Two video cards at once problem

i just got an eGeForce 9600 GTX card and i put it on my MSI P6N SLI Platinum nvidia motherboard.
There are two PCI 16 Express slots. The card works fine alone but...
What i was hoping to do, was to run my old GeForce 7600 GT at the same time and run
two little monitors off it and then run my hi def tv and bigger monitor off the 9600.
My computer isn't recognizing the 7600...it's in there securely...i've pulled it out put it
back in etc...it was working totally fine before today so the problem isn't with the card...
While reading my book for my motherboard it says that i can't run two video
cards unless they are SLI linked. I don't want SLI...one 9600 is fine for video games. I want
four monitors...Has anyone heard of this? Is there any way around this?
anything I can try in the bios or anything like that? has there been a bios workaround for this
or anything?  i've been googling around and found nothing. i've never heard of motherboards
that exclusively do this...what's the point?
..if they have two PCI 16 slots why not let them both work??
I'm running vista 64 bit...
any help soooo appreciated
thanks

Now, the strange thing is: after a few initial issues one of the macs is doing fine. The second one, on the contrary, is a nightmare. Finalcut gives a green screen of death and hangs up suddenly while performing simple operations (like dropping a clip on the timeline).
I'm thinking of trying to replace the two video cards with an older single dual display card, and giving up the fancy lcd monitors (that i bought at vast cost), at least until apple issues an upgrade that adresses the two video card problem. <
If the machines are mechanically equal, it's obviously not the cards. Although you can only be absolutely certain if you swap the cards between machines and see if the green screen issue follows one or both cards.
However, that new LCD display and card combination doesn't have much time in the pipeline so there could be other issues and you're doing the beta testing for all of us. Blaming the reseller is pointless; no one can keep track of all of these issues. We only find out about them only because of reported failures.
You should research the "green screen" here on the forum. I do not recall if there are display or graphics cards issues associated with it. That seems unlikely. IIRC, it appears to be a QT issue.

  • What are the benefits of having two video cards?

I currently have a PNY Nvidio quadro FX 3800 video card installed.  I have another card that is not installed.  It is an EVGA E-GEforce 8800GT.  I only want to run two monitors.  I am thinking with two video cards I will have live preview on screen during HD video capture.  Is this correct?  What if any other benefits will I get from running two video cards?

    Hello
I am using CS5 with a quadro 4000 card. I have two Eizo's attached to the quadro 4000 via the display port. Everything is working fine. I need to connect a plasma screen to my pc (3 monitors total) for viewing red files. I could use the red rocket to export video to the plasma screen but it would be nice if I didn't have to install another driver other than the quadro 4000 nvideo driver. My question is, will having 2 video cards installed in my pc cause any problems? If it will, I will have to use the red rocket for the third monitor. Thanks

  • Two Video Cards in Console?

Hi,  I apologize if this may be kind of a dumb question;  I have two video cards; an ATI and an NVIDIA card;  My question is fairly basic; X11 aside, should I be able to plug both video cards in and get the 'console' to display by default out of both cards?  Do I have to do anything special to setup the second card for console (i.e non-X)?  I know the OS is detecting both cards because they show up in lspci.  The second card (the card in question), also shows up in dmesg.  I dont' care if the same video signal is displayed on the second monitor; I just want it to display *something*; I am currently not getting any signal out of it.

The most promising way would be to get framebuffer consoles on both cards. For the secondary card, you will have to load a GPU specific driver that has kernel modesetting. For the primary card, you can either do this or load a generic one like uvesafb. Once you have /dev/fb0 and /dev/fb1 you can move consoles from the primary card to the secondary card using con2fb. I'm not sure if it's in an Arch package but its a C file that has been floating around the fbdev community: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … ng-454625/

  • GX60 shows two video cards? 7970M and 8650G.

I updated to the latest ati drivers, and now my laptop, GX60, thinks I have two video cards installed, a HD 7970M (true) and a HD 8650G (not true).
If I uninstall the 8650 under device manager, I am then unable to run the catalyst control manager, as it doesn't think I have a graphics card. This is even though the 7970M still shows up under devices.
Also, now when I run a youtube video, it shows as a green screen, with audio. I read that I am supposed to disable hardware acceleration under the flash menu, but that tab doesn't show up, which I believe is related to having messed up drivers.
    What do I do?

