Two WRT54GL off HughesSatellite Modem: sudden problems!

Greetings, I have been running - very successfully - a dual router setup off a HughesNet satellite system (standard plan, no static address) to operate distinct wireless networks in my business. All thanks to the generous, patient, and irreplaceable assistance of Forum advisers here and elsewhere! The whole thing has worked EXTREMELY WELL for over one year! Basic (cascading/piggybank router connection) setup: HughesSatellite doing DHCP on 192.168.0.* subnet >> WANport ROUTER 1 LANPort >>> WANPort Router 2 Router1 (Stock WRT54GL Off HughesNetModem) is set as "AutoConfigDHCP" . Local LAN IP: 192.168.2.250. Delivers IP addresses to wireless users (Wireless Network No 1) on 192.168.2.10 to 192.168.2.50. WPA encryptionned. Router2 (Stock WRT54GL Off Router1) is set to "Static IP" and affixed 192.168.2.245 as WAN IP (i.e. on same subnet as Router1). Local LAN IP: 192.168.3.245. Delivers IP addresses to wireless users (Wireless Network No 2) on 192.168.3.10 to 192.168.3.50. WPA encryptionned. Excellent thing: fair amount of independence between the two networks. namely, traffic on Wireless Network 2 is "invisible" to Wireless Network 1 (that's what I needed!) SUDDENLY, 2 mornings ago (!): A. OK, Router2 (Off Router1 below) and corresponding Wireless Network 2 still works OK. Router blinking at all times, etc... B. BUT Router1 (Off HughesSat Modem to WAN port on the Router1) totally unpredictable and basically not delivering Wireless Network 1 traffic reliably, as follows: 1. I use NetStumbler (Win) and iStumbler (Mac) on my dual OS MacBookPro. I can sometimes SEE that Router 1 does seem to produce WiFi signal (especially if I am really close to the Router), with same strength as before according to xxStumbler. 2. BUT, PCs or MACs trying to connect to it usually DO NOT DETECT the signal, nor do they receive DHCP IPs from Router 1. In fact, they mostly NOT even detect the Wireless network 1 SSID (which is set at "Enable Broadcasting SSID" of course) among their perceived selection of available Wireless Networks. So, the WiFi signal is "there", but "not seen" or received (no IPs assignment). Meanwhile Router 1 does not do much "blinking". 3. EVEN if wireless PCs or MACs occasionally detect Wireless Network 1, they do not connect to it, or if they momentarily do, they quickly drop it. I'll leave it at that for now: i have tried to replace Router 1 with a fresh, brand new WRT54GL which I keep as a backup! To no avail. I have disconnected Router 2 from Router 1 (the one with the problematic Wireless Network 1). No improvement. Something new with HughesNet??? OR??? I hope this is all fairly clear! Thanks for reading this and perhaps any suggestion or help! - Roger T

Thanks a lot for your reply, forsaken. Also, what's your opinion on the following: I have tried to change channels re: router 1 and it seems that I have improved things by moving to another channel. Can Channel assignments be a top of the list concern re: wireless routers. We have a few other wireless operations nearby (as per iStumbler/Netstumbler). I wish I could sent you a screenprint of my Stumbler readings for you to guauge! I had my routers on Ch 1 and 11. I see a few other WiFi networks around at Ch 5 6 8. I just put my Router 1 on Ch 4 and things are considerably better... Go figure! - Roger T

  • Two Routers off One Cable Modem?

Can I run two routers off one cable modem, one a hardwired Windows network and the other an Airport Extreme networking a Powerbook G4 and wireless printer?

No you cannot - unless you pay your cable internet service provider for two public IP addresses.
What I would suggest if you already have the base station but have not yet purchased the router:
    - connect the cable modem to the Base Station's WAN port
    - buy a 4- or 8-port ethernet switch. Connect to the switch the LAN port of the Base Station, and all of your hardwired PCs
What I would suggest if you already have a router and base station:
    - connect the cable modem to the router's WAN port
    - connect all the hardwired PCs to the router's LAN ports
    - connect the Airport Base Station to one of the router's LAN ports, and configure the Base Station to function as a wireless access point per http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx/.59976caa

    Go to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration
Move all the files from the System Configuration folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. See if that made a difference.

  • Extremely slow internet... MAC's or modem's problem?!

