Two version of Numbers

After updating to numbers 3 I have 2 versions of numbers on my iMac. How can I delete the older version?

This is normal. The Mac App Store kept the old Numbers version in case you need it in the future.
I recommend you to leave the old version there because users have complained about the lack of features of the new Numbers version, so it's better to keep it in case you need one of the features of the old version. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6049?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If you are sure you don't need the old Numbers version, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and delete the old Numbers version (or move it to an external drive)

  • New version of Numbers - two important questions

I'm running the new version of Numbers and have some questions.
First let me say that I switched from PC to Mac earlier this year.  I decided I wanted to try Numbers instead of Excel.  Although I do have Office for Mac installed as well.  I setup a basic check register.  The "type" field is a pull down thing so I can select the type of transaction...deposit, debit, etc.  That's still working fine.  I have a description field that is for who or what is being paid or deposited.  The Category field is for the type of item...salary, credit card payment, utility, etc.  In the previous version, I would start typing in those two fields and if I had previously typed something, it would ome up for me to select.  This made things very easy for me.  Now in this new version, that feature is not there.  I did some quick reading in the forum and I believe I read that this feature is no longer in the new version.  Is that correct??  Why they heck did they do that....it makes things harder.  I guess I could try to setup a pull-down for the category field but frankly I don't want to do that.  For the type field (deposit, debit, etc), I don't mind having a pull down as there's not a lot of choices there.  But the category field would have quite a few items.
Second question is another annoying problem...
In the previous version when I opened the file, it would be right where I saved it.  I always save the check register at the start of the next entry so it's right where I need it to open next time.
Every time I open the file (even after saving it with the cursor on the next entry), it opens all the way at the top.  It's extremely annoying to have to scroll all the way down to the next blank entry.  Is there any way to fix this??
I saved a template of this file before I started using it in June.  I will start a new file using the template each year.  I didn't go all the way back to January when I started this file, I just started it from June.  Still have the old Excel file for previous info.  So the file isn't as "long" as next years would be...but it's still very annoying to have to scroll down every time I open the file.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi Jerry,
That's what I do every time.
I select the first cell on the next blank line and save the file.  Although I was using the menu to save & close.
I just tried it again and used the shortcuts for save and close.  I had the cursor in the first cell which is the type cell pull down menu.  Saved, closed and re-opened and it was all the way back at the beginning again.  Tried it once more but this time istead of selecting the pull down cell, I selected the next empty one.  Same thing.  When I re-open it goes back to the beginning.
I don't understand it.  It was fine before I updated to the new version of Numbers.
I checked my budget file.  I scrolled down, clicked a cell and saved it.  Went back in and it was right where I left it.  Strange.  I think I just figured it out....
There were two differences in the files.  The register has the top two lines frozen, the budget doesn't.  The register only has one sheet and it wasn't renamed.  The budget has a sheet for each month named accordingly.  So I went to the register and renamed the sheet.  Scrolled down to the blank entry, saved and closed.  Opened it back up and it was right where I left it.
Don't understand it, but it looks like it's now fixed.
    Thanks.

    How to solve this problem?

    Hi Jaspers,
A Header Row and a Header Column might work for you
Or two extra Tables to show the Row and Column labels

  • "need a newer version of Numbers" error message?

I am getting an error message that i "need a newer version of Numbers to open this document" message when i try to open a file i created with the newest version of Numbers that i downloaded a few months back. anyone know a fix?

App icons are seldom changed as an application goes through various versions. The assumptionis that you will have only on version installed at any given time. If you do need to keep and run two versions, place the icon attached to the most often one on the Dock, and start the other from the Finder when you need it.