Em, no both is true. Your notebook HAS two gpus. The HD8650G is the integrated gpu of your AMD A10 APU. The 7970M is only active when 3D load is applied while everything else is covered by the integrated HD 8650G gpu.

  • Running iMovie 08 on a PowerMac G5 with two video cards?

I have two video cards installed on my PowerMac G5. The primary card is the Radeon 9600 XT (AGP). I also added a relatively inexpensive Radeon 9200 (PCI) to run a second monitor.
Under iMovie HD, this setup works well, although it does warn me that one of the video cards is unsupported. (As long as the iMovie windows are on the primary monitor). Final Cut Pro Studio 2 also has no difficulties with this setup.
iMovie 08, while it installs, starts up with a window saying that Quartz Extreme is required and only allows me to quit. The 9600 XT does support Quartz Extreme, while the 9200 does not.
While I do not use iMovie for my own video editing (I do have Final Cut Pro), I need to be able to open and see student projects created in iMovie. It seems odd that iMovie could have stiffer video card requirements than Final Cut Pro (or Motion 3).

Hello! You are correct "iMovie requires a Mac with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9GHz or faster)". You can't upgrade the G4 to run iMovie 08. Tom

  • One or two video cards?

Can anyone please help me out with a quick answer/opinion to this one?
Which would be the better choice (for Encore/Premiere of course) between these two video card possibilities?
    256MB nVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT - TV-Out + DVI - PCI-Express
    or
TWO times 256MB nVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE - DVI - SLI Configuration

  • Two video cards?

The info on the Macbook Pro says:
    "... NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT 512M..."
Do the Macbook Pros actually come with two video cards or are we to choose between the two when ordering.
If they come with both, are we forced to allow the OS to choose which it uses based upon its idea of workload or can we choose?
    Thanks
    -Mike

Well, to be technical - the 256mb is allocated for the graphics system, period. If you switch to the 9600 chip, it is not de-allocated until you reboot the machine. I would call that "stealing". But as they say, you say tomato, your friend says tomoto. And your example is of applications "using" ram, when those applications are closed, the memory is then available for other applications (except to be even more technical, with most modern operating systems, it's near impossible to avoid the interaction of virtual memory) , whereas this 256mb for the graphics is NOT available unless the computer is rebooted.
It also slows down overall operation of the computer because cycles are spent on figuring out where that 256mb is, what it contains, what it needs to contain, what it no longer needs to contain, etc etc. Those cycles could be much better spent on actual system and application operations.
Id really love to know if the 9400 chip remains in this "pro" line of laptops for ANY other reason than to allow apple to claim "Up to 8 hours of use" on a single charge??????????????

The 9400 option will "steal" 256mb of ram from your system...
What Peacheasy, who's already grousing about his MBP even though he doesn't have it yet, means by >the above is that the 9400 processor uses 256MB of the RAM that has been installed for it to share >with all the other memory-using hardware and software in your machine. It isn't "stolen" any more >than the memory used by your applications is "stolen". It's used . That's what it's there for.

  • MSI P6N SLI-FI - two video cards non SLI help

    Hi,
I am currently running Win 7 Pro 64bit on a MSI P6N SLI with a GeForce GTS 250.
I would like to run 3 monitors and thus install another video card. I was thinking about an GeForce 9400GT using PCIe.
My manual tells me I can only run two video cards in SLI mode, which I don't want to do.
Searching this forum, I found two contradicting posts; one telling me that it is possible to run two cards non-SLI (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=107857.0), one telling me it's not (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=124883.0).
Can anyone tell me which one's true?
And as an alternative, would it be possible to use a PCI (non-PCIe) card like a GeForceFX 5200 additionally to my GTS 250?
    Any help would be appreciated,
    greetings
    cmdkeen

that guy would be me and yes, my pc BSOD-ed like hell with a 8600GT and a 9800GTX, but only after a few days.
maybe it was a driverissue, but I gave up after a 3 weeks
now im running a 250GTS alongside the 9800GTX (non sli !!) and that works fine, since the 250 is essentially a rebranded 9800GTX.
so dont  be to happy yet and wait for a few days/weeks and see how it goes.
if it BSOD's, best bet is to get an identic vga, would be my advice.
good luck an keep us posted.

