Two-way video chat with other (audio-only) participants?

Is it possible to have a five-way chat in iChat with
. - myself and one other participant via video, and
. - three other participants via audio only?
I know there's an option for one-way video conferencing, where only one person in a conference has video and the other(s?) have audio, but what about two with video and the others with audio?
And if we did this, could the three audio participants see the two video participants even if the three don't participate via video?

Hi,
You can start A One Way Video chat with a Buddy without a Camera.
You can add others up to the standard 4 people (you and three others) and some can be audio Only.
You do have to have a Mac of a G4/1Ghz dual or above and have a Upload speed of 256 k at the very Least (Apple Specs say 384k) although more is preferable when you are Host.
Ideally the Host should be the fastest Mac with the fastest connection.
Invite Camera able Buddies first then Audio Only Buddies by clicking on the green A/V icon they are showing in the Buddy list.

    HELP PLEASEEE!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
    Scenario 1
Next to your Own Buddy icon at the top of the Buddy list your own Video icon should be "Stacked" if you can do Multi-way Video Chats.
As Audio chat take less bandwidth it is implied you can do Multi-way Audio Chats.
If your Icon becomes a single "Flat" one then so will your Buddies as you will only be able to Video Chat to them one at a time.
If you can Multi-way Chat but a Buddy can not (most likely a AIM on PC Buddy) then they will show a "Flat" iCon.
    Resized "Flat" pic
    Resized "Stacked" pic
    Scenario 2
However these icons appear in a group at the bottom of the Buddy List, and are dark like this when a Buddy is highlighted.
From what you posted I am not entirely clear which part you are talking about.
I would rather be clear before we proceed.
Can you start though with a plain Shut down and reboot of the computer and then start up iChat ?
This will get iChat to recheck the Bandwidth (portion of your Internet Connection) it can "See" and it may do better now the other computer is not doing a Video chat.

  • One-Way Video Chat with Windows User

Hi - I have tried several times to begin a one-way video chat with someone using windows XP and AOL 9.0 (I have an iSight and iChat 4.0). She says that it says "connecting" for a long time but nothing happens. I came across the following website yesterday but have not tried any of its tips yet because of their complexity: http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service
I was wondering if it is possible to have a one-way video chat with a windows user if they don't have a camera or a microphone. If not, is it possible to have a one-way audio chat?
    Sam

I think your PC pal will need a microphone for one-way video to work, Sam.

  • One Way Video Chat with an AIM user

Hey......im wondering if there is a way to one way video chat with AIM users........(using aol instant messenger)ive tried a few times, but it says "data not recieved for 10 seconds" and the one way video chat stops....im wondering if this can be fixed?

    Hi Bruce,
    This is possible.
It seems though, that for some that they come across the problem you describe.
I do not have any definite answers but I don't get the problem but I have run the "Tuning" on the PC end even though it does not have a camera or Mic.
I am not sure if this is the Fix or just coincidence.
The problem was more common at iChat 3.0 and 3.0.1 and is related to the amount of data that iChat percives it is getting. Strangely t was by sending files we found out what the problem was/is.
When files are sent the Video is paused whilst this happens. In the conenction Doctor you can see a Mac to MAc chat drop to a Bitrate of 24kbps. In A Mac to PC the bitrate does not stop at 24kbps and continues down to 0 (Zero). When this is 10 sec old then the chat is eneded with the error message.
If you have not already try updating to 10.4.3 as this was supposed to adress the problem.
    Ralph

  • In future Iphone4 will support video chatting with other Mobile phone

    Hi ,
Whether iphone4 will allow video chatting with other Mobile phones like Nokia,Samsung,etc..,in future kindly clarify

Apple already announced, as an earlier poster stated, that they have made the FaceTime spec/protocol available to anyone who wants to use it. Apple doesn't have to do anything.

  • Two way video chat possible with osmf?

We are looking to add a 2 way video chat to our chat system (web based) using flash.  Would osmf be able to link the two live webcams together?  If not, could someone suggest something?
Our chat's are currently written in Php using ajax.  We're looking to create flash/swf version with video and trying to figure out what will reside between the two video connections?
    Best,
    Mike

OSMF doesn't currently have support for camera-based video (though Flash does).  Would be good to add as a feature request though...