Numbers file created w new version of Numbers on my mac and then transferred  via Dropbox to my ipad: file cannot be opened by iOS version of Numbers

    Hi Jocomo,
That's correct. Dropbox does not handle Numbers 3.0 for Mac and Numbers 2.0 for iOS documents well at all. They will probably fix this.
But why are you using Dropbox for this?  Numbers has built-in iCloud integration for the very purpose of syncing documents back and forth.  It's much easier than using Dropbox even if Dropbox could handle the new Numbers format.  And it's now quite reliable.
To enable iCloud with Numbers on your Mac:
In System Preferences>iCloud make sure you have Documents & Data turned on:
And after clicking Options, make sure you have checked Numbers.app:
On your iPad you need to make sure iCloud sync is turned on in TWO places:
      Settings>iCloud>Documents & Data>Numbers
      Settings>Numbers>Use iCloud
If you have entered the right iCloud credentials on your Mac and iPad, Numbers will then sync back and forth. It's much easier than putting in Dropbox and then having to Open in... , etc.  You can of course still keep backup copies of your documents in Dropbox if you want.

  • You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet.

I currentlyhave Numbers '09.  When I try and open any older numbers file I get this message.  "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet."  My updates are current.  Any ideas on what to do?

It's quite easy to open up Numbers, ask it "about Numbers" up in the bar, and it's quite clearly running 3.0.1.
I'm not a n00b computer user by any stretch. What's happening here makes no sense. Two days ago myself (and apparently a lot of people) could open up our files just fine in Numbers 3, which apparenlty was updated on my computer in mid-October. Then for no reason whatsoever, those same files won't open.
For no reason I can discern either, some of my files will open, and some won't. Two files, for example, I open nearly every day. One of them opens today, the other doesn't. They are clones of each other, so the structure & formulas are the same, but the data differs. Why will one open and the other not? It makes no rational sense.
Also, I only tested using Numbers 2.3 to see if other (older) files would open. Obviously, a document converted to a newer version of Numbers, isn't backwards compatible. So I'm not attempting to open my regular files using an old version of Numbers, since that's clearly not going to work.
I can open old files, and they pop right up in Numbers 3. It asks me to upgrade the files in order to save them.
Again, the problem is that for some inexplicable reason, files that opened two days ago in Numbers 3, will no longer open in Numbers 3.
I have opened up Numbers 3 directly and tried to open these files. Nope.
I have right clicked on the file in the Finder and told it to open it with Numbers 3. Nope.
I have double checked the last day I used the file (in this case, December 30) to make sure I'm not looking at the wrong file. Opens? Nope.
I opened the other file (the clone) and it opens. Then I try to open the file in question using either "open" or "open recent", and...Nope.
I have reinstalled Numbers 3. Opens? Nope.
I have tried to open many files, and some open and some don't.
I have made sure my file names don't have any weird extension on the end, like ".dorkedupfile" or something.
I have renamed the file and removed ".numbers" on the end of the file. Nope.
    I put it back. Nope.
    Sigh.

  • Using two version of Crystal Report Application Server simultaneously

We are currently using Crystal Report Server XI Release 1 in a production environment, and we would like to test Crystal Report Server XI Release 2 in a test environment, on the same network.
Is there a way to be using those two versions simultaneously on the same network, using the same license key, for test purposes ?
If our tests are conclusive, we will upgrade our production environment to Release 2.
    Thank you
    Anthony Arnaud

As long as they are not on the same computer this is a rather comon configuration as best practices dictate that customers should maintain multiple environments (DEV/UAT/PROD) for example.
If you are trying to install both on the same server it's not supported with those 2 versions and is known to cause issues where neither will work (different story if using unix and different port numbers).

  • Reverting to previous version of Numbers

Is there a way to revert to previous version of NUMBERS? I am using MAVERICK and I want to go back.

You can have the iWork '09 apps be the default but still have the new apps installed. After I installed the new iWork updates I created a folder on an external drive & named it "other applications." I then moved the new iWork apps to this folder & renamed the applications Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. I have icons for two versions of Pages & Numbers (I rarely use Keynote) in my Dock. Even with two versions of Pages & Numbers running, double-clicking an existing file opens in Pages 4.3 or Numbers 2.3. This will also keep the Mac App Store from nagging you to update.

  • Update left two versions of PS

I just took the update from Adobe today and now I have two versions of PS CC.  Two very different release numbers. And of course the second release does not have all of my extensions and plug-ins installed.  WTF Adobe?
How do I get rid of one of these versions?  And which one?

