Type Mask in CS2

Urgently need to create type as window for tif image. (That is, type stands alone with image showing "though" letterforms. Followed instrux: type placed on top of image, create outline for type, Select image and choose Cut, select type and then PASTE INTO.
The PASTE INTO command is greyed out and non-responsive. HELP!!!

THANK YOU both immensely. I had to alter your InDesign sequence, Scott. It only works when I eliminate the Object >Compound >Make. (This is because it is GREYED out anyway.)
So it works with Outline text and then File>place. This is fine, because it had been the Paste Into step that was the knot.
And Robert, PS works fine too.
Gratefully, Dale

  • Can't get "Type Mask Tool" to work

I'm a newbie to the program and have been able to understand how to use all the tools so far EXCEPT the Type Mask Tool. The Product Help in the Adobe Help Center is very brief and vague. I searched all the online avenues and didn't see my problem addressed.
With my photo as the background layer, I created a new layer and did a New Fill Layer / Gradient. I then used the Type Mask Tool to create some text I wanted to cut out of the gradient layer to paste onto a new layer. I can type the outlined text on the gradient layer but that's it. I can't get it to separate the text from the rest of the layer. If I switch to the photo (background) layer, the outline text is there too and it will cut out the text from the photo/background. But I don't want it affecting the photo/ background layer.
Does the type mask tool only work on the background layer? I tried gradient, solid color, and pattern filled layers and result was the same: I could type the type mask text but it had no effect on those layers, only on the background layer. The Product Help (as vague as it is) doesn't say it only works on the background layer. I'm obviously using the tool wrong, but can't figure out how to use correctly following the limited Product Help explanation for the tool. Can someone give a more thorough explanation of what the tool can and can not do and how to use it? Thanks!

    Scott,
You can use the Type Mask on an adjustment/fill layer's layer mask... you just need to fill the selection or the area outside the selection with the appropriate gray-shade to give the degree of transparency/opacity you want.
For a simple example, if you have a background layer, and a gradient fill layer over it, and have selected the gradient fill's layer mask - when you use the type mask, once you have the marching-ants marquee, fill the selection with black to allow the background to show through the gradient in the shape of the text mask. Or, invert the selection and then fill with black to hide all of the gradient fill except the text shape.
While this may seem more complicated at first, a bit of practice will demonstrate that the added flexibility is well worth the time it takes to understand the concept.

  • Watermarking-Horizontal Type Mask Tool

hello, i have been using the PSE (for MAC) and watermarking my photos- suddenly, all my brushes disappeared. i have been trying, for days, to figure out where they went but cant find them. there used to be a horizontal text tool in my program, but now there is a horizontal type mask tool, i dont know what that is! and where my horizontal type text tool disappeared! now, when i open a new blank file and type a word for a watermark, the text becomes "dotted" like connect the dots/lines not solid lines like it always did before. moreover, it wont let me assign a brush. i dont know what has happened, all i know is that i cannot water mark my photos and my work is suffering. can anyone, please, please help? desperately, sos21

  • AE CS5 - Working with Type Masks

Hi, I'm having a really rough time with Type masks. I had a layer of type which I converted into a mask using Layer > Create Masks from Text.
Now two things are baffling me:
    1. I would like to be able to temporarily hide the mask OUTLINES so I can see the effect of the mask without the distracting yellow border. CTRL+SHFT+H does not work. View > Show Layer Controls does not have any effect on my mask outlines.
    2. I would like to be able to animate this mask getting larger. But when I change the SCALE property of this new layer, nothing happens. I suppose because it's a  SOLID LAYER that is created when you create masks from text. How to scale just the mask? Or do you have to do an extra step of transferring the mask to a shape layer or something?
    I'm dying here.
    thanks!
    T

