Two Users, One Library?

My wife and I share a computer, and to make it easier for email and such I've created a login for her and one for myself. I moved the iTunes music folder to the Users/Shared directory so we both can share it from either login. But, is there any way to auto update each of our libraries when one of use imports new music. So if I import or buy a new album on my login, I want the new music to also show up in my wife's login.

  • Two users, one library - how to share Mobile Me Galleries...how?

I have managed to get 2 users (both as admin) sharing my Aperture Library, which is great. But, given that we both have different MM accounts, the MM Galleries created by one user dont appear in the other users' Aperture. Any ideas on how to get not just Aperture libraries shared between 2 users, but the MM galleries as well?

I think the following will work, but it's a bit of a kludge:
1)User "Able": prior to publishing the MM Gallery, make an album with an appropriate name (example: "Portfolio1")and gather all of the images into the album, them publish as a MM Gallery. Quit Aperture.
) User "Baker": Open Aperture, select album Portfolio1 and publish as a MM Gallery.

I have set up two users, one for myself and one for children.  The computer automatically logs in for the children with no password required.  When the children go to spotlight and type in a search criteria all of my files show and open up.  How do I prevent this?

Log in to your account, and move all your files to your home folder. No other users should be able to access them there and they won't show up with a Spotlight search.
Make sure your kids' account(s) do not have admin privileges.

Try connecting the iPad to the computer that you do not want to WiFi sync with and uncheck the WiFi sync option in iTunes. Then click on Apply. Reboot the iPad and see if that does the trick.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

I have two users one is mine, one is a test i set up with apple care. Everything was working fine then i lost my applications folder icon on my user. I have been using the Finder to open applications, now when i open my user the mouse travels but i'm not able to get a respond from anything ,it's almost like its frozen. I have power off and restart and use the test user. Anyone have a clue or any ideas?

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
       1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
       2. Press the power button.
       3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
       4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
    Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • One Mac, Two Users, One shared Aperture Library

    Hello
I recently bought a new DSLR camera. As the camera is much more advanced comapred to my former one I also wanted to improve my editing capabilties by switching from iPhoto to Aperture.
I (USER 1) started Aperture, created a new library in the same directory my iPhoto library is stored in, chose "Import -> iPhoto library -> keep files in the original location"...a couple of hours later the library was indexed and usable.
Now I wanted to take the next step. To optimize disk storage and to avoid duplicates the iPhoto library was used by two users, the imports, edits... one user made were available to the other user (on the same Mac) and vice versa. The idea was to do the same under Aperture. So USER 1 assigned "read & write" rights on my library file to USER 2 as well (as I said, file is stored in the same location as the iPhoto library where 2 users, 1 library already worked). I signed in as USER 2, started Aperture and first had to create a new library file. Then I changed the library file to USER 1's (shared) library. This worked in prnciple, however "Projects", "Faces"... were not displayed. Aperture showed as many blank fields as USER 1's library contains pictures. Some pictures were displayed after a couple of minutes but the system didn't appear as if it would also try to make the remaining pictures available. So I checked access rights on the library file again (USER 2 had all rights required), closed Aperture on USER 2, reopened Aperture under USER 2 and got the message, that access rights are not sufficient to access the library file of USER 1.
What am I doing wrong? Could it be that what is possible under iPhoto (2 users, 1 Mac, 1 shared library file) is not possible under Aperture?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Update:
I installed Windows via Bootcamp, added a second partition to the system. It worked, Windows took ages to download all the required updates but anyway, it worked. So I started up again with OS X Lion, now splitting my OS X partition into two (than had 2 OS X and 1 Windows partition) and adding all my iTunes content to the second. Then I created a new Apperture libary on that second partition, imported all the projects into it and, hey, it worked as well, no files showed "unsupported file format" anymore. So I thought I was through it all...but only until I tried to start from the Windows partition again, it didn't work. Under OS X I could see the Windows partition and all it's content, however the Bootmanager didn't provide the option to startup with Windows. So I had to clean the second OS X partition again, deleting the Bootcamp partition and then doing all the painfull Windows installation again. Now I'm at the point where I have 1 Mac OS X Lion partiton and a Bootcamp partition containing Windows 7...
Now my question: Could it be, that Bootcamp 4 under OS X lion can not run Windows on another partition than the second one? In other words: If I now split my OS X partition into two to have all the iTunes and Apperture content on this second partition, will the third partition (Bootcamp) again not work anylonger? The Bootcamp help is not very precise in this point, it only talks about the installation process of Windows 7 that is only running when there is only one OS X partition, it does not at all say that - after installing Windows on the Bootcamp partition - the OS X partition must not be changed to prevent Windows from "dying". Does anyone out there have any experience on this, what will happen if I now split my OS X partiton into two with the second partition only containing iTunes and Apperture content and "ignore ownership" enabled? WIll Windows die again or did I do something wrong with my first try?
Thanks for your help in advance.

  • One Computer, Two Users, Shared Library?

