  • Powerade spilled on Laptop, still works, but lights/DVD drive stay on when laptop is shut off?

    PLEASE READ:
So my sister spilled some amounts of Powerade onto my HP (Pavilion DV7-3165dx ) laptop (2 years old), it spreaded a little(?)on the keyboard (not sure if it penetrated through?) but we managed to immediately turn it over, turned it off ( It dididn't shut itself off, yet), took the charger off, and then the battery later.
While upside-down, I dried it with a blow dryer for a little while (on cool setting).
Then I let it sit on an upside down V shape for like 2 days with a small fan pointed at it. Then let it sit for another day.
I turned it on yesterday (after inspecting it and everything, I even opened the dvd drive by poking through the hole to open it manually, this is the side where it mostly spilled, I looked at the CD drive and smelled it and saw no trace of Powerade residue, so I assumed the motherboard diidn''t even get wet at all ), everything was working flawlessly...
But I noticed when It's turned off, but has some power source,(such as the battery or the charger plugged in ) the indicator lights (stop, forward, wireless button etc) and the light on the DVD drive would otherwise stay/go on and off (flicker) sometimes and you could open the DVD drive by just pressing the button!
Why is this? It seems the electricity from the charger or battery is somehow powering the lights?
    Is this a bad thing?
I've tried power draining (disconnecting every power source and holding down the power button), but it doesn't seem to work?
I've also heard worse post laptop-spill where it resulted on the laptop acting weirdly but after a few days it was gone and working completely ....so is it possible there is still some liquid in there?
    -Thank you

It ain't good. The only way to check fully how far the liquid went is to remove the keyboard and look around under it. I think by now it is dry but I worry more about the sugar residue on electronic circuits. Here is a link to the Manual:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01859666.pdf
You are out of warranty anyway so it cannot hurt to remove the keyboard. Be careful with the ribbon cables. Remove the keyboard and wipe away any spill residue you see with rubbing alcohol and let dry thoroughly.

  • What type of dvd drive enclosure do I need?

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro PRE unibody that I put a solid state drive in the standard HD and moved the standard HD to the dvd drive slot.   Now its time to buy a DVD drive enclosure but I cant seem to find one/figure out exactly what to buy.
I understand I need a PATA style DVD enclosure.   As thats what I bought for a caddy for my HD to put in that slot.    But all the enclosures I see that are PATA say they're for Powerbooks and older Macs.
Does anyone have a link to an external DVD drive enclosure I can order?
    Thank you.

Thanks,  but I don't see any enclosures.  I see total dvd drives.  I have my Superdrive that still works and just need an enclosure for it.   Theres a ton of them on Amazon, just don't know which version.
Thanks for the reply.  Good to know that worst case I can buy an all inclusive setup for 60 bucks.

  • Broken DVD Drive on my Satellite M35x laptop

    Hi,
the CD-DVD Drive on my Satellite Laptop apparently is broken and I was thinking about purchasing an external CD-DVD Drive and would appreciate HELP.
In the event that I need to RE-Install Windows, would I be able to do this with an External CD Drive since I believe I need to boot from the CD to begin the reinstall and I am not sure if the Laptop will "recognize" the external drive?
    Thank you,
    Bob

Hi Barrie, I purchased a (used) Drive for a M35X Laptop and to a non techie, it looked just like the one that was inside the Laptop but when I slide the replacement DVD-CD Drive in the opening, it did NOT "click-in" (connect to the MB) and wehn i turned the Laptop on and ent to My Computer, their was NO DVD-CD identified.
I tried install new HW but again, the Drive was not recognized so my deductions are that the Drive may look just like the other one but it is not meant for this system, the drive could be OK but the connection to the MB is defected, their is something not functioning properly on the MB or most likely, I don't know what I am talking about and need ALL the H-E-L-P that I can get!
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • G50-70: empty DVD-drive clicking and freezing other drives for about 30 seconds all the time

Hello board. Big problem. Seem to be the only one having this after searching the board:
Brand new G50-70: When using OS from the SSD or using OS from the SSD and doing things with a USB-drive, the empty internal DVD-drive making clicking sound and sometimes freezing SSD read/write operation for about 30 seconds but all the time freezing USB-storage read/write operation for about 30 seconds.
When freezing there's always clicking. But when clicking there's not always freezing except when using USB-storage.
    OS is Win81-64.
An example scenario: connect USB stick, open terminal, type diskpart, dvd-drive clicks and freezes opening of diskpart for about 30 seconds, then the same may or may not happen when entering commands like clear the stick and format the stick.
Any clues, why I have this issue? Thank you very much for reading.

    hi georg43,
it's possible that there's a software running on startup that's accessing the ODD when the machine is being used (especially if the ODD LED blinks when it's being accessed)..
To check, you can perform a clean boot to temporarily disable apps & services running on startup. If the machine functions properly on a clean boot, you will need to enable the startup services/programs that you have disabled in groups of two or three (trial and error) to find the culprit. You can start by enabling the lenovo services and apps first followed by the Intel ones and observe.
In addition, you can also try to disable the DVD-drive under device manager and observe.

    Hi there,
Thanks to all. I've checked ebay already. Maybe these products are not available in Germany. I'm located near frankfurt/m.
I found only some "auctions" in UK with fixed price starting at 20 pounds or so. Nothing available in Germany at all! really exciting.
It would be very nice if one of you could provide me some links to these real auctions you found. ebay and google found nothing.