My Macbook is only 1 week old, so I'm an absolute beginner at dealing with macs, please help! Thank you very much for reading
I have two houses, one with Verizon Fio modem (almost 1yr old), one with Verizon DSL (4-5yrs old), both with Linksys G Routers. The mac connects perfectly with Fio, yet when I go to my other house with DSL, everything went downhill.
When I first turn on the modem and the router, internet works fine for about 10 seconds, then it gradually slows down until I can no longer access internet. However, my family's Vistas and XP work just fine. I looked for solutions online, tried adding new DNS servers, tried turning off IPv6, nothing worked.
I called an Apple Expert, who told me to plug the modem directly into the mac. I turned off the modem + router, turned them on again, and connected the modem and the router to the mac, one at a time. At first my internet went back to normal speed, but after a while it slowed down again. I don't think connecting anything directly to the mac helped, the speed probably went back to normal just because I restarted the modem and the router.
According to the apple expert, the DSL has "gotten used to recognizing" the PCs, so when a new mac comes in, it cannot respond as well to it. He told me to call Verizon to get a new modem.
My dad is a computer programmer, and was quite doubtful of what apple told us. Over the past 5 years, the DSL has connected to 5-6 old and new PCs, but did not have any problems with them. If the modem really cannot respond well to new computers, then mine and my dad's 1 yr-old Vistas shouldn't work well with it, right? But they work perfectly fine.
Right now I have no idea what the problem is. It doesn't seem like the mac has any problem, because it connects well with other networks (as with the Fio). It doesn't seem like it's the modem's problem neither, because it connects fine with other old and new PCs.
I'm about to contact Verizon, but I'm very reluctant to get a new modem, especially when I'm not even sure if that's where the problem is...
    Please help...THANK YOU SO MUCH!

You were told pure hogwash by that "expert." Whoever it was knows nothing about computers. "Getting used to" indeed. Only in the movies.
My dad is a computer programmer, and was quite doubtful of what apple told us.
Your dad is smarter than that "expert"

The issue you have is typical - XP, Tiger etc all connect OK but Leopard does not. The usual fix is to update the router firmware. You say the router is 4-5 years old. I suspect that is the problem. You have to find out how to update the firmware. My old Verizon DSL router had the same issues until I updated the firmware, back when I first installed Leopard. It was a Westell modem and I needed to use my PC to update the firmware.
Check with your DSL ISP or go to the website of the modem/router manufacturer and get the instructions and download and install the firmware update. If this does not solve your problem, it will eliminate the main culprit. It's also possible that the router is simply too old, period.

  • HT1212 After working perfectly for two years my iTouch has suddenly stopped connecting to my Hub.  I have tried everything I can think of to get it working again but to no avail.  My desktop computer still works through the same hub

After working perfectly for two years my iTouch has suddenly stopped connecting to my Hub although my desktop computer still connects.  I have tried everything I can think of, including suggestions off Google/You Tube but nothing makes any difference.  Any ideas.  Surely it is not fit for the scrap heap after two years, but is clearly no use as it is.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

trying to buy more storage on the cloud, response is 'there was a problem - try again later' its been doing this over the last two hours - any ideas what the 'problem' is please (assuming its not me) - thanks

    Additional info on this:
I strongly suspect this is time machine-related. Even though time machine has been turned off, this happens at intervals of exactly one hour.
A single entry appears in the kernel log at the precise moment the (first) popup error box appears. This is:
    "AppleSRP started."
Anyone have any clue how to go about diagnosing or fixing this? I don't even mind trying something brute force (short of wiping the HD and reinstalling lion, which I really DON'T want to do; I don't mind a non-destructive reinstall).

  • My Lenovo ThinkStation D20 turn off all the sudden

I have a ThinkStation D20 which used to work for a quiet few months until it starts to power off all the sudden and now I am unable to use it b/c it happens frequently I do re installing windows cleaning each fans swiping one of the fan and still the problem is happening. Please any ideas?

    Hello,
I  also have same case recently, power-off suddenly when I using the D20 (around power-on 4 hrs then power-cut suddenly).
I have called the support center locally, that stated which may be the power supply problem, mother board problem or memory problem ?
I would like to learn from here that IF "memory problem" will cause power-off suddenly or will be blue screen ??
Or we should say that case by case ?
    Thanks & regards,

I recently deleted two albums off of my phone using itunes, but when i went back onto my phone, they were still there and playable. they are not songs that I have purchased via itunes so can someone please help me figure out what is wrong so that i can fix the problem

    Hi, Abril_Perez17.
This may be related to a new feature embedded in iOS7 that shows all purchased music by default.  Go to Settings > Music, then turn off Show All Music.  See if the issue ceases once the feature has been disabled.  This information is located on page 63 of the user guide below.

I am having a problem with the FireFox browser. I have attached two files that best describe the problem. I have labeled them A & B. A is the way it should look and B is what happens after I have I opened several tabs. I can get it back to normal if I click on VIEW than click on customize. When the customize window appears FireFox returns to its normal state. I than click on the done box and go back to what I have been doing. I tried resetting FireFox back to default settings, but that did not correct the problem.
This began happening about a month ago. Is there a way I can fix this problem? Thanks for your help.I don't know how to attach my 2 attachments that shows the problem I am having.

