Two users in the same Mac accessing one TimeCapsule

Hi,
How can i make two user accounts in the same Mac access simultaneously the same TimeCapsule?
I've tried setting them to use accounts to connect to TimeCapsule as well as using a single password for TimeCapsule.
But i keep having the same problem. When one user accesses the time capsule the other gets ejected or the TimeCapsule folder appears with a forbidden sign.
What do i have to do?
Please help.
Thanks in advance

I think i understand what is happening.
Leopard mounts the TimeCapsule disk using mount_afp command and any disk mounted with mount_afp will automatically have as owner <user>:staff and read and write permissions only to the owner. All other users have access denied.
(If anyone knows how to change the default permissions of mount_afp please reply!)
If like me, you have two user accounts in the same Mac (lets say user1 and user2) and use fast user switching a lot like i do, since it is a family computer, you'll have serious problems since what happens is the following:
1. Mount the Timecapsule in user1.
2. Fast user switching to user2.
3. The TimeCapsule will appear unmounted in user2
4. Mount the TimeCapsule in user2.
5. List the /Volumes folder and you'll see something like this
drwx------ user1:staff /TimeCapsule
drwx------ user2:staff /TimeCapsule-1
No problem... I can live with having two mounts for the same network disk.
The problem is the following...
6. Fast user switch to user1 again.
7. Open a finder window
8. On the left the TimeCapsule is listed as a network drive (as expected) and is shows as mounted!
However... The association has changed and once i click the TimeCapsule icon in the sidebar it now points to /Volumes/TimeCapsule-1 and therefore user1 has permission denied.
9. I opened a terminal window with user1 and went to /Volumes/TimeCapsule and everything was ok!.
So the conclusion is... the finder window sidebar TimeCapsule is pointing to a Volume it shouldn't be...
How is it possible to correct this situation???
Please help! I just want a way to have two users on the same machine using the same time capsule at the same time.
Thanks!

  • Share a library between two users on the same mac?

It is possible to share a library between two users on the same mac?

It's doable. As it's been pointed out Aperture has no provisions for file locking so you can't have two users accessing the library at the same time. This includes having one user having the library open only for browsing. Aperture doesn't have a +Read Only+ mode, when it opens the library, even if you make no changes to any images, the library will be written to.
This also means you can't have one user open the library and then stop using Aperture but still have the library open and then have another copy of Aperture open on the library.
Of course if you have two copies of Aperture running even they are on different libraries you'll be in violation of the license and you'll have bigger problems to worry about then a toasted library.

  • Two users (on the same Mac) using same RAID simultaneously?

O.K. I know you should never never ever connect two different Macs to the same RAID unless using Xsan. . .
How about connecting two users on the same Mac simultaneously?
In other words, can I have one user manipulating data on the RAID in the background while reading the data using a second user (on the same Mac)?
    Thanks,
    Ed

That depends on the application in question.
Since all the data requests are coming from the same Mac, you don't have the issues you would have if you had two different machines talking at the same time.
However, it now depends on whether the application(s) you're using supports file locks.
As long as the application that's manipulating the data properly locks the part of the file it's working on, and that the application you're using to read the file reads the locks and knows whether or not it's OK to use that part of the file, you should be OK.

  • Can two users on the same Mac sync contacts by using the same Apple ID in the iCloud settings?

Can two users on the same Mac sync contacts by using the same Apple ID in the iCloud settings?

    Hi Barney,
That's exactly what I want. I have a personal user and a business user on my MacBook Pro. I want both users to have the same contacts so if I add a contact while I'm logged into my personal user, it will show up when I'm logged into my business user. I want both contacts books to be exactly the same; like you said. So, I used my business user AppleID when I enabled iCloud for my personal user and I enabled iCloud for my business user with that Apple ID as well. For my personal user, I selected Contacts and Calendars to sync with iCloud. For my business user, I selected everything to sync with iCloud. The problem is... it didn't change anything. I restarted my computer to see if that would do anything but nothing happened. I'm not super savvy with Apple products, so maybe I'm completely confused.
    Hi Xeni,
Thank you for your response, as well.

  • How can I share a folder between two users on the same mac?

    Hi all,
I would like to share a folder between multiple users on the same macbook without having to transfer the folder to the Public/Shared folder.
Is there not a way, using the the folders shared permissions, to allow shared folders from one user to be visible and usable by another user on the same mac without having to move the folder to a designated shared location?