  • Using a Mac's DVD drive to load a DVD on Windows XP

I have a Windows XP machine which does not have a DVD drive, and a Mac laptop running Tiger which does - and some ethernet cable!
Is it possible to network the two computers together and use the Mac's DVD drive to access and run the DVD on the Windows computer? If so, how would I go about doing this? I have no experience of file sharing over Windows.
    Thanks for the help

    Hi Thomas,
I don't think you can, but it won't hurt to try... well, it won't hurt the Mac anyway.
If all else fails, you could try making a bootable image of it, there are several XP utilities for that, and this NetBoot might work...

Where can I download the drivers for the cd/dvd drive for my A210 laptop I checked the drivers download page on the toshiba website but there's nothing?
    Thanks for any help

The ODD driver is a part of the Windows OS.
The Windows uses the common Microsoft driver and therefore there is no driver on the Toshiba page.
But why you want to install such driver?
Isnt the CD/DVD drive listed in the device manager?

    Okay, let's check the following:
    >> Do you see the DVD drive listed in "Computer" explorer? double click on it to open.
    >> Do you see the DVD drive listed in the device manager??
(Click Start and type "device" in the search field, then select Device Manager >> check for CD/DVD drive listing.)
    >> Is the DVD drive listed in the BIOS?
(Restart Your PC and start tapping F10 key, once you are in setup screen go to boot options, check for the listed devices)
also please download and run this program:

  • DVD drive on laptop disappeared, among other problems.

My laptop (HP Pavilion dv6921la, running Vista) started getting driver errors "without apparent explanation", first, the game controller devices cracked and the axis for movement became permanently tilted to the right. No apparent solution. No explanation for the sudden screw up.
Later, DVD burner stops working completely. I check the drivers and there's a generic CD reader driver that failed to do anything. Coupled with the enormous heat the laptop gave (the fan sounded like a hair dryer), it was time for a reformat.
So I just backed up everything with a measly 2GB SD card and used "reset to factory settings" on the laptop. Started trying apps, reinstalling things, etc. All good, no more horrendous heat, things go faster, drives work, (managed to get a glimpse of the DVD driver on the Device Manager, it was a Pioneer lightscribe drive) but when I plugged my mouse on one of the 3 USB ports it said that "the driver wasn't installed correctly" and whatever I try to plug in that port fails. Windows tells me "click here to check the driver" and it shows said port being stuck on "UNKNOWN DEVICE" and recognizing anything plugged in as such. At least the other ports work correctly.
I start copying a game from a backup DVD so I can try the gamepad. I check the gamepad, doesn't work on the same port. Switch it to the next one and it started tilting again. I unplugged it and tried again and now it worked great.
OK, so I return to the DVD to copy some other things and LOL, the drive again disappeared from the system, in the course of around 30 minutes between I copied the things and returned to copy more.
I system restore'd and it didn't do anything. And the laptop was starting to heat up again. Desperate, I returned to factory settings once again. With the system in a total factory state, I tested the drive: It wasn't there again. The USB port still didn't work. I'm inclined to believe the physical drive has failed, but I don't know what I need to know to pick a new one. (do I have to open the laptop to check what kind of connection uses and all that? Or if you know the in-depth technical specs of this model, can tell me?) And I suppose the USB port is dead, so I'm gonna need an USB hub. (and a cooling system...) If not, any suggestions?
I'm gonna do a last test with a Linux CD.

Update: The BIOS didn't detect the drive, didn't appear in the CMOS setup utility. The laptop was frozen in the startup screen until I removed the Linux CD. Only after that I could boot up Windows.
So I infer the drive is dead. Maybe as a result of the horrendous heat? Right now I'm getting a lot of bad heat by running a small game.

  • CD/DVD drive not recognized on my HP laptop

Hi all, Sorry to post yet another thread on the issue but I've tried just about everything that I've read up on I think.  I have a HP Pavilion DV6809wm, running Vista 32 bit.  I go into Device Manager and there is no Optical drive listed.  I have removed the drive itself, rebooted and reinserted the drive and to no avail.  I looked for lower and upper filters in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} but did not have any to delete.  I also tried running Microsoft Fix-it on my computer and all it could tell me was there was no drive found.  I searched for drivers for my optical drive (HP AD-7560A) but could not install them because there is no drive.  I am up to date on my Windows updates and even uninstalled all of my Sims 3 packs because I thought an update to that was causing a conflict or something.  I found and deleted a SecuRom (?) folder in my registry that someone posted should be deleted that games sometimes install to prevent burning or something, I can't remember.  Still no optical drive.  I'm sure it's a software issue because sometimes (rarely) it does work briefly but then goes unresponsive.  I found that when I manually remove the drive and insert it, it tends to at least open and close but is still not listed in device manager.  I have thought about buying a new drive but am not sure if that will even fix the issue.  Please, any insight would be appreciated at this point!

im having the same problem with a computer i was given to fix. i still cannot get it to function.. it is completely unresponsive when windows is loaded.. doesnt even eject as if there wasnt any power to the drive.. when i restart the computer i do get power to the drive while bios is loading and i am able to open the tray with the eject button but as soon as the windows logo appears  it becomes completely dead as if there is no power.. i have booted to windows without the drive inserted and then insert the drive and i am able to get the drive to eject via the eject button but it does not read any discs..
i have tried booting to the OS disc but when i get to the boot menu the only option available is the internal HD.. all settings are correct in bios to boot to the internal drive but never gives me that option..
I know the dvd drive functions as i tried it in another laptop and it works fine..
I would like some insight on this as well.. im just starting to believe there is something wrong with it internally on the motherboard or somehing..
I have also tried booting to an external dvd drive and no luck there either
I have also updated the bios hoping that would solve the problem but that did not help either.. i have tried the registry trick as well and no luck.. even besides that the drive should boot from bios regardless if something is screwy in the os
