Two Vaults - different sizes

I am puzzled by my vault sizes - I am a backup freak and use a second vault on an external drive (Apple format) for a backup of my primary vault. I updated my vaults yesterday but noticed the size and "date modified" are different yet I can't seem to update the vault on the external drive. If I select the vault on the external drive and click "update vault" I get a popup which says "your vaults are already up to date." If I check the Get Info on the two vaults after the update, both the size and "date modified" are different which concerns me since I use the external drive for backup of both the original Raw files (folders) and the vault. Obviously I can delete the vault on the external drive then recreate it but this seems to defeat the purpose of a simple backup. What am I doing wrong?

Hi kazjaz,
The 931.5 GB means the available space on your hard drive.   Since the figure is the same for both vaults, that seems odd to me.
I would suggest creating a new vault on the external hard drive and deleting these.
If you are using Time Machine, the original libraries, if they are on your internal drive, will be backed up as well.
Page 399 of the Aperture User Guide may give you a better understanding of this important process:

I hope this information helps!

• Aperture library restored from vault different size to original?

Hi, I tried to share an Aperture library between two user accounts and it's messed up the permissions such that I can't use it in either account.
Shortly before trying to do this I updated the Aperture vault I keep on an external USB drive.
I've been unable to restore the permissions on the original library so I put it in another folder and asked Aperture to restore from my up to date vault.
After some time Aperture restored it's library from the vault I keep on the external drive but it's about 4GB smaller. The original aperture lib with incorrect permissions is 100.54GB and the new lib is 96.5GB.
As far as I can tell the library that has been created from the vault is up to date, so why has it shrunk by 4GB? Has the process of rewriting it in one go saved it to the disk more efficiently?
Regards,
Dave.

The vault is smaller as it doesn't store thumbnails or previews, both of which take up a noticeable amount of space.
When you use the restored library, I'd expect the thumbnails will get automatically rebuilt. The previews may as well, so eventually it will fluff back up.

• Two machines saving the same file as different sizes?

My coworker and I both have the same version of Illustratir (CS6) and both use Lion on iMacs, but today noticed something weird. He saved a file similar to a file I had done before as both an eps and a pdf and his file size was more than twice what my file sizes usually are. I thought it was odd, so I copied everything from his file into a new file (same dimensions) and saved out an eps and pdf (default settings), and like I thought, my files were less than half the size of his.
Why would two machines be saving identical files at different sizes? Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing? Everything in the file is vector, if it matters. There's not even any editable text.

See the mechanism of saving here: http://superuser.com/questions/66825/what-is-the-difference-between-size-and-size-on-disk
The size of the "blocks" depends on the size of the disk and how it's been formatted.

• Two hard drives with exact same files showing different sizes

I have two WD external drives, one which I'm trying to dedicate solely to Time Machine backups.  In transferring data from the one I intend to use for that purpose to the other, I'm finding that all the files transferred but that the folders register as having different sizes (e.g. one video folder has the same number in each, but on the original disk it was 4.43 GB in total and is only 4.26 GB on the new disk).
I've read that there could be hidden system files that didn't move, but if that's the case does it matter?  Both drives are the same model but are differently formatted.
Thanks

but are differently formatted.
That could be the cause. Files are not written to a disk in bytes, they are written in blocks that are a minimum size. For instance, if the minimum block size is 1KB, the a 5 byte file will occupy 1KB on the disk. So, depending on the block size of the drive format, you may get different results.

• Library & Vault significantly different sizes

My library is 678 gigs. My vault for that library is only 556 gigs. And all is up-to-date.
I know they should be a different size, but more than 100 gigs worth?
I have never seen this before.
Anyone else?

Yeah, the vault doesn't store the thumbnails or the previews, given it's a backup and given they can all be generated.
This is to save space. In your case it saves about 120 GB of space

• Recording two different size windows into one timeline

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help.
I'm trying to capture two different size animations, one 900
x 600 and one much bigger, say 1280 by 700....How can I get them
into the same timeline? It seems captivate only allows one size
frame recording per movie.....
Any hints?
cheers
zig

Hi zig
The only way I can fathom this happening is to take Captivate
and record the larger. Then use the Project > Resize option to
reduce the size of the larger to match the smaller. Then import
that/those slide(s) into the smaller.
Or, you could go the other way around. Record at the larger,
leave it at that size, then import the smaller into the larger via
File > Import > Slides/Objects.
Cheers... Rick

• Multiple stages on multiple screens of different size

I'm working on a project that requires me to have two stages on two screens of different size. How do I do this in Flex, or is it even possible?
More specifically, I am building a kiosk appliction, that will have the menu on a small touch-screen that sits in front of a larger, wall-mounted screen. When the user selects content to be played (videos, web sites, whatever) from the touch-screen, then the effect of that selection needs to be sent to the other stage. I need to be able to run a screen-saver on the main screen, also. Basically, the controls are the main application, and the other screen is simply a container for viewing things.
I am currently packaging my Flex project in AIR, not through the web, so I actually have a windowed application. Basically, I just need to create a new window with a custom chrome that simply holds a movie.
Is such a thing possible in Flex? I couldn't figure out how to spawn another stage, much less one that was referencable from the first stage.

