Type layers

Hi there,
i've a new problem. i've typed a huge amount of text on a landscape background and made a spelling mistake(after checking it visually grrrrrrr).this is how i did it.i dont know if i've done this correctly but here goes, opened the graphic image. then flattened image in order to create bounding box. typed all text within confines of bounding box(which encompasses whole document). merged layers then printed. I tried to edit it  and found i couldn't. more grrr's. how do i make it possible to correct one word without re-typing the whole document please. and could anyone give me pointers as how to do the aforementioned task correctly please. in laymans terms....
many thanks

If you flattened the image or merged the layers, the text is no longer editable. It is always wise to keep a text layer live for that reason and to make a separate version for print.  (Or to keep the text backed up as a text document.)
The way to do the job correctly is in InDesign which is meant for setting large blocks of text whereas Photoshop definitely isn't.

  • "...Rasterized type layers..." problem in CS6 extended

I was running CS6 64bit - perpetual licence version - happily. No problems.  Then I joined the Adobe subscription service, deactivated and uninstalled CS6.  Then I downloaded and installed the CC version of CS6 and updated it.  Now when I open any document, or create a new one, I get the following error messager -
"Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended - Some of the the [sic] type layers in this document were rasterized because an error prevented them from being read".
I can just click "OK" on the message box and all then seems alright.  But every time I open an image file - no matter what file format - I get the error message.
Grateful for any ideas.  I'll be elevated to Photoshop CC next week but I'd like to get rid of the current CS6 problem before then.
Incidentally, I only managed to update CS6 Extended by uininstalling the old version and installing a fresh online version and then immediately updating using the Application Manager.
    Thanks.
    AND...
Just discovered that when I try to add text to an image I get the following error message -
"Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended -Could not complete your request because something prevented the text engine from being initialised"
?  Presumably the problems are linked.

Thank you Curt.  I was unclear in my first message.  I just installed the subscription version over my existing CS6 version.  I only uninstalled the downloaded subscription version of CS6 because I was unable to update it (using either the Application Manager or from inside CS6).  The update installed ok up to an error message -
"Adobe Photoshop 13.0.1.2 - Installation failed.  Error code U44M1P7".  Uninstalling CS6 and then reinstalling a downloaded version fresh allowed the update to take place.
As for the problem I was posting about - the text related error messages - I have found the answer I think.  The problem is the contents of theTypeSupport folder at username/Appdata/Local/Adobe/ TypeSupport.  When I deleted this folder all was fine again - no error messages and text tool working preoperly.  When I rebooted the computer after deleting the folder it was recreated with one file missing - which I take to be the culprit.  The file was - "AdoneFnt_CommonFonts.lst".
I'll see how things are after CC arrives next week.

  • PS CS5 stalls when opening file with type layers

Macbook Pro / 10.6.7 / 4GB RAM / 2GHz i7 / CS5 12.0.4.x64. No extra plugins or anything. New system, clean install from last week.
When I open a file (any size/color/dimensions) that has type layers PS with hang for about 25 seconds, then come back just fine. If I clear the font cache (I use FontExplorer X 3) the problem will go away for a brief time (minutes?), then come back. Close and reopen a file, same hang. Close PS, reopen PS, reopen file, same hang.
Files with no font layers are not affected — no hang, no delay, snappy... unless a file with type layers is already open, then there is the same delay.
If a file with type layers is open in PS and hung on open, and I open/double-click it again from the finder I get another hang.
Turing off font preview makes no difference, turning off OpenGL makes no difference.
But, turning a font on or off in FontExporer does clear the problem for a while.
    Any thoughts?

It looks like the plug in was the culprit. I have it turned off and haven't had the problem in a while (though I haven't used PS in a bit on text-heavy projects either).
    Thanks for the help.

