Typekit and Font Management : Still a bit confused

I am still a little confused as to how the new Creative Cloud TypeKit works and how it will or will not effect our workflow.
We currently use Extensis Universal Type Server (UTS). We have a team membership license for Creative Cloud. Does TypeKit interject itself before fonts are loaded from UTS?
If fonts are downloaded to the desktop from TypeKit do I need to copy these into UTS? Should my users mix and match fonts acquired with UTS and TypeKit or maintain the status with UTS? Can you disable TypeKit if this is the case? How can we resolve conflicts with fonts if UTS and TypeKit are running?
Do we need to purchase fonts now that with TypeKit the claim is all fonts from Adobe are free with CC membership? How does this interact with UTS?
Does Adobe still sell fonts if TypeKit being part of the CC subscription implies the complete catalog is free?
How are font licensing issues handled with TypeKit? In the past, font licensing was a big concern in publishing and still very confusing as to use and purchasing.
I have been trying to get a firm understanding of the use and rights of fonts throughout my career and with TypeKit it puts many of my past understandings into perplexity.
Thank you for any answers towards my questions.

I received an email response from and Adobe Rep:
Let me see if I can clear things up here:
> 1. We currently use Extensis Universal Type Server (UTS). We have a team membership license for Creative Cloud. Does TypeKit interject itself before fonts are loaded from UTS?
A: Unfortunately, I don't have the details here. However, Extensis announced that Typekit can work along side UTS: http://blog.extensis.com/font-management/universal-type-server-now-supports-use-typekit-de sktop-fonts.php
Typekit doesn't install the fonts the same way you would install a perpetual license. I hope that article helps clarify specific questions.
> 2. If fonts are downloaded to the desktop from TypeKit do I need to copy these into UTS? Should my users mix and match fonts acquired with UTS andTypeKit or maintain the status with UTS? Can you disable TypeKit if this is the case? How can we resolve conflicts with fonts if UTS and TypeKit are running?
A: UTS and Typekit should be able to work at the same time. However, you won't be able to add Typekit fonts to UTS. Each CC Team user would need to sync the fonts from Typekit that they wish to use.
> 3. Do we need to purchase fonts now that with TypeKit the claim is all fonts from Adobe are free with CC membership? How does this interact with UTS?
A: If the font you need is in Typekit and you have a Portfolio Plan (through Creative Cloud Teams or otherwise) you get access to that font. So, you can sync it from Typekit and use it in desktop apps. If a font isn't available on Typekit, you would need to purchase a perpetual license for the team and add it to UTS like you have with other fonts.
> 4. Does Adobe still sell fonts if TypeKit being part of the CC subscription implies the complete catalog is free?
A: Currently, you can still purchase perpetual licenses to Adobe owned fonts as well as some other fonts that they resell. However, the Adobe owned fonts and many other commercial fonts are available with a Typekit subscription. Access to Typekit isn't really free. You're paying for it when you pay for Creative Cloud. It's just that Typekit doesn't cost you anything extra since it's included.
> 5. How are font licensing issues handled with TypeKit? In the past, font licensing was a big concern in publishing and still very confusing as to use and purchasing.
A: This article is a good place to start: http://help.typekit.com/customer/portal/articles/1341590-typekit-font-licensing
If you have specific questions about licensing or use cases, feel free to ask.I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Hi Phillip,
According to your description, the error occurred on the custom page layout.
For a page layout to work with a given master page, the two must have the same set of content placeholders. If you create a page layout based on a particular master page, and then edit that HTML master page, you'll see this message. Even if you know that
changes to the master page didn't add or remove content placeholders, you should update the content regions of your page layout anyway, so that you can preview any changes from the master page that might affect your page layout.

  • User Experience with CS/CS2 fonts and font management

Im just ordered a 2.0MBP and am wondering about other user's experience with the MBP and CS or CS2 running in Rosetta as well as font management. I know there are lots of post about Adobe and Rosetta, but no cohesive forums describing what most user's experiences have been- both good and bad.
I plan on running CS (all apps except Version Cue) as i will wait for CS3 and skip over CS2. For fonts im currently running FontExplorer X and plan on continuing.
Id love to hear what Adobe software is working well (or not), what font management you are using and what system.
    15inch G4Ti-Book, G5 Quad, MBP 2.0 (ordered)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

So im curious, out of these applications i have installed will any of them install anything into the MacHD>Users>Applenewton>Library>Fonts Folder?
    I have installed:
    Adobe CS2
    Macromedia Studio 8
    Microsoft Office 2004
iknow those apps have their own fonts they use to work with their programs
i just want to know what would be safe to move around or remove period from my user font library.
i dont mean to sound redundant but i spaced out/forgot how i originally organized my fonts i know i added certain fonts to my font folder in my user's library font folder but cant recall if i added arial/verdana and some other fonts.
is there to check what apps depend on them or what?
    thanks in advanced!