Hey all. I have reached the answer. I left everything up that I posted before, in case anybody is having similar issues. To create the custom component, click your project, create a package, and then right-click that package and create a new MXML component. Then, create the MXML just like you would before. Your root tag will be whatever you are working to modify (so, s:Window for my case, but you can do an s:Label or whatever you want). So, first, I'll give you the code for my simple Window component:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!-- This is a window component which creates a transparent window with no system chrome (no bars, close, min, max buttons, resize stuff) that contains... This screen is spawned from the main MXML WindowedApplication using AS 3. -->
<s:Window xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                        xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
                        xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
                        systemChrome="none" visible="true" transparent="true" showStatusBar="false" width="400" height="300"
        <s:layout>
            <s:BasicLayout />
        </s:layout>
        <s:Label id="controlScreenTitle" text="new Window from VideoScreen component" fontSize="72" fontWeight="normal" color="#222222">
        <s:filters>
            <s:DropShadowFilter color="#CCCCCC" />
        </s:filters>
        </s:Label>
</s:Window>
All I did was a very simple white box there. You can disable the system chrome and such from the main Window tag, as I have shown. The window this creates has no [ _ ] [ [] ] [ x ] buttons, bar along the bottom, or any background. In my actual project, this component will hold a container to play my video objects.
Then, I create my main document:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!-- This is the main MXML file for the application. MXML is based on pure XML, and is actually a short-cut to generating AS code. You use MXML to set up the layout of the stage. -->
<s:WindowedApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                            xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
                            xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
                            showStatusBar="false" alwaysInFront="false"
                            creationComplete="init()">

        <fx:Style source="KioskScreensStyles.css" />
        <fx:Script source="controlScreenMain.as" />
        <fx:Script>

                        * s:HorizontalLayout and s:VerticalLayout will lay out elements horizontally or vertically on the stage. You can specify padding around each object (example below).             <s:ToggleButton id="btn6" label="Play video 6" click="btn6_clickHandler(event)" />
        </s:BorderContainer>
</s:WindowedApplication>
Now, the important part will be the .as file. Here's parts of that:
/* import custom components. This is what allows us to open a new window in AIR. NOTE: THIS IS HOW YOU GET THAT CUSTOM MXML FILE IN HERE TO USE */
import customComponents.VideoScreen;

If anybody looking at this has any questions about it, feel free to ask me. I am not usually able to comb the forums, so you'll have to PM me or something. I actually put this up right after I found my solution, so there is work still to be done on it (obviously). But if you ever need to do anything like this, here's some code for you.

• Datagram Socket  send different sizes Buffers ...

hi,
I'm sending different sizes Datagrams from a datagram socket
so how can I receive them
I've tried to send the packet in two packets the first one is fixed size that carries the size of the real data then create a suitable buffer on the client side to receive the second packet but the result is very slow ...
I'd like to know any suggestions about how to do this properly
to reach a stream like synchronization between the client and the server ..
thanks in advance

use a receive buffer large enough for the largest package possible on your network. Typically, this is 1500 data bytes, but it depends on the network technology. If you want to be sure, allocate a 65536 bytes buffer, which will fit for any technology. But typically, 1550 will fit in a LAN.

• Why photos in iPhoto (mac) have a different size (mb) than the original?

I have noticed that some photos (not all) have a smaller size (in MB) in iPhoto than the original ones. Do you know the reasons of such decrease of size? iPhoto import procedure is supposed to not lose any information wrt the orignal one then, why the imported photos in some cases should be smaller? Thanks in advance.

1. the source of the original size is the size that I read in the finder (not the one read in the camera).
2. the pictures are jpg
3. the source of the anomalous size is the info box of iphoto, the box where you can find all the exif info, resolution, iso, f-number, EV, etc. In this box you can read also the size of the photo, and here I find that for some photos a smaller size than the original one read in the finder.
4. for the records the camera is a FUJI S5 pro.
5. the photos are not edited in iphoto, as said in my reply, just imported and placed in a album. I just import photos in a folder on my mac, import those photos in iphoto, and I find the mismatch of the size between the photos in the folder on my desktop with the original photos and the ones in iphoto. As said, this does not happen for all photos, but for a subset, which appears to be random, since I do not find common features in these photos. I have check in older photos imported and find similar mismatch.
I know that's crazy, I really do not understand why this strange fact is happening. It is even stranger, that if I import twice the same photo, I read two different size in iphoto.