Thanks, but do you have to do that every time you share a folder?
No, you just need to do it once and that's it. Anything that is in the Shared folder is accessible by all user accounts within the same Mac.

I've read numerous 'how to share a folder' blogs and they just say it's as simple as clicking 'share' and allowing specific users to access it...none have mentioned this (not saying your advice is wrong at all, just don't get why no-one else has mentioned what appears to be a key step!)
Can you give me an example of such a blog. I suspect you may have mis-understood what they were saying but if you can provide a link, I'll look at it.

  • Two users on the same Mac - jointly manage iTunes library

    Well,
Myself and my wife share the same Mac at home. I would like to have the same music library on both accounts that either of us can administor. I know I can just turn on file sharing but that can be slow to load if there is a large library, it means both accounts having to be logged in and and one of the account will just have listening priviliges. I do not want to duplicate the librarys which i know is one way around it. So is there any easy way to do this?...Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated.
I do hope you understand the question...
    Thanks

I there, the same here. this is the way I did.
I put all the library under the shared folder, say Music. Then for every month like October 2006 I have created a folder and we keep adding music. Our iTunes points both to shared/music.
Both work on the same library / month. Once a while, one of us re-import only the latest month and will have the latest changes. Once the month is over, we create a new dir Nov 2006 and start working on that. The other months are backup and ready. Any refresh would be only the latest month. For privileges settings, have a applescript that applies automatically rights to any file in a month-music folder (does not matter who adds the file).
Hope this help. iTunes needs two features badly (like iPhoto):
    1) a mechanism that automatically detect new files in the library
    2) a mechanism that automatically detects changes in metadata and synch
Strange they have it between iTunes and iPod, they should have it between iTunes and Finder

  • Can two users share the same mac desktop with two different iTunes accounts

I have a mac desktop, my husband and I share the mailbox for our emails but he has his itunes account on the computer. I have mine on an old mac laptop wHich is not working well any longer. Can I create a second Itunes on the desktop so we could both use the same computer yet keep our music separate

    You can.
Your home account can have its own hard drive.
iTunes Media Library can be shared. Or not.
Even have your own boot drive if needed and you have different applications and configuration.
The Mac Pro and OS X are designed for multiple users. Not being limited to just one (or two, now that SSDs have found their way into iMac and laptops) has allowed more people to off load their media and data from the boot drive, which is always good.

  • I have two users on the same MAC and want to have separate ITunes libraries stored on my time capsule.  what's the best way to ensure that is done?

I have 2 users on a MAC each with separate accounts (email, photo, ITunes) and I want to migrate my ITUnes Library over to a time capsule so that each usewr still has their own library bu don't want to duplicate songs.  What is the best way to have both Itunes pointed to separate libraries both stored on the Time Capsule?

A bit of basics on iTunes.  iTunes does 99% of what you see through a library.itl file in the iTunes folder.  This file is a database and in it are references to the actual media files.  These files can be anywhere in theory, but if you have iTunes set to default then they are nicely organized in media folders in the iTunes folder.  You have probably moved them to some central shared location in the past, then built up two individual libraries around that central location.
iTunes is very fussy about a person dragging files to a different location, and that goes double if the other location is on a different drive.  You can move files, but it is best to let iTunes do it so it can keep track.  If this was just for one person I'd say go into preferences, select the other drive for media location, then close preferences. My understanding (never done this before) is iTunes will then ask you if you want to move your media.  Say yes and iTunes will move it and keep track of it -- for your library.  Now when you go to the other person's library, it opens and you see loads of ! because their library is still looking for the media on the same  drive as the library is located on.  I don't think it will work (but you could always try) to re-assign the media location to the external drive because the reference in the database is to look for such-and-such a file on the internal drive.  iTunes did that for the first library as part of the move, but not for the second one.  Note that typically when you want to move a single user's collection from drive to drive we advise moving the whole iTunes folder, library files and all, to another drive, but you don't have that structure.
So I'm not sure what to advise.  If it were me and I was absolutely gung-ho on doing this I would re-assign the media with one library.  Then edit the .xml version of the library file for the second library so it points to the new file locations and import this into a fresh iTunes library for the second user.  This isn't the perfect solution because nominally the .xml version does not 1005 replicate all the characteristics of the original .itl file (which cannot be edited).
Or maybe some other user bas a better idea.

