Type tool in Photoshop makes artboard go to black or flicker

I have the Creative Cloud suite and have updated programs. My only problem is Photoshop is unusable when I try to use the type tool. The image or blank pasteboard drops to black until I click-away somewhere like on layer. Click type tool on area, same issue. It has even flashed back and forth from visible background to black. It's impossible to operate like this.
Additionally, some flickering happens when I drag the marquee tool across. What is the problem? Is this to do with the fact it's 64-bit? My display says 32 bit.

And have you updated your video card drivers from the GPU maker's website? (bugs in video drivers being the most common cause of display issues)

What happened to the type tool in Photoshop CS5?

In previous versions of Photoshop, when the type tool hovered over text I could edit, it switched to just the up and down type cursor tool...and when it was over a region where I could click to create a new text layer, the cursor would show up with a little bounding box around it. Now in CS5, it is showing up as the simple up and down type tool whether I am hovered over text or not....so no way of knowing if a click is going to take me into an editable text layer, or if it is going to create a new type layer..until I actually click..
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any idea the cause, or the solution, or is it just a bug, or something that they changed for some reason?

Did you try to reset the text tool? (hit T, then right-click the tool preset icon in the Option bar, and select reset tool)
Usually, to make sure that I can create a new text layer, even if there is already some text, one can hold down the shift key to force the creation of a new text layer.

Type Tool in Photoshop CS3 Extended

Hi!
I just recieved my copy of Design Premium CS3 package from Adobe. I noticed that when I activate the Type Tool, Photoshop crashes or uses a long time to activate the tool.
I got this problem on the BETA version and thuoght it was a bug that would be fixed in the final.
Is this a bug or is it just my mac?
Got a macbook (Intel Core Duo 2Ghz).
EDIT: This is only first time I activate the type tool everytime I start Photoshop

I too am having same problem with Photoshop CS3 crashing every time I select the type tool on PowerBook G4 1GHz 1Gb RAM w/ 10.4.10. I have cleaned font cache, checked for font corruption, repaired permissions, tried other user accounts (including root), blah blah blah. CS2 version worked fine with type on same day that I removed it (following Adobe removal instructions to the letter) and installing CS3 Premium default. Fonts are all default install for Tiger and I haven't "installed" any others. I use Suitcase Fusion and everything is patched up to the hilt. I am in charge of I.T. at a large group of companies and have well over a decade of previous experience managing various prepress entities. I understand the urge to blame user error, unfortunately this time I am the user. We have 10 CS3 users here using both PPC & Intel, as well as Winblows (not a typo). For those condescending posters, please READ what these users are saying. There is an actual problem here. Besides, user shouldn't have to wear a propellor hat, you do a default install of Tiger and CS3, you ought to be able to set a line of type, period. Especially at these prices. I am getting ready to go deep on this one, if I figure out anything worthy of posting, I will holler back.

How to Enable the Type Tool in Photoshop CS5

I'd see if resetting the Type Tool works by canceling out of your type and then right clicking on the Big T in the Tool options bar and clicking on Reset Tool.

Entire image turns black when using the type tool in Photoshop CC

When I create a text layer, the whole image turns black. If I enter the text blindly, I will see the expected results when I finish and click on another tool. If I try to edit the text layer, everything turns black again. I am not using the type mask tool. I can select and move the layer and I can blend the layer; I just can't see what I am typing.
Using Windows 8

I had the same problem and the update of the video card driver did not help - only after changing the settings in photoshop under "Preferences >> Performance >> Advanced settings >> Basic" the problem was solved

Hi, When I try to use my type tool in photoshop the photograph I am trying to enter text on to goes completely black and I cannot see what I am typing. I am sure the solution must be simple but I cannot find it. I want to watermark my photos and it is turning into a bit of a problem. All the videos I have watched show that entering type should be a simple task but I click on the type tool then click on my photo to commence typing and the photo goes completely black. Any help will be very gratefully appreciated.

