Two workflow questions, (1) importing and (2) saving/exporting

Apologies if the below questions are too elementary. I've just started using Lightroom. I've been trying out various editing/organizing programs and I haven't yet found the perfect one. Can someone tell me if Lightroom is capable of the following:
1. I shoot in Raw+Jpeg format. When I copy images from my camera to my computer, I always create a new folder that represents my event and put the jpegs in \Pictures\[Event]\ and the raw images in \Pictures\[Event]\Raw\. Is there a way to instruct Lightroom to perform this function through the import module, i.e. have a single import event that copies jpegs in an \...\[Event]\ folder while copying dng to \...\[Event]\Raw\ and importing only the dng files into my Lightroom catalog. Is this possible?
2. Also, can someone explain how Lightroom handles edits? Say I've edited a dng in my library. Is the dng file changed on my computer itself? How about the jpeg (remember, I copy jpeg+dng to my computer)? Is there a way to instruct Lightroom to automatically (i.e. default behavior) overwrite the jpg file when any changes are made to the dng file, but prevent the dng file from being overwritten? What about instances where I also want to overwrite the dng - how do I accomplish this?

Lightroom has no feature to overwrite your JPGs automatically.
Might I suggest a workflow change ... shoot raw only, when you need a .jpg, have Lightroom export one for you.
If Lightroom handled Face/Places/Sharing well, I wouldn't need to mess with a second program (i.e. Picasa), but right now it doesn't look like it can handle what I want. I understand that I can use Metadata/Keyword tags to identify People and Places, and that there are plug-ins to upload to Picasa web albums, but these options aren't executed well enough in LR3 for me to give up Picasa. The plug-in doesn't work nearly as cleanly as the native Google program, and "Faces" is a chore in Lightroom. Picasa can automatically detect faces and makes tagging/organizing/working with images much easier. While I'm on the topic, can anyone explain why such a useful feature (that's available on free and basic image software) is not included in Lightroom? Is there any possibility that it'll be included in the final version of LR3? What about the upcoming Aperture 3? Is it that "Faces" is perceived as a basic consumer feature that isn't used in higher-end software? Will this always be excluded from this "class" of software?
Using LR3 Beta to decide whether the software works the way you want isn't a good idea. I'm guessing, but I don't know for sure, that the uploading to Picasa will work a lot better in the finished product. Hard for me to imagine a program being easier to tag/organize than Lightroom, and while I don't use Picasa, I can't see how it could be easier in tagging and organizing. It is my opinion (and you might think differently) that using two different organizing software programs on your photos is more trouble than it is worth, especially since you have to constantly "synchronize" the two different organizers.
No one here works for Adobe, and even if there was someone here from Adobe, they can't tell you what will be in future releases. We can only guess, and we don't know.
Finally, can you explain xmp? I've done some keyword tagging on my images within Lightroom. If I were to later use another program, would the keywords be picked up? From your explanation it sounds like there are two aspects to a file, the image section and the xmp section. Is the xmp section the part that includes information about the photo? I.e. settings, metadata, etc.??
Keywords that Lightroom writes to xmp should be readable by almost every other photographic application. But please be aware that Lightroom, by default, does not write keywords to the photo files. You have to specifically tell Lightroom to do so, by either turning on an option, or by using Ctrl-S on selected photos. Xmp includes all the metadata, which includes captions, keywords, Lightroom edits, and basically any information supplied by the user rather than by the camera.

Two problems with video: Import and gamma

I downloaded and tried LR4 today and found the new adjustment features quite impressive. I was also very eager to try the new video facilities. Woudl have loved to...
Running on iMAC with Lion, pictures and video from a Pentax K5. Video is full HD @25fps. Never had any problems in LR3.6 with importing or cataloging my videos.
When I tried to import already downloaded photos and videos two things happend:
First, some of the videos are not in their "correct" position in grid view, while others are correct. In finder date and filename are correct.
Second and more complicated, videos are completely off in colors and play with interruptions. I attached of few screen shots of what it looks like in LR3.6 and LR4.
Any ideas?

p.s. just tried direct import from camera, with the same effect, at least regarding colors and slow video replay.

did not get a PM yet. After trying with several other sources I finally found the "mistake" after installing and trying LR4 on my MBP. The reason for the color shift is that I switched on the development preset Auto tone, which for video gives this crazy results. Other presets work just fine, even giving a warning that some of the adjustments might not apply in video. Auto Tone and the video is off.

Workflow question; planner user and approve?

