Type dissappearing in InDesign document

I am working in CS4 and transferring files from a mac pro in my home office to a mac pro in my clients office. When I open the document, type is missing. There is a text box for the type but the type is gone and has to be typed in again. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Both computers are mac pros One is OSX 10.5.8 the other is a newer version of OSX. Thanks..

Thomas,
This sounds more like a question to ask in the forum for the application in question, which could be the relevant Indesign one:

or another one such as Illustrator:

  • How to create a link to a dropbox file in an InDesign document?

    I have an InDesign document where I have successfully inserted links to a homepage, but I would also link a file which I keep in my Dropbox. I.e. when people click on the icon/text in the InDesign document, I would like them to be taken to the download page in Dropbox.
    Simply marking the text and >add new hyperlink and copying the download link into the appropriate field hasn't worked so far.
    Thanks a lot for any help!
    Best,
    Marvis

    I just typed my email address in InDesign, and chose Create Hyperlink from the Hyperlink panel menu. Chose Email Address as the type. Added a Subject Line. It shows the email link in the hyperlink list.
    Exported the same way. Works fine in Acrobat. Clicking launches my email application:

  • How do I get a Euro into my InDesign document?

    I need to know how to insert a euro symbol into my Indesign document.
    I have looked at other posts and the suggestion of holding down the Alt key with 0128 doesn't work for me.
    Does anyone have any other suggestions please?
    I am based in England.
    Thanks

    Hey, I'm from Ireland and the Euro symbol is a pita.
    The keyboard comes fitted with an Alt Gr + 4 (the right alt key and the number 4 on the top row) but that does not translate well across RIPs and often come out as question marks or blank squares.
    Please use the Euro Font that is available for free http://www.adobe.com/type/eurofont.html
    Usually I will use a symbol I don't usually use in the document (being in Ireland I don't need the £ symbol at all), so I use that symbol but in the Euro Font, available in 3 different flavours with different weights.
    So pick a symbol you won't use and then apply the Euro font.
    I have a nested style for Euro symbols that applies it as a character style. And with CS4 it should be possible to use a GREP STYLE to apply the Euro font to anywhere you need the Euro symbol to show up.
    It's really the best option as it's a font and it's a character of a font and it won't drop out of the RIP.
    (Suggestions for alt characters to use could be ¬ or $ or ~ or #, for example. That way if you need to find $ or £ you still can without finding all the Euro Symbols too)

  • InDesign document for proofreading in Word?

    Hi,
    Our office is producting a monthly newsletter of about 52 pages. So far, we have been doing it in Microsoft Word and this is working quite well. When the newsletter is finished, I email it to a proofreader who makes the necessary changes and returns it to me. All the changes are clearly visible and can be accepted or rejected with the help of the Reviewing Toolbar.
    However, we are soon switching over to InDesign, and my question is: How can I convert the InDesign document into a format that can be reviewed in Word? Our proofreader (doing his work at home) does not have InDesign.
    I would be gratefull for any suggestions and comments.

    This is a workflow issue.
    Typos and other word-proceesing changes should be fixed PRIOR to placement of the story in InDesign so you aren't correcting dozens of those mistakes after layout is complete. Word files with changes that are waiting for acceptance or rejection are a very large source of trouble.
    That's the theory, but here in the real world there are still usually a few errors that get by, so some changes are pretty inevitable. Since line endings are generally different in Word and ID, one of the most common changes I see is editing to add or lose a line for copy fit or to fix a "runt."  Many of us use PDF for proofing -- sending a PDF to the proofer that has been enabled for commenting in Adobe Reader. This works pretty well, though I find it helps if you can train the proofreader to use the highlighter tool in conjuction with whatever other tool they might be using to make changes.
    ID also comes with a free year of the CS Live online service that is full of bells and whistles for commenting and other markup of your project. I don't use it, primarily because I don't want to get hooked on a service that I'll have to pay for to continue using only a few times a year, but you may feel differently.
    Bottom line, I think is that you should contine to do the writing in Word, but don't attempt fancy Word formatting to make it "look like" your newsletter -- just type. ID is the program for layout. Send the Word file as usual for editing, Accept/reject changes, then place the file into ID. When layout is complete send a new PDF proof with commenting enabled with the understanding that YOU will need to make any new changes, and the types of changes should really be limited to layout issues (if possible) rather than wholesale re-writes. The same goes for images, by the way. If they need some sort of correction, that really should be done before they get to you for inclusion, but again, that isn't always what happens. Fortunately, ID's integration with Photoshop and Illustrator make it a snap to choose "edit original" to pop over to those apps, edit a linked asset, and go back to ID where the link will update automatically.
    Do your writers use styles in Word? Do they even know what that means? Your life in ID will be much simpler, and the layout faster, if you get properly styled (meaning text is tagged with styles, not necessarily that those styles have the correct final formats) documents from your authors. That's seldom the case out here in the real world, but we can all wish. There are several free scripts floating around that will take a typical Word file that is 100% formatted using Normal and bold and italic buttons and will preserve the local changes, creating proper styles. You'll want to try these...

  • Proper way to set up an InDesign document for performance?

