Type of Memory

I have a bonehead question or two. I am upgrading a Wallstreet for my son -- 266 mHz, 64 MB, 14" screen, 1GB Cache -- and am wondering if I can use the old/no longer used memory from my G4 Titanium in the Wallstreet. I suspect not -- but I just have to ask because I'm not clear on what info I've found. I'm trying to upgrade the memory to 192 MB so it will run 10.2.
Speaking of which... does anyone know the best (i.e., least expensive) place to buy the full 10.2 CD's? I have the original 10.2 disks that came with my (now dead) Titanium, but I understand I can't use those on the Wallstreet. Is that right?
And... if I have to buy memory... will these work?

Thanks for any info!

Lynne,
There are several points to consider regarding the memory. Since you want to raise the memory in the Wallstreet to 192MB, you have a 32MB module in the lower slot of the Wallstreet...same as my original Wallstreet. If your Titanium is a 400/500MHz, its 128MB module should work in the Wallstreet per this OWC page showing a 128MB module for the Wallstreet also supporting the 400/500MHz Titanium.

When you move to a 256MB for the early iMac, Wallstreet, and Lombard, its architecture is different than most modules. As Hardy Geer mentioned, the 256MB module from his Titanium also worked in his Wallstreet, but this type of swap is seldom successful. If you decide on a 256MB module (and I would highly recommend it), I would spend the extra dollars and get this one from OWC:

Regarding your Titanium Jag CDs: If your Titanium came with a "Restore" CD, it will not boot your Wallstreet...it will only restore to the correct Titanium. If it also came with a set of Jaguar CDs with the name "Jaguar" on the label, those are just a retail pack of Jaguar CDs and will install on any compatible Mac. If your Install 1 and Install 2 Jaguar CDs have the name "Titanium" on the label, they still may be just a retail pack of Jaguar CDs that have been relabeled. You will know if you can install Jaguar from your CDs (not the Restore) if they will boot the Wallstreet. OSX is hardware-neutral, meaning all software required for all machines is installed on all machines (with a few exceptions), so if your Jaguard CDs will boot the Mac, it will install OSX.
Question: How large is the Wallstreet's HD, how much free space does it have, and do you still want to run 9.x?
If you don't want to buy another memory module, install the 128MB from the Titanium and see how it works. You can then try booting your Jaguar CDs...32MB currently installed will just not cut it.
Please be aware that the Wallstreet can sometimes be cranky and difficult when installing/running OSX.

  • What type of memory card should I purchase for my iMac (late 2009)?

I'd like to increase the memory on my computer, as I'm running some pretty hefty programs (Parallels with Quicken, CS6, and some architecture drafting softwares) that really bog down the processing response time. I believe that I have two slots in the back of my machine, to add memory to, but have no clue what to purchase.  I'd love to know what type of memory card I should purchase (or how to find out), in addition to the best place to buy it.
    Thank you for your feedback!
    Specs:
    iMac: 27-inch, late 2009
    Running: OSX Mountain Lion (10.8)
Processor: 3.06GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory (existing): 4GB 1067MHz DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB

    Great idea! Thanks.

  • Does type of Memory matter in a Mac?

I have a 1GB MacBook on it's way, and I was wondering, what if I we're to want to upgrade something to 2GB or even 4GB? Does it matter which brand of RAM you install, or does Apple RAM itself perform better on Mac's?

If there is no Apple RAM, than what is this? http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/wa/RSLID?nclm=1 977F78C
That's RAM that Apple has purchased from a supplier. Apple (like most computer makers) buys from "1st tier" memory manufacturers like Samsung, Micron, Hynix, Elpida, Qiomonda, or Nanya. That will typically be a module that is labelled by and has ICs identifying them as made by one of these manufacturers. For example, the 2 512 MB modules that came in my MacBook have ICs with the Hynix logo and a specific Hynix label on the module. This would be opposed to something like a Kingston memory module with (for example) Micron-identified ICs, a 3rd party circuit board, and a Kingston ID/warranty label.
I believe that Apple sold RAM carries their standard 1 year accessory warranty and/or would be covered under AppleCare if you have it. Most 3rd party memory is either warranted by the manufacturer (like Crucial) or seller (i.e. OWC buys modules, slaps their own label on them, and provides their own warranty).
If you insist on getting modules similar to what Apple buys, Crucial typically sells Micron (as their retail division) and some retailers have fully-branded Samsung modules. Most of the other 1st tier memory manufacturers don't seem to sell a whole lot that ends up in direct retail channels. They seem to prefer selling their modules directly to OEMs and their ICs to memory assemblers (Kingston for example).

  • What type of memory do I need for my MacBook pro late 2008?

I need to upgrade my memory to 4 GB.  What specific memory brand/number should I get?

    Two Late 2008 MBP's were released.  The 15" takes 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The 17" takes 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.
The 15" can be upgraded to a max of 8gb, the 17" up to 6gb.

  • What type of memory would be the best for my MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2010?