Thanks to both of you for participating in this question! I really appreciate the quick feedback.
Todd, you can be sure that I HAD read that section of the Adobe After Effects Online Help prior to making that post. I would ask that you read through it and point me to the section that deals with transferring a mask created from type to a shape layer. I was unable to find that information in that section, nor in the section that deals specifically with Type and creating masks from type.
Mylenium, oddly, pressing CTRL+SHIFT+H now (and also pressing Toggle Mask and Shape Path Visibility button) both work as expected. I wish I could say what has changed, but that seems to be a non-issue - surely something stupid I did.
As for scaling the mask, the process is still massively unclear to me. Creating a mask from type transfers the mask to a Solid layer. Scaling the solid layer does nothing. The mask itself is ungrouped and uncompounded, meaning that each individual letter, including internal shapes, end up getting their own properties, but those properties do not include Scale. So I can see no way to scale this mask over time. I'd love to learn from the community their best practices around animating masks created from type.
    Tom
PS: the issue has less urgency now, since I worked around the type mask issue entirely, electing to use a Track Matte instead. But I'd still very much like to learn how it's supposed to be done. How do you get your mask off of a solid layer and into a shape layer?

  • Creating Reverse Type in InDesign CS2

Working with InDesign CS2 - not sure how to reverse type.  PM7 had an option under Type Style to reverse type (change to white to show in a black box).
Unable to find such a feature in InDesign CS2.   How is type reversed in InDesign CS2?  Only way I've seen is to select the type and color it white (color selection not easy for type it seems).  Is there an easy, quick way to reverse type in InDesign CS2?
Would appreciate any help on this you can give.

Above and beyond Ken's factual answer... it's not easy because it's robust. You can do so much more with type color in ID than you can in another app where there's just a "reverse type" checkbox. In fact, pretty much across the board, ID is more robust, so if you really need a way to change color of text, there are at least three or four different ways to do so, some more automated than others, and if the multitude of options still isn't enough, you can write a Javascript or Applescript or VB script to do it for you.
But no, there's no particular setting for "reverse type" unless you make one yourself. I'd suggest a character style with a keyboard shortuct.

  • Totally frustrated. Need help with type tool in CS2.

Must start by admitting I'm embarrassed to have to even find myself asking this question. . . But after working with PageMaker since Ver. 2.0 in the early '80s, finally was forced to switch to CS2 when I had to replace my Mac/Intel computer 3 (or was it 4 years ago?). Did so fighting and cursing all the way, and I'm still having trouble typing in Photoshop . . . not just today, but EVERY TIME I sit down to work on a project.
Most are brochures and display ads, and though friends and colleagues insist my real problem is that I should be setting them up in InDesign, I'm convinced it's easier to work on graphics and text simultaneously in Photoshop.
My problem is in grabbing text blocks in order to edit them. Occasionally I'm able to highlight the text I need, but usually I keep getting new type layers instead. I know it should not be this difficult, but as soon as I select the text with the cursor, I get a new, empty text box.It doesn't seem to matter if I am in the layers or edit mode.
I may not be the most technically advanced Adobe user, but I'm not stupid. What the heck am I doing wrong? Can someone please steer me right?