  • Some of the the type layers in this document were rasterized

We have Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended.
Recently one of the documents we created came up with this error:
Some of the the type layers in this document were rasterized because  an error prevented them from being read.
We aren't using any fancy font in the document, just Lucida Sans
I found one discussion with a similar issue that was caused by the Suitcase Fusion 3 add-on, and resolved when they updated that add-on.  However, we do not have said add-on activated in our Photoshop.
Can anyone help us figure out what happened so we won't run across this problem again?
    Zane B Stein

I still haven't received a reply on this forum, over a year later.
We ended up redoing the document again from scratch.
We just received the error again with a new document, this time a much more time-consuming document to set up.  The only font however is Arial.
We have Windows 7, 32-bit, Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, all adobe products on the computer have the latest update.
What can we do to avoid the error, "
Some of the the type layers in this document were rasterized because  an error prevented them from being read."?

  • All Type Layers Suddenly Rasterized

This is really weird. I'm working on a mock-up for a website and was going along and suddenly realized that somehow ALL of my type layers had been rasterized. How could that possibly happen!!???

Loss of history is is why my general photography actions all make snapshots before they run (not to mention that they do most of their work in a temporary document then paste the results back).
If your actions are of your own making (or even if they're not) you might consider adding a step to the beginning of each that creates a new History Snapshot.  It could help you recover from a situation like this.
I also keep my own history count pretty large.
I don't have a good idea why your text layers would be rasterized, though.  Something an action or plugin did, perhaps?

    Changing Multiple Linked Type Layers
If you want to make the same change to more than one Type Layer at the same

All of the Linked Layers will show the same change.

    Hi Jeff,
I'm beginning to develop a strong dislike for this forum's new interface!!
    But that's not your fault.
The tables below use a VLOOKUP formula to retrieve the prices from the Current Pricing, and an IF statement in E1 to determine which column the prices are fetched from.
The added column isn't necessary; it was just simpler t do that than to go through the hassle of re-merging the single cell in Row 1. With a change of the cell reference in the VLOOKUP formula, the first formula can be placed anywhere convenient.
    In E1:
    =IF(LEFT(A1,1)="I",2,3)
The result of this formula tells VLOOKUP to return the results from column 2 or 3 of the Current Pricing table, depending on the first letter of the text in A1 being an "I".
    In C3 and Filled Down:
    =IF(B>0,VLOOKUP(A,Current Pricing :: $A:$C,$E$1,FALSE),"")
IF is used to return a null string unless there is a value greater than zero in column B.
Looks for the item listed in Column A and returns the value from the row where that item is found and the column specified in E1.
The error triangle in C9 is a "VLOOKUP cannot find.." error cause by the value '3” screws (25lb box)' not being found in column A of Current Pricing.
The error triangle in D9 is "There is an error in C9".
    Regard,
    Barry
PS: The line at the beginning?
I had complete all but the last line of a previous version of this post, and was deleting the '3" screws..." bit which had pasted as a single cell unnamed table, when the software bumped me back to the previous thread in this community. Not the first time this has happened, and in this case, as in the ones before, there appeared to be no route back to my partly completed message. So it was start over time. (/rant)

  • Help with scripting: need to import Excel files into PS type layers

    Howdy all,
I have a series of TV commercials provided to me as layered PS files.  I work in CS3 and export to Avid for editing.
For customization, I need to import their Excel list of phone numbers and duplicate each one into a type layer with existing efx and placement.
There are 30-60 #s, which appear in 2 locations, so automation is key (just finished a 45 # series, and they have more!)
I dont know how to script this, and would appreciate any guidance. I am not asking for someone to do it for me, just help me learn what I have to do.
    Dave Koslow

From Excel save your file out as either CSV or TDT from the drop down 'save as' options. Once you have a plain text file script will be able to read the text file using which ever delimiter best suits you and create an array of string variables that you can use within photoshop to assign to the contents of a text layer…

  • A bug auto-select mode + filtered by type layers

    In addition to this: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4302940#4302940
When selecting multiple layers: 1. click > 2. "draw" a rectangle on the canvas to select desired layers > 3. release to submit selection
The bug happens on step 2: the selection rectangle is not drawn correctly, at some point it freezes with certain size, so there is no visual confirmation on the canvas what will be selected.

That's an interesting one, Thanks for letting us know!
    I've passed it on.

