Type appearance in indesign

Anyone noticed a pretty huge difference between the appearance of text onscreen in quark versus indesign? Type in Indesign looks a lot heavier onscreen compared to quark. It prints fine of course, but the appearance is offputting, especially to the quark based designers at my work I'm trying to convert... I've googled about and searched on here, but no joy.

No changes beyond the default settings and this applies to all the mac in the studio I work in (4) as well as my home machine. I have tried the high res view setting also.
Specifically the lighter text weights such as Gill Sans Light looks bolder than compared to quark, or even the pdf.

Type problem with InDesign, especially CC.

Hi. I'm experiencing a type problem with InDesign, especially CC. When I open a type box, the cursor appears in the top right hand corner. I can correct that by selecting 'range left' but when I paste or type in my copy, the final period of each paragraph appears at the beginning of the last line. This is drivning me up the wall as I can find a way of correcting it.
Any ideas to solve this problem?

Are you using a MENA (Middle East North Africa, Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, …) version? Then restting woul not help.
If not, you have to create a new document with the same Paragraph, Character and Object Styles (name should be identical) and import them into the other document to overwrite these style oddities.
If you are working without styles? Create correct new styles and apply them.
I doubt that resetting preferences will change here anything as paragraph properties from any existing document will not be changed when working with new preferences.

Condition Types appearing two times in a Purchase Order

Hi,
The condition types are same in supplementary schema (for Info Record) and Purchase Order Calculation Schema. When I put some value against a condition type under conditions in Info Record then that condition type appears 2 times in the purchase order. It seems the condition type appears 1st time (with value from Info Record) because it is picked from Info Record and 2nd time (with no value) from the Purchase Order Calculation Schema.
The requirement is condition type should appear only single time in PO (by default) with or without value in spite of having info record. In case some value is maintained in Info Record then the condition type should appear with value but in a single line in PO which can be edited if required. There should not be second line of same condition type by default in PO.
Can anyone provide some idea to resolve this?

There is only 1 condition line (apart from PB00), which comes 2 times in PO by default, in MEK2 and also one condition line (one line was deleted and then saved) in last PO (from the Info Record). But the condition type still comes 2 times while creating a new PO.
Please provide some more answer to resolve this issue.

Some fonts do not appear in InDesign

Some fonts do not appear in InDesign although they can be used in Word, Pagemaker and show in Adobe Typemanager.

Can you name one?
These are the most common causes of people complaining "My fonts don't appear":
(a) Smart name sorting. "New Century Schoolbook" sorts under "C", not "N". "Adobe Garamond" sorts under "G". (I call this 'smart' sorting because apparently it isn't the same as, ehm, dumb sorting. However, I've never read a good description of its sort parameters.)
(b) Word and PageMaker (but not ATM) allow the use of fake fonts: bold, italics and bold+italics are produced by horribly deforming your base font. If you want a bold font in InDesign, use the designed one. If there isn't one designed ... the designer probably had good reasons not to make one. (It's still possible to create faux-bold and faux-italics in InDesign but the program leaves that decision to you).
(c) Smart Script sorting. InDesign groups its fonts per supported script. Latin fonts are at the top (a slightly self-centric choice), then come groups of fonts for Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, etc. etc. A font like Gisha contains Hebrew characters and thus appears in the Hebrew group.
(d) More than one font file with the same font name (internally). ID gets mightily confuzed if it encounters a file "times.ttf", font name "Times Roman", in one folder, and "tr_____.pfb", font name "Times Roman", in another folder. You can't really blaim it, though.

Fonts not appearing in InDesign

Hi,
Does anyone know why some fonts won't appear in InDesign even though they are in my Fonts folder on Local Disk? I also tried putting a copy in the Fonts folder in InDesign, but they still don't appear in the program.

Thank you for all of your responses. I apologize for the late comment; I left work early on Friday and didn't get to try deleting the Adobe Font lists. Interestingly enough though, yesterday (Monday) the Arial Black regular showed up in both Photoshop and InDesign but in the list under Arial. Arial Black still only shows the italic option. I swear though that when I scanned the font lists in both programs to make sure they weren't out of order some place else, that it wasn't there, and even in InDesign, it highlighted my text to tell me I was missing the font. When I opened the same file yesterday, it no longer showed the highlight. I tried restarting the computer on Friday too though, so I don't know what the difference was between Friday and Monday, but the Arial Black regular is there now, so I'll just go along with it.

Thanks. Yes, I had referred to that InDesign Secrets post before posting my question. Thus my question about table. Still dont know why my insert table command is greyed out. The stairstep method doesnt work with my narrow spine and decorative, non-monospace font, as explained in exchange here with Bob Levine. And downloading the CJK version for this single, simple task is just too much trouble. The individual text frames proved the fastest solution.

Why can't I get open type features to work properly with an open type font on InDesign CS5.5?

I installed a very complete set of styles of an opentype font with Font Book – Mac OS X 10.9.4 – but when I tried to format a sample text on InDesign CS5.5 I noticed that I could not use the opentype features on the Open Type menu as I usually do.
Could anyone help me, please?

