Type of camera

I want to step up to a new camera to use and edit with. I have tried to get answers from salesmen and they seem clueless. At this time I edit on a Macbook Pro with iMovie HD6 and Final cut Pro 5.1.4. I use various Sony mini dv cams (am a teacher and have access to school cams). I am very confused as to what will work with what..HD..Hard Drives..Memory sticks..1081???? Sometime in the next year I will purchase a new Mac laptop, but first the camera. I am leaning toward the SONY HDR-FX1 HDV but don't know if that will work with what I have. Can someone give me some help. I would dearly appreciate it!

Sony probably upgraded the VX 2100, but I've used the VX 2000 a bit over the last three years and I don't particularly like it. If you're going to stay with DV I would suggest the Canon XL series. I've been using the XL1s for 6 to 7 years now and the difference between that it and the VX 2000 is night and day. The picture is way better on the Canon, the lens is way nicer (which is interchangeable, by the way), and its progressive scan is leaps and bounds better than the VX 2000.
Canon now has the XL2, which I've only held once or twice so I can't recommend that as much, but I would suggest Canon any day of the week. But then again, maybe the VX 2100 is a lot better than the previous version, so try it out if you can. And of course, if you can afford it, David's pick of the Panasonic HVX 200 is spot on. That's a great camera.

What type of camera is best?

I am starting to do graphic design. I know I need to get a decent camera in case a client needs pics of his business, work or whatever in the print ad. my question is what type of camera do I need and how many MP should I have without getting way more than I need.

I not only work in graphic design, but I shoot professional sports photography. I can tell you that you will not need to spend a lot on a camera to take static photos. In fact, you probably won't even need to get an SLR, although it might be worth it if you choose to shoot moving objects in the future.
Currently, I have a Canon EOS1D that I use for sporting events, but something like that is flat out overkill for what you would need. I also have a Canon A700, which looks much like a standard pocket point and shoot digital camera, but it's actually a hybrid, which means that you can make several manual adjustments as you would on any more expensive SLR. The camera is 6mp and 6X optical zoom, so the resolution is high. Quite honestly, unless you're making posters, much over 6mp is overkill. What you want to watch for is the optical zoom number. A good MP number and Optical number is what you're looking for. Pay no attention to digital zoom as that is meaningless. We took that camera to Greece and got amazing photos, better than anything my EOS1D can take.
Other things to consider if you're buying a camera for static shooting.
VIEW FINDER: Most Canon cameras come with a view finder. While hardly used, if you're in bright sunlight, you might not be able to see the LED screen. I used this a lot in Greece as there was a lot of bright light and not many shady areas to shoot from. Many Nikon cameras of this style do not come with view finders, although Nikon makes a top-notch camera as well.
FLASH: If you're shooting indoors for studio shots or product shots, you will want a flash attachment. The smaller camera usually don't come with these. The on-camera flash will not be good enough for these purposes. Again, depends on what you're shooting.
The small hybrids will run you in the $200-$500 range, depending on your options. If you want the whole gammut, flash attachments, SLR capability, and a variety of lenses to choose from, and the ability to shoot motion, you will need to spend a little more. But, Canon has released a number of excellent lower cost SLRs the past four years. Look at the EOS Rebel lines. I've owned a Rebel and it worked amazing, even for sports photos. Rebels run in the $500-$900 range.
If you're thinking the smaller, hybrid type cameras would work best for you, I would suggest checking out Crutchfield.com and BestBuy.com and looking through their Canon lines to see what might interest you. Crutchfield has excellent customer service and knowledgeable staff, so they can answer questions that most Best Buy employees won't know.
If you want to take a larger step up and give yourself more options, try B&H Photo (bhphotovideo.com) and select SLR Cameras, then Canon. If you want something above and beyond the Rebel line and money isn't really an issue, you can choose from the EOS 40D, 50D and beyond ($1,300 and up). The one I'm looking at is the EOS1-Ds Mark III, but it's way out of my price range at the moment - $6,500! That one is the sports photog's dream.

Does anyone yet know when RAW files can be dowloaded to Lightroom from Nikon D750?

Lightroom supports this camera's RAW photos. Use Lightroom 5.7.1

How do I find the type of camera used in FCPX

I'm trying to figure out for grading purposes (FilmConvert Pro) what model camera was used. It is either a 5D MK2 or 7D, but I don't see anyway of locating it in the metadata...is it even there? If not, is there anyway to locate it?

Yeah, that's the first thing I tried. All it says is EOS Camera, not the model. I have tried all the various views in the info tab. Any other way?

What type of camera to purchase

I am looking for a camera to purchase for taking photos of my children playing and do sports. Like Karate, Cross Country, and Baseball. Plus everyday activites

For children playing and sports, the biggest thing to consider is the camera needs to stop the action and react quickly. Point and shoots don't normally do either very well, so if you are serious about it and want keeper shots, a DSLR is going to generally do better for several reasons:
- faster autofocus typically
- faster repsonse in general - you press the shutter release and things happen immediately - no lag
- higher ISO while still getting decent quality - higher ISO means faster shutter speeds which means stopping the action in a wider variety of lighting situations - blurry shots are not so great
the good news is that entry/mid level DSLRs are getting pretty killer features lately.