  • Can I export PSD layers to PSD files like I could do in ImageReady 2?

    Hi Folks,
I've been chasing this Layer Export Nirvana for a couple of years now but I've got nowhere.
In ImageReady 2 I could import a PSD file and export layers with exactly the name I used for each layer (with no annotations, prefixes or suffixes), with the entire file size (not cropped to the edge of the image) in a PSD format.
The script in Photoshop adds extenions to the file name that I can't see how to turn off.
I've tried a couple of free (SciptsRus) and commercial (Ferry) scripts but they don't seem to work with my version of Photoshop (Mac CS5 OS X 10.7.4). Is this a result of the recent Javascript updates with Mac OS X 10.7? I'll contact the authors of these scripts next and see what they say.
I tried a PC program called Super Layer which exports to PNG files and almost was what I wanted except it cropped the file size to the size of the image. I could get away with this I suppose if I copied a 1% single pixel into each corner of the file but that would be time consuming for all the layers I need to export (500-600) and means I'd have to rasterise the type layers which is also double handling.
I've even tried Graphic Converter on a Mac but can't get that to quite work. I end up with solid white backgrounds and no transparency.
All I want is to open a PSD file (preferably on Mac OS) and export each layer at the same size on a transparent background with just the name of the layer as the file name as a PSD file. I'll alos accept .PNG format as well as long as I get transparency and full file size. Just like we could do with brilliant effeiciency with ImageReady CS2. I've actually kept an old version of ImageRady on my PC for just this purpose but surely in the 21st Century there is a way around this?
Many thanks in anticipation for any help offered.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with some of the scripts. Normally this is due to the prefferences becoming corrupt. They can be trashed to see if all then works..
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
I have also written a new script yesterday that includes adjustments layers if the exist, so that may work for you?

    Hope it helps.

  • Photoshop CS6 PDF Saves Gray Type

I am saving a combination of mobile screen shots with type descriptions below each screen. The first line and some last lines of type are appearing in gray instead of the standard black. I rasterized the type layers; however, this method thickens the type and causes it to be “bold” in appearance.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Wynne
    Keller, TX

Still does not work. My PSD document is RGB and I use the “No Conversion” setting when saving as PDF. The closest I could get was saving each page as a TIF file and compiling them in Adobe Acrobat Pro CS6. It worked successfully, but not as “clean” as I would have liked for the final comp.
Thank you for your suggestion(s). I appreciate your time and consideration.

  • Merge two text overlay layers without losing effect?

I'm using PS CS4 and I have two text layers on top of each other (they same the same thing) and the layer style for both is set for "overlay". I want to merge (and rasterize) the two layers but keep the look of the doubled up overlay effect.
    Can this be done??
    Thanks...

So if both are set to overlay, then that means they both depend on the pixels below them for the effect. So you have a choice to make.
    1) You can leave them as is (which would be preferable in my mind). Why do you need to merge them?
    2) You can select the transparency of one of the type layers (command-click on the layer icon in the layer panel), and then copy merged and paste. This should give you the layer you desire. I'd save the old layers for later, just in case.
    3) Something I haven't thought of.

  • CS6 photoshop type tool maximally buggy

    Greetings all,
I have a new system - Mini, with wacom Intuos3 (old wacom set up) - with up to date Font Suitcase (fusion? can't recall the exact name - i'm at home now!)
I have upgraded from CS3 to CS6, apparently a no-no. BECAUSE: when I open a CS3 file and work on it in CS6, save it, and then reopen it again later, the type layers are inoperable. Clicking in the type area to edit changes the type to something that was on the former CS3 file. For example, if I typed "BOY" in Univers in CS3, and in CS6, selected and retyped it as BOYHOOD in Times, clicking in the text area of BOYHOOD mysteriously brings back the old "BOY" type in Univers. If I unclick, sometimes it reverts to BOY and won't budge. Sometimes it will stay as BOYHOOD.
If I try to move text from one doc to another, it comes in as different words and style and size in the other doc. It's utterly impossible.
I have the updated Photshop in the last 10 days.
Elsewhere I've read that Wacom may be the issue. I updated that today too. No change.
Any clues to help me with this madness?
    With thanks in advance,
    Jenny