It's ffScala Sans, but has separate files for small caps, figures, etc.
I was trying to use small caps, lining figures and superscripts when I
noticed none of the OT features are available.

When I enter log on details in a website what I type appears in the address bar

The first character I type appears in the website's log in space, the next characters start appearing in the address bar, so i cannot log in.

When I type fi in InDesign, the f is deleted. If I hit backspace, the f comes back, but the i is deleted. I even tried to copy the text I need from Word. When I paste it, the f is deleted. I've restarted InDesign and tried a different keyboard.

Try turning off Ligatures in your style.

Photoshop type appears condensed

I've run into an issue where type appears to be condensed in Photoshop CS3. It happens with any typeface I choose. I'm on an PowerPC iMac and using Suitcase over a network. Any ideas why this is happening?

Check your horizontal scale.

Desktop Content Viewer won't appear in InDesign CS6

I am having an issue in CS6 Indesign with teh ADOBE DESKTOP CONTENT VIEWER.
I try to preview a folio using the desktop viewer and nothing happens, it silently fails.
I have uninstalled Indesign CS6 (including preferences), Uninstalled adobe Air 3.3. Uninstalled the content viewer.
rebooted, reinstalled air rebooted, reinstalled Indesign CS6 rebooted...
After installing InDesign CS6, i choose Help > Updates and updated the DPS Desktop Tools
And it still doesn't work!
I think it may be to do with AIR rather than InDesign because it goes through the progressbars in InDesign and I have previously a BETA version of AIR that caused an issue else where, even though this is now uninstalled and the latest release of AIR is installed it still is failing to comunicate with AIR.
I also, based on another posts recomendation, installed earlier version of the tools, but this made no difference. I suspected it wouldnt as it installed to different version folders.
Its really frustrating as it works fine on a co-workers PC running 64bit WIndows 7
I now get this error if the folio is a new folio...
I deleted my current folio and started again and when i try to preview i get this...

I can see, for such a long time many people are facing this issue (Desktop Content Viewer won't appear in InDesign CS6)
Friends here is the solution of this distinguished problem.
Steps: [For Window XP]
[Make sure your log-in has “Administration” rights]
Open My Computer [Window Key + E].
Open the Main Local Disk [C:].
Click on “Search” tab above.
Click on “All files and folders”.
Write “AdobeContentViewer.air” in “All or part of the file name:” Box.
Click on “Search” [Now you can see “AdobeContentViewer.air” file]
Double click on “AdobeContentViewer.air” to install it.
Select checkbox for “Desktop Shorcut”
Once it installed, open “Adobe Content Viewer” from the desktop.
Now close “Adobe Content Viewer”.
Open Indesign Application and try to “Preview” your article/work from the “Folio Overlay Panel”
I hope this will work for you.

"the file has an un-supported compression type" appears today after updating Premiere Pro CC

Started computer, Opened up TX ATTO project today and portions of an existing project is off line after project opens, and does not ask you to relink as it is opening.
A segment of a sequence in the timeline is Off Line. Go to Relink, then find clip, select, then “the file has an un-supported compression type” appears as you select the correct clip to “relink”. Will not let you relink. Fun Fun
I did nothing but edit yesterday and e-mail. Nothing new or opened, except update CC PP. The clips that it need to link with are there.

MTS files, from a SONY FS100 camera. First time we have seen this occurrence with multiple boxes running PP CC.
I tried some just basic tests.
It was only one clip. So I copied it to the desk top, renamed it something different and it relinked that specific clip thru the entire timeline. Weird. Something with the clip name with in the project got corrupt, because even the specific back up of the RAW media clip on our server said the exact same error.
Problem solved.

Unknown characters appeared in InDesign CS6

The character "Ahat" appears between the words of and Celanese in InDesign CS6. I am unable to find this character using find/change option. Even i tried to use Glyph search. But result remains "Cannot find match".
Please note that the same character has appeared while generating PDF. But unable to find and replace this character in InDesign by using the option "Text", "GREP", "Glyph" in Find/Change palette.
Help to solve this issue in InDesign.

There is no 'character', this is a font display problem. As Peter said, it is a "character mapping" problem, but not as simple as "this character got inserted" Instead, something is going wrong in the internal character lookup table that InDesign uses to find, for example, candidates for ligatures. In essence, this looks for character combinations such as "f" and "i" and replaces them on screen only with a single ligature "fi". (Where the actual text, when copied or searched, still consists of a separate "f" and "i".)
Hence, my suggestion to switch off ligatures to test if this is the case.
If you assign another font to this text, does the problem go away?
If it does, then InDesign has a problem with this particular font. I mentioned one cause already: more than one installed font with the same name but with a different version number. To test if this is the case: check with Find Font what font file is used for this text. Remove the font file. Now InDesign should not be able to show the correct font. If it still does, it found another font file for the same font.
Option 2: the font is fine but InDesign's cached data on it got corrupted. Clear its font caches. (This involves looking for some files and deleting them. There should be instructions how to elsewhere on this forum.)
Option #3: the font file itself got corrupted. If none of the above works, deinstall the font, delete the font file, and install a fresh copy from where you got it.