Oracle apps data type number came over to disco as varchar

created custom foler ( fnd_flex_values_vl) using sql, one of DFF item ( original data type is number) shows as varchar. Anybody knows how to convert this to number , I tried to_number but still shows as text in Desktop.

I'm now starting to look at Palm device for the very first time. Can somebody please post a list of all Palm devices that have a built-in camera? From a quick search, it doesn't seem like there are many. Is there some master list of ALL Bluetooth devices (digital cameras, video cameras, Palm devices)?

Can only open some JPEG files in Camera Raw through Bridge CS3

I'm running Bridge CS3 version 2.0.0.975. I always edit my JPEG files through Camera Raw in Bridge CS3. I only have to Right-Click on the file and select "Open in Camera Raw...". However, I've come into a situation where some jpg files will not open this way; the option is not even there.
I have made sure to tick the box in preferences under Behavior "Double-Click Edits Camera Raw Settings in Bridge", and also tick the box under Thumbnails -> Performance and File Handling "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF Files.
These files were originally 16bit Grayscale TIFF files, but I changed them to RGB 8bit JPEG files.
Also, I know the program works because I navigate to an older photo I worked which is a JPEG and the "Open in Camera Raw..." option is there when I Right-Click, but then I navigate back to the image I want to edit, and the option is not there.

That's a fundamental problem right there, and a clue in all this. You should be able to see JPEGs in the Open As Camera Raw dialog.
What happens if you type in the name?
I'm almost convinced you have a file named .jpg but with a different image format inside. Can you put one of these files online for others to try to open?

I am looking to do news broadcasts for my website. I was looking into Panasonic GS-500, GOOD CAMERA, discontinued. I don't like the GS320 as it doesn't include a mic or headphone input. So I have no choice but to spendaround a thousand dollars for a 3CCD or CMOS camera that can shoot good broadcast web news segments.
I have narrowed my choice to three camera's that have mic, firewire, essential for VC3 but I can't decide. I don't know if they are compatibile with the software, need help from the experts.

Lightroom not reading correct data for Lens and Camera Serial Number

Hi you all.
Recently got Lightroom, and I'm so impressed - I never imagined image organizing and adjustment could be this easy and at the same time very advanced.
I have a problem, however. Lightroom (and Adobe Bridge, too) does not correctly read the EXIF data of Lens type and Camera Serial Number.
The first ~50 images I took and imported turned out correctly and displayed my serial number and lens (18-55 mm Canon) inside Lightroom.
But now, whenever I import photos into Lightroom or view them with Bridge, they all display "Unknown Lens" and "Unknown Camera Serial Number".
At first I thought that maybe the camera didn't correctly record this data on to the photos anymore for some reason, but a comparison using EXIFToolGUI shows that the metadata is EXACTLY the same as in the photos that display this info in Lightroom correctly.
I have not done any changes to either my camera (Canon EOS-350D / Digitial Rebel XT) or lens (the kit lens, 18-55 mm Canon).
It seems that for some reason, Lightroom has stopped reading these two fields of metadata - all the other fields, such as aperture and shutter speed, all display correctly.
I also tried to reimport the photos into Lightroom, but it didn't help. Neither did "Synchronize Folder" -> "Scan for metadata updates".
What should I do? I'd like my lens information do display correctly, as I'll buy a new lens soon.
I have attached one of the photos that Lightroom doesn't read the data correctly from. Try importing it into your Lightroom, and see if how the info displays.

Are these jpgs or RAW? I have only edited metadata on jpgs.
It looks like Vista's import stripped out all the makernotes. I didn't look at your file but that seems to be what happened. Be warned, Photoshop CS2 also strips out makernotes!
Now how to fix the problem. If you want to edit the metadata on files already loaded into LR, you need to write out your metadata to the files first, then edit the metadata, then read the new metadata into LR. This is scarey for me, so I always make sure my backup is up to date on the images first.
What to do... You probably can't put back all of the makernotes, so what to do to get the lens information in. I don't know if putting back in the makernote LensType would trigger LR to reconsider its lens information. I don't know. If it had a real lens name, my guess would be no because it would have an XMP::Lens field which would override. But maybe unknown lens doesn't have this field and it would re-read the makernotes.
The other solution is to forget about makernotes for these images and put the exact text you want into XMP::Lens. I think that's the "easy" way.
In either case, you will have to become familiar with exiftoolGUI or exiftool itself. I use the command line exiftool but it looks like you can edit multiple files with exiftoolGUI. Select your files, click the edit thingy (^) under XMP, choose various, and there is lens. Put in the text you want.
I would do this with one file first. If the lens shows up after you read the new metadata into LR, you know you have it right.
Note, exiftool can write backup files for each file. This makes too much of a mess for me. I prefer to copy the directory first (I have copies anyway, I just have to make sure the backups are up to date).
Good luck! I'm struggling with a similar situation where the same lens used by two different cameras is coming out with a different name. I need to go back and "fix" the names in the images already imported, and then develop my procedure for setting a single unique name before I load new images into LR. Not too much of a problem because I'm loading in GPS information anyway... What's another call to exiftool...