We are testing our planning application and we discovered that a user with a planner role can approve his/her planning unit ??? He/She can choose from promote/approve when changing status of of selected enity (with write access).
Is this a normal feature or has something gone wrong?
Planner users are provisioned in Shared Services with following Planning roles: Planner, mass allocation, offline user. In Planning they have write access to their own entities and read access to some other entities related to their own business areas. They have write access to all accounts, some scenarios and so on. Read access is given to some scenarios and as said to some entities.
Within business rules they have an Interactive user role. Those planners belong to different native groups that have "validate or launch" access to specific Business rules. I suppose Business Rules should not have effect on this..
Somehow I would think that Planner should not have an approve option when changing status of his/her entity (with write access). The approve option should belong to admins (my humble opinion).

I believe you may be able to change this behavior, althought unfortunately, I don't have access to a Planning repository right now to confirm.
There are two tables in the repository that define the actions and states of Workflow in Hyperion Planning. They are:
- HSP_PM_ACTIONS
- HSP_PM_STATES
This is where you can modify (or add new) workflow actions and states. I seem to remember a field in these tables that defines who can take a specific action. There's another field that defines who the next potential owners are after a given action. Unfortunately, I'm recalling this from memory, so you'll have to do a little digging. The fields use a code, so you'll have to decifer what those codes mean too.
Remember, after any changes to the repository, you'll need to restart the Planning services.

The fiirt two data guard instances are built. One is running fine the second I'm getting this error in the primarys alert log. it looks like it is a certificate error but I'm having a hard time nailing it down.

The third and final data guard instance I'm building is 3T and taking forever to restore. Two questions:
1) Can I suspend rman and restart it.
2) when I restart rman how do I keep it from prompting me for the password. I would prefer to put a nohup on a shell script.

Two iPhone questions (existing customer and data plan)

Hello, I have two questions about the iPhone. I am on a family plan with At&t. I don't pay my bill. I want to keep it that way. Will I just be able to take my sim card out of my phone and put it in the iPhone since it's AT&T? Or do I use a new sim card and when activating it choose existing customer?
My second question is I am wondering if it is possible to use an iPhone without the data plan. I know I will be missing visual voicemail and edge but I don't care. Also, will this make me get a thousand dollar bill if I accidentally press safari and don't have a data plan? Thanks.

You can't use the SIM from your existing phone. You would use the new SIM and activate as an existing customer.

You have to get the data plan and for $20 it's worth it, not only is it unlimited data but includes 200 text messages. Without the data plan, you'll pay for every voicemail you access, every text message, any time you check weather/email/youtube/etc. In a nutshell, the data plan covers a lot more than just using Safari to browse the web.

Best practice question re. importing and scratch drive

Hello:
Will be editing .mov files primarily (Panasonic TM900 files wrapped as ProRes 422HQ - via ClipWrap). I'm using an external scratch drive.
Questions:
1. is it best to "copy" the files to the project as is the default check mark or uncheck and save disk space?
2. on the scratch drive, I currently have the original .mts files and then a new folder with the wrapped files. Is it better to keep these on the main HDD or is it ok to be on the scratch drive as well. Thnaks.

Yes read your manual to understand more but here is a clip:
Create proxy media: This option creates video and still-image proxy files. Video is transcoded to the Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy) codec format, which provides high-quality files useful for offline editing at the original frame size, frame rate, and aspect ratio. Final Cut Pro creates medium-quality (one-quarter resolution) proxy versions that increase editing performance. Video proxy files take up considerably less disk space, which often means you can work on a portable computer instead of a desktop computer that has significantly more memory and processing power. Still images are transcoded to either JPEG (if the original file doesnʼt have alpha channel information) or PNG files (if the file has alpha channel information). Still-image proxy files facilitate faster processing and rendering when the original image is very large.
Note: When transcoding files, Final Cut Pro always retains the original media for future use. For more information about where to find original media, proxy media, and transcoded media files, see Where your media and project files are located.

Two EO questions (dynamic attrs and validation)

Hello all (I really hope Steve M gets to see this),
I am re-visiting an old project (fantasy) of mine to implement spell checking of certain fields in an Entity Object, The concept is that I will implement the spell checking in an overriden validateEntity method. The way I would like this to work is for spelling errors to be reported to the user when they try to commit; if the user commits again without making any changes, I will assume they want to ignore the spelling errors and will allow the Entity to commit. In order to implement this in a really cooI and generic way, Ineed to be able to do a couple of things that have really stumped me.
The first is in relation to entity validation. The doc states that any EO is assumed to be valid after it is read from the database. Is there any way that I can alter this behaviour so that the EO needs to be re-validated even if it has just been read from the database? Extra credit if this can be done in such a fashion as to not cause the EO's data to be re-posted to the database if the user doesn't make any changes. I have tried over-riding lots of things in the EntityImpl and EntityDefImpl, but I cannot find the right place to do this.
The second thing I would like to do is to add dynamic attributes to an EO instance. The reason I want to do this is so that I can add the spell check code in a generic framework extension class and not have to modify each EO for this behaviour. The attribute I want to add is used to track whether spell checking has already been done on the EO row. I cannot use a java class member variable, as the same instance of the java class is not necessarily used across different web requests - in fact, I have found that the same instance is rarely-to-never re-used in my testing. I can make this work by adding a transient attribute to the EO itself, but this defeats my goal of a generic implementation. I have found some methods in EntityImpl (setDynamicAttributeValue and getDynamicAttributeValue), but they don't appear to do what I want. I've also played around a bit with the EntityDefImpl, but no luck there either.
I do promise to post a blog entry detailing how to do this if this pans out. We have looked at some nice JavaScript-based spell checkers that work well (give suggestions in a pop-up window), but we would like multiple fields on a web page to be spell-checked, and this is difficult to do with those spell-checkers (particularly when you have an af:table with varying number rows).