    Try this on for size:
    Type Tool Tips for Photoshop
Most folks understand how to create text in Photoshop. You select the Type Tool from the Toolbox, or you tap the "T" key on your keyboard. Then, in the Character Palette you set the attributes for font, color, size, etc. A simple click in your document window will mark the spot where you may begin typing unbounded "point" text. Or, you click and drag in your document window to create a paragraph text box. Type out your text, then tap your "Enter" key to commit the text to its new layer.
It's pretty straightforward, and Photoshop offers a decent set of tools to adjust how your text looks. One hitch that long-timers will tell you about, though: It's generally accepted that Photoshop isn't the best application to be using if you have to have to create a lot of text because it doesn't have all of the adjustment functions necessary to produce large amounts of professional-quality text. Well, the real world being what it is, sometimes, and for some users, Photoshop is the only application they have to work with; might as well make the best of it, right?
So, once you have text entered onto a layer in your document, how do you then reselect iteither all of it or just a portion and navigate through it easily? What follows will answer some of those questions.
Note: The keyboard shortcuts that follow assume you are using a Mac. If you're using Windows, substitute the CTRL key for "Command."
Double-Click on the boxed 'T' thumbnail on the desired Text Layer in the Layers Palette. This will select and highlight all of the text on that layer.
Then, if you want, you can use some keyboard shortcuts to move the "Blinking Bar" Type Tool cursor through the text.
Assuming that your text is enclosed in a click-and-dragged out paragraph text box--When all text is highlighted:
"Home" key will move cursor to the beginning of first line of text.
"End" key will move cursor to the end of last line of text. When text is NOT highlighted, but cursor is flashing within the text:
"Home" key moves cursor to the beginning of the line it's in.
"End" key moves cursor to the end of the line it's in.
Command + "Home" moves cursor to beginning of first line of text.
Command + "End" moves cursor to end of the last line of text.
Shift + "Home" selects text from cursor position to the beginning of the line it's in.
Shift + "End" selects text from cursor position to the end of the line it's in.
Shift + Command + "Home" selects text from cursor position to the beginning of the first line of text.
Shift + Command + "End" selects text from cursor position to the end of the last line of text.Arrow keys can also be used to select text in various ways. When your cursor is flashing within the text:
Shift + Right Arrow cumulatively selects text one character or space at a time, from cursor position, progressing toward the end of the text.
Shift + Left Arrow cumulatively selects text one character or space at a time, from cursor position, progressing toward the beginning of the text.
⇒ Add the Command key to select whole words at a time, in either direction.
Shift + Up Arrow selects text from cursor position back to the next line above the cursor.
Shift + Down arrow selects text from cursor position forward to the next line below the cursor position.
⇒ Add the Command key to select text starting from the cursor position, and accumulating either back to the beginning of the first line, or forward to the end of the last line.
That covers most of what (or more than) you need to know to navigate through and highlight text. There are some other key combos, and now that you have an idea of what to do, I'll let you experiment and discover them on your own.
    Type Tool Visual Indicators
Keep a close eye on your Type Tool cursor as you move it near to and away from a hunk of text in your document window.
When you see it as a plain old "I-Bar" cursor⇒
⇒...that means that it's ready to select a position within that text, or to select a hunk of that text.
    When you see a "boxed I-Bar" cursor⇒
⇒...that means your cursor is outside of the selectable area for the current text, and is ready for you to click (to start right in typing some unbounded point text) or click-n-drag (to create a paragraph text box). This will, of course, create a new text layer.
How can you get a visual indicator of where that selectable area for current text begins and ends without blindly moving your Type Tool cursor around the text? Double-Click on the "Boxed-T" thumbnail in the Layers Palette. The text for that layer will become highlighted in your document window. See the black area that surrounds the text? That shows you the actual space occupied by the characters. If your Type Tool cursor is inside this area, it will display the plain "I-Bar" cursor. If it's outside of that area, it will display the "Boxed I-Bar" cursor.
Want to FORCE Photoshop to create a new Type Layer, even though you're seeing the plain I-Bar cursor?
Hold the SHIFT key, then either click, or click-n-drag out a paragraph text box.

  • Type mask of item in color is grayscale?

I'm trying to make a mask of some bold type (like the example of the tiger in the masks section of the Motion 5 manual.) I can get the image to fit within the confines of the type, but it is in grayscale. The image that I'm using is colorful and I've tried every variable in the inspector to try to bring the color to life.
    Here's how I did it:
I applied an image mask to the type layer.
Then I dragged the layer of the graphic image to the well of the mask.
As I said, it works but is gray. Thanks in advance.
    -steve

Masks are either going to be "alpha" (transparency/opacity) or luminance (shade of grey.)
You stated you added the Image Mask to the text and dragged the image into the mask source (and probably changed the Source Channel to luminance, which will produce the greyscale imaging.)
To create "image-filled" text, you need to add the Image Mask to the tiger (or other image) and drag the text onto the mask. That way, your image will be masked by the text.

  • File types won't associate with Photoshop CS2

I have installed Photoshop CS2 as a part of the Video Production Suite. I am having difficulty associating my image file types to PS CS2. Windows defaults to its image viewer and will not change in the Folder Options in Windows. How can I do this within Photoshop?
When I installed from the DVDs I was not presented with the File Association Window, as the the Help file indicates.
    Thanks!

check edit preferences in bridge. there's some file handling prefs in there. set cs2 to handle the images that you want it to.

  • Type tool is activating Quick Mask? (I don't want it to!)

Somehow I must have activated a command that enters a Mask mode when I try to use the Type tool. Clicking the Quick Mask icon in the Toolbar has no bearing on turning this on or off. I'm going a little crazy. Help, please?

You probably have the Type Mask tool activated. Press Shift+T to cycle through the tools in the group, to get back to the regular Type tool.

