Tying MAC to static IP with WRT54GL router

Hi,
We are using a WRT54GL wireless router to connect 4 pc's to the internet. One of these pc's requires a static IP address since the router can only reliably do port-forwarding for static IP's (I would like to SSH to it and use it as a web-server). I was told that this router had this capability, but for the life of me I can't find it.
Would someone tell me how to do this? I am running the latest firmware (v4.30.11).
Thanks in advance for your reply,
Michiel

DD-WRT is pretty stable and well maintained. There are a lot of people using it and you get excellent support, if you don't mind some very technical answers at occasions. Generally, flashing unsupported firmware will void the warranty. But that would only be a problem if you had a bad flash. And even for a bad flash you often have options to recover the router.
For the static IP address on the computer change the network settings for the ethernet interface. I don't know Gentoo you should have administration GUI for that somewhere.
You can use the following values:
IP address (as mentioned before) e.g. 192.168.1.10
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway address 192.168.1.1
DNS server 192.168.1.1
As long as the static IP addresses do not create conflicts with the DHCP server address pool there won't be any issues running some static IP computers in the same LAN with DHCP clients.

  • Setting UP Static IP With WRT54G router

Setting a static IP shouldn't be a problem, since setting the static IP is done on the computer.  So why am I having such a problem?? Let me tell a little about my setup.
I have a DSL connection.  My DSL netopia modem uses PPPoe of course, and broadcast a DHCP connection to my WRT54G router.  3 computers are connected to this router. 1 desktop (vista) wired and 2 laptops (XP) wireless/wired. I'm attempting to create a static IP for the desktop and later for the laptops, but each time I do, I lose internet connectn nor am I able to connect to DSL modem at 192.168.1.254
Within the router I have changed the DHCP count to 5, with the starting IP as 192.168.1.1.  Linksys help advise to change IP to 192.168.2.1, but I still get the same problem when creating a static ip.
Within desktop (vista Home Premium SP1), I have changed the local area network to the following:
    IP          - 192.168.1.060
    Mac      - 255.255.255.0
    Gateway-192.168.1.1
    DNS      -192.168.1.1
Once I change the IP to above, from obtain auto, I lose the connection.
Later the laptops IP address will be changed to 192.168.070 and .080
Aren't static Ip address suppost to be outside the DHCP range?
Isn't the gateway address my router?
apoloize for the big questions, but tried to get all information within it.
     Thanks

Before doing this, In Windows go to run and type CMD hit enter. In the command prompt, type ipconfig /all and record your DNS server/servers if more than one. Not getting the proper DNS server information, will prevent you from going to websites like linksys.com by typing linksys.com in the address bar, instead you would have to know the IP of linksys.com to browse the page, not very user friendly and I can barely remember my phone number, let alone IP addresses of all the sites I go.
Log into your router. Leave your WAN settings alone, since that will determine your settings for the connection to the internet. Now configure your Network settings on the router. The 192.168.1.1  or 192.168.2.1 for the ip and leave the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 as is. Disable DHCP on the router. DHCP is a service that the router will use to issue out IP addresses automatically. This is the complete opposite of what you are trying to do with a static connection. Once these settings have been changed, you will need to configure the connection on the PC and any other connecting device to the router via wired or wireless since DHCP is now disabled. If not, you will just be stuck all day while the network adapter trys to get a network address and DHCP has a heart attack.
Configure your network adapters. Assign the IP address. If you used 192.168.1.1 then the IP will need to be 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 or if you used 192.168.2.1 the IP will need to be 192.168.2.2 through 192.168.2.254 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and enter the DNS server information as recorded from earlier. Default gateway will be whatever the IP address of the router you configured. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 etc etc etc.
Just remember to not duplicate any IP address when configuring other devices and all should work well.
This worked fine for me earlier today when I needed a static connection.

  • Problem connecting to internet with WRT54GL wireless router.

Hey fellas. I currently have a cable modem and a Linksys WRT54GL router with DD-WRT flashed connected to two computers. My desktop is wired to it, and I have a Windows XP and Mac OS X partition on my Macbook Pro, which uses the wireless connection. My PC is working fine, and the OS X partition on my Macbook Pro is running fine, but the XP partition is not doing too hot. Thing is, I have a connection to the router with an excellent signal strength, but Im getting BARELY any packets sent/received, if any. My settings are set to be assigned from the DHCP, but I can't seem to ping the assigned IP. I type ipconfig /all and everything seems to be in order - nothing abnormal to speak of, but I'm getting nothing For the record, I'm using WPA2 security. I'd really appreciate any help you guys can offer. I'm pretty tech-savvy so don't be afraid to use some more technical terms with me. Thanks in advance!