    chris,
    A few questions:
    - I gather cs6 has been out for nearly a year. Isn't there a way you can notify new customers about this bug? You had my emai address etc It's complicated to even order this product on your website - you make it plenty hard. There was ample opportunity for Adobe to notify me. I've spent hours and hours on this issue, and I'm incensed by Adobe's carelessness. Customer service (three calls) wasn't even truthful with me. Or are they not in the loop as well?
    - Conroy has given me the barebones of the problem above, but I would like to get the full description from Adobe. Please give me that full statement, or provide a link where I can read about it. Obviously, thousands of people have been complaining and have been effected.
    - I wll be glad to send you the file that has 'rasterized' type. When I select the area of type to be moved (w/ the marquee selection tool) and then try to place on a separate layer with command J, it's buggy to the max. My email is J at JenniferClark dot com. Please provide w/ your email so that you can see this instance. [personal info removed by admin ]
    - Do you agree that CS3 to CS6 transition is problematic in and of itself? Where can I see a list of all issues that might stem from this transition?
    - What other bugs should I be aware of at this point?
Thank you in advance for your time.

  • Move tool "Show transform controls" with a type layer

I just recently figured this "show transform controls" option with the Move Tool and while trying it out, I noticed it works differently with type layers than others.
On regular bitmap layers it moves, resizes and rotates as supposed, but with type layer it jumps to "free transform" -function when trying to do anything with the transform controls. Causing the tool to drop and the anchor points change place (from text outline to text box?).
Is this normal behaviour or is there something I don't get?

Yes, being able to assign shortcuts to UI elements would be a major productivity jump in several cases! I tought that it
was the advantage of the object-oriented programming, but I my coding abilities stop at "20 go to 10"...

  • Totally frustrated. Need help with type tool in CS2.

Must start by admitting I'm embarrassed to have to even find myself asking this question. . . But after working with PageMaker since Ver. 2.0 in the early '80s, finally was forced to switch to CS2 when I had to replace my Mac/Intel computer 3 (or was it 4 years ago?). Did so fighting and cursing all the way, and I'm still having trouble typing in Photoshop . . . not just today, but EVERY TIME I sit down to work on a project.
Most are brochures and display ads, and though friends and colleagues insist my real problem is that I should be setting them up in InDesign, I'm convinced it's easier to work on graphics and text simultaneously in Photoshop.
My problem is in grabbing text blocks in order to edit them. Occasionally I'm able to highlight the text I need, but usually I keep getting new type layers instead. I know it should not be this difficult, but as soon as I select the text with the cursor, I get a new, empty text box.It doesn't seem to matter if I am in the layers or edit mode.
I may not be the most technically advanced Adobe user, but I'm not stupid. What the heck am I doing wrong? Can someone please steer me right?