  • One-way video chat with iSight on Mac to PC via AIM

I recently bought an iSight camera for my powerbook G4. I am having trouble getting a video chat connected to my friend who is using AIM 5.5 on his PC. I am using AIM 4.7 for macintosh. Are there any tips on getting a one way video chat started?? he doesn not have a webcam

    Hello Ivy,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your PC pal should upgrade to the current AIM 5.9. If fixes some of 5.5's problems.
AIM for Mac has no video (or audio) capability). More info in the MSN, Yahoo, Win Messengers & iChat? FAQ.
See Using iSight with iChat AV for info on how to use your iSight for video chat.
Then, see Mac Video Chat with PCs for info on making video connections with PCs.
For more information on one-way video, search your Mac's
    b iChat > Help > iChat Help
for "one-way video" (without the quotation marks).
The requirements for one-way video are the same as for two-way video except for one camera.
One-way video between an iSight-equipped Mac and a correctly configured PC is possible for most users. However, some users report that they can just NEVER get it to work. We do not know why that is. Adding any compatible USB webcam to the PC system (and "tuning" correctly after the addition) should let you make video connections if you are one who cannot make it work without a camera.

  • Can't start One-Way Video Chat with some Buddies

I have a MacBook running the latest version of iChat AV 3 (3.1.5 v440).
I just held a video chat with my father. He's also using the latest version of iChat.
Quitting that video chat, I also wanted to video chat with my mother in law. She's also running the latest version of iChat (on her non-intel mac: 3.1.5 v436). However, in my Buddy list, she shows up with a greyed out icon for the multi-chat. My audio and video chat buttons disable when I select her. There is no "Invite to One-Way Video Chat" menu.
We have both restarted our computers. We're both listed as Buddies of the other. No luck. My father shows in the buddy list as available for video chat, my mother in law does not.
I've previously been able to video iChat with her. What's going on?

5 minutes after posting, my wife noticed that one of the other computers in the house (with a different .Mac account on it) was 'ringing'. Apparently my mother-in-law had left an open audio chat invitation to another account, and that was preventing a new chat from starting. Sorry for the noise, hopefully this answer helps someone else.

  • Can't Video Chat with other .mac user

Been trying to video chat with a buddy. We both have .mac and AIM accounts. We are able to text when logged into AIM. Attempts to video chat can't connect.
Is this a problem because we are using our AIM accounts?
I'm tried logging in with my .mac account but it always shows I'm off-line in my buddy list. Can't seem to make it go online.
    Thoughts?
    Ed

    Hi BlackGuns,
    Welcome to the  Discussions
It should not matter if you use an AIM Screen Name or an @mac one.
If you have an @mac one the Password should be 16 characters or less.
When you add a Buddy the top drop down allows you to specify the account name type.
Neither requires that you add a Suffix as the @mac ones are added by iChat.
    See here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page6.html
Most likely it is spelling or Account type error

  • Can I do a 3 way video chat with two iMac users and 1 PC user?

    Hi,
I'm due to have a video conference in a few days and I suddenly realized that one of us has a PC and two of us have iMacs. If the PC user were to get AIM, would it be possible for her to communicate with the two of us and can the two of us communicate with and see her? We live in 3 separate areas so we will be using three separate computers. If it is possible to do this, what do we all need to do? Also, I have iChat 5.0 and the other iMac user has whatever came with Tiger. I have done three way video conferences before without a problem but we've all had iChat. Thanks in advance.
    Judy

    Hi
Wont work with a PC in a 3 way in iChat.
Have a look at TokBox http://www.tokbox.com/view/about
    And browser based MeBeam http://www.mebeam.com/

  • Audio/video chat works but audio only doesn't

Audio-video chats (both 2-way and one-way) work, but audio ONLY chats don't work (connection error). One machine is running 10.4.2 and the other 10.3.9. Doesn't seem like this would be a firewall or bandwidth issue if AV chats are working fine. Why would this happen?