That sounds like it may be caused by windows 8 and the display driver installed. Check the display makers web site to make sure you have their latest windows 8 device driver installed.

Photoshop program error when type tool is selected

I've been trying to use the type tool in Photoshop and I am able to select the tool, however as soon as I place the cursor on my document, I get a program error. From there, I have to force quit the program to get out of it. I downloaded a security update for my mac yesterday, but since I haven't been using the type tool in photoshop recently, I'm not sure if that had anything to do with this issue or not. Has anyone had the same problem?

Let me clarify. I'm running Mac OS X v. 10.4.11, Photoshop CS4. The error message just says "Could not complete your request because of program error". I haven't uploaded any new fonts to my system, however, I have deleted some that were suspect of being corrupt. I cannot change fonts on the type tool because it doesn't give me a chance, the error message pops up instantly. I have reset my tools and deleted my preferences and even reinstalled Photoshop CS4 but nothing has worked.

Photoshop freezes up when trying to use the Type tool.

Each time I try to use the Type tool, my Photoshop freezes up. I have to force it to close, then start over.
It is beyond frustrating!

I would appreciate you follow the steps below and that should fix the issue for you.
Solution 1: Update Photoshop to the most recent version.
To update Photoshop:
1. Choose Help > Updates (this method is the preferred update method).
or
2. Download the most recent update from the Adobe website: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates.
Solution 2: Turn Font Preview off in Photoshop's Preferences.
In Photoshop CS6:
Choose Type > Font Preview Size.
Select None.
In Photoshop CS5 and CS4:
Choose Photoshop > Preferences > Type (Mac OS) or Edit > Preferences > Type (Windows).
Deselect Font Preview Size.
Retest your issue to determine if this solution solved the problem.
Solution 3: Remove or turn off the following fonts
The following fonts are known to cause problems when used in Photoshop:
Bustle (Mac OS only)
21kannmbn_ttf
GURAKH_S.TTF
JH_TITLES.TTF
SCREEN__.TTF

Type tool isn't working

HELP! I've been using photoshop and illustrator for years, and added text to photos plenty of times, but for some reason, i bought the new CS3, and i swear something's wrong with my type tool in photoshop. (Sorry I can't recall if i've successfully added text to a photo since i've upgraded to 10.0.1) And it works fine in illustrator.
When I open a file(i've tried 5 different ones, all different sizes, and formats) and click on the text tool now, it looks like it's going to work.. i get the I beam with the dotted box around it, but when i click on the photo all i get is a little dot the size of a period that just stays where i put it and no text goes on the page no matter how much i type. I can move the spec around but no
text. It shows up as a text layer in the layers section. I've gone up to the type selection box and tried selecting different fonts, and font sizes(making it huge incase it just was too small to show up, but that didn't make the type show up either,i've resized the photo, i've tried to reset the type tool. I tried creating a type box, when i do that I can make the box, i get the i beam, like it's going to work, but no type will go on the page. I confess, i'm don't know a lot about layers, but that's never mattered before.
FYI - I'm on an IMAC Power PC OSX 10.5.3

I'm just a novice. So i'm sorry if i'm not answering the questions correctly or dont know how to do all the suggestions you're making. .
1. sorry, my mistake, 10.5.2
2. the ppi is 72, i've tried it at 300 ppi too.
3. As to the snide comment about the teaching my friend, my point only was that I taught her how to add text to the photo over the phone and she was able to do it, but i wasn't able to add it to my own photo, so i know how to do it because i got someone else to do it with my directions, but it's not working on my program and on the same photo. I never implied, that i taught her how to use the whole program, as you quipped in your post.
Can you please explain what you mean, or how do i compare settings for fonts and images.
Also, i tried unsuccessfully to use the help menu to figure out how to reset my character palette, can you give me a couple of instructions or point me in the right direction.
****Finally, i not sure if i mentioned in my original post, or if it helps, but the type i'm trying to type on the photo is showing up on the layers in the layers menu, but it's not showing up on the actual photo. It just shows up as the spec. And the more i type the spec doesn't move(as if it was accomodating a line of type. It's just a spec that stays put. unless I click on the pointer tool and move the spec around.

