Types of DVDs

What is better quality, Dual layer or double sided? I need to burn some movies that are too big for normals. And can you get both of these in re-writable? What's more common?
Another question, what is the difference between re-writable, re-inscriptable and i think there's another one?
Thanks

1. no difference in "quality"; they are functionally different in that a double-sided disk is effectively 2 separate single-layer disks and you need to manually flip it to access the other side; the dual-layer disk merely has 2x the capacity of single layer, but at the cost that some older equipment might not like dual-layer recordable media (then again, those same players often have issues with any recordable media).
2. Of course. DVD players don't flip themselves. Further, you need to create an entirely separate disk image for both sides (two different iDVD projects).
3. "-R" and "+R" standards differ mostly in the specification of tolerances for the laser and properties of dyes in the disks. "-R" is intended to most closely mimic the properties of commercially produced DVDs, whereas "+R" is focused on making the disk reading and writing as fault-tolerant as possible.
4. "-R" may be better than "-R" in that you can't overwrite it, and it's more likely to be readable in older players. "-R" has the benefit that you can overwrite it several times (and not waste disks).
5. The recommendation depends on what you want to accomplish. Use the best format for the job. For general purposes, I tend to use DVD+R if the target is a contemporary set-top DVD player or a computer, though I often use DVD-RW or DVD+RW to prototype disks (because, if I don't like them, I simply write over them). My church has a DVD player that's very old (ca 1998) player that won't play most recordable DVDs, but can be coaxed to play DVD-R disks made by a particular vendor. So, if I make DVD for them, I use that.

  • What type of DVD should I use for Windows Backup?

I am wanting to do my Windows Backup and I was wondering what type of DVD media I should use. Is it better to use a RW or only R type DVD.
    I have an HP Omni 220-1180qd, A5W89AV#ABA, running Win7 64 bit.
I thought I read it can use CD's, DVD's but I want to know which would be the better choice.
Thanks for any help and all help is appreciated.

Honestly, an external hard drive would be a better choice. The difference between +R and +R/W is that +R is "Recordable" and +R/W is "Re-Writable". If you intend on making periodic backups, go with an extrernal hard drive... If you intend on making very few backups, consider the DVD+R discs.

  • What type of DVD burns on a Mac  r or -r?

Need to know what type of DVD to purchase to burn a movie.  DVD+R or DVD-R for a Mac.

Depends on what machine you intend to use it on.
Most Mac's should be able to do both DVD-R and DVD+R formats it's the other device you got to worry about.
The important thing is get the small batch of DVD's first and try a few burns and test them on the other machine.
Then you can buy the big stack.
Some makes of DVD's are better (or worse) than others. Also there seems to be a heat or time issue with then as well, so don't pick up the stack with a lot of dust on it.
Leave the DVD's in the case only extract one as you use it and never return one to the case, don't touch the bottom ever or lay the bottom on something hard.
finicky things those DVDs, got to try a few to get a burn sometimes.

  • HT1103 Is there a particular type of DVD for this?  My slideshow also has music so I want that to play as well.

Is there a particular type of DVD that I need to buy to burn a slideshow with music from IPhoto?

Do you want the disk to play in a DVD player on a TV set?  If so you will have to use iDVD to create and burn the disk.  Export the slideshow to the Movie folder at the large size.
Next open iDVD, create a project and select a theme.  Then drag the slideshow movie file into the menu's window being careful to avoid any dropzones.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Note:  if you don't have iDVD on your MBP then you'll have to purchase the iLife 11 disc from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: iLife 11. That's because Apple doesn't offer it any more.

  • Whta type of DVD do I use/

Here's an easy one. Do I burn with DVD+RW or do I use another type?

DVD-RW has a lower than normal reflectivity than most media. I recommend you use Verbatim Dvd-R instead while troubleshooting on this forum.

  • What type of DVD?

What type of DVD (DVD+R,DVD+RW,DVD-R,DVD-RW) should I use to burn videos from my video camera that are now on iMovie?

You can go to the apple menu, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware and then the DVD drive you have to find out if there are specifications given on the drive only supporting certain types of DVDs.  Otherwise it should support any of the formats.

  • Can iMac read this type of DVD?

    Matshita DVD-R
I have heard some type of writable DVD's do not work with Macs. Does this one?
    Thanks A lot!

    Hi there,
That DVD-R should work in your Mac.
The best way to check which media types are supported is to go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info > toggle Hardware and highlight Disc Burning... you should see a list of supported media for your Mac...
With that said, some brands do work better than others and some brands just don't work. The major brands all seem to work well, Verbatim DVD-R is my choice and it has not failed me yet.
    Good luck, Rick

  • Buying correct type of DVD for copying VHS tapes:

Will my MacBookPro -- late 08, (model 5.1) burn DVDRW (rewrite) or do I have to stick with the one-shot DVD? I prefer the RW but store clerk said if I open package I can't return and exhange for the one-shot type. Help.

DVD-RW media is useful for certain applications (read: short-term data storage), but I would not recommend them for video purposes. They are not as stable over time and will not have the life that good quality DVD-R media have. They also cost more than DVD-R media and there is also some question of how well (or not) they will play in ordinary DVD players.
May I suggest +Verbatim DataLife Plus DVD-R+ or DVD+R media. They are reasonably priced, are available in silver or white inkjet-printable versions; single-layer and dual-layer. I have been using them for years and not one has failed to burn or play.

  • What type of dvd drive enclosure do I need?

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro PRE unibody that I put a solid state drive in the standard HD and moved the standard HD to the dvd drive slot.   Now its time to buy a DVD drive enclosure but I cant seem to find one/figure out exactly what to buy.
I understand I need a PATA style DVD enclosure.   As thats what I bought for a caddy for my HD to put in that slot.    But all the enclosures I see that are PATA say they're for Powerbooks and older Macs.
Does anyone have a link to an external DVD drive enclosure I can order?
    Thank you.

Thanks,  but I don't see any enclosures.  I see total dvd drives.  I have my Superdrive that still works and just need an enclosure for it.   Theres a ton of them on Amazon, just don't know which version.
Thanks for the reply.  Good to know that worst case I can buy an all inclusive setup for 60 bucks.

  • I would like to put all my iPhone videos to my macbook air than put it on a dvd to watch on any dvd player how would i do that using my usb superdrive and what type of dvd would i need

I have just transferred all my iphone videos into my macbook, now I would like to put these videos onto a dvd for playing on any dvd; how would I do that with my usb Superdrive dvd/cd drive. I don't see a option to burn. Please help and responses is greatly appreciated, I am a New macbook user.

You need an app like Toast by Roxio (http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/default.html).  You would use Toast to burn the videos to a DVD-R disc.

  • My dvd/rw is suddenly stop reading all types of dvds plzz help

i am owning hp DVD RW 7711H' it reads all formats of CDs but detect the DVDs as RAW.
my OS is WIN7. please help me.

did the drive used to work, or have you never used it previously? The only things that spring to mind for me (in no particular order of likelihood) are:
    1. the drive was always defective and you've only just noticed
    2. some foreign object in in the drive (depends on your environment - could be anything from polystyrene from the packaging to the remnants of a jam sandwich)
    3. You're putting the disk in back to front (just checking the obvious!)
    4. There's already a disk in there and the funny noise is the drive reading the disk. You need to eject that disk first!