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum - Two Video Cards Non SLI

I have a P6N SLI Platinum that I am trying to get two video cards working at the same time, but not in an SLI configuration. I'm wanting to use them for 3 monitors at the same time. The cards are both Nvidia 8800GS, but one is by EVGA and one is XFX. Both cards work individually, but when trying to use both of them at the same time, Windows will not recognize them. I am currently running Windows XP Pro. Is this type of configuration possible with this motherboard? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

i think you will be told by msi to be able to use two card on one mobo you have to have sli enabled.

    Only three obvious drawbacks, provided you have a free PCI-1 16x slot available;
    1. You may need a much more powerful PSU.
    2. You need to improve your cooling significantly.
    3. You need to buy an extra card.

  • Is this a video card or other problem?

    Hi,
    I have a G3 B&W rev2, 450 MHz, 704 RAM, DVD-ROM system.
I have two hard disks. One the original 6 GB that runs 9.2.2,
the other is a 100 GB second internal hard drive that contains
4 partitions. One with no OS installed, one with a backup of
the 9.2.2 system, one with 10.4.0 and one with 10.4.11.
I am having startup problems with the 10.4.11 partition.
When I start up from this partition, I got the normal start up screen and
the little dial - but then instead of going to the blue screen I got 4 black rectangles
across the top of the screen. I could start up from the 10.4.0 partition, the DVD-ROM,
or my 9.2.2 disk. Disk Utility, run from the DVD-ROM or from the 10.4.0 partition, found no problems with the 10.4.11 disk or disk permissions.
Someone mentioned they thought it was a video card problem, but if it were,
would that only affect one startup disk??
I reinstalled the 10.4.11 update and the problem went away for
a month or so, but now I am having similar start-up issues again. I start up, get the
gray apple and the dial, then I get a big black rectangle in the center of the
screen like the one that shows up when the kernal crashes - but with no
text. Again, I can start from the DVD-ROM, the 10.4.0 partition and the drive
with 9.2.2. Disk Utility doesn't find any problems with the disk.
Any ideas on what is going on? I am planning to reinstall the 10.4.11 update
    again.
    Thanks,
    bdennehey

It's not the video card, or you would have problems with the other OS's on the Mac.
It's hard to say what is causing the problem. Do you use the OS 10.4.11 partition more than the others ? If so, the other OS 10.4 partition may experience the same problem if used more.
Have you added RAM lately ? Added any other hardware ?

  • Final Cut Pro - Two Video Cards - Display Turns White

    MacPro Xeon 2.0GHz
    3 Gig Ram
    Two nVidia 7300 Video Cards
Two CRT Monitors and One HDTV
I have two CRT monitors attached to my original nVidia card. I recently installed a second video card and attached a third monitor to my DVI output (on the second video card)
I tell Final Cut Pro to display video on third monitor as full screen output. I can see my 720p (or 480p) display. When I press play, the entire screen turns White. (I've tried a CRT monitor, and my LCD HDTV via HDMI to DVI).
If I remove my Right CRT monitor from my graphics card and attach my HDTV (giving me one monitor and one HDTV) I can get full screen 720p play back. But I don't want to edit with one monitor! I am wanting to have my two monitor editing setup with the third monitor as my full screen display (720p).
Why does three monitors result in a white frame for playback? Do I need to configure something?

  • Video card, or other problem.

when using the 3D tools in Illustrator, it totally chokes in processing on all but the most basic shapes/paths. it starts, but never finishes. I think the problem may be my video card doesn't have enough capacity. can someone suggest an upgrade? I have a 2x quad 2.26 with 8GB RAM.

Refresh our memory, you don't list what video card you have.
The 2.26 was a "what are they thinking" to me. A 3.2GHz 4 or 6-core.
Want to upgrade graphic card check the Store. Four choices from $150 up (Nvidia Quadro 4000 is $1195 Apple but on Amazon same PNY Mac Pro version is $790).

  • Two video cards on 845 ultra-c?

Is there a possibility to use two video boards at the same time on a 845 Ultra-C board?
I have tried with a Riva TNT AGP and an old S3 PCI board, but I cannot get the system to initialize the PCI card properly, so Windows XP reports the device cannot start (code 10).
The BIOS is the latest, v1.4; however it does not have the option "Init display first: PCI/AGP". The only time I got it to work was on an older board that had this option, and it only worked when PCI was chosen. Then, WinXP automatically initialized the AGP board after bootup. But without it, only the AGP card gets initialized at all times.
Thank you very much in advance.