Type tool anchor and pen tool problems CS4

I have been working in In-design for my classes and everything is working fine. But recently I needed to do some work in Illustrator but when I opened the program up, some of my tools seems to be slightly bugged or something.
The type tool will not make the anchor where I initially click. It creates the anchor around the center point of the type box. This is really annoying because if you have a specific grid, it will not line up to it. I have never adjusted this I don't think because now I have no clue on how to fix it!
Also, my pen tool seems to be messed up. I first create the starting point, but then when I make the second point and try to drag out the node arms to make a curve, it only has one arm! Thus, the curve never is created, so I can't draw with the pen tool, therefore I fail my classes... haha
I have a big project starting soon and any help with this odd problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for any potential help

To try to make things more clear:
When I click on the type tool, the line tool, or the rectangle tool (any tool used by clicking on a starting point 'anchor' and dragging it) if I click and drag to the bottom right, it creates a rectangle that around the center point of the bounding box. Its really freaking weird. I've asked all my design friends and they don't know either. BUT! If I click to make the initial anchor, then drag to the upper left it works as the type tool bounding box usually does. Meaning, I can make the box to conform to grid lines, or the like. The rectangle tool does this as well.
Now, the line tool is messed up as well, but a little different. When I select the anchor point and then start to drag (click then drag to the right) the anchor does not stay in place. IT GOES OFF TO THE LEFT. It is so annoying. So If I'm trying to make a line that goes from the top of the page down, the line will go down with my cursor as I drag down, but it will also go up at the same rate. Its real dumb. Any help would be great.
As for the pen tool:
I'm not a new user to Illustrator. I've been using it for years now and never seen this problem. I showed it to my professor and he had no clue. I have used CS3 and CS5 as well and both operate normally and much different from mine. I can't exactly explain it for it is that weird, but if there is any way I can reset the tool, or put it back to its defaults that would help a lot.

Type tool not working Photosop CC.

I am trying to create a watermark using the type tool in Photoshop CC. When I click on my layer using the type tool it just places a teeny tiny black box with NO cursor. Thus, I can't type anything. I have tried resetting the tool and that changed nothing. Please help! It's driving me batty.

UPDATE: So I am now seeing that when I type and then click on the layer what I typed shows up as the layer name but there is still nothing on the box. How do I view it on the box?

Problem with type tool

I am having trouble with my type tool in Photoshop cs4 on windows xp
I have looked through a few threads where people have had the same problem and tried the recommended solutions but it hasn't helped.
If i use the type tool it creates a new layer but nothing happens on my workspace, it renames the layer with what i have typed. I tried changing font, font size, font colour and canvas size, still nothing. If i use the transform tool sometimes it will give me an error saying "could not transform because the initial bounding rectangle is empty" and sometimes it it will work and i will be able to transform something that isnt there. i have reset tools like suggested in other threads but that has not changed anything.

You may have been able to solve the problem by just resettiing the Type tool.
While resetting the whole of preferences will cure all sorts of problems, you have to go through all the settings again to get them how you had them before.
Unless of course you made a copy of the entire preferences folder, to copy back in over the defaults.

Type tool not making text frame question

The type tool no longer makes a text frame when dragged in document. It does make text frame on clipboard. How do I enable type tool to make text frame? Using CS5 and Windows 7

I suspect he means pasteboard...
Is the layer locked? Can you draw other types of frames?

Exit type tool?

When using the type tool in photoshop cs6, how do you exit using a keyboard short cut? (like esc in illustrator) i dont have a numberic keypad to hit enter on, i'm using a laptop.

Ctrl/Cmd+Enter should work for you..