    Try this on for size:
    Type Tool Tips for Photoshop
Most folks understand how to create text in Photoshop. You select the Type Tool from the Toolbox, or you tap the "T" key on your keyboard. Then, in the Character Palette you set the attributes for font, color, size, etc. A simple click in your document window will mark the spot where you may begin typing unbounded "point" text. Or, you click and drag in your document window to create a paragraph text box. Type out your text, then tap your "Enter" key to commit the text to its new layer.
It's pretty straightforward, and Photoshop offers a decent set of tools to adjust how your text looks. One hitch that long-timers will tell you about, though: It's generally accepted that Photoshop isn't the best application to be using if you have to have to create a lot of text because it doesn't have all of the adjustment functions necessary to produce large amounts of professional-quality text. Well, the real world being what it is, sometimes, and for some users, Photoshop is the only application they have to work with; might as well make the best of it, right?
So, once you have text entered onto a layer in your document, how do you then reselect iteither all of it or just a portion and navigate through it easily? What follows will answer some of those questions.
Note: The keyboard shortcuts that follow assume you are using a Mac. If you're using Windows, substitute the CTRL key for "Command."
Double-Click on the boxed 'T' thumbnail on the desired Text Layer in the Layers Palette. This will select and highlight all of the text on that layer.
Then, if you want, you can use some keyboard shortcuts to move the "Blinking Bar" Type Tool cursor through the text.
Assuming that your text is enclosed in a click-and-dragged out paragraph text box--When all text is highlighted:
"Home" key will move cursor to the beginning of first line of text.
"End" key will move cursor to the end of last line of text. When text is NOT highlighted, but cursor is flashing within the text:
"Home" key moves cursor to the beginning of the line it's in.
"End" key moves cursor to the end of the line it's in.
Command + "Home" moves cursor to beginning of first line of text.
Command + "End" moves cursor to end of the last line of text.
Shift + "Home" selects text from cursor position to the beginning of the line it's in.
Shift + "End" selects text from cursor position to the end of the line it's in.
Shift + Command + "Home" selects text from cursor position to the beginning of the first line of text.
Shift + Command + "End" selects text from cursor position to the end of the last line of text.Arrow keys can also be used to select text in various ways. When your cursor is flashing within the text:
Shift + Right Arrow cumulatively selects text one character or space at a time, from cursor position, progressing toward the end of the text.
Shift + Left Arrow cumulatively selects text one character or space at a time, from cursor position, progressing toward the beginning of the text.
⇒ Add the Command key to select whole words at a time, in either direction.
Shift + Up Arrow selects text from cursor position back to the next line above the cursor.
Shift + Down arrow selects text from cursor position forward to the next line below the cursor position.
⇒ Add the Command key to select text starting from the cursor position, and accumulating either back to the beginning of the first line, or forward to the end of the last line.
That covers most of what (or more than) you need to know to navigate through and highlight text. There are some other key combos, and now that you have an idea of what to do, I'll let you experiment and discover them on your own.
    Type Tool Visual Indicators
Keep a close eye on your Type Tool cursor as you move it near to and away from a hunk of text in your document window.
When you see it as a plain old "I-Bar" cursor⇒
⇒...that means that it's ready to select a position within that text, or to select a hunk of that text.
    When you see a "boxed I-Bar" cursor⇒
⇒...that means your cursor is outside of the selectable area for the current text, and is ready for you to click (to start right in typing some unbounded point text) or click-n-drag (to create a paragraph text box). This will, of course, create a new text layer.
How can you get a visual indicator of where that selectable area for current text begins and ends without blindly moving your Type Tool cursor around the text? Double-Click on the "Boxed-T" thumbnail in the Layers Palette. The text for that layer will become highlighted in your document window. See the black area that surrounds the text? That shows you the actual space occupied by the characters. If your Type Tool cursor is inside this area, it will display the plain "I-Bar" cursor. If it's outside of that area, it will display the "Boxed I-Bar" cursor.
Want to FORCE Photoshop to create a new Type Layer, even though you're seeing the plain I-Bar cursor?
Hold the SHIFT key, then either click, or click-n-drag out a paragraph text box.

  • Type Layer Error in CS5.5

I've been getting error messages with type layers:
"The type layers in this document were rasterized because something prevented the text engine from being initialized."
"Could not complete your request because of a program error."
Restarting and reinstalling don't seem to help.
I noticed this topic addressed earlier this year, and a temp solution offered was to turn off all fonts in Suitcase 3 and just use system fonts.
Any better solutions for a permanent fix?

You may have a corrupted or duplicated font.  FontAgent Pro is excellent at ferreting out problem fonts.  There's a fully functional, free 30-day demo version available.
Re-installing without first trashing Photoshop preferences is futile, as you end up right back where you started.  To trash preferences, hold down Command+Option+Shift as you launch Photoshop and keep those three keys held down until you see the dialog box allowing you to delete or re-set Photoshop preferences.
Do that now, just in case you have a corrupted preferences file.
Repair Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility before and after every installation, update or upgrade of any application or the OS.
You may also want to clear all your caches with a utility like Cocktail or Onyx.