Your mechanism to manage css style classes is a good approach; I have used that many times. I do wonder why the style classes were implemented as a list, instead of a set, but there may be good use cases for using a list.
In some cases you can also consider using CSS PsuedoClasses, which were introduced in JavaFX 8. These are a bit easier to use, especially if you have only two options. But a use case might look like:

Two noob question about unstable and abs

1. abs is just a bash script using cvsup IIRC. Take a look at it (as well as /etc/abs/abs.conf).

Workflow question re: Livetype and Soundtrack

I'm trying to organize myself for a project and I don't know whether to add/mix my music in FCE or Soundtrack, or, should I bother with titling and text effects in FCE or do it all in Livetype.
Is there a right way to do this?

Just words for thought:
FCE Title 3D is a very good titler. Livetype gives you the ability to animate titles, use backgrounds, more titling effects etc. My projects combine both; if I just need straightforward titles and title rolls (I dont like the LT scroll) I use Title 3D. If I need titles that are more customized and dynamic, I use LT
I do most of my audio in FCE; mixing various tracks together, common EQing, etc. If I get some real funky audio that needs heavy correcting, I use SoundTrack. If I need some original BG music, I use ST
Personally, I find LT easier to use from within FCE, I like the integration better. Create the title in LT, save the LT project, open that in FCE and if I need to make changes, use the Open in Editor function
I find ST a little clunkier to use but I don't employ it as often, so I am sure I am not taking full advantage of its integration

Question for Sue and others - Problems exporting back to Mini DV tape

This is a very interesting concept that you have mentioned in another of your posts:

Instead of exporting to the camera, "Share" your iMovie video as a QuickTime Full Quality DV
Import this QT movie into a NEW iMovie project.
Then export (share) that to your camcorder.
It does take time to convert the imovie to QuickTime, but in the end it should work."
I have a similar problem where that when I want to back up by edited movie back to mini DV tape, there might be the occasional 'dropped frame' or image break up that appears from time to time on my back up tape. This then renders this back up useless for my purpose. Currently I select 'share' and then 'video camera' to perform this action. Sometimes I think that its Imovie's fault that these errors occur and sometimes I blame the video camera - who knows?!! One thing I do notice is that when looking at the video transferring from Imovie to Video tape, any error wont show on the Imovie window, but will show on the video camera flip out screen. I wonder if it means that it is the video camera's fault?
Do you think that your process might cure this problem?

In addition to Sue's great advice, another method of exporting to your camera may solve your problem - a method which I always use with success. In iMovie's Preferences (Menu>Preferences), check the box "Play DV project video through to DV camera". Set your camera to the VCR (Play) position and simultaneously click the Play button in iMovie and the Record button on the camera (or camera remote).
After exporting to tape, it's best to then un-check the Preferences box, as leaving it checked can sometimes mute the audio playback in iMovie in some versions.
The quality of the export is identical to that using the "Share" feature in iMovie. It may also help to set the iMovie Preference for Playback to "Standard (smoother motion)" and to ensure that, in the Timeline, "Show Clip Volume Levels" and "Show Audio Waveforms" are not activated (go to the View menu for these or Control-Click on the audio track/s). The less iMovie has to worry about, often the smoother the playback. Please note that the Playback preference has no effect on the quality of the export - it's only a setting for playback on the monitor.

Import and Update PDF Export Preset

Hey there again!
I'm now trying to define a preset for the PDF Export process... it's based on the "High Quality Print" (from the Adobe PDF Preset list), and then I want to change "one or two" parameters.
Changing one or two parameters is easy, I've been doing that already, but since most of them are already defined by the "High Quality Print" Preset, my idea was:
Load the "High Quality Preset"
And after that change the required parameters
And then export to PDF of course!
How can this be done?

When looking at your code you have to use the right syntax.
Every time you assign a value to a property you have to use the right object that property belongs to.
Some values are only functional, if some other property is set (this goes especially for the bleed settings).
Do not write:
bleedTop='0mm';
ExtendScript cannot know by itself where this property and its value should be assigned to what object.
Right syntax would be:
myPDFExportPreset.bleedTop='0mm';

IMovie: whats the fastest way to import and save all original media?