Then hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared/ folder.

  • Sharing iTunes library between two users on the same Mac

I recently bought my parents a new MacBook Pro (they switched from Windows). I was able to get all of their songs over and into my dad's iTunes library. My mom and dad each have separate accounts on the MBP, but they'd both like to be able to see (and listen to) the same iTunes library, not at the same time, obviously.
Is that possible? If so how? Is it enough to point my mom's iTunes to the same folder? Do I need to put special permissions on that iTunes folder while logged into my dad's account?

the easy way is to use itunes sharing. start itunes in your dad's account and enable sharing in itunes preferences->sharing. then other users including your mother will be able to listen to the songs from your dad's itunes library but ONLY while your dad is logged in. so in order for this to work both of them should be logged in at the same time. to make that possible enable fast user switching in system preferences->accounts->login options. However, this is not terribly convenient.
it's possibly (but surprisingly tricky) to use the same itunes library without having both users logged in at the same time.
Is it enough to point my mom's iTunes to the same folder? Do I need to put special permissions on that iTunes folder while logged into my dad's account?
yes. not just permissions. you need to put inherited ACLs on your dads Music folder to give both of them read+write access to all current and future files in it. so log in as your dad and run the following terminal command (copy and paste please)
    chmod -R +a "username allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" ~/Music
instead of username put the short user name of your dad's account. it's the same as the name of his home directory in /Users. then repeat the command with your mother's username instead of your dad's. after that log out of your dad's account, log into your mom's account and point her itunes library to his itunes library. to do that start itunes while holding option.

  • How can I sync the same iTunes 11 library between 2 users on the same Mac?

With iTunes 10 I was able to have one main iTunes library under one user and have a second user (on the same Mac) access it by putting an alias of the iTunes Libray.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml files in the second user's iTunes folder.  This ensured that the library remained synced regardless of which user added or made changes to it.  With iTunes 11, I am no longer able to do this.  If I try I get the following error pop up:  'The iTunes application could not be opened.  An unknown error occured (13014)'.  If I delete the aliases in the second user's account the error message goes away but nothing shows up in the main iTunes window.
I've been able to at least access the iTunes library (which is stored on an external drive) with the second user by changing the iTunes media folder location in advanced preferences to the main iTunes library and then selecting file/add to library and selecting the iTunes media file which (eventually) pulls up all the song/movie/apps etc. information.  However, the 2 libraries do not remain synced (i.e. a change in one does not show up in the other).
Anyone know of a way to get one library to remain synced between 2 user accounts on the same machine with iTunes 11 or am I going to be forced to delete and recreate the second user's iTunes info frequently to 'catch up' with the original?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm surprised the alias method worked, and it certainly isn't the prescribed method.

  • How do I move organized photos from dropbox to iPhoto and share with another user on the same mac?

I have about 3,500 photos sitting in dropbox and just purchased my first mac yesterday.  My husband and I each have our own Ipad and our own user id's on the mac.  I moved two of the folders to Iphoto and it shows up on my screen in the right folders.  However, on my Ipad, it shows all of them under one Photostream and not organized.  They don't show up on my husband's "side of the computer" at all.
    So my questions are:
    1.  How does one mirror their file organization on the Ipad?
    2.  How does one share all of the folders with another user on the same Ipad so they can view folders, and add pictures to the folders if they like?
    Thanks!

    1.  How does one mirror their file organization on the Ipad?
If you use the Photo Stream, the organisation in iPhoto will be lost - there is just one endless stream.  YOu could sync your photos using iTunes. Then you will see the synced albums in the Photos.app on the iPad.
See this link:   iOS and iPod: Syncing photos using iTunes
How does one share all of the folders with another user on the same Ipad so they can view folders, and add pictures to the folders if they like?
On the same iPad?  Do you mean on the same mac?
If you want to share an iPhoto library between two users on the same mac, the iPhoto library should be on a separate disk partition or even better, on a separate external disk. Then you can set the flag "Ignore ownership on this volume" to avoid permission problems. Both of you will be able to browse the iPhoto library and can edit the photos within.
See this support document:  iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
If both of you want to keep separate iPhoto libraries but share the photos, you could share selected albums as Shared PhotoStreams and invite each other to browse them. This would require iOS 7. Do you have iOS 7 on your iPad?  Each Shared Photo Stream will be shown as a separate album on your iPad .