  • Typekit for font management?

I am trying to figure out whether Typekit will allow me to manage my legacy font collection of TTF, PFM, and OTF fonts. I am only interested in using fonts in CC software, I have no need for Typekit's web font features.

No because that is not the point of TypeKit. You will have to look elsewhere.

  • Upgraded to Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.1 and prior versions still present cause confusion.

After buying Adobe Acrobat X Pro, installing it, I see Adobe Acrobat 8 Provessional and Adobe Acrobat Pro still are listed as "applications".  Should these be removed?  If so, does using the Acrobat Uninstaller.app allow me to specifically delete each without destroying my Adobe Acrobat X Pro version? I use Mac OS X Version 10.6.8.  I would like to avoid reinstalling Acrobat X Pro, but for no particular reason except that things are working so well at the moment. This is what is listed on my computer now.

    Hi,
Before removing Acrobat 8 please check the version of AdobePDFViewer plug-in.
Go to (Drive where OS is installed)\Library\Internet Plug-Ins\ and click on AdobePDFViewer.plugin to check its version. Now follow the instructions below
    a) If the version of plugin starts with 10 then
         - Launch Acrobat 8 Professional
         - Go to Help-> Activation->Deactivae
         - Then quit Acrobat 8
          - Trash the "Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional" folder
    b) If the version of plugin starts with 8 then
          - Go to Acrobat 8 Professional folder
          - Launch the Acrobat Uninstaller app
          - in the browse dialog for uninstall select Adobe Acrobat Professional present in "Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional" folder
          - Reinstall Acrobat X Pro

  • Difference between FCS2 and FC Express 4? bit confused...

I was originally looking to buy FCS2 for HDV work, then thought about Final Cut Express 4, however i'm a little confused over what the cheaper alternative lacks. I know Express can't work with more professional formats, but that's about all i know. I'll be wanting to do allot of soundtrack work, foley work, etc. Is express a trial version such as logic express? which if i remember rightly, you lose allot of features after 30 days. If someone could list a few of the major differences that would be great
    Cheers
    Phil

    http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/
Works with HDV and AVCHD when converted to AIC.
There is no trial version or downloadable version.
It used to be bundled with Soundtrack, but no longer is, and the price dropped $100.
    Does contain LiveType as well.
I don't believe you can batch capture with FCE, but other than limitations about pro codecs, it works about the same.
If you are working with HDV, it may be the ticket.

  • Font Management Guidance

Just installed CS4 for Windows. Currently using Extensis Suitcase for Windows (v11x). I don't believe that the "auto activation" feature works with CS4. What type of font management program that incorporates that type of feature would you folks recommend?
    Thanks in advance...
    ~Vince

I would recommend you stay clear of any auto-activation in Windows. We see a lot of reported porblems here that are solved by turning it off. I've been running without a font manager (still looking for one I like) since upgrading to XP when CCS3 was released, and I don't miss it that much anymore.

  • Save Options a Bit Confusing

    Hi,
I've been using LabVIEW for about 7 months now, and am still a bit confused about the save options.  It seems that whenever I modify a sub-VI for my app, the previous sub-VI I created ends up with the same settings that I changed in the newly modified one.
Example:  I use an existing VI created by Daytronic Corp for monitoring a binary signal.  I change the channel and a few other settings, and name the file oil press.vi, saving it in the new folder I created for my app.  Then I close the oil press.vi I modified, then close the original, unchanged VI without saving it.  When I create another VI starting with the original, unmodified one again, and save it using the same procedure, but using a different filename (let's call it fuel press.vi), oil press.vi takes on the characteristics of fuel press.vi, although the filename is still oil press.vi.  So, I end up having to use the "replace" option on the block diagram and select oil press.vi as the replacement file.  I have to keep doing this for every sub-vi I create.
This take a lot of time and is a bit annoying.
I hope you can understand what I'm saying.  The Save options seem confusing to me, with all the references to keeping a vi in memory, closing the original, etc.  Is there some text or a tutorial online that explains the save options in a simpler, more direct form?  I have even read about it in my book (Labview for Everyone) and it doesn't go into much more detail about how saving the Vis actually works.
    Thanks!

