Two versions of Front Row?

I just noticed using System Profiler that there are two versions of Front Row on my iMac.
Version 1.0 is located in /Applications
Version 2.1.6 is located in /System/Library/CoreServices/
Double-clicking either one brings up versions 2.1.6.
Does all this sound correct?
I don't use Front Row all that much, but I don't want an extra app hanging around on my hard drive either.

Yes, that's normal. The version 1.0 application in your Applications folder is really just a handy shortcut to the real application that lives buried in your System folder. When Apple introduced Front Row in Leopard for all Macs, even those without an Apple remote, I believe they were giving those users a more direct way of launching Front Row. If you want, you can delete the application in your Applications folder and you can still open Front Row with the keyboard or Apple remote. However, since it takes up less than half of one megabyte, I don't think you have to worry about it hanging around and filling-up your hard drive!

  • Two problems with Front Row

    Hello.
I have all my music on my iMac and I am streaming it to my Mac Mini connected to my TV and stereo. What I have noticed is that the cover art on my music tracks don't show when I play any of the shared tracks or playlists, just the default picture with the two notes. Is there something I can do that will display it? I have tried to start iTunes and connect the shared library there before starting Front Row but that didn't help.
I also have a problem with listing my pictures in Front Row. I have an external drive connected to my Mini that has all my pictures and movies. I have no trouble playing the movies (I created an alias in the Movies catalog to the Movies catalog on the external drive), but if I create an alias in the Pictures catalog to the Pictures catalog on the external drive the catalog isn't shown in Front Row. Do I have to import all the pictures into iPhoto? I don't use iPhoto at all because I always use the program that came with my Nikon camera that shows all the picture information, such as focal length, what lens I used, white balance setting, etc. (or Adobe Photoshop Elements it I want to make some changes). Is there something I can do to fix this too?
    Thanks,
    Erik Aleksander Moe

  • Front Row: two questions

    Hi,
I have two questions to Front Row:
    1. Front Row have problems with playing video podcasts? Is this right so? I can't see video podcasts with Front Row
    2. Front row have problems with sleep mode of my iMac G5 20".
When I use the Apple Remote to wake up my iMac from sleep mode, Front Row doesn't start here. I see only the Mac finder. Why?
    Sorry for my bad english.
    Greetings, Bernd

  • Front Row on Snow Leopard has audio out of sync on movies and TV shows and some movies wont show images.

I have an iMac Core Duo 2GHz (yes, first Intel iMac). I have Snow Leopard v10.6.8 (latest/last MacOS version I could load) with the most recent Security Update (2013-003).
I have two issues with Front Row:
    • Some of the movie files will not show the images, but I can hear the audio.
    • On other movies and TV shows they start fine, but within a few minutes the audio is out of sync with the images, running about 3-5 seconds ahead... Looks like a bad dub of a Japanese movie from the 60s.
Now, I know it's related to Front Row, because when I jump over to iTunes and start the same movie or TV show it begins where I left off in Front Row, but images are fine and audio is suddenly in-sync.
However, with Snow Leopard being 2 major upgrades back - 3 if you count the upcoming Mavericks release - I doubt this registers as a "brouhaha" on Apple's radar screens. Then, again, maybe the spirit of Steve won't tolerate this Microsoft-like quirk, even if my iMac is still chugging along after 7 years and multiple MacOS X upgrades & updates...

I think I found my answer... or culprit. It has to do with Snow Leopard, and my iMac Core Duo, being the last of the dying breed of 32-bit systems, and that iTunes v11.x is 64-bit (heavily, at least)...
Guess I need to break down and replace my 7 year old iMac, even though it still works beautifully (otherwise).

  • Unable to properly install Front Row!!!

