A reset may help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.

2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port

DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...

1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

Today October 26th I was prompted for 8.1 upgrade to fix minor bugs. Did 8.1 upgrade on my iphone 4S, phone went to recovery mode and lost all data. Apple doesn't care if you buy a newer phone or not. Apple doesn't need your new iPhone purchase. There are millions of people that have properly working older iPhones that voluntarily upgrade.
Your device crashed, and it could have been caused by any number of root causes, many of them not controlled by Apple. Third party app, interruption of internet connection, interruption of power, etc.

Then you have no data from which to backup, I'm afraid.
This would be a good time to review the User Guide and learn how to use your phone as recommended so data loss like this doesn't happen again.

Same here. I tried to update my iPhone 5S and iPad 4 to 7.1 but iTunes wiped out them. This thing already happened for iOS 7.0.6 update. What happened to Apple? I am really curious whether Apple is aware of this problem.

I tried uppdating my ipad then it went into recovery mode. I thought "oh no problem, my phone has done this before". So, I hooked it up to iTunes and started to restore/update it, but when the update began, it said it would take 24 hours to download. Already abnormal. Then, the number kept rising higher and higher until it got to 300 HOURS. I downloaded 5 to my itunes. When I tried to update my iPad 2 it extracted the informaion and then when it tried to restore the iPad, I got an error message saying that my iPad malfunctioned, it went into recovery mode, and it would not restore.

When I downloaded (on PC) the new 5 it crashed my iPad 2. I worked for two days to get it to stop the malfuction, went to the apple store for four hours, iPad crashed again, got a new one, new iPad crashed when I tried to restore my back up. You seam to be focusing your anger at Verizon and not your sister. Verizon followed the rules and required IDs and passwords to access the wireless account.
