto

Hi, I hope someone can help. I've have a Macbook Pro with two user accounts, my wife and myself. My wife and I both have our own iPhones. We log onto our own accounts and sync perfectly with itunes - so far so good.
The only issue is we have a shared iphoto 'database'. When each of us go into iPhoto we're looking at the same photo library (i.e we can both see the same photos, events, etc), although we make sure we don't both go in at the same time as I've heard this can cause issues.
In iTunes if I sync photos from iPhoto to my iPhone it works fine. If I then log out and my wife logs in and tries the same she gets a permissions error. We've worked round this by deleting the photo cache folder, however if this is done on my wifes account, for example and then she logs out, when I log in I get the same permissions error until I delete the photo cache myself - and round and round we go.
Is there a way that we can setup iPhoto and/or iTunes so we can both sync with iPhoto to our own iPhomes? If its means me 'owning' the iPhoto database and my wife having some sort of read access/view only access, that would be fine.
We're using the latest version of iTunes (9.2.1) and the iPhone OS (4.0.2) and Snow Leopard (10.6.4)

Yes I moved the iphoto library to a mounted volume, as suggested in the apple support pages, and it works fine now.
I also made sure the volume was mounted at log on automatically. The only downside is that I have to make sure may wife doesn't log on and use iphoto whilst I am logged on.

  • How can I use Microsoft Office on two user accounts on one IMAc?

    Dear all,
I have installed Microsoft Office 2011 on my IMac which I have recently bought. I did this on the (at that time) only user account in place: the administrator account.
A little time after this my wife and I decided it would be much easier to us to make an additional user account on the same computer for my wife (also with administrator rights), so we could have our own settings, desktop preferences etc. So now we have two user accounts/profiles on one Imac, so far so good.
But when my wife signs in on her account, she is not able to use Microsoft Office . Office seems to be only available to the user account on which it has been installed initially: 'my' account.
Can anyone help us out here and tell us how we can make Office available to my wife's user account as well? I understand that the licence of Office is restricted to one computer, but what about two accounts on the same IMac? I mean, it is still one computer, one 'home', one family etc.
We would appreciate your help here!
    Kind regards,
    Jurjen

As long as you installed MS Office into its default location (the top level /Applications folder) it will be available to all user accounts on the Mac.
As far as licensing is concerned you only have to enter the license code once, which you should do right after installing MS Office, in the same admin account you installed it from, by opening any one of the MS Office applications.  There is no additional licensing required for additional user accounts on the same Mac.
Each user account is able to run the Office apps.  The only thing you will have to do is go through an initial setup screen in each user account (but this setup does NOT involve entering any additional license codes).
You may have problems if you installed MS Office in a particular user account (i.e. NOT in the top level /Applications folder).

  • Given two user accounts on one iMac, how can I notify myself that I have email waiting on the other account?

I have two user accounts on the same machine to monitor (different security levels). I'm in on the main account most of the time but I need to know when the other has unread emails (Yes, different email accounts and they can't see each other). I tried setting up a rule that would send a note to me (to my other email account) when a message arrives but (a) I can't get the rule to execute when the email arrives, and (b) I can't send a non-secure note (eg., "New Mail Waiting") - all I can do is forward the email. Is there any way I can do this without learning AppleScript and writing it myself? (Both user accounts using the same iCloud account)
    Thanks,
    Don

The "Rule" probably won't work when that user isn't signed in and/or being used. My suggestion is to sign into that email's account on the web service. Example if you have an icloud.com email account, go to icloud.com and go to the little gear in the lower left. Set the rule there. Rules set there should work all the time, since it's "on" all the time. Where as if the rule was set on the Mac Mail app, it has to be opened and what not.

  • How do I merge my itunes folders from two user accounts on one computer?

I've made purchases from audible.com and on itunes from two different user accounts on my home computer.  When I try to sync my itouch with my library I am missing the purchases I made from the other user account.  How can I merge these together so i can have everything at once that I have purchased?

Copy or move the song files from one account to a shared location and then drag them into the open iTunes window when logged into the other account.

  • How do I combine two user accounts into one account?

When we originally set-up our iMac, I set-up two accounts for my wife and I. Since then it has been a royal pain with music and applications sharing. How do I merge the two accounts into one?

I found an answer to this by searching on "merging two accounts" rather than "combining two accounts." BTW, it's a little mini-nightmare if you only use "combine" on both Google and Apple support. At least this post might help others avoid the same fate.

  • Two users, four iPods, one Library

I should qualify this by saying that I am a recent switcher. I have played with my Mac(s) some but I want to make sure I do this the right way.
My wife and I want to each have our own login to the computer so our settings and things stay independent of one another but we want to share a single iTunes Library.
In windows, this always trashed things pretty bad until we reached the point that the library was part of my login and she would login as me to manage her songs and sync her ipod.
Are we in the same boat on a Mac? What is the best way to go about setting this up?

I spoke too soon. I tried out the steps in the article and it did not work.
I copied the Music folder from my Home folder out to the Hard drive. I then set my iTunes preferences to change to this location. But then my library looks empty. If i then import they show up.
When i log in as my wife, I change her preferences to the same place but it is empty. I add the folder and the songs show up but when I import something as either user, it imports it to the home/music folder and not the new one and each user can't see the others music.
I may not be explaining it right and probably need to spend some more time working on it. But it looks like it wants to keep using the home folder location.

  • One of the user accounts on my computer cannot access the start up disk or its user folder.

I have two user accounts on my computer, both with administrator permissions.  One account appears to function normally; however, when I log in to the other account, the System Disk does not appear on my desktop, and does not appear in Finder either. When I ran the disk utility as the user with the problem account, I was instructed to repair the Disk by restarting in recovery mode.  Running the Disk Utility in recovery mode was unsuccesful.  I received a message saying the disk could not be repaired, and that I should back up what I could, then reformat.  I exited the utility and restarted my computer logging in under  the user that does not appear to have a problem.  I ran disk utility as this user; however, this time the utility reports that everything seems to be okay.  I log back in with the problem account and the problem stil exists.  I cannot see the system disk.

Thanks for your help.  I didn't see your tip until after I had decided to delete the user account then recreate it.  When I recreated the account, I thought I was still in trouble, because the disk did not appear on my desktop or in finder.  Then I saw your tip to check the preferences.  I changed the preferences and now I am able to see the disk in finder and on the desktop. Your tip to check Finder preferencese was something I did not know about.  I am not sure how they were changed. I don't remember ever changing them.  I guess thinking about it more, the default option may be to have the disk hidden from the desktop and finder, In the which case I was simply remembering wrong.
The only thing that puzzles me still is why when I ran Disk Utility on the one account, it indicated that the disk needed to be repaired, but that it was unable to repair the disk,  though, when I ran Disk Utility on the other account, it said everything was okay. After deleting and recreating the account, Disk Utility no longer indicates any problems.  It looks like there was something wrong, just don't know exactly what.  At anyrate, it is all fixed, and I now know about the finder and desktop view options.  Glad it wasn't something more serious. Thanks for your help.

My wife and I want to keep our iTunes separate so we have our own pics and music on our own phones. How do we sync them without combining them?

Use separate user accounts on the computer, or launch iTunes with the Shift(Windows) or Option(Mac OS X) keys held down and switch libraries as needed.