My brand new 17" Mac Book Pro is having problems installing Frontrow! It wasn't even preloaded as I thought it would be. Every time I try to install it an error message comes up1 I was just wondering if this is common and if there is something I should do to install it. Thank you
    TMC

I have just experienced the same problem with mine. I finally went to use it, and realized it wasn't even installed.
When I try to install it from the installer disk one of two things will happen. First it will say that the software was installed successfully and I need to reboot. Once I reboot, Front Row is nowhere to be found. All that I can find is the installation package in my Receipts folder.
If I try to install it again, the option is only for an upgrade, at which point it will tell me that an error occurred and I had to try again.
At no point in the process will Software Update tell me that I have any version of Front Row installed that may need updating either.
Prior to all this I did update to iTunes 7.0.1.
    Thanks,
    Clint

  • Mac Mini w/ Front Row vs. AppleTV

I've been comparing the AppleTV to the Mac Mini for media server capabilities, and while I've nearly settled on the Mini, there are a couple questions I want to clear up before I start spending. Obviously most people opting for a Mac Mini over an AppleTV would be using FrontRow for their media consumption. But there are a couple feature on the AppleTV that don't appear on FrontRow, such as the ability to browse and watch YouTube videos, and the ability to buy and rent movies and shows within FrontRow. I was wondering if anyone knew of plans to add this functionality to FrontRow OR some way of adding it yourself.

I doubt they'll add it. The Front Row on the AppleTV and regular macs are now two different animals. Apple will probably want to keep it this way, to keep people buying it because of its unique version of Front Row, not found on a mac that Apple customers may already own.
But there are various ways of downloading YouTube videos ahead of time and then watching them on Front Row. See this MacRumors forum on the topic:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=251390
I was actually at one point also choosing between the two, however, I wasn't as interested in the YouTube functionality. The decider for me was how it fit into my current computer line-up. I also have a laptop, and it has a small hard drive, so its not suitable to hold my media for the AppleTV to access. I'm going to buy the Mac mini because it can function as an AppleTV (spare a few extra functions like YouTube in Front Row) and as a host for all my media (AppleTVs aren't built to be true stand-alone devices).
If your going to buy the Mac mini, try and hold out for a while; its due for an hardware update soon.

  • Cannot install Front Row update 1.3.1

Software update unloaded the installer for this update. I have tried to run it several times and each time receive an error message indicating that installation failed & I should try again.
    Two questions:
    1. How do I determine what version of Front Row is installed on my computer?
    2. How can I install this update??

I was having trouble installing this update too. I finally went to the Apple downloads site and re-downloaded the update. I then tried installing it again and it worked! Try that. I don't know how to tell what version you have.

  • Can I use Front Row with my Macbook closed?

I just got a mini-dvi to video cable for my macbook. I love using front row with it but I was wondering if there was a way that you could use front row with the laptop closed. Oh and I'm using tiger, so its not the new version of front row.

With your computer attached to a keyboard you should be able to wake it from sleep and run it properly with the lid closed.

  • Front Row in the MacBook Pro

    Hey
Is the version of Front Row shipped in Macbook Pro the same as the one in the new Intel MacMini? The Front row description in the apple site http://www.apple.com/macmini/frontrow.html talks about "Let Mac mini and Front Row entertain you by playing songs, slideshows, and videos from other computers in the house"
The reason i am asking is becoz i want to know if one can use the FrontRow In the MacBook Pro to see my Photos, Music, videos that is stored in my PPC MacMini instead of porting the whole collection from the Macmini to the Macbook Pro?

I don't have my MBP yet but from what I gathered the versions are the same and include Bonjour that allows you to share media and files from one OS X machine to another without actually have to copy the files from one computer to another. It should 'just work' as Apple says.

  • Front Row Video problem

For some reason whenever i go to Front Row and go to the video section, it goes directly back to the desktop. I have restarted my computer twice and the same thing happened. Does anybody know a fix?
    P.S.
I have tiger so its not the most recent version of front row

If you use the Accounts System Preferences to create a new user, log out and log in as the new user, can they open the "Videos" module? If so, then Front Row is functioning normally but you may have a file in your original user's Movies folder that's causing the trouble. If the new user can't open the videos module, then there's some kind of system-wide Front Row or QuickTime problem.