I wanted to look into this issue before I installed CC "2014".. I too thought the whole idea with this was that the new versions would install over old versions. In the past I would install my apps into \adobe\photoshop (for example) and just keep installing over that same directory. As far as I know there is no option to specify the installation directory via CC. Is that correct?
Is there a way to download the apps and install them "the old fashion way" so I can specify where to install?
I've already run into this problem with the various update to Lightroom and wound up with multiple versions of Lightroom on my machine as well.
It is very frustrating but at least I know what I'm in for when I eventually do the install.

I can open some older numbers files but not other. I get a message saying I need a new version of numbers. Why would some files open and not others?

    SK,
Here's the deal. If you ever open a Numbers file with Version 3, the file is converted to Version 3 and can't be opened again by Version 2. Version 2 and Version 3 are undoubtedly both on your machine and they look so similar that you may not realize which you are using. So, there are two steps to getting into trouble.
    1. Open a Numbers 2 file with Numbers 3, edit it and Close it.
    2. Try to open that file with Version 2. You ill get the error.
To always get it right, find the file you want to open in Finder, Right-Click it and choose Open With... and pick Version 3 from the drop down list.
If you have a file that you prefer to use only in Version 2, always use Open with... Numbers 2.3.

  • How to update a package between two versions

I have a package that has two versions, for example: app_1.0 and app_2.0. How can I update the app_2.0 to a system that already installed the app_1.0. I want to overwrite the app_2.0 to the app_1.0 instead of installing another instance of app_2.0.
    Any reply is appreciated. Thanks.

There's your problem, try turning it upside down.
May I suggest a work around.
I don't know why you want to put a space between the numbers and the percentage sign as that is not standard practice, but:
    +Select last number and % > Inspector > Text > Text > Spacing > Character > drag to the right+

  • You need a newer version of Numbers

All of sudden, Numbers 3.0.2 is saying I need a newer version.  As I see it on the Map App Store, the latest is 3.1.
However the Mac App store does not show any Updates pending and under Purchases, it's already Installed (dimmed out like others which are installed).

    Joe,
When you installed Numbers 3.x,  The Installer moved the previous version (2.3) to the folder "/Applications/iWork '09".
Now both versions are now installed on your computer.  You have accidentally launched the previous version of Numbers and then tried to open a new version file.
You can tell the two version apart by observing the icons:
              Version                         Version
                  3.x                              2.3
I keep both version in my dock and launch the one I mean to launch (or drag the documnet to the icon I wan to use to open the document).
Once you have launched Numbers you can also check the version my using the menu item "Number > About Numbers" .  Each version will report a different version.

  • I downloaded newest version of Numbers as prompted, but now cannot open old work

I downloaded newest version of Numbers, as prompted, but now cannot open old work.
When I try to, the message is that I need to download new version.
Because I help run a small business, I have found a work around, for now, with old template, so we can still keep billing (very important)
but I just realized that when printing a saved pdf format copy of an invoice, completed after the
update, the color logo is not printing even though it appears to be there.
I guess this is two problems.
I have a Mac OSX version 10.9.4 and downloaded, I thought, Numbers 3.2.2 (but did not pay for app)
    thanks,

    Margarita,
You should still have the previous version of Numbers and may continue to use it.
The previous version is located in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09"
You can tell the difference between the two versions by noting  the icon:
         Numbers 2.3                    Number 3.2
         3 bars                              4 bars
I keep both in my dock so that I know which one I am launching

iPod 4,1 will not update to iOS 7. I updated my iMac to 10.9.1 (maverick). Latest Numbers version on iMac is not compatible with Numbers on iPod. Ideas? Can I go back a version with Numbers? I downloaded old version of Numbers 2.0.1 from DVD but with both versions the 2.0.1 will not open.  So both versions are present but only the new version functions. I tried to drag the new version to the trash but the old version still runs error message and will not open. I did not try to restart with the new version in the trash.

    Maybe. See:

Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.