Good afternoon. Ok I need help please. Is there a way to simply take all the imported original media and just save it all in one fell swoop? Rather than having to import and then process/export clip by clip.
I thought I had a quicker way just grabbing all the original media from the imported camera (right clicking imovie library > show package contents > original media) untill I tried to play one of the original media files - no sound and it was mov file. I assume mp4 is better???
I have 2800 hours of video I need to import off my camera. I don't need to modify them at all, aside from the occasional combining of clips into one movie. So I need the fastest way. Importing and then exporting clip by clip will take me forever. I would prefer to just import and then just drag all 50 clips or so into my movies folder. But as stated above that does not seem to work as expected unless I'm missing a step.

I would suggest that you migrate to SAP GTS 8.0 - because without that you have no standard functionality available for any Inward Processing. And in my eyes it makes no sense to build a custom made report for a functionality that is available in a standard SAP product.... ?!
Have a look at the online help - maybe that helps you to get a better understanding about the GTS 8.0 standard for Inward Processing...

Two questions on SP1 and Vista booting

Hi all,
two questions:
1) did I understand correctly that if I want SP1 on my machine I have to install it manually, as it is not included in the automatic update routines?
2) my machine failed yesterday, I got a message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause." The only thing I can think of is that before switching it off the previous time, I had inserted a USB hard-drive to copy some files on it. But I had continued working on the machine normally. The other unusual event is that the day before it was very slow booting up, so afer it finished booting up, I restarted it.
When the system failed to start, I tried the automatic procedures several times, which always ended up with "windows cannot solve the problem automatcally,
contact your vendor". In the penultimate attempt, I also clicked on an "advanced option tab" and restored the system, but that also did not solve the problem. Then, this morning I switched the machine on again to write down the exact error message I got, and instead, unexpectedly (and rather gladly), the machine started up normally. So, what might have happened? Should I get my machine (which is less than a month old) checked?

Yes, theres a chance to have a complete image from the actual state of your operating system including all programs etc....
There are several solutions:

3. The Free one: http://www.ubcd4win.com/
(but more complicated and you need in all cases a external data storage, there are some tools on this ToolsCD which are free and do almost the same like acronis or ghostimage)
I guess there are still thousands of cloning programs but I tried to give you the most important and most reliable tools.
If I were you, I would check the UBCD4Win, burn it to a CD, buy an external HDD, start the UBCD4WIn and clone your drive to the external one. So you can perform incremental backups of your HDD and if something happens, you must only do the whole process like you perform the backup just reverse.

Two issues, Question mark and Chinese

Issue #1 - When I go to a URL such as the Apple.com location, OT files such as the iPhone (drool) currently featured don't appear. Instead I get a semi transparent QT logo with a Question mark superimposed over it. Same goes for QT files that are emailed to me as attachements.
Issue #2 - When I click on the QT icon on my dock I get a small window that pops up titled "Welcome to Quick Time" and if clicked linking me to a QT promo which, consistent with issue #1 will not load. Quick Time opens but other than the name of the application in bold, all other words are in what I assume is Chinese.
These two issues seem to have cropped up simultaneously, though I can't say for sure. How do I reset the language that QT is displayed in? Particularly when I can't read any menu/toolbar items in QT?

Thanks for your assitance Jon, unfortunately I'm no closer to resolving this. The QT and VLC are both in the Applications folder, should this not be the case?Was not referring to applications here but the browser plug-ins in the "~root > Library > Internet Plug-Ins" folder. If there is a browser plug-in conflict, this is where you would start to look for it.
As for the language issue, I checked International and found Chinese to be second under English in the list. I moved Spanish up to second to see the result and QT is now in Spanish. I moved Spanish to first position and English to second and all of my Apps etc were in Spanish including QT! I put English back on top and all are just that except QT which is still in Spanish. So evidently QT has developed a distaste for English?This seems to confirm that your problem is connected to the language list -- or rather how QT has indexed and is accessing the list. It is obviously off by one index and if QT is the only application affected, would assume it most likely the application is corrupted. Unfortunately, as embedded as it is in the current system, the best solution might be to reinstall the OS. On the other hand, if you can wait for the next upgrade, I was wondering you could get temporary relief by simply placing "English US" at the top of the list and use "English" as the second entry. At least you could read the menus.
One other question....I was planning on upgrading to Quick Time Pro, will downloading this fix my problem?No, QT Pro merely unlocks editing/saving/exporting features.
Can I delete QT and then start over with a download of QT Pro?QT Pro is not a separate application. With previous versions of QT, I might recommend removal and re-installation of QT. But with the current "tight" integrations of QT/OS I personally would worry about creating more problems than I would solve.