I have the same issue, as well as the other iChat issues on other posts. When our offices (SF area & LA area, CA, US) were on 10.3.9, no problems with audio or video chats (we all have AIM screen names). Then the boss upgraded to 10.4.1. He could a/v chat with anyone inside our network and could video (with sound) with the other office, but not audio only. When he is at home he could a/v with anyone. We upgraded one more computer in our office to 10.4.1 and it was able to audio chat to other Tiger machines outside the office, but not Panther machines (can chat with anyone inside too). Now the boss and I have upgraded these same machines to 10.4.2 and the audio chat doesn't work outside the office anymore and we still can't chat with Panther machines outside the office.
Our office has Netopia Cayman 3546-002 ADSL Broadband Gateway on SBC Yahoo DSL at 4936 kbps down/493 kbps up. I called Netopia and had them help me open up the ports (I had them look at the apple tech document so they could help me get it right). It has NAT enabled and all the computers on this LAN have static addresses. Most of the computers access the LAN through the airport express (which just bounces the signal from the wired side). I think we have port forwarding or mapping set up for our two servers...the router looks at the address from the WAN side and routes it to the address on the LAN side. Firmware is up to date on the router.
I did not originally set up this network and have spent much time reading the user manual for the modem/router (it's a combo device) and trying suggestions here and from Level 2 at Apple. They say it is our network, but I don't know how to fix it.
I don't think this router has any UPnP capability, that I could find in the manual. Also what is SIP? I need a description of it or at least what that acronym stands for. Also, I've seen stuff about using the Terminal to change the telenet port. This routers telenet is set to 23, that should be fine for iChat, right? No conflict?
Please help this tortured soul!! Thanks.

  • I can't video chat with other people.

    I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro (w/ out Retina).
So when I can use Messages just fine, and chatting with people and all that, but when I try to video chat other people, the invites don't show up, and I can't send invites either.

    Hi
    Not enough info.
The iMessages account and any Yahoo Account you have set up will not Video or Audio Only chat.
This means only Buddy Lists logged in to AIM (AIM or Apple Valid IDs as Screen Names)  or Jabber Logins (Could include Google talk or Facebook IDs) can Video.
Certain Apple IDs ending in @mac.com, @Me.com and @icloud.com are also valid AIM Screen Names thanks to an agreement Apple and AIM have.
This mean your Apple ID may be used in the iMessages account and be added (Messages menu > Preferences > Accounts > Plus icon lower left) as an AIM account.
This will create a Buddy list although by default they are not on show.
GO to the Window Menu and click on the "Buddies" item (CMD + 1 keystrokes)
This is a combined list of all the Buddy Lists you have logged in to the servers (plus possibly the Bonjour account).
In the general Section of the Preferences is a line about Gathering all Accounts in to one list. Untick this item.
The Buddy list will separate out and the Window Menu will list as many CMD + # as you have Buddy lists (well up to nine)
As you can see I have more than nine Accounts logged in.
My original AIM Name, two Apple ID types based on my iCloud registration (they are in fact the same Apple Account but here they work as separate IDs), Googletalk, a Jabber ID and a Yahoo one at least plus the Bonjour account.
As I said Yahoo does not Video where as an AIM Login does
Showing two accounts/Buddy Lists (no Video icon in the Yahoo one)
If you are in the main Messages window and have started a New Message and either used the blue + icon that shows Up and then the Contacts List or typed a Name in the "To" spot you are most like iMessaging someone  (see the text entry field at the Bottom of the window).
The Video icon that shows up top right will invoke FaceTime to Video  (Starts up the other app to Video)

  • IChat 4 under 10.5.1 - cannot one-way video chat

I have lost the ability to one-way video chat with other people in iChat. This worked previously.
    Any ideas how to correct?

Yes, absolutely, after the upgrade to 10.5.1 it all stopped working for me too. There's a ton of threads about people having problems doing audio or video chats after the update in the Leopard forums, so there's clearly some kind of problem.

  • New computer, new camera -- can't video/audio chat with other mac users

I just got an ibook G4 a few months ago and just got an external iSight. My friend has an older iMac (the round, colored kind) and an iBot webcam. We had been able to do one-way video chats with my previous computer as well as audio chats. I can't get either to work now. The camera is on and I can see myself. I click on her camera icon and it says connecting, but then fails. Same thing when I try t do audio chats with her. Any ideas?

    Hi
Have you set the Quicktime settings, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed set what you get from your ISP go no higher then 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
    Restart iChat.
