Type tool not making text frame question

The type tool no longer makes a text frame when dragged in document. It does make text frame on clipboard. How do I enable type tool to make text frame? Using CS5 and Windows 7

I suspect he means pasteboard...
Is the layer locked? Can you draw other types of frames?

  • Selection and Type Tools not working in InDesign CC for Mac

I have just recently downloaded InDesign CC (I use Mac OSX.9.2) and got the World Tools plugin to typeset in different languages.
However, I am having trouble using the selection and type tools. In about the first half of the file, the type tool displays the pointer/dashed box/I-beam icon and doesn't put the cursor in the text when I click on it. I can't click to select text as I should be able to, and if I try to click and drag, all I do is end up creating another text frame. But in about the second half of the file, the selection and type tools work the way they should.
When I click and hold on the type tool, the cursor changes to the crosshairs icon for creating text frames and the "W: H: " dialogue box for text frames appears.
How can I get the tools to work properly in the entire document? Is anyone else having this problem?

@Cindy – usually all 3rd party developers will provide some information for installing and uninstalling their products. First see if you can find some information on their web sites.
Also there should be a dedicated Adobe Extension Manager app where you can look up the installed parts of InDesign. Since I do not have InDesign CC installed, I do not know exactly, but its name should be something like "Adobe Extension Manager CC".
If you start this app it will show all parts installed with InDesign (or other apps that are installed).
Usually at the bottom of the list are the 3rd party installed components. They do not state "Adobe Incoroprate System" as author. Never uninstall (remove) the Adobe ones!
Here a screen grab from my German Adobe Extension Manager CS5:
If you select one, a new option is available at the right. In my case here the "Entfernen" button ("Remove" in English).

  • Photoshop CS5.5 type tool not working after OS X 10.7.3 update

    Hi All
    Weird one ...
The first thing I noticed was that I could not use the type tool to create 'live' text on a layer. With the type tool selected I get the following error message when clicking to begin typing:
"Could not complete your request because of a programme error."
I quit Photoshop then attempted to launch the application by opening the file. The application opened but the file wouldn't, giving the same error message.
I quite Photoshop again and relaunched the application from the Dock. The applicatiuion opens fine but displays the same error message (before I have attempted to open a file).
With a file open I checked the type palette, where the dafault typeface is shown as Myriad Pro, but the default settings are:
    Type size: 1pt
    Linefeed (leading): 1pt
    Kerning: 1
    Tracking 1
    Type height: 0%
    Type width: 0%
    Baseline shift: 0
    Colour: black
    Language: multiple
    Type quality: none
Some odd settings there. The type tool bar (at the top of my display) has blank fields. Typing desired values into any of these fields doesn’t resolver the issue.
I have tried restarting, creating a new file but to no avail. The type tools in Illustrator and InDesign are working as expected, so it would appear to be a Photoshop problem and I’m stumped ... any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi All
Okay ... I have sorted this out. I deleted the preferences file:

tip for accessing the hidden user library (OS X 10.7):

Working normally now ... but I wonder what upset the tool ...

  • Chapter Title Text Frame Questions

I have a book with some side heads, and I made a master page with a simple grey background.  It works great when the chapter title is short:
(the grid pattern is a screen capture artifact--on my screen is a solid grey)
I put an empty paragraph in there to scroll down the next body paragraph, and while it's not an elegant solution, it does work.
However, some chapter titles are longer and push things down:
And that pushes down the body text.  So, I tried adding a chapter title text frame to the master page:
This works great visually, and also gives the chapter title more room since the upper text frame doesn't have side heads:
However, now the book files listing seems not to be recognizing the chapter title, and instead is just picking up body text from the document:
The first text frame has "autoconnect" turned off, and I named that "A" and the main body text frame "B".
Any suggestions as to how to get the book files listing to recognize the chapter title?
    Thanks!

    John,
I have not tried this, but you could try creating a master page for the first page in the chapter. Put two frames on the master page BOTH with the flow set to A. Position the first frame where you want the title to be and position the second frame where you want the text to begin. Set the paragraph tag for the title to have no space following. Set the paragraph tag for the FIRST paragraph of the text to Keep X rows together. With X set large enough, FrameMaker would not have room to put the first paragraph in the upper frame, so it will push it to the next frame. If this works, you can even go back to your original side head format for the title. You just have to make sure the top frame is large enough to hold all titles, so that a title does not leak to the second frame.