How do I get a camera tab on my Photo Booth

I have an iMac OS X 10.4.11. and my version of Photo Booth does not have a Camera Tab for me to connect an additional camera, it only allows me to use it's own built in camera. Is there any way to get an update to my Photo Booth so I can get this tab? I have checked Apple updates but I can't seem to find anything for Photo Booth. Thanks Much, JK

Other users have reported that they can trick Photobooth into looking for another camera by first launching another application that 'grabs' the built-in camera, then they launch PhotoBooth with their additional camera. It's a workaround that apparently works with some, but not all types of cameras. I have not tried this method so please update with the results.

Camera Raw 4.4 doesn't work when hosted in Bridge

How stupid is THAT!? ACR 4.4, hosted in Bridge, gets me black images with a white pattern for raw files and solid-black images for DNG files. So are thumbnails displayed in Bridge. Switching back to ACR 4.3.1 resolves the issue. So does hosting ACR 4.4 in Photoshop. Strangely, a raw file opened with ACR 4.4 in Photoshop now offers three profiles (rather than one): "ACR 2.4," "ACR 4.4," and "Embedded." What is "Embedded" supposed to mean? And why does ACR 4.4 in Bridge, displaying a solid-black image, offer "Embedded" only but neither "ACR 2.4" nor "ACR 4.4"?
Anyone experiencing the same problems? For now, I am back to ACR 4.3.1 :(
Windows XP SP2, Minolta MRW files (and DNG files created from those via DNG Converter 4.3.1) from Konica-Minolta 7D.

Yes, sure. Here we go:
1st screenshot---A folder with MRW files. The files have been augmented with metadata a few weeks ago, using Bridge with ACR 4.3.1 installed. The XMP files are there along with the MRW files. Please note that with ACR 4.4 installed, Bridge now says, "Supports XMP: no". Also note that Bridge also grayes out the "Open in Camera Raw ..." instruction from the menu. The cache for the current folder has been purged and re-built; so has the entire cache (have tried both).

2nd screenshot---A folder with DNG files. The files have been created from the MRW files in the previous screenshot a few weeks ago, using Adobe DNG Converter 4.3.1. The small thumbnails are there, but the preview window shows nothing but a solid-black box. Note that Bridge recognizes the XMP support here. Also note that exposure data and focal length are displayed under each thumbnail (not so in the 1st screenshot, even though the preferences are the same). Bridge will allow to open these files in Camera Raw hosted by Bridge (not visible in this particular screenshot). By the way, DNG files are way too pink---they always were (i. e. it's not an ACR-4.4-specific problem).

3rd screenshot---The plot thickens! Another folder of MRW files. This is the folder I was playing with yesterday. For some reason, it does display the thumbnails properly now---it didn't yesterday (cache not yet re-built after switching from ACR 4.3.1 to ACR 4.4; I took this screenshot before the other two above) but the preview window already is defective. So is XMP support.

4th screenshot---This is the same folder as in screenshot #3 after re-building the local folder's cache. Unlike yesterday (and unlike screenshot #1 ... go figure!), the thumbnails are there but all of sudden, most of them show a red "MF" (which I HATE!), and the preview windows shows an image but in a distorted aspect ratio. The metadata as well as XMP support are still missing. The "MF" seems to indicate manual focus (and indeed I did focus most of these shots manually)---but I detest this obtrusive way of indication! I never saw this before in any of my shots. Please make it go away!

7th screenshot---Now this is what happens when actually opening a DNG file with Camera Raw hosted in Bridge. You'll get a solid-black image. Note the histogram that is reflecting a solid-black image, too. Also note the contents of the profile selection combo-box which offers "Embedded" only but neither "ACR 2.4" nor "ACR 4.4" (the Konica-Minolta Dynax 7D is supported since ACR 2.4). In contrast to this, ACR 4.4 will open both MRW files and their DNG files just fine when hosted in Photoshop.

Displaying Custom Content Types

Short Version
I have created custom content types that has a few properties that are complex. One is an image type and another is a collection of another custom content type. I am unable to display or access these items.
Long Version
I have a custom content type with the following properties
It is called PageThreeColumn
PageTitle : String
LeftNav : String
RightNav : String
HeroImage : image (complext type that came with weblogic)
ContentCollection: Collection of type ContentPlaceholder
The other custom type ContentPlaceHolder
Type : String
HtmlContent : Binary
I created a content presenter view (wlp-templete-config.xml) and I am able to get a simple string property to be displayed.
So I can do the following
<cm:getProperty name="LeftNav" node="${node}"/>
And I get the expected String back.
What I am unable to do is get to anything that is more complicated then the simple datatypes. For instance the Image data type.
I have tried node.HeroImage but it does not display correctly.
I appreciate any help you can give and would definately like a link to an example of displaying content that is not as trivial as most of the examples.

Or maybe an example of more complicated uses of the JSP files in the:

/portlets/wlp/contentpresenter/templates/wlp-default/outer
All of the examples I found were ver trivial. Basicly showing a very simple example but nothing using a content type that is more complicated in the non-primary properties then strings.
