Type tool quotation marks display like greater-than symbols

I'm having trouble with getting quotation marks to display correctly, they look like 2 stacked >> symbols. They change slightly depending on what font I'm using, but they all ride at the base of the text. I cannot acheive normal looking curly or staight quotes at all. I have tried switching smart quotes on and off in the preferences, restarting, etc. I've noticed this problem in the past, but I thought it was the font I was using. The same thing happens with Times New Roman. I'm running an up to date version of PSextended CS5, 64bit on win 7 64. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure if this is where you looked, but check the overall Windows settings as follows:
Click Start and type Language in the search box. When Region and Language comes up, click it.
Look through all the tabs to ensure everything's set as expected.
Outside of finding something unexpected in there, it's never a bad idea to try resetting the Character tool, or even the Photoshop overall preferences. To reset the Type Tool, select the T tool, then right-click in the T tool icon in the options area:

How can I type curved quotation marks on iPad2?

I have recently started using Pages for both my Mac and iPad2 so I can continue typing on documents through iCloud. However, on my iPad, whenever I type quotation marks, rather than curved quotation marks, it is only allowing me to type straight quotation marks. How can I type curved ones? example:
On Mac: “I like apples.”
On iPad: "I like apples."

EIther tap and swipe up or tap and hold the " key. This will bring up a menu of additional characters including the two curved marks. While your finger is still touching the screen, slide over to the character you want and then release.
BTW, Further characters can be found by using this trick with other keys. For instance you can type a percentage symbol from the 0 (zero) key.

Quotation Marks display as boxes

I need to figure out why in some instance quotation marks
display as boxes.
This may also be a ColdFusion question but I'll start here:
I have a site that displays articles from a coldfusion
database. The articles display fine. There is no css or font tag
applied to the text (so basically displaying default fonts).
Now, I gave the page a new name and surrounded the code with
formatting css. All quotation marks display as square box. I
thought it may depend on the font that I chose (Ariel). So I
removed the css style sheet for a moment but the quotation marks
still show as box. Since I have the same code to pull the data,
same browser, same computer, this is puzzling.
Any idea what is causing this?

Are the quotes 'straight' quotes, or 'curly' quotes? Although
both straight
and curly quotes are special characters (" and
“ respectively) a
' " ' (i.e. straight quote) will usually appear as a straight
quote when put
directly in the code, but I have never had curly quotes
appear correctly. I
guess this is because quotes are used within attributes and
so on in regular
HTML.
If this isn't your problem then someone else will answer
better than I
have...

On a mac the type tool will not display when i double click on the type button in the layers panel

Thank you for your response. I am using PSE version 11, OS 10.9.4.
I figured out the issue. The Text Tool was displayed but it was off the bottom of the screen. I had to resize the window from the bottom to display the Text Tool. To do so I had to move the dock to the left and then learn that by using the Option key it is possible to change window size on both edges.

Are you trying to add text? Did you check the Style tab and what font is set there? some fonts don't have certain characters.

In the Calculate event of the Total field, write the following with Java Script as language.

Quotation marks display as &quot in web pages, I'm using Unicode UTF-8 character encoding.

On many web pages, where a quotation mark character should appear, instead the page displays the text &quot. I believe this happens with other punctuation characters as well such as apostrophes although the text displayed in these other cases is different, of course. I'm guessing this is a problem with character encoding. I'm currently set to Unicode (UTF-8) encoding. Have tried several others without success.

BTW, I never use IE, but I checked this site in IE and it shows the same problem, so maybe it is the page encoding after all rather than what I thought.

Photoshop CS3 & Mac Leapard Problem.. Type Tool question mark

I am having a problem that I cannot figure out. I just bought this software and was able to use it a couple of times before it started doing this.
The problem is when I use the Type Tool and choose a color it will show a question mark (?). When I type you cannot see anything. Its like it can use any color.
The Masked Type Tool works fine, but whenever I use the regular type tool I cannot change the color or even see what i'm typing!

On my old iMac G5, with Leopard and CS3, sometimes the color picker would freeze my whole machine.
When I bumped the RAM up to 2Gb, that went away.
Unfortunately, the G5 processor cooked about two weeks later, but PS ran fine for those two weeks.

ROWNUM with Greater than symbol..!

Can any one explain why ">" greater than operator not working with ROWNUM.
FOR EXAMPLE:
SELECT * FROM EMP where rownum > 2;
But the less than operator is working.
SELECT * FROM EMP where rownum < 2;
Please clarify this.

This value, starting with 1, is being attached to every record which satisfy the where clause condition. Hence, for the first record to be assigned a rownum, the where clause must consider rownum=1 as a valid condition.
" Rownum needs to be "generated" in a subquery first "I don't see any problem with the following code (with no subquery):
select * from emp
where rownum <=3;This query will display the first 3 fetched (not sorted) records from the emp table.

GREATER THAN symbol appearing as &gt ; in SQL*Plus

Version:11.2.0.3
OS : RHEL 5.4
We are a Software vedor firm.We have sent our SQL files to our client to execute. But the codes for various procedures and functions were failing
because, in their SQL*Plus session (in Putty) the LESS THAN character < was appearing as &lt ; and GREATER THAN character > was appearing as &gt ;
In the original code which we had sent to them has no problems with > or < characters.