    Hi Mike,
Actually, I'm using LV 8.5.  It's the descriptions of the save options that are slightly confusing.  The information about what's left in memory and what's closed and opened is what's got me baffled.
For example, what, in layman's terms, do each of these options below mean... exactly?  I would think that an option that simply says "Save as path/filename" would be enough.  Then, the renamed, saved file stays open, since that's the one that's currently being used, and the original is closed and left as it was.  Which option (and sub-option) would I choose to do this?
The number of options below seems a bit excessive, and not very clearly defined, at least to me.   Even the explanation in the book "LabVIEW for Everyone", which is supposed to be for beginners, doesn't do a very good job of describing exactly what each option does.  Thanks again!
Original file—Displays the path to the open file. You can
use this field to determine the location of a file on disk.
Copy—Creates and saves a copy of the file in memory to disk with a name you
choose. If you enter a new file path or name for the file, the original file on
disk is not overwritten or deleted.
Substitute copy for original—Both the original file and the
new file exist on disk, but the original VI closes and the new VI opens. Use
    this option if you
want to create a copy of the original file and immediately edit the copy.
Caution  If the original file has
calling VIs in memory, this option updates all these callers to refer to the new
    file.
If the original file is in a project
library or project, this option substitutes the new file for the original in the
    project library or project.
Create unopened disk copy—Both the original file and the
new file exist on disk, but only the original file remains open in memory. Use
    this option if you
want to create a copy of the original file but continue editing the original
file, for example, if you want to create a backup copy. This option does not update
callers in memory to refer to the new file. You can update callers manually by
    finding all instances of a
VI and updating the name of each instance. If the original file is in a
library or project, this option does not add the new file to the same library or
    project.
Open additional copy—Both the original file and the new
file exist on disk and are open in memory. You must give the copy a new name,
because two files of the same name cannot exist in the same application instance
at the same time. Use this option if you want to create a copy of the original file,
continue editing the original file, and also immediately edit the new file. This
    option does not
update callers in memory to refer to the new file. You can update callers
    manually by finding all
instances of a VI and updating the name of each instance. If the original
file is in a library or project, you have the option of adding the new
file to the same library or project by placing checkmarks in the appropriate
checkboxes. If you place a checkmark in the checkbox to add the copy to the
library, the checkbox to add the copy to the project is disabled and
    unchecked.
Rename—Renames the file in memory with a new name you
    choose. This option
closes and deletes the original file and opens the file with the new name, so
only the new file exists on disk and in memory. Use this option if you want to
change the name and/or location of the original file.
Caution  If the original file has
calling VIs in memory, this option updates all these callers to refer to the new
    file.
If the original file is in a library or
project, this option adds the new file to the same library or project,
    and removes the original file.
Duplicate hierarchy to new location— Use this option if you want to
    save the original
VI and its hierarchy to a new location. You might want to rename the new VI
    hierarchy after duplicating it.

  • Redirecting / Suppressing [font manager] [link manager] errors

I have several hundred indd templates that get used by the system I am working on. The template all have linked images in them, some of which get replaced on the fly with variable images. The problem is that when I am debugging the output from the InDesign instance I see lots of errors comming from the link manager and font manager that look like this
Wed Apr 2 15:34:04 2008 ERROR [link manager] Link missing.; MainG5:Users:User1:Desktop:Links:LOGO-2007.tif
Wed Apr 2 15:34:04 2008 WARN [font manager] Missing Font Avenir 35 Light
I want to be able to turn this on and off, but thus far have not found a way to suppress these messages. The only thing I thought I could do is write a program to tail the end of the file and exclude output that have a match for [font manager] or [link manager] but that's not what I want to do.

    Hey Kevin,
Have you tried to update the application to the latest version?? That would be my first suggestion try updating the application,.
Secondly if it still does not help first try the steps under http://helpx-internal.corp.adobe.com/content/help/en/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-unexp ected-behavior-user-account-1.html

Dock magnification (on 2d dock, very smooth)
3d dock magnification and genie effects still a bit sluggish... but cheer for Apple's development team. Hope next update will completely fix the 3d dock issue.