  • Turning off 1 monitor causing problems?

first off i am trying to explain the situation as best as possible here so please ask if this doesnt make sense.
i have 2 LCD's hooked to the new Mini as such:
1 going mini display port to DVI adapter to DVI on 19" Monitor (standard monitor)
1 going mini DVI to DVI adapter to a DVI to HDMI on 52" LCD (Samsung TV)
i just sold me iMac and switched to the Mini not only to be able to hide the Mini which i couldn't do with the iMac but also when i watch a movie full screen on the 52 i was never able to turn off the iMac monitor and would have to cover it with a towel so that it was dark in the room except for the 52 showing the movie.
my thought was that with 2 monitors separately hooked up to the Mini that i could solve the turning off the second monitor problem as they would now both have power buttons. besides making it dark in the room i also like to have the monitor off and so that i can have Plex on the 52 always in full screen mode so my wife can just hit "Watch Plex" on the logitech remote and the TV and Stereo switch to the proper inputs and away she goes to watch whatever without having to touch the computer which when both monitors are on works perfectly.
    Scenario:
i have the 19 setup with the Dock and menu bar and the 52 as an extended desktop. this allows me to keep EyeTV and Plex full screen and still have full functioning OS on the 19 regardless of whether we are watching something or not. this also allows me to remote desktop in which is what i usually do from the macbook on the couch and enjoy the fullscreen movie or whatever and setup downloads or what have you on the second monitor. hope that made sense.
    Problems:
    1. when the 19 is connected to the mini-DVI port and 52 to the mini-Display port and a movie is going on the 52 and i go to turn off the 19 which is where i keep my menu bar and dock i get a stuttering movie on the 52 and when i turn the 19 back on it goes away. this happens regardless of whether the movie is running in Plex, VLC, etc.. or even if i am watching EyeTV.
    2. if i switch then around so that the 19 is on the mini-Display port and 52 on the mini-DVI port and turn off the 19 then i get the blue screen like you just plugged in a monitor and then i get my menu bar/dock on the 52 and loose the movie all together but still hear it. i have to reopen Plex or whatever to get it full screen on the 52 again but this negates my original plan to have the 19 with the dock/menu bar so that i can do other things while watching the 52 full screen as extended.
i appreciate anyone that took the time to read through this and could give me any possible solutions or idea on how to get this setup working the way i wanted it to.
    thanks

it is an Acer X193W and does have a sleep / power saving feature but it is activated by the computer which i think would be a problem.
the manual for the monitor says:
"The monitor will be driven into Power Saving” mode by the control signal from the display controller, as indicated by the amber-color power LED. The power saving states will be kept until a control signal has been detected or the keyboard or mouse is activated. The recovery time from Active OFF state back to ON state is around 5 seconds."
not sure how i could activate that sleep mode without affecting the other monitor?
    thanks

  • Serious and Sudden Problem with Z10 NEED HELP PLEASE

I have a z10, one of the first that came out in Toronto (if it makes a
difference), a couple of hours ago I came across a serious and sudden
    problem.
I was able to swipe left and right between pages of apps, even drop down
from the top, but I cannot open anything, not even make a call or settings
    options.
Any time I try to, for a split second it looks like its about to load
something then nothing. (image slides to the right quickly and goes back on
    every attempt)
So I first did a reset, same problem, then I did a battery pull (about 15 minutes) and problem presisted.
I tried through USB to do a backup on blackberry manager and perhaps do a
re-install of everything, however when I was prompted for the password of
my device on my PC it kept telling me it was an incorrect password (I use
this blackberry on my computer 4-7 days a week, twice a day sometimes for a
year and I have never miss typed my password nor have i changed it)
After trying everything to make sure the first letter maybe was upper/lower
case, even my other possible phone password, nothing worked..
On the 5th failed attempt my phone prompted me to type 'blackberry', which
i did, then i typed my password on my phone which i type in about 15 times
a day becuase I set my phone to a 5 minute lock and still said it was incorrect.... I am no on 9/10 attempts and lost
    for options.
Please if anyone can give me any suggestions, or even how to backup my phone
and whipe it now, or I have an earlier backup form 4 months ago that I
wouldnt mind going back to in worst case scenario.
Thank you for your help in advance,
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry, no I haven't experienced that. It could be from an app you downloaded but that's just a guess. Wiping the device will tell us a lot. If the device still doesn't work you'll want to reload the OS using BB Link. if it still doesn't work after that then warranty support will be necessary through Rogers.