I think I should add that the windows partition does not seem to work when connecting to any other network, as well.

I need advise and help with this problem .
First , I have been with Mac for many years ( 14 to be exact ) I do have some knowledge and understanding of Apple product .
At the present time I'm having lots of problems with the router so I was looking in to some info , and come across one web site regarding : port forwarding , IP addresses .
In my frustration , amongst lots of open web pages tutorials and other useless information , I come across innocent looking link and software to installed called Genieo , which suppose to help with any router .
Software ask for permission to install , and about 30 % in , my instinct was telling me , there is something not right . I stop installation . Delete everything , look for any
trace in Spotlight , Library . Nothing could be find .
Now , every time I open Safari , Firefox or Chrome , it will open in my home page , but when I start looking for something in steed of Google page , there is
''search.genieo.com'' page acting like a Google . I try again to get raid of this but I can not find solution .
With more research , again using genieo.com search eng. there is lots of articles and warnings . From that I learn do not use uninstall software , because doing this will install more things where it come from.
I do have AppleCare support but its to late to phone them , so maybe there some people with knowledge , how to get this of my computer
Any help is welcome , English is my learned language , you may notice this , so I'm not that quick with the respond

Genieo definitely doesn't help with your router. It's just adware, and has no benefit to you at all. They scammed you so that they could display their ads on your computer.
    To remove it, see:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/
Do not use the Genieo uninstaller!

  • How to configure network printer with Linksys WRT54GL router network

I just bought a Linksys WRT54GL router and I am planning to build the following home-network around it:
    1. A desktop computer connected to router via ethernet cable (hard-wired).
    2. An HP Network Printer (Color LaserJet CM1312 MFP) connected to router via ethernet cable (hard-wired).
    3. A notebook connected to router via Wi-Fi.
I want both computers (desktop and notebook) to be able to share files, and also to share the same network printer.
    a. How do I do this?
    b. Do I need to install the printer drivers in both computers as if the printer was local for each one?
    c. What settings do I need to include in the Linksys router settings (and also the printer settings) to allow all this? I've read on the internet about DHCP configs, IP address, etc. but I hardly understand anything.
A step-by-step ("for dummies") explanation will be extremely appreciated.

You will need to install the printer driver on each computer that will be using the printer.  You will need to have a printer driver that is designed to be used on a network.   Many of HP's drivers (but not all of them) can be used for either a USB or a network connection.
Usually, when you use HP's printer installation software, it will walk you through the printer installation procedure, and install the printer drivers.  This software is normally located on a CD that came with the printer.  Some installation software demands that you setup a USB connection first, then switch to a network connection.  Other installation software might install a network connection directly.  Just follow the HP directions.
There are no special settings in the router.  Simply wire (using an ethernet cable) your printer to a LAN port on the router, when the installation software (or instructions) tells you to do so.
Your printer will likely get a different LAN IP address (192.168.1.x )  from time to time.  Some printer drivers can handle this and still work properly.  Other printer drivers get confused, and cannot find your printer when it changes addresses.  If your driver has this problem, then you will need to assign your printer a fixed LAN IP address.  This will force the printer to have the same LAN IP address each time you boot up your network.   If you need to do this, you will need to enter the LAN IP address directly into your printer (Sometimes this is done using the printer's buttons and display panel, and sometimes this is done using HP printer software).  Note that any fixed LAN IP address must be outside your DHCP server range (defaults are 192.168.1.100  thru  192.168.1.149 ) , and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.  If you need to use a fixed LAN IP address, I would suggest you use 192.168.1.13 , which should be easy to remember by looking at the model number of your printer.   If you need to use a fixed LAN IP address, you will also need to enter the Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway 192.168.1.1 , and DNS Server 192.168.1.1 , into your printer.   If you use a fixed LAN IP address in the printer, you do not need to change any settings in the router.  The router will automatically find your printer when you turn your printer on.   Even if your printer is using a fixed LAN IP address, your computers can continue to get their address automatically from the router's DHCP server.