  • Entire image turns black when using the type tool in Photoshop CC

When I create a text layer, the whole image turns black.  If I enter the text blindly, I will see the expected results when I finish and click on another tool.  If I try to edit the text layer, everything turns black again.  I am not using the type mask tool.  I can select and move the layer and I can blend the layer; I just can't see what I am typing.
    Using Windows 8

I had the same problem and the update of the video card driver did not help - only after changing the settings in photoshop under "Preferences >> Performance >> Advanced settings >> Basic" the problem was solved

  • Is 3D type included in Photoshop CS6 in Creative Cloud subscription?

At a previous job, I used to be able to do 3D type in Photoshop CS2, but that may have been due to a plug-in, I'm not sure.
At my current job, I have a Creative Suite CS6 Creative Cloud subscription and I was watching a tutorial to refresh my memory about doing 3D type.
Now, whenever I try to create 3D, either directly from the text, or from a rasterized version, all the 3D options in the menus are grayed out. And the 3D button doesn't appear in my options bar as it does in the tutorial video.
Is this another feature that is not available the Cloud version of CS6 or am I missing something?

3D can be disabled on older OSes (XP) and if your video card doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

  • Why is AI/ID CS5 unable to read same fonts as CS2?

I have upgraded to CS5 from CS2 and find Frutiger type created in CS2 files cannot be read by CS5. I open an existing file, click update and a dialogue box tells me Frutiger cannot be found on my system. The Frutiger is in Font Agent Pro library as both Postscript type 1 and as Open type.
FAP has verified the Frutiger, FAP displays the fonts, they are definitely switched on. Font Doctor has passed them as OK and I have smashed the font cashes. Both AI and InD CS5 fail to read the fonts. Thinking that it may be the updating process of legacy docs which was at fault, I opened new documents. In the AI Font menu, Frutiger has the black diamond next to it. With InDesign, the Frutiger is simply not listed in the font menu. I am running CS5 on Leopard 10.5.8 on a 2.8GHz intel core duo iMac.
If I go to my other volume with Tiger 10.4.11 that has CS2 which created the files, I am able to open Adobe applications and files with Frutiger displayed perfectly. So what has Adobe done!
Can anyone tell me what is going on and how this problem can be fixed?

Tried that Bob and it made no difference. I converted the PS to Open type with FontXchange but FAP did not recognise them, perhaps because they were faulty in the first place! I Ran Font Doctor again and it showed problems with the Resource Forks and requested removal. I ran FAP again to verify fonts and this time identified them as "Fonts with Errors"
Since these fonts are functioning under CS2 I conclude that OSX font refinements are making these fonts obsolete due to changes in Creator code/File type details. I cannot understand why PS fonts should be a problem but you may well know something I do not.
I shall try a Utility called Font Shuffler which allows these file types to be changed or repaired. Thank you for the quick response Bob and I shall keep this post open until I get a fix.
    Cheers.

  • Type Creates as bitmap not vector

Working in CS5.5 (Photoshop 5.1), new text is created as crude bitmap instead of vector.  Illustrator creates type in vector.  Fireworks (never really use) created higher resolution raster type.
Made a few of the changes in the self help suggestions, but it's not crashing.  Is this a reinstall issue.  I upgraded from CS4

Your using either the Horizontal or Vertical Type Tool (one of the first two on the list) and not one of the Type Mask Tools (the bottom two on the list)?
You have Anti-alias set to something other than None?

  • Help with the horizontal mask tool ,please?

I am still using the trial version of PSE 8.  I have read the help section on creating & using the type mask tool.  I also looked at the creating type mask tutorial.  Hoewever, it does not work for me.  I want to use a photo (like the zebra stripes in the tutorial).  The font used in the tutorial is Stencil Std. and I don't have that one.  I set the font size to 100, but what is typed isn't even close. The font style in the tutorial is set on bold.  Mine is set on regular and I can't the menu to drop down to change it.  What am I doing wrong?

You need to choose a really fat, chunky font, and set the size as large as it needs to be, which may be much bigger than 100 pts. Bold is available as a faux style via the options bar settings but it only appears in the menu if there is an actual bold font (in other words, if you are using a font which doesn't have a true bold style you may be able to fake it, but you won't see the name as myfont bold).