  • Front row with mpeg2 video

    evening board
i have a ppc mini with an "enabler" version of front row.
I have many gigs of mpeg2 streams recorded from an eyetv session that play fine in eyetv, VLC and mplayer however i get horizonal lines appear when I play it in quicktime or frontrow.
It seems to happen most when lost of screen activity is happening e.g. a panning camera or an explosion.
As I alread said this does'nt happen in eyetv or VLC or even mplayer, just frontrow and quicktime.
I can play divx encoded movies in frontrow fine, no problems and things like podcasts are fine also it just seems to be mpeg2.
    any ideas?
is it a interlace-deinterlace problem? I have a plasma telly I am using as the display (VGA in) however this is the first time I have ever had an issue (games are fine as are all other apps).
I think its a quicktime codec issue but can't find where to fiddle.
Any help would be great, as I'm not relishing the fact that I may have to divx encode 300Gig of mpeg2 just to view it in frontrow.
    cheers
    Steve

i have come to the conclusion that it is the mpeg2 codec for QT.
converting the mpeg2 to DV and playing using QT allows the de-interlace option to work as the DV codec seems to support this.
    however not for mpeg2
at the moment I am using VLC player, but this has no nice user front end like front row making my mini a less than elegant media centre.
VLC manages de-interlacing fine, various options blend/bob progressive etc etc all produce nice results.
its possibel, so why doesn;t QT do what it says on the tin?
    any suggestions from anyone?
    very disapointed.........

  • Front Row Video Conversion

Most of the video files I have I play with VLC beacuse quicktime will not play them. They are avi files. I was wondering if there was some program out there that would convert these files to mp4 or something quicktime can read so ic an play them in front row.
OR if there is a way to change the default player of front row that would be great. VLC is more versatile than quicktime. It will play quicktime files but not the other way around. Thanks!!

You're welcome. The current version of Front Row will only play on the "main" screen. You can choose to "mirror" both displays and then you'll see the same thing on both your built-in screen and the TV or other display. When Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is released later this year, it will include Front Row for everyone. I would send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to have an option to select the display screen for Front Row.

  • Front row video

i dont know what it is.. but front row is VERY slow when i wanna play videos (even mpeg4 and h264 videos) i tried to install divx, but it isnt getting better.. everytime i start front row and choose videos its horrible, i have to wait for 2 minutes, then my videos are listed, when i wanna go back it takes me nearly 5 minutes, i dont know how to close front row manually. any ideas to get this thing faster?
tomorrow ill get my memory, maybe it will get faster..

i think it is the latest version of front row, there is no update available on the update service of macosx..
i dont have ANY things in my itunes database
the movie folder konsists of 6 files à 300mb
but i think MOVIES, are much bigger than that.. so it shoul handle it..
why the **** sells apple computers with only 512mb of ram? seems so tiny!

  • Auto-Quit Front Row on exit?

    Hi everyone.
Having just received a new MacBook with Leopard, I've been playing around with the new version of Front Row. First off, it's great, runs smoothly and exactly as I want it to. However, I've noticed that Front Row.app uses an awfully big chunk of RAM. This is understandable for when it's active/running - it's a hefty app. The thing I don't like is that after I've exited Front Row, it's still running (as shown in Activity Monitor), still using a big amount of RAM. Is there a way to change the behavior of it, so that when I exit Front Row with the remote it actually quits the Front Row.app process? It's kinda annoying to go into Activity Monitor to quit it manually. Also, the Front Row app icon, now available in Leopard doesn't show it as actively running, so no help there. Does it eventually quit on its own, and I'm just jumping the gun by going to Activity Monitor?
    Thanks!
    William

Saying it will 'eventually' quit is a little vague. Any idea how long it floats around running in the background for? I have an external drive I use with my MacBook, with aliases that point toward it in my movies folder (so that I can view movies stored on the external drive). The problem is that until Front Row /quits/ I cannot eject the drive. So I have to fire up Activity Monitor and quit Front Row that way. Rather annoying, especially when I just want to eject the drive, close the laptop, and get moving.

  • DVD through Front Row locks up first time

    Hi,
one of my issues with the new mac mini is that the dvd menu is unresponsive the first time I load a dvd. I need to exit the player (menu button on remote) then play from the beginning again and then the disc will work.
Anyone else also having this issue?

that used to happen on my mac mini...have you tried downloading the most recent version of front row?