I checked with my client. They have put our scripts in Collabnet SVN version control and the implementor DBA will be provided the http URL .
Apparently SVN is accessed using http protocol and yes you are right it is opened through a browser by typing an URL like below
http://10.80.16.214:79839/svn/brcf/DBfiles/2012/WMHReleasel8/hrtb_pkt_wave.sqlFor most of the end users , the GREATER THAN character appears as > without any issues . For some users it appears as &gt ; . One potential cause is the difference in Internet Explorer version. They are currently looking into this.

How did you manage to get &gt_; (without the underscore) printed ? When I tried it the forums editor was converting it to > . This is why I placed a space/underscore between t and semi colon. Is there some escape character ?

Quotation marks look like " " in one InDesign document

At my job I am updating an old InDesign file in CS5 with new content. Whenever I press the " or ' I get >> or > (not exactly, but it's a symbol that looks very similar to >> or >). I have never had this problem and can't understand why it is doing this. There is nothing else in the document that makes the wrong symbol when the key is pressed.
I am using a Mac and none of that stereotypical IT advice helps (reset the computer, open and close the program, etc.)
I also already went into preferences & selected typographer's quotes, then changed the quote settings in Preferences > Dictionary to be the correct typographer's quotes, but it makes no difference. I feel like this should have been the solution to the problem.
Any ideas? I'm getting tired of making the proper quote mark in another document and copy-pasting it whenever I want to use one (the only thing that works).

Never mind, I googled it based on M Blackburn's response and found the solution myself. I will now explain the solution in case anyone else who was wondering stumbles across this.
The correct solution is:
1. Select the text and go to the Character panel.
2. In the Character panel at the bottom there is a drop down that is marked Language. If you have selected the text and the current selection of the dropdown is blank, it means there are multiple languages being used (in my case, somewhere in the document the original author of the document accidentally used French, I guess).
3. Change the drop down to "English: USA".
I had already changed the language and both the quote options in the Preferences > Dictionary section, and this didn't change anything. The French apparently overrides it.
M Blackburn was right about it being French, but Bob Levine of course that's the solution... I wanted to know how to do it, and Jeffrey_Smith I said earlier that I already tried that. Please double-check your answers to make sure they are worthwhile!

greater than symbol inserted at bottom of php pages in all pages

I've coded for years and never seen this. At the bottom of all of my pages, no matter what I do, the following gets added in
"<html>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>" obviously these symbols show up and make all my webpages look awful. I delete, save, and upload, and in less than ten minutes, they are there and on my website too. What is happening?????

Does this appear when you preview your local copy, (you do have a local copy, and are not working directly with your servers copy)?
If your local copy is O/K, then it may be that your server has been infected with a virus, and this is inserting the code. A virus that added code similar to that you are describing, has been floating around the web for years now.
If your local copy has the problem then check your computer for viruses.

"Greater than" symbol ( ) not working in Leopard

I can't input the > symbol on my keyboard. I have a Core 2 Duo MacBook with Leopard. This symbol should come by shift+< but it's not. I reseted all the operating system keyboard shortcuts but no luck. Any suggestions?

If a third party application has mapped its own keyboard shortcuts, I do not know of any universal way to reset those.
What you might consider doing is loading up Activity Monitor and killing off any other applications running aside from the normal operating system components and see if you can use the shortcut keys normally at that point.

User input formula variable with greater than/less than operators for KFG

Hello all,
I have used a formula in my query that is a difference of two key figures .For e.g:
Difference = tax from system A - tax from system B.
Now when the users run the report they should be prompted for the 'Difference' threshold for seeing the report say where difference is greater 100 or equal to 10 and so on.Currrently I have created a formula variable with 'user input' and created a 'condition' to display 'Difference' greater than the user entered value.
However,it is required to have various selection options for setting the threshold of difference.For e.g User should be able to set say 'equal to'/'greater than/less than/not equal to operator for 'difference' in the initial selection screen of the report.
With the current user-input formula variable I am not getting these 'greater than' etc operators.Any ideas on how to achieve this?

Ya know, that's all well and good ... BUT ... WHAT IF you do want to sort text type columns with Greater Than and Less Than operatiors??
SQL does it just Fine ... so WHY does APEX have the limit??? This is an Oracle BUG ... it SHOULD NOT limit the operators ... I realize "they" may be trying to be helpful with proper constraints to field searches ... but ... if SQL can do it, then ... no need for a limit.
EG ...
Show the records where
the "Begin_Year-Wk" data is less than or equal to "2009-09" AND
the "End_Year-Wk" data is greater than or equal to "2009-04"
... to give everything that was running in that 5 week period whether or not it starts within that time frame
I can run this query perfectly fine via SQL ... but not in APEX ... unless I reconvert a lot of strings back to numbers, and for sorting / formatting / explain-to-user purposes, I really don't want them to be numbers.
So ... there's gotta be a hidden tweak for operators somewhere ...