    Hello there,
    I'm wondering if I am using the product wrong, because I am having a heck of a time with the performance of my documents grinding my computer to a halt.
    I'm starting a new project, it's a 92 page book. On each page will be one or two *hi-res* pieces of art, at around 450dpi. Multiply this by 92, and you get something big. In the past I have simply placed the artwork which creates a link back to the original, and update the original as needed. However the last time I did this, when I got to like page 22, the InDesign document was no longer usable, it just killed the PC (a modern one).
    In that case I was placing Adobe Illustrator .ai files. Maybe that was the reason? In this case, I need to place PSD files.
    So my questions are a) what's the best way to place the files and b) what format should I place the PSDs? I need to export this in PDF form for print.
    Thanks for any help! It's been ages since I've done print work.

    Well, there a couple of vague statements in your question, but I am going to take a quick stab at it before we get into that.
    Yes, when you drop an image (photo, illustration, etc.), into an InDesign file it creates a link and you can edit the original as needed and it will be updated in the InDesign file.
    First make sure you're updating the files one at a time. Select the element you want to "fix", click Edit> Edit Original and make your changes. Save the original file, then check in with the InDesign file and see that the image has updated, then move onto the next.
    Second you can set up these linked files to display within InDesign as low-res versions to keep your system running faster. Give that a try also. You can set it up from View > Display Performance or by Right clicking on the image and selecting Display Performance > Fast Display.
    As for the vague statements, because others will ask.
    What version of InDesign?
    What type of system specifically? Processor, Ram, Video Card, Video Ram, etc.
    What is it doing to your system? Locks, crashes, explodes into pieces?
    p.s.
    Why 450 dpi files?
    What type of files? Tiff, PDF, JPEG, etc?

  • Type problem with InDesign, especially CC.

    Hi. I'm experiencing a type problem with InDesign, especially CC. When I open a type box, the cursor appears in the top right hand corner. I can correct that by selecting 'range left' but when I paste or type in my copy, the final period of each paragraph appears at the beginning of the last line. This is drivning me up the wall as I can find a way of correcting it.
    Any ideas to solve this problem?
    Thanks

    Are you using a MENA (Middle East North Africa, Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, …) version? Then restting woul not help.
    If not, you have to create a new document with the same Paragraph, Character and Object Styles (name should be identical) and import them into the other document to overwrite these style oddities.
    If you are working without styles? Create correct new styles and apply them.
    I doubt that resetting preferences will change here anything as paragraph properties from any existing document will not be changed when working with new preferences.

  • Once uploaded, my indesign document has a different typeface.  Why is the font replaced?

    We have a standard branding font that we are required to use throughout all of our marketing collateral.  The cloud has replaced it with Times when it's saved.  Thanks for your help!

    We do not have access to your customer fonts. The fonts we support for image previews of InDesign files is documented here http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/fontinstall/cs6installedfonts.html.
    One solution is to convert the InDesign document to a PDF and upload. The PDF will retain the custom font. And the image preview will display as you expect.

  • Looking for Software that will preview thumbnails of all pages Indesign documents (like Bridge)

    Hello,
    I am trying to build a library of documents. But the problem is, I have to open each document in Indesign to see what's in it. Does anyone know of a preview type of software that will work with indesign documents, and PowerPoint Documents. Kinda like bridge, but will let me preview all of the pages in each document?
    My thanks in advance.

    If you want it for archive disks that are offline CD Finder / Winder does InDesign previews too. Avoid having to load DVD/Tapes/whatever archival media of choice.

  • Database to InDesign Document

    Hi,
    Im a newbie to InDesign. I would really appreciate you guys to help me out of this technical problem. Scenario -> I have the page layout / images / text / frames,etc details in database. This skeletal view which are stored in database needs to be converted to an InDesign document. I have read from ID documentation that we can create ID documents using SDK / JavaScript / CORBA. What I really wanted to know is this. Can I convert the database details into InDesign document automatically by some parsers, etc ?

    "control EasyCatalog through the power of cross-platform Javascript, AppleScript on the Macintosh or Visual Basic on Windows." says to me you would update the links for the InDesign file if necessary through a script, and then through that same script you would export that InDesign file as a PDF to a network location.
    From that point there's many ways to make sure your sales guys have it. I think a network drive is probably the simplest. In any case by putting the InDesign into PDF you can't maintain visual fidelity and content integirty without having to juggle licenses. The added bonus is cell phones and tablets will support PDF, where with InDesign it's not going to look so great.
    Ultimately your solution is going to depend on your budget. If you don't mind something with a few interim steps you can do it for essentially labour. The drawback of that type of workflow is that it can quickly become esoteric.

  • Smart collection of image files linked to InDesign documents?

    I would like to create a Smart Collection that finds all of the image files linked to InDesign documents in a specific folder.
    I am the yearbook advisor at school and I need to easily find all of the images that have been placed so that we don't reuse images by mistake.
    I have no scripting experience, so I can't create something myself, and I haven't been able to find anything that does such a thing.
    Many yearbook design software programs do offer something like this - indicating that an image has been used previously.
    I guess it would need to look at the metadata of the InDesign Files for the Linked Files and then pit all of the files found there into a Smart Collection.  Ideally, I would be able to further limit it by file type. ANd to not include Master pages if so desired (although that would just be a bonus!)
    I greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can give.
    Thanks!