    OK, let's try these................
1 - Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu.  When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer.  Re-connect your printer.
2 - Download & install the Gimp drivers. Make sure the one you install is compatible w/your OS-Gutenprint 5.2.8-pre1.   Repair permissions, restart your computer & re-connect your printer when done.
The Epson model I have, in order to get it to print wirelessly, I had to install a Gimp driver.
3 - Check out the following KB Articles:

    ======================
If still unsuccessful after trying all of the above, the problem could be your iBook or human error.  You can either call Epson & ask to speak with a Mac savy supervisor or return the printer & find another that is compatible w/your current OS.

  • WAG160N with WRT54GL in Client Mode Wireless disconnections

I have a problem with my WAG160N ADSL router. I installed DD-WRT on a Linksys WRT54GL router and run this router in client bridge mode. It connects with my WAG160N router using Wireless.
    My configuration is as follow:
    Firmware Version: 1.09
    Basic Wireless Settings:
    Network Mode: Mixed
Radio Band: Wide - 40MHz Channel
    Wide Channel: 5
    Standard Channe: 3
    Wireless Security:
    Security Mode: WPA-Personal
    Encryption: TKIP or AES
    Key Renewal 3600 seconds
    no MAC filtering
    Advanced Wireless Settings:
    Authentication Type: Shared Key
    All others default.
The WRT54GL is configured to only use AES encryption. In the beginning I had more dropouts of my wireless connection. The WRT54GL still displays it's connected, but I can't ping my WAG160N anymore. After I disabled QOS, the connection is retained much longer (for about 1 day). If the connection is dropped, it has no use to reboot the WRT54GL, the connection will still not be available. I have to reboot the WAG160N to reconnect again. I made a ping script that does a ping from my computer to the WRT54GL every second, and gives a message when connection is dropped. My computer is connected with my WAG160N router using a wire. I can see that the connection is really stable, with no dropouts at all. But at a certain time, there's no connection anymore.
If I view to log file of the WAG160N there's something that I notice, but I don't know how to solve it.
After I just restarted my router I get the following messages:

Above messages, I got originally when I still had my WRT54GL on TKIP, instead of AES, but I read that AES is preferred, because it's more reliable and quicker. After I configured the WRT54GL to only use AES I got the most above messages, but after a few hours the other messages (IEEE 802.1..) I have the feeling (haven't got hard proof yet) that at a certain point the port isn't authorised anymore (by using TKIP), but I'm wondering how that can be. I'm also wondering why all of a sudden the key renewal is in such a short time period. (Little bit more then 7 mins), while normally the renewal occurs every hour. I hope someone can help me using above description

Set these Wireless Settings on your WAG160N :
    Basic Wireless Settings:
    Network Mode: Mixed
Radio Band: Standard - 20MHz Channel
    Standard Channel:11
    Wireless Security:
    Security Mode: WEP...
    Advanced Wireless Settings

    Fragmentation Threshold : 2304
    RTS Threshold : 2304
Set your WRT54GL accordingly and see if they could stay connected...

  • No connection to the internet with WRT54GL

    Hi,
I have recently succesfully installed a WRT54GL router for my neighbours. Everything worked fine, however recently they asked me to install a small print server (Conceptronic > here), which I installed as well. Funny thing is that a few days later I received a call saying that their internet wasn't working anymore. I went to investigate and everything in the router seemed like it was set the way it should.
If I print from a wireless connected laptop to the printer (via the router and print server) it actually prints the page. But if I try to open a webpage, it simply wont load. If I plug the internet cable directly into the laptop instead of the router, the internet works, so it's not a problem with their ISP. I guess it's somewhere in the router being influenced by that printserver thing, or maybe something just got screwed up because of said print server.
Does anyone have any idea what I could try to do to fix this?
    Cheers,
    -DeV

It took a while before I found the time to go to my neighbours and check this but here are the results:
    IPConfig - Netstat
Sorry that these are in Dutch, you guys probably know these settings anyway, if not let me know and I'll translate.

I plugged a cable from the laptop to the router. Normally it is wireless so basically I wired it. However, I was not able to access the routers admin section this way (or any internet pages for that matter). When I plug the internet cable that leads into the router (the one the ISPs signal comes in on) I can access the internet AND the router. I guess that I can access the router wireless, because there's no cabled connection in this situation..
Click status check the Ip address under internet …..if got a valid public Ip try going online .
When I access the status panel this way, I get an empty IP, gateway etc (0.0.0.0), probably because the router doesn't have the internet cable plugged in (that one's in the laptop).
if not click on set up...look for “mac address clone”….enable the service & click clone….click save settings....Do power cycle & see whether it is working or not....
This didn't really do much in this case. I presume "do power cycle" means pulling the power out and plugging the power back in?
If it helps any more, the laptop says it has a perfect wireless signal. But I'm fairly sure that that's always the case and it just goes wrong in the router itself. I hope this helps, if there's any more, let me know.