I have searched around and haven't been able to find a direct answer to this...
My wife and I have different user profiles. I use aperture for all our photo management. She just wants to have access to the library to make slideshows and DVD's (from her user profile).
Can we set it up so that both users can have access to one, central, aperture library?
    If so, how?
    If no, why?
    Thanks for any help.

    WE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.
ONE IMAC TWO USER ACCOUNTS WELL 4 IF YOU COUNT THE KIDS. THAT'S WHY WE NEED TO LIMIT ACCESS.
I'VE BEEN USING APERTURE UNDER MY USER PROFILE. I THEN SET UP APERTURE IN MY WIFES DOCK. SEEMED TO WORK AT FIRST, THEN PREVIEWS WOULD NOT OPEN GRAYED AND RED ? MARKS. THEN IT STARTED TO OPEN PREVIEWS AT A SNAILS PACE. WHEN I WENT BACK TO MY USER ACCOUNT THE FOLDERS AND PROJECTS HAD ALL BEEN CHANGED.
WE WANT THE LIBRARY TO BE THE SAME FOR BOTH OF US, SO WE CAN BOTH WORK ON IT A DIFFERENT TIMES FROM OUR OWN USER ACCOUNT. ONE COMPUTER ONE LIBRARY ONE USER AT ONE TIME. I DON'T WANT TO HAVE ANOTHER HARD DISK AT THIS TIME. WE HAVE A 500GIG AND THAT'S BIG ENOUGH TO DO WHAT WE WANT .
I THOUGHT OF SETTING UP AN ADDITIONAL USER CALLED APERTURE4 BUT THAT'S NOT HOW WE WANT TO USE OUR PHOTO'S. I THINK IPHOTO WAS ACTUALY WORKING BETTER. WE ARE USING VERSION 1.5.2
I GUESS THE OTHER BIG QUESTION IS HOW SHOULD WE SET THIS UP. WE ALREADY HAVE OVER 1100 PHOTOS AND IT'S BEEN ONE WEEK
    THANKS , MARK

  • Two users, one AppleTV. Please help.

I'm thinking about getting an AppleTV for THE device to play back our media. So this would mean our movies, music and maybe occasionally pictures. There are two users in my household: me and my wife. We have one computer, A MacBook Pro (although the wife might get a laptop of her own sometime in the future). I also have a Mac Mini that I have been planning to turn in to a server.
Now, both me and my wife have our own iTunes-libraries on the MBP. How could we make that content available to the AppleTV? There are few options:
    a) We stream the content from the laptop. Easy solution, but I do not want this. I want to be able to access the content all the time, even if the laptop is sleeping. Also, I would like to move the iTunes-library off the laptop in order to save HD-space.
    b) We sync the content from the laptop. Easy, but the problem is that only one user can sync. So if I synced my content to AppleTV, my wife could not sync her content, so we are back at option A, which is not suitable.
    c) We combine the two libraries in to one, copy them to the server that runs iTunes, and we stream the content from there to the laptop and to the AppleTV (or we could sync it to the AppleTV as well). The library could be split in to playlists that would list each users songs for example, so my wifes Harry Belafonte-songs don't get mixed up with my Manowar-songs . Now, this sounds like the best solution. But how could I or my wife add content? The laptop would be used to buy music from iTunes, as well as ripping CD and DVD's, and that content needs to be added to the iTunes-library that is running on the server. How to do that?
    d) We combine the iTunes-libraries in to one (with playlists separating the songs according to the user) and put it on a network-volume on the server. Now, this seems like a good solution as well, but... If my wife ever gets a computer of her own (instead of we using one shared computer), what would happen if she decided to access that content on her computer while I was accessing it on mine? Of course I could just wirelessly share the library with her computer, but then she couldn't add her purchased songs to the common library, and they therefore wouldn't be playable on the AppleTV.
I don't think my situation is that uncommon, so I would be interested in knowing how to solve it.

This actually seems like a viable solution. If my wife buys or rips some music, I don't have urgent need to listen to it, and if I do, I can always import the songs to my library. And I'm quite certain that my wife is not interested in my content, but if she is, I could always teach her how to import my content to her library.
One loose end that remains is that how we will get that various content to the AppleTV. Of course, I could manually sync the content to it. But if my wife buys content, how could she make it available to AppleTV? While streaming would work, I don't like the idea of AppleTV being dependant on the laptop in order to work properly. What would happen is that she buys content, I then add that content to my iTunes-library from where I then sync it to AppleTV. Or she streams her library to AppleTV, but she couldn't access that content if the laptop was sleeping.
I asked this same question in another Mac-forum and I received a suggestion where the server would stream the content. Adding purchased content to the server-iTunes would be handled by a Folder Action that would automatically import any added file to that folder to the iTunes-library. So if my wife bought a song, she would then copy that song to certain network-folder, where it would be automatically imported to the server-iTunes for streaming. And same thing would happen in my case. We could still have separate libraries for each user, for iPod-syncing and so forth. So it would basically be a three-way iTunes-setup, with three different iTunes's (mine, wifes and the server-iTunes) using same folder and files, but each having separate libraries. My wife's library would contain just her content, my library would contain just my content, and the server-iTunes would contain all content that would then be streamed to AppleTV.
Does any of this make any sense :)?