    I'd be glad to give it a shot, even though I'm a beginner (and I am afraid I am out of my depth), but i'm missing something obvious because I could download and install the script, but if I try to open it to edit it, I just get gobbeldygook.  Any chance you could paste the script here?
    Again, I really appreciate your help.

  • [InDesign CS3] Unable to place PICT image on InDesign document.

    Hi all,
    I am trying to place a PICT type image on InDesign CS3 document but it is being shown disabled in open dialog. And when I drag this image(PICT type) to InDesign document, I am getting an error message "Quick Time and a TIFF (uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture".
    Note: This problem is coming on both MAC and Windows.
    Thanks in anticipation

    When you place content from InDesign, why are you exporting it as JPG?
    You can either
    save the INDD file and place it directly into InDesign or
    export the INDD as PDF/X-4 and place it into InDesign.
    This should result in better quality than using JPGs which will be always a loss of crispyness, change of colors, blurry text and loss of quality.

  • Place graphic in InDesign document via Excel sheet

    Hi,
    I'm new to scripting in InDesign, but need to work on my skills;)
    In school, I already gathered some basic skills in JavaScript, therefore JavaScript is my choice to write a script for InDesign. Even though the environment is Mac OS X and InDesign CS3, AppleScript might be easier to code in?
    Here is the problem:
    An Excel sheet contains a list of names of .eps files generated from SAP. My goal is to create a script that loads the .eps files in this sheet from the location they're saved into the InDesign document and place them in the designated frames.
    My first question: Is this even possible?
    Currently I'm testing and reading some manuals and refernces, but I would be happy for every tiny bit of hint or help or how to get started, so, thanks a lot for your help in advance!
    Greets,
    Alex

    Thank you for your help!
    After playing around some time, I figured out, it would be easier for me to do an XML Import using a XSLT file.
    Unfortunately the XML file generated by Excel is very complex, so I have some issues to extract the needed content.
    Has anybody experience in handling the Microsoft Excel XML?
    Here is the XML:
    <Row>
    <Cell ss:StyleID="s23">
    <Data ss:Type="String"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="DATA1"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="TESTKEYS"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="TEST0"/>
    </Cell>
    <Cell ss:StyleID="s23">
    <Data ss:Type="String">4</Data>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="DATA2"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="TESTKEYS"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="TEST0"/>
    </Cell>
    <Cell ss:StyleID="s23">
    <Data ss:Type="String">1</Data>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="TESTKEYS"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="DATA3"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="TEST0"/>
    </Cell>
    <Cell ss:StyleID="s21">
    <Data ss:Type="String">A63027A01BL</Data>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="DATA4"/>
    <NamedCell ss:Name="TEST0"/>
    </Cell>
    </Row>
    And this is my XSLT, which just generates the complete content:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <xsl:stylesheet version="2.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:fn="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-functions" xmlns:xdt="http://www.w3.org/2005/xpath-datatypes" xmlns:err="http://www.w3.org/2005/xqt-errors" xmlns:zuf="http://www.beispiel.com/zuf/3.0" xmlns:pri="http://www.pmn.net/prn/PntI" xmlns:ws="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet" xmlns:ss="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet">

  • InDesign Documents in several different languages... how many versions InDesign do we need?

    Hi everyone,
    Pls. can you refer to my last thread about working with InDesign documents in Japanese and Arabic at
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.59b707dc
    It was also suggested in that thread that perhaps different versions can be installed in separate user accounts on a Mac system.
    We now have a lot more languages that we are working with and I am trying to figure out the MAXIMUM no. of InDesign versions that we can work with. There are NOT many times we will need to work in all of these languages so we are trying to keep costs down as much as possible. Do you think we could get by with just ONE version of InDesign and a few scripts? See this thread at
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b7cd5a/0 where there are links to some workarounds. I have not been able to access those links tho'.
    Any advice you can give will be much appreciated!!! :)
    Here are the languages we need to work in (as you can see...there are a BUNCH):
    Dutch

    French
    Hungarian
    Polish

    Hello
    I have been working on Adobe Indesign CS2/CS3 from so many years and was so frustrated by it’s minimum support for Indian Languages.I intalled IndiPlus And SpellPlus Plugin provided by Metadesign Solutions. Indicplus Plug-in is capable to render complex scripts (Indian Languages and others) without error using Unicode fonts. This is the first plugin which supports typing in both Indian and Other languages using complex script in Indesign.
    SpellPlus delivers the much needed spell check feature to Adobe Indesign in various Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil and Bengali etc. SpellPlus enhances the potential of Indesign by augmenting the language and spelling options available to the user It just saved me.
    IndicPlus – Helps type in any Indian Language with Unicode fonts
    SpellPlus – Spell Checker for various Indian Languages
    Site:
    http://www.metadesignsolutions.com/index-3.html
    Never had any problems with it. Awesome tool for Indian Languages. Has one tool for Adobe Indesign CS4 also. I will highly recommend it.
    Cheers
