Two users 1 itunes library

I have my itunes library on a separate hard drive in my mac pro. I have set up a user account for my wife on the mac pro and would like her too be able to use my library. I read a couple of other posts but didn't see any that dealt with the library on its own drive. Can someone help me set this up. I would like her to have all privileges.

if you're using the same library for both user accounts, you should be able to point to that by opening iTunes Preferences, the Advanced Tab, and hitting the "Change" button next to the "iTunes Media Folder Location" box. Find the folder that the media is in and it should pull up all that data in your wife's iTunes library.

There are two users of itunes on my computer with completely different styles of music and apps.  My problem is when they sync, everything goes on each others ipod, which creates a big problem.  I can not figure out how to keep the apps separate.  With the music, I check and uncheck everything, since there are hundreds of songs, It is a big pain.  Is there an easier way?

  • How to share iTunes library: two users, two iPhones, one iTunes library

My wife and I just purchased new iPhones. I would like to be able to sync music from the library on my account to her iPhone, which syncs to her account. Please advise.

You can sync multiple iPods and/or iPhones with a single iTunes library on a computer.
If your wife has her own computer login account on your Mac where she stores her account information and calendar events which is synced with the iPhone, she can sync everything but iTunes content via your iPhone sync preferences under her login account, and sync iTunes content only via her iPhone sync preferences with iTunes under your login account.
You can disable automatic syncing when the iPhone is connected - there is a preference setting for each iPhone under the Summary tab for the iPhone sync preferences, and iTunes includes a global setting to not automatically sync when an iPod or iPhone is connected.
Your wife can create an iTunes Playlist with your iTunes library and place the music she wants available on her iPhone in this Playlist. Select sync selected Playlists and then select this Playlist only to be transferred to her iPhone. She can select which video, podcasts, etc. via her iPhone sync preferences.
You can do the same with your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
If you want to share the same iTunes library with multiple computer login accounts, you can transfer your iTunes library to an external drive which iTunes under each login account will be associated with.

  • Two users for iTunes

My wife owns an iPod nano and has iTunes loaded on out laptop. We each have our own login for the laptop. I am now interested in purchasing an iPod and want to use the iTunes on the laptop but I do not want here music. Does iTunes create different accounts for us so we do not share the same music lists or is this done by having separate logins for the Windows XP. I have noticed that a couple of times I have logged in and purchased music through iTunes and it is not visible to her when she logs in. Thanks to anyone who can answer this for.

There are basically two ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library and user account.
    b) Creating multiple user accounts and having separate libraries.
    Sharing a Library
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish):
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page:
Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists

  • Two Users, One iPhoto Library?

My wife and I are both set up as separate users on my iBook because we both like various things set up a bit differently (browser bookmarks, dock items, etc). However, we would really like to share a single iPhoto (2.0.1) library. It's kind of a pain that, every time that I import our camera contents, the photos end up in my library, and every time that she imports the camera contents, the photos end up in her library, and there is no easy back and forth between the two collections.
Is it possible to set up iPhoto to import to a single library that we both have read/write access to? I've done this in iTunes (it's quite easy in that program, as you can manually set up the location of your iTunes library in the iTunes preferences), but I can't quite figure out if it's possible to do this in iPhoto.

I don't have an "ignore permissions" option
Then you're not looking in the right place.
Select the networked volume and choose "Get Info..." from the Finder's File menu. Open the Ownership & Permissions disclosure triangle and you'll see the Ignore Permissions checkbox at the bottom of the window.
Having said that (and based upon the little I've observed thus far in this thread), I would suggest you give serious consideration to Peter's suggestion - create another user that both of you will use for your photos. The early versions of iPhoto were intended to be single-user applications, and I'm confident that you will encounter some unintended consequences by trying to use iPhoto in a way it wasn't designed.

  • Two users on itunes = trouble for me

    Hi,
I use itunes no problem, my son wants his own ipod BUT he files musics sooo differently than me, he changes names, titles, etc. I don't know why...but I want to know can he have a seperate itunes software & retitle it (itunes.son) so that his way of storing music doesn't interfere with my traditional way of storing it in itunes?

It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library:

  • Two Mac's, Two iPods, one iTunes Library

I have a MacBook Pro with an extensive iTunes library that I like to call the master library. I also have an iMac that I use at home. My wife continually hounds me to update her iPod with new music and I have to do it because I keep the music library on my MacBook Pro. I'm wondering if there is a way to copy the iTunes library on the MacBook Pro to the iMac so that my wife can update her iPod whenever she likes.
One other situation could arise where she buys new music which I would like to add to the master library (hey...anything's possible) where I would want to synchronize the two libraries.
    Is any of this possible?
    Thanks

  • Two users on one library?

I want to put my iPhoto library on my Time Capsule, and I want my fiancee and I both to be able to use it. Will this create any problems? What if we both have it open at the same time?

What do you mean by 'use'?
As Larry says, iPhoto runs very slowly on a wireless connection.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and move to the other machine. There, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running on both machines for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg. Some folks have tried this on a Time Capsule with no luck.
On each machine in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
    Regards
    TD

  • Two computers, one iTune library

If I was to burn a back up cd of my iTunes library from my desktop and then install/restore that same back up cd on a different computer that has the iTunes program, will the iTunes library work on that computer?
If it does work, then would the iTunes library still work on the computer that a burned the back up cd from?
These two computers are not on a network.

    Yes.