  • PC Font Management, CS4 and Windows 7

    I have a new PC.
Starting from scratch I had Windows Vista 64 installed as this was just before the Microsnot launch of Windows 7. I bought CS4 Design Premium and had this pre-loaded. I downloaded Extensis Font Fusion 2 and loaded that. After loading this I had issues with Illustrator crashing and also Indesign and Flash. Also Photoshop 64 pretty much wouldn't work at all. I removed Font Fusion2 and found the Adobe products were less flakey but still not solid. I then upgraded Windows to V7 64bit. This also improved matters though PS64 still wasn't 100% stable.I called extensis and they said that they had released a version that answered this issue, but since loading the latest version of Suitcase Fusion 2 Illustrator has become very much less stable and also PS64 is now unusable, which is a bit of a shag as I have paid to have 12 gB of ram in this machine which is only used by the 64bit apps.
I have called Adobe technical who were pretty unhelpful.
Has anyone found a good type manager for under £100 that actually works with Adobe CS4?

If you're working on a stand-alone machine, why not trying to work without font management?
I worked with suitcase 11,  and all went fine. (running on xp64).
Since we're in a network, we opted for universal type server and client, both working well. I'm sure that on the web the're several free managers can be found

  • About Typekit, Edge Fonts and Google Fonts real utility for Web Designers

    Hello,
Perhaps it´s a simple situation for the majority of CC User but I´m a little bit confused about that. I have a TypeKit plan included in my Creative Cloud subscription. I have then the possibility of use Web Fonts included in Typeset (which is awesome, by the way). My problem comes when I try to use a TypeKit font for a client who does´t want to pay for a TypeKit plan and I can´t use the same font in the trial plan which is a great way of convince the client he needs TypeKit for a better typography access.
    So, my questions are:
There is available TypeKit fonts in Adobe Edge fonts too?
The only fonts available in Edge Fonts are Google Fonts?
How can I know if a specific TypeKit font is available in TypeKit Trial Plan too without searching the entire catalog filtered by Trial Library or in Adobe Edge?
Do you recommend to me a workflow in which I can use TypeKit fonts for clients avoiding the need to pay the client for that font? (it´s hard to convince him, not to use free alternatives like Google Fonts or Adobe Edge Fonts)
    Thanks in advance.

I haven’t tried it so this may be a shot in the dark but you might be able to hack into the CSS and use @font-face to call a local font.
Check the license of the font to be sure it allows this.

  • Vista 64 bit and CS4 and color management

This is a question about Vista 64 bit and CS4 and color management. I scan 4x5 film and sometimes end up with up to or even bigger than 1 GB files. Obviously that needs as much memory as possible. Windows XP is limited in this regard and I am in the market for a new speedy computer which won't force me to stay at a snail's pace. In this month's Shutterbug, David Brooks in his Q&A column says to avoid Vista for color management reasons, but offers no explanation or support for his opinion. He implies one should wait for Windows 7 for some unstated reason. With a calibrated monitor and printer and Photoshop controlling color files sent to the printer, why would Vista be any different or worse than XP? Is he on to something or just pontificating? Does anyone know any reliable info about Windows 7 that would make it worth waiting for?
    Thanks.

    Zeno Bokor wrote:
Photoshop has direct access to max 3.2gb
On Mac OS X, PS CS4 can use up to 8 GB of RAM, but only directly accesses up to 3.5 GB. (Figures quoted from kb404440.) In using PS CS4 on Mac OS, though, direct Memory Usage maxes out at 3 GB even. If you set usage to 100% (3 GB), then plug-ins (including Camera Raw and filters), as well as actions and scripts, can access RAM above that 3 GB to between about 512 MB and about 768 MB total (seems to vary depending on which filters et al that you are using), leaving the rest up to 4 GB for the Mac OS. If you have more than 4 GB, then the amount of RAM above 4 GB is used by PS as a scratch disk. This increases performance significantly for most things because writing to and reading from the hard drive is much slower than doing so with RAM.
I haven't done the testing for actual RAM usage and such for PS CS4 on Vista 64, and Adobe's documentation is very much lacking in detail, but, based on the statement "If you use files large enough to need more than 4 GB of RAM, and you have enough RAM, all the processing you perform on your large images can be done in RAM, instead of swapping out to the hard disk." from kb404439, it seems that PS would be using RAM in very much the same way as I described above for Mac OS, except that the scratch disk usage in RAM wouldn't be limited to 8 GB (instead to how much you have installed). Has anyone done any performance/load testing to know for sure? I didn't see any such studies published, but I am curious if one has been done.
I will agree that there is a definite performance advantage when using PS CS4 (64-bit) on Vista 64, which I've experienced, especially when working very large compositions.
My initial recommendation to the OP to use Mac was based upon reading those articles about bad color management. As I stated before, I have never experienced that problem, and clearly the views of all that have posted here so far indicate that the problem may not be a real issue. (Perhaps this David Brooks fellow and Steve Upton both like to mess with their computers and broke something in Windows?)