  • Why is my TYPE TOOL not working?

I have installed Photoshop Element 9.0.3.  When I use the TYPE TOOL, I only get dashes.  Updating the program did not help.  The mask mode in the TYPE TOOL works okay, but not the regular horizontal or vertical type tools.  Appreciate suggestions to resolve this.

    Try re-setting the tool:

  • Type tool not working

I downloade a trial version of Illustrator CC. If I open an old project, it looks like I can't use the Type tool, or some other tools. A locked pen symbol appears. If I start a new project, they work. Is that common with the trial version?

If you want to edit type made in an older version, do a Select All and then from the Type menu choose to Update Legacy Type. Be prepared for the possibility of some reflow.

  • Type tool not working Photosop CC.

I am trying to create a watermark using the type tool in Photoshop CC. When I click on my layer using the type tool it just places a teeny tiny black box with NO cursor. Thus, I can't type anything. I have tried resetting the tool and that changed nothing. Please help! It's driving me batty.

UPDATE: So I am now seeing that when I type and then click on the layer what I typed shows up as the layer name but there is still nothing on the box. How do I view it on the box?

  • Photoshop CS6 panels/tools not showing text descriptions.

While working on a project of mine yesterday the panels that display eraser and pen tool etc. stopped showing text. I can still see the hidden tools, but can no longer see text. I am quite familiar with most tools, but not all so it is a pain when I need to try that oddball tool I don't use regularly. I'm not sure what happened, but if anyone knows or had similar issues that can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ensure "Show Tool Tips" is enabled in Preferences > Interface.

  • Hyperion Planning:Text Data Type does not take text

    Hi,
I am working on a asset addition form, and we have a member set up in a dimension that captures details, which takes the Description of the Asset.
We set this up as a text data type, but when we try entering even a single character, it does not accept it.
Can anyone clarify if this is possible?
    THanks,
    ANindyo

    Hi John,
    Thanks for replying.
Can you also tell me whether there is a logic or suite I should follow in positioning the dimension marked with a test data type member, or setting its evaluation order?
    Thanks Again,

  • Eyedropper tool not copying text attributes

    Hello,
I am editing long documents for work. I have applied paragraph and character styles to all of my copy. I'd like to use the eyedropper tool to apply these said styles, but everytime I go to copy a text attribute the eyedropper appears "Full" as if it has copied the desired attributes. However, when I go to apply the attributes to other text, nothing happens. I am still in the trial version of the CS5 Suite on a PC running XP. Anybody out there know what's going on?
    thanks

    1. Highlight the text you want to change with the text tool.
    2. Select the eyedropper tool.
    3. Use the eyedropper to click on the format you want the text to be.
    Alternatively:
    1. Select the eyedropper tool.
    2. Click on the text with the format you want.
    3. Use the eyedropper to highlight the text you want changed.
I think you were expecting the first click of the eyedropper to select the text and the second to select the formatting. It's actually the opposite: First click selects the format, second click selects the text to be changed.

  • Photoshop Elements 6:   Could not use type tool because the file could not be found

Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 well for a while.
Tried to use the Type Tool to overlay text and obtained this error:
Could not use the type tool because the file could not be found
After research, I reset all tools, tried to repair (failed: insert disc one), and then removed/re-installed.  Still have the same problem.
Are the system fonts corrupt or is an Adobe .ini file suspect?
Other reports have suggested using a 3rd-party font manager to inspect/disable fonts.
First wanted to post this error here for feedback/recommendations
Any suggestion on how to recover the Type Tool functionality?

    Adobe Photoshop Elements Repair Workaround
When trying to repair the well-known:  insert disc one, error occurred.  Was able to successfully repair the installation by dragging the entire Adobe Photoshop Elements directory from the original CD-ROM onto a hard drive and executing locally.  Seems it does not like repairing over the CD-ROM but it works correctly if the install source is on disc...