  • Sharing two or more iTunes library

    Hello,
I have just bought an Apple TV2, but I have all my films in an external hard drive.
I have created a new iTunes Library on the external drive, and I tried to make a second shared library (my Mac and now the external hard drive). How can I see both libraries in the Apple TV, so I can have the music and all videos and films?
Is it possible to share more than one iTunes library in the same Apple account?
How can I solve my problem? Put all the iTunes stuff in the new library (external drive)?
If its the only way, how can I export the actual mac iTunes Library, to the external drive?
    Best regards
    Tiago B

You can only view one iTunes library at a time on Apple TV. So moving all your iTunes files to one library would enable you to view all your music, videos, and films.
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/easiest-move-itunes-library-external-drive/
To move your collections to another location, open iTunes “Preferences”. Use the menu “Edit – Preferences” (Windows) or “iTunes – Preferences” (Mac). You can also use the shortcut key combination: “Ctrl + Comma” (Windows) or “Command + Comma” (Mac).
Go to the “Advanced” tab and click the “Change” button for “iTunes Media folder location“. While you are at it, check the “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library” boxes.
Browse to the new location where you want to put your collection. Create a new folder if you have to.
After you click “Create“, iTunes will update the library.
Now you have assigned a new location to store your collection, but the multimedia files are still in the old location. To move them to the new location, you have to consolidate them. Go to “File – Library – Organize Library” menu (similar under both Windows and Mac).
Check the “Consolidate files” box and click “OK“. If you’ve organized your files in the iTunes Music folder before, the second box will be greyed out.
Then the waiting game will begin – iTunes will copy all the files inside the iTunes Music folder to the new location. The process could take a while depending on how large your collection is.
Now that your collection is safely stored in the external hard drive (or another location that you chose), you can delete (some of) the files at the old location to free up some space in your hard drive. You can keep your favorite songs/movies so you still can play them even without the external drive.
Another point to remember: Even though the multimedia files are in the external drive, iTunes stores the information about them in the iTunes Library file in your local hard drive. So don’t delete the iTunes Library file.
    What Will Happen Now?
With a larger empty space in your laptop’s internal hard drive, you are convinced that moving your multimedia collection out was a good idea. But you also realize that bringing an external hard drive everywhere you go is a bit impractical. The question is, what will happen if you open iTunes on your laptop while the external drive is unplugged? You will get this error message every time you want to play a file that doesn’t exist in the local hard drive. Then an exclamation mark will appear next to the item.If you still keep the items that you want to play inside the local drive, click “Locate“, browse to the location, and you can play them without any problem. If not, click “Cancel“. You don’t have to do anything because this issue will be automatically resolved the next time you plug in the hard drive. If you add new music or movies during the unplugged period, you can always consolidate those files to the external storage later.Another possible path to take is to create another iTunes library for your local multimedia files. You can do this by holding the “Alt” button when you open iTunes, You will have the option to create a new library.
Give a specific name to the library so that you can easily tell the difference between the one that points to the local files and the one that points to files stored in the external drive.
Pressing “Alt” while opening iTunes will also let you switch between iTunes Libraries easily.

  • Two Users, One Shared Library, and iPod keeps being "reset".  Help.

My wife and I share the same Mac Mini. We have separate accounts, but use the same iTunes Library, which is on a shared volume. (This is a separate hard drive where all our music is kept.)
Here's the problem: Tunes keeps asking me to reset my wife's iPod every time I log in and open iTunes. Specifically it says "this iPod is linked to another library, do you want to overwrite..." etc. Interestingly enough, this does not happen with my Nano, which is also connected to the computer.
FYI, we each have our own playlists set up; does this indicate that our library is in fact not shared? The path to the music itself is the same as per the iTunes preferences...
    Thanks!

Actually, I just figured out the answer to my own question. Apparently this is not possible with the shuffle. I don't know how to cross-post on these boards, but if anyone else is interested the relevant thread can be found by searching for:

  • Two users sharing same library AGAIN!

    Hello everybody,
we have different accounts on one i Mac and shared ONE Itunes library so far but after installation of ITunes 9, this does not work anymore. On Iphoto we worked around the problem by creating a virtual drive on which the library is located, but I´m afraid this does not work with Itunes. Any Ideas?

I checked the Aperture license agreement and the word "library" is not mentioned in the agreement so that shouldn't be the problem. Have you called Apple Technical Support to discuss? Have you provided feedback to Apple as this would seem to be a bug, not an intentional limitation? http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
Just a shot in the dark but I wonder if you will have success if you both use an identical /home/library/preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist file. The database changed in Aperture 3 from Aperture 2 and it may be that the database is now storing more information about the system than before. Sorry I can't debug as I only have one Aperture licence serial number.

  • Two users on iTunes without syncing each others information

Does anyone know if there is a way to sync TWO iPhone's to iTunes on the same computer without losing any of one user's information? My husband has his phone synced to the computer and when I tried to sync my phone, it deleted all of my information from the phone..contacts, apps, etc and put all of his contacts on my phone. Is there a way to sync two phones to one computer?

    Welcome to the discussions,
you could create a second user in windows, each user has a separate iTunes after logging in.

  • Two accounts, one iTunes library

    I've got a B&W G3 with a gig of ram and a big drive. OS 10.2.8 installed.
I've set up two separate admin accounts for me and my wife, and got a bunch of music stored in the music folder on my account. Is there any way to set it up so that she can access the same music from within her account?
    Thanks

This is the iTunes for Mac forum.
You should be in iTunes for Windows.
Don't install iTunes for each iPod, It only needs to be installed once on the computer.
If you wan to use completely different libraries/music, create separate XP user accounts.