  • Two users, one computer, can we share?

Hello and thanks for any help. We got a new computer for Christmas that has two user "accounts" on it. My husband loaded iTunes into "his" side with no problem. I have iTunes, but can't get any of the music to show up on it, even though the computer shows that the files are being shared between the two users. I can add music to it with no issue, but can't access what was already in the library. It seems silly to load all the music in twice, but I will if I have no other option. Any ideas? Thanks.

    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Drag your entire iTunes folder from /My Documents/My Music/ to a Shared directory.
    3 Log out.
1 Log in on your other account(s).
2 Start iTunes and immediately press an hold the Shift key.
3 iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library.
4 Select the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder in /Users/Shared.
5 Now go to File -> Add Folder to library and select the iTunes music folder located in /My Documents/My Music/iTunes.
6 - iTunes will add all the music in from this account to the main iTunes music folder/library.
    7 Delete the iTunes folder in /My Documents/My Music/.
8 Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Shift). Everything should be there.
9 Quit iTunes and log out of the account.
10 Do the above steps for all users. Don't do the first 1-3 steps. Start at the second series.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should be there.
Whenever any of you do anything in iTunes, it will be seen by all since you are using one and the same iTunes library file.
Create a "main" playlist for each user with their own music. Create a smart playlist and set it to Playlist is not the playlist you created above. Select this and it will show you everything NOT in your playlist. Do the same for the others. This will help when adding only the music you want your own playlist.
Note that iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time.

  • Two ipods, one library

How do i load songs from my ipod into the library..The ipod has songs from another computer...i like them and i already have songs on my itunes library....i want to keep both if possible but the ones on the ipod for sure...i just want to add the songs from one ipod to the library so that i can add them to my other ipod

    Hello mateo09,
There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Have a look at the article linked below. Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries. Method two is to set your preferences so each iPod is updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look anyway and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just a point on posting, you should create a new thread when you are asking a question as you'll a) probably get it answered quicker and b) it avoids causing confusion when someone is trying to get the answer to a situation unrelated to yours.

  • How do I create separate playlists for two ipods/one library and them sync them?

I have an older classic ipod, my daughter has an older nano.  I got new laptop and have managed to sync my ipod and ipad with success, as well as move my library from old pc to new laptop.  Now I am trying to update and sync my daughter's ipod.  It says that it is synced but nothing changes.  I believe I had set up two different libraries on the old pc, and so certain cds had been copied into her library.  I can't find them in the earlier mentioned transfered library.  That's not a big deal, as I can just use those cds to add them back in later (more work though).  I've read older community posts on my issue, but any article links on how-to are too old, I guess.  I like the idea of using just one library and creating playlists for each ipod to sync to, but cannot figure out how to do this.  Also, do I need to restore my daughter's ipod to get the ball rolling?  She's taken a couple of videos she likes and I'm not sure I want to lose it in the restore.  Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Hey puckaluck8,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article provides different methods for managing multiple devices with one computer:

You mentioned syncing separate playlists, which is definitely a good method. The other option you may want to consider is called "Manually Syncing", which you can read about here:

  • Two ID's, Two iPhones, One Library - Can they share Match?

My wife and I have different ID's on our iPhones, but share the same music library.  Can we use the same iTunes match account with both iPhones while still maintaining separate ID's?
I would even be willing to pay for two accounts, if I had to, but that doesn't seem like that's an option, either, with one library.
We are all figuring this out as we go, if anyone is trying to do what I'm doing, please let me know what solutions you have come up with.
    Thank you,
    Kevin

I can only assume based on what you have said in your post that you and your wife have seperate iCloud accounts but use the same iTunes ID for purchases.  If this is the case, then yes you can use iTunes Match for both phones based on the one library.  Clarify some of the details and I can hopefully help you further, especially the details of phone accounts.  Do you share the same iTunes Apple ID for making purchases (music, apps, etc.) and have separate iCloud accounts?
    I hope this helps.

  • One Macbook, two users, one email account

Is there anyway for two users who share use of a single macbook (two user accounts) to share a single email account using mail?
Conceptually, I imagine that this could be achieved by locating the mailboxes/folders in the public folder accessible by both users.
How do I change the settings within Mail to "point" to this folder?

Just some more notes for setting up the same mailaddress on two accounts:
    1. If you use POP3 leave messages on the server - otherwise emails received by account A won't appear in account B. On the other hand, leaving mail on server may lead to overquota. If both accounts check on a regular basis, leave them on the server for e.g. 7 days.
    2. I would prefer using IMAP, if supported by your mail provider. That way all folders and mails are stored serverside, and the displayed content will be the same for both accounts.