    John,
Yesterday, I decided to completely remove all Adobe products:  PSE 6, Premiere 4, Reader, ActiveX plugins & legacy/old uninstalled product directories that Adobe has left turd-lets around including old Acrobat 3/6 directories.  Used A/D Software to remove all adobe products and then followed your instructions AND the instructions on Adobe's support web site to manually remove these products.
It boiled down to manually removing the entire Adobe directory in Progam Files, "saving" the entire Adobe directory structure in each users (3) Document and Settings in the Application Data and Local Settings (as instructed by you and Adobe) and rebooting.
I also saved the local All Users "configuration" database/cache that contained the Tag and other information to make sure the system was clean
This included following the manual Regit instructions to remove legacy Adobe registry hives.  I deleted all keys for all Adobe product trees that I could locate (following instructions from Adobe).
    Reboot
Scheduled a CHCKDSK on all drives and rebooted
Dragged my complete image library to an archive location and deleted them on the C: drive
    Did a complete system Defrag
Re-installed Adobe and alas still have the same problem with the Type Tool....
The only thing I did not do was selectively remove the "fonts" because various instructions seemed to indicate many are "required" by the windows or other applications and I was not really sure how to identify which ones were safe to remove w/o affecting the core system..  I'll have to re-read these instructions next.
Microsoft has a "Font Validator" tool, but that only checks 1 font at a time and you have to read the "results".  May look for other tools.
Will be able to check the font structure this weekend since it will take some research before I'm comfortable just removing fonts in trial/error mode.  I'll need to make a backup image of my computer before I start this (just in case).
    Thanks for follow-ups too!

  • What happened to the type tool in Photoshop CS5?

In previous versions of Photoshop, when the type tool hovered over text I could edit, it switched to just the up and down type cursor tool...and when it was over a region where I could click to create a new text layer, the cursor would show up with a little bounding box around it. Now in CS5, it is showing up as the simple up and down type tool whether I am hovered over text or not....so no way of knowing if a click is going to take me into an editable text layer, or if it is going to create a new type layer..until I actually click..
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any idea the cause, or the solution, or is it just a bug, or something that they changed for some reason?
    Thanks!

    Hello!
Did you try to reset the text tool? (hit T, then right-click the tool preset icon in the Option bar, and select reset tool)
Usually, to make sure that I can create a new text layer, even if there is already some text, one can hold down the shift key to force the creation of a new text layer.

  • Does anyone else feel that the Photoshop CS5 type tool hates them?

As a general rule I have no problems with PS CS5 and enjoy many of the features. Just struggled through the Classroom in a Book chapter on Typographic Design and find that getting the type tools and the text to behave is just a complete siege. it will not highlight properly, will not format all the selected text. Paragraph, Vertical and Horizontal all behave badly. God forbid you should right-align text and then highlight and the flashing cursor size bares no relation to the size of font to be typed; no crashes though. Complete nightmare. Am I alone? The only program I have found more anti-typography was (shudder) Corel 11 many moons back...a dark, dark time. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and am all up to date on patches. First time on the forum so apologies for any lapse in ettiquette. Any help appreciated.

What video card do you actually have?  It's possible even the latest drivers are buggy, especially if it's one that's no longer currently being supported or if it's very new.
Are you sure no fonts have been added to your system?  Just visiting web pages can add fonts.  If you'd like to double check the list you have, I have a freshly installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 test system on which I just did a listing of the fonts in the \Windows\Fonts folder:

  • Why does Elements 12 crash as soon as I open Type tool?  Get message "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred.  Photoshop Elements will now exit.  Using Mac

Why does Elements 12 crash as soon as I open Type tool?  Get message "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred.  Photoshop Elements will now exit."  Using Mac.  No imported fonts

Thank you, Barbara.  All fonts seemed fine, no empty or duplicates.  When I went back to Elements and tried again, it did not crash!  After months of not being able to use type tool,,, not sure why it worked, but it did.  Thanks again!  I appreciate the time you took to answer my question.

  • Get text frame's angle of rotation

Hello. Does anyone know if there's a way to get/return a text frame's angle of rotation? I've searched through the CS4 AppleScript documentation and the closest I found was a text frame's "matrix" property which seems to be used to rotate an object but not return an object's current angle of rotation. (There is a character rotation property but this seems to return the rotation of each character in the text frame, not the text frame as a whole.)
    Ben

I don't think you need to go to Ruby or satimage for this. Neat though it is to figure out the math of the matrix and implement this yourselves, Illustrator's scripting dictionary has the commands to make Illustrator translate an angle to a matrix value and vice versa:
    see
    concatenate rotation matrix
    and
    get rotation matrix
    in the language dictionary.
There are the equivalent commands for scale and translation matrices too.
In the Illustrator CS6 Applescript Dictionary, I'm looking at Page 99.