  • Problem with wrt54gl Cannot find server or DNS Error

    Hello,
I am having problem with wrt54gl roouter. I have windows 2K professional that connected trough the wire. The browser (and other tools) is periodically loosing connection for around 30-60 seconds showing "Cannot find server or DNS Error". after refreshes it comes back. If I connect PC directly to internet without router I never have a problem. I have put statical resolution of dns servers(3 of them) and ip does not help. I switch between ports on pc and router site, change the cable, remove antivirus, put latest windows updates, use different browsers. Disable anable 2d network card (2 on mother board).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Hi… Login to the setup page of the router and reduce the MTU to 1365. Upgrade or re-flash the firmware if needed.

  • WRT54GL router's DHCP Active IP Table don't show wired ones?

    Hello.
On my old Linksys WRT54GL router (with its latest stock firmware)'s http://192.168.1.1/DHCPTable.asp for DHCP Active IP Table, it only shows wireless connections. How come it doesn't show wired ones?
    Thank you in advance.
    Solved!

Make sure the wired computers are not on static ip configuration, that there's no IP address permanently assigned to them. They should all be on DHCP, getting IP addresses from the router. If that's ok. It could be with the fw of the router. I suggest you may reflash it but if it didn't resolve the issue, reset the router then reconfigure it. Because on the DHCP client's table, it should show there all devices connected wired and wirelessly thru the router.
Here's the link for the download site.

Oh goofy me. Yes, I am using static IP addresses for the wired computers. Hmm, is there a way to view those static IP addresses?

  • Can't get laptop online with WRT54GL

I've got a Dell Studio laptop running Windows 7 that I'm trying to get onto a wireless network with a Linksys WRT54GL router. I can see and "connect" to the network fine, but in the Network and Sharing Center, it's stuck "Identifying" the network, so I can't get online.
Same thing happens when I plug in an ethernet cord.
My NIC is a Dell wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-card, showing no errors in device manager.
My IPv4 is set to obtain IP address and DNS server address automatically.
My TCP /IPv6 is set to obtain IPv6 address and DNS server address automatically.
When I run an ipconfig /all, my:
    IPv6 address is fe80::c8a5:4afb:22b7:d165%15
    IPv4 address is 195.254.209.101
    Default gateway is blank
The router does NOT have MAC address filtering on.
The router has all green lights and CAN access the internet with my desktop ethernet connection, which is how I'm posting this.
    Please help! Thanks!

Did you enable wireless security on the router? You may need to change the SSID and channel on the router.

  • Back to My Mac and Vonage Linksys RTP 300 Router

I am trying to get Back to My Mac to work with my iMac running 10.6.2 and my PowerBook G4 running 10.5. But I have a problem with my router... I use the Vonage (RTP-300) and it is not one of the supported routers on the list.
I basically have the same question as this user:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1518112
Although the question has been answered, I don't know how to use my Time Machine as the base station and have my Vonage connect to it without making it the router. Right now this is my set-up:
Cable box > Vonage RTP 300 > Time Machine > iMac
Can someone please help me with step-by-step guide? Thanks in advance!

Can anyone help me please? I'm desperate! Thanks in advance!

  • 3 56G wireless ready Macs need info on a wireless router.

We have a two level house and the macintosh that will have the router will be on one end of the house on the seconds level while the other two mac are on the first floor.
The first would be in the middle of the of the other two and we estimate the distance with the wireless antena pointing down to the lower level that would would need a wireless area coverage of about 70ft a 100 would probably cover us and be the better choice.
anyone help me as we are stuck on dialup till I find out which would be the better wireless router for out problem.
    Thanks.

There are of course several different options available to you.
One of many is this set-up here.

Bear in mind that if you do not use an Airport Extreme Base (Router), The Router you use must be able to use WDS set-up to extend the network with Airport Express.
There are literaly 100s of different Routers on the Market from the various manufactures all of them make good products it is really hard to guage which has the best coverage area, I have had several and the Airport Extreme is by far and away the easiest to confiqure for Mac.
    Good Luck with your choice.
One last thing many users cringe at the price of the Airport Extreme, but remember it is also a print server as well and if you fiqure each as a stand alone hardware it's cheap.