I have a Mid 2010 13" Macbook Pro and I'm going to upgrade my RAM. I know I can upgrade up to 8GB of RAM, but I was wondering what is the best "brand" and what website I should buy it from. For example, eBay, NewEgg, Amazon / PNY, Crucial, etc?  Can you guys help me out? Thanx!

No one anywhere has repeatedly bought RAM from every RAM vendor everywhere, so no one is able to answer your question on the basis of experience. My own experience has been that OWC is a 100% reliable vendor of Mac-compatible products, including RAM, at good prices, with outstanding support and a warranty you can depend on. here's the RAM you need on OWC's site:

  • What Type of Memory to use inCQ 60 Compaq Notebook PC

Is the memory DDR2 or DDR3?

The dv6500 will use 4 gigs of RAM (2 x 2 gb modules) in hardware but with 32 bit Windows you can only effectively work with 3 gb. Installing 64 bit Windows will allow use of all 4 gigs.

  • Overclocking I7 920 what type of memory ?

    Hi
Harm suggested that i get this great OCZ kit of memory with the purpose of overclocking in mind, unfortunately it is not avaible to me, but the listed Corsair kit is.. Would it still be possible to do a moderate OC with this memory, or MUST it be CAS7  ?
    OCZ 12GB Kit PC3-12800 CL7-7-7-24
    PC12800 DDR1600, CAS7-7-7-24, PlatinumZ3
    Corsair HX3X12G1600C9 6x2GB DDR3-1600
    PC12800 DDR1600, CAS 9-9-9-24
    Thanks!
    /Lars

I know this is a little late but I started looking at memory on my own.  There is no problem finding that OCZ memory in the States.  Also ZipZoomFly has it advertised at only $142, but of course there is no stock.
Incidentally I remembered this post but could not remember the title but as frustrated as I was with this Jive Software and it's lousy search tool I instead went to good old Google and it was right at the top of the list.

  • G41M-P23 - Wrong type of memory?

I recently bought a G41M-P23 motherboard, a Intel E3400 and two sticks of 2GB Kingmax RAM DRR3 1333MHz. The RAM appears to be running well at 1066MHz, however the overall system is unstable.
Could the fact that the frequencies don't match up affect the system stability? According to MSI this motherboard can support RAM running at 1333MHz in an OC mode. Can I OC the RAM without stressing the CPU too much?

It is not the mainboard that is "causing" this limitation into existance but the Chipset (or to be more precise: its memory controller).  According to Intel specifications it natively supports DDR3-800 and DDR3-1066 memory modules.  Everything faster than that means overclocking the memory controller/memory bus.

Overclocking your memory is not directly related to your processor or its frequency.  If you already have stability problems @DDR3-1066, then overclocking the memory/memory bus (or actually: overclocking as such) is probably the last thing your should engage in at the moment.

Ideal is 4 DIMMs (two DIMMs on each Riser in slots 1 and 2).

  • 790fx-gd70 Memory - which brand / type is most compatible?

I have just recently built my first PC using the MSI790fx-gd70 (thanks to some helpful advice from Svet, Bas, and Miles).  I encountered a problem early on pertaining to the memory.  I had originally purchased 1.65 volt ram and this board only supports 1.5 volts (thank you Newegg for your lack of tech specs).  And in doing some reading, it seems that this board only supports up to 1333 speeds without overclocking.  I plan to OC down the line, however i am really only interested in utilizing my PC on default settings for the time being.  A friend of mine has loaned me a 2GB stick of 1333 Wintec ram.  Of course i plan to return this to him shortly, after i have purchased my own memory.
My question is, which brand/type of memory is most compatible with this board? I have looked through the test sheet for this board and it seems as though Kingston, G Skill, OCZ, and a few others have been successful, however i am wondering what the people think.  If any of you folks have this board, could you give me a little insight on your preferences for dual channel, 1333 (since that is as high a speed i can get without OCing) ram sticks?  I would prefer to purchase 2, 4GB sticks of 1333.  any thoughts?
    Thanks all

Yeah some Cruical Ballistix would be awesome.
Anything Crucial, Kingston, or Corsair you really can't go wrong with.  I have used Kingston and Corsair on my 790FX before I got rid of it.  They both worked fine.
BTW if you are looking for Corsair XMS:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0347304  these are really good.  And if you live near a Microcenter you don't have to deal with that shipping back and forth if something is wrong.

  • N73 Memory Type

    Hi People
Got a bit confused here. My book with the phone says MiniSD card only for this phone. But when looking at the accessories on here it seems to indicate that a MicroSD will also do. The shop says MicroSD wont work!
Simple, can i use both types of memory in this phone or MiniSD only. I see some issues with size recognition in the threads on here so ill stick with one gig probably
    Thanks in advance.

Dude, my N91 has 4 GB HDD.No expansion.Although the accesories part says it suppports mmc.
Great y will stick to one GB.
Me too think miniSD and micro sds have some differences and micro sd wont work on yr N73.