• How do we do production orders for same item code in different sizes

Hi,
We have Items which we buy as a single sheet of material and our customers can ask for us to cut the complete sheet into different sizes before despatching it. i.e
Item Code Sheet1: Sheet size 100mm x 100mm
Customer asks for sheet to be cut into 10 off 10mm x 10mm sheets, which we presently put on the sales order as a line note
We then generate a production order for this item and indicate on the production order printout the line note
We've recently had a customer who has asked for Item 1 in two different sizes on the same sales order ie
Order Line 1 Sheet1 Qty:1 Line note: cut into 10mm x 10mm sheets
Order Line 2 Sheet1 Qty:1 Line note: cut into 50mm x 50mm sheets
When generating the Production order SAP combines the items into
Product No: Sheet1
Planned Qty: 2
Where as we want it to create 2 production orders 1 of each different sizes items.
I know I can create BOMs for those two sizes, but customers can ask for the sheets to be cut to whatever size they want. Is the best method to create BOMs on the fly for each different sizing option or are there alternative methods that are easier to manage ?
Thanks
Carl

Hi Carl Rutter,
You have to creat 2 special production order for this item. when issue the component make sure you issue the stock as per the cosumption becaue one have 10mmx10mm and the another item have 50x50 in this case you issue component by square inch wise. for example 10*10 = 100 squre inch.
50*50 = 2500 square inch so the cost will be approtionate. you can Use multiple uom method to obtain this, other wise you have covert into stock then you issue the component. If you want traxk size wise ,you can use batch option for Finishe goods.

• Why do I get different size redings?

I just noticed while looking through my iTunes music that it shows two different sizes? If I look at the "music folder" in my iTunes folder it calculates to 28.62GB, but when I open iTunes and look at the bottom it reads "2184 songs 6.8 days 19.82GB? Why the different size readings.
Also what is the best way to get rid of duplicates? I have a music folder and my wife has a music folder (on her machine) and I have two back ups of music folders from long ago that I have forgotten about on my back up drive. Whats the best way to consolidate every thing and NOT be storing a bunch of duplicates?

Thanks StarDeb55:
I checked and I do have a Unknown Artist folder 1.36GB and a Unkown folder 8.4MB. They have misc music in them including a lot of old system sounds, but no movie files. I have ripped some movies but they are all in my movie fold on my local HD and my back up HD. So that accounts for about 1.44GB of space?

• Photo books - many different sizes not possible?

Hi. Does Elements 9 really offer only two sizes for photo books?
I want to produce a photo book with multiple pages. But Elements 9 (German version) offers only two sizes:
297 mm x 210 mm (A4)
300 mm x 300 mm
Above those two sizes i see the words “Print locally” (in German). These words “Print locally” cannot be changed. (I have an A4 printer installed.)
I want to produce a PDF file in Elements and send it to an online printing service. These online printing services print photo books in many different sizes from PDF (i will not send it via Elements’ own system). Does Elements 9 really offer only two sizes for photo books?
Am i seeing something wrong? I already changed the printer driver, checked preferences in Editor and Organizer, but found no way at all to get different sizes.
Thanks for all hints!

To merge the libraries manually use "File > Export".
To save the high quality originals, set the export panel like this, with "Kind Original":
If you have edited versions with added titles, caption, places, etc, use these export settings to save your work:

• Iphoto import imported my photos in different sizes

I have transferred my iPhoto library from my old MacBokPro to my new one.
Initially I used Migration Assistant which took 2 days but eventually worked.
The problem is that when I click on a photo in the new library the photo is a very small version of the same photo from the old library?
Not all of the photos are small so for example there could be 20 photos taken on the one day but 7 are much much smaller in the library on the new MBP
They are both running iPhoto 9.5.1 and when I compare the info of the new photo on the new MBP to the old MBP the information is the same it's only the size of the photo in the library that is different.
I'm concerned that the quality will be affected should I need to print down the track.
I have spent days( not an exaggeration!! ) with Apple who have given me many different "remedies" none which have changed the size of the photos.
The latest "remedy" was Airdropping the folder over again which re imported the photos exactly the same way as they did initially on Migration Assistant.
Should I just stop wasting more phone time with support and just book a Genius appointment that way I can take both computers in and get it sorted out?

which re imported the photos exactly the same way as they did initially on Migration Assistant.
And therein lies the problem. You've imported one iPhoto Library into another. When you do that every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo - hence the different sizes  -  you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I cannot stress enough: there is no importing involved. So, no drag and drop to the iPhoto icon, no drag and drop to the iPhoto window, no File -> Import
Just: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

• Same file is different sizes on differently formatted external HDDs

First question: I have two external drives; one is formatted for MS-DOS File System (FAT32) and the other is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). When I copy a folder from the DOS drive to the OS X drive, the folder is a different size on the two drives. Is this normal? Is there any chance that some of the data is missing or corrupted? If it's normal. is there a way to calculate what the difference should be so I can feel comfortable erasing the DOS drive once I've transferred everything off it.
Second (sort-of related) question: if I don't care to use my external drive with a Windows PC, what is the BEST format for the drive? Why? If I do want to use the drive with a Windows PC, what is the best format? Why?
Thanks so much wonderful and helpful other Mac users!

Hello! The different file sizes are normal in my experience. If you want to use it with both MSDOS is the only way but if Mac only the Mac HFS+ JOurnaled is best. Tom
