Typewriter Tool in Reader 9 no longer allows text styling

In Acrobat 8, I use to be able to right-click with the typewriter tool and choose bold or italic in using "Type Styles." This feature is gone in Acrobat 9. Did Adobe remove it? If so why?
Rob

Hi Rob.
Take a look at this thread:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415470
There are around 40 posts over a year, from others who are finding this problem very irritating.  I expect there are other threads too.
It seems that many other people have the same problem, that the problem is inconsistent (some suggested workarounds work for some people, but not for others), that it has been present in more than one version of Acrobat, and that it remains basically unresolved.
My own experience is that although Acrobat 4 worked better for me than any subsequent version I have (6 and 9), Windows 7 and Acrobat 4 or 6 seem incompatible.  I now have this same problem with Acrobat 9.
I would welcome any solution that works for all these users, over their several versions of Acrobat, if it is offered by Adobe.  If there is such a solution, and if they are monitoring this thread (let's see if this is published in its entirety), perhaps they would post it to the thread, or update the offline/online help topic at:
Adobe/Help/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/help.html?content=WS76F8368A-2F01-421d-9437-06EEB1C68BA4.html
(This is the Help topic on using the Typewriter tool).
If Adobe cannot or will not solve problems like this, we had better vote  with our spending power.
If there is no solution from Adobe  itself, it seems that in this respect Acrobat is a faulty product.
How about it, Adobe, is this fair comment?  Can you solve this problem?

  • Typewriter Tool Erratic - not precise in placement of Text

Our department has a form that is partially completed from a database program, printed to PDF, and the remainder is filled out using the typewriter tool. After the form is filled, we use the flattenpages.js tool to embed the added text into the form. While I agree this isn't the most efficient way, it is what we have to work with.
Anyway, this works well on all computer except one...... On this computer, using the Typewriter tool produces erratic behavior and you can't position the cursor over the box to type an X. It will go above, below, side, etc. but not in the box. I can take the same generated form on my computer and it works fine.
My question: Is there a setting within Adobe or in the registry that would control how the tool responds? Any help would be appreciated.

Problem solved. Believe it or not it was Windows profile related. Logging in as a different user on the same computer - it works fine. Recreated the users profile and it is working as programmed. Who would have figured !!!!!!!!!

  • Why does reading list no longer allow offline reading?

For as long as I've had my iPhone 4S I've used Safari's Reading List to save pages from the browser to read later (so that I don't eat up the data on my plan). It's worked just fine for months, but now, in the last couple weeks, everything I have saved on my Reading List says that it is "Not Available for Offline Reading". Is anyone else having this issue?

    Hello Tseecka,
It sounds like you are not able to use the Offline Reading List feature on your iPhone 4S.  According to iOS 6: Which software features does my iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch support? (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5457), your iPhone 4S does support the offline reading list feature.
I found an article that has steps to troubleshoot issues with the Reading List.  I recommend following the steps under the section titled "Troubleshooting Bookmarks and Reading List update or setup issues on iOS devices" in the following article:

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • Acrobat Reader X no longer allows search highlights from an external highlight server.

Why did Adobe kill this feature? This really kills my use of dtSearch on my website. Does anyone have a work around or another product as good as dtsearch? This really stinks!!!!

The final post in the following topic gives some reasons it was discontinued: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3286586
You can't enable it for version 10 viewers. As for the future, who knows? Not dtSearch: http://support.dtsearch.com/dts0152.htm

  • Content Holders Not Allowing Text Styling

I'm new to B.C. and am really enjoying the new services I can use. I published my design from Muse to BC and enabled content editing within B.C. however text was not editible within "Site Editor". Support said that this may be because of the way my html conflicted with B.C. so I decided to use content holders. This addresses my needs for the most part however when I publish the site to B.C. many of the text stylings don't display in the live view (though they do display in the design view). The font type, color seem to work however bullets, indents bold talic and a few others do not.
My html isn't exotic at all however I thought this might be the problem. So, just for an experiment I tried a new content holder with just one word that was bolded and sure enough that didn't render as bold either.
Am I missing something or is this a bug?

I just used the visual editor so i suppose its inline styles. I also tried a simple bold tag on a single word and even that did not work

  • Why does the Typewriter Tool stop working in an enabled Reader document?

I am using the latest version of Adobe Reader (9.4).  I use it to complete Adobe Reader - enabled pdf forms.  The typewriter tool is available but periodically stops allowing changes in the font and font size.  These areas of the Typewriter Tool are greyed out.  You can still add text with the typewriter tool but only with the font and size that was last selected.  The only way to fix this this is to use the "Repair Adobe Reader installation" under the help menu but this almost always (>98%) requires a complete restart of the computer.  This quirk is extremely annoying and no one seems to know what causes it or how to stop it.  Has anyone else had this problem and is there a permanent solution for this problem?

Is the damage actual or only display (are the layers complete according to their previews in the Layers Panel)?
Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
What have you done for trouble-shooting so far? (Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved mis usually a good starting point):

  • Highlight tool, typewriter tool, etc. disappeared + gone from menu

I installed Acrobat 9.5.5 Pro as part of the CS4 Suite several years ago.  I'm a casual user of Acrobat 9 Pro.  I have used the Highlight tool and Typewriter tool on many documents over the years.  Many that I have saved on my computer.  They have renderable text!
Suddenly the Highlight tool and Typewriter tool, and others, have disappeared + are gone from the Tools + its sub-menus.  I'm a pretty savvy computer user.  I don't recall that I did anything to change the Tools menu.
When I go to View\Toolbars\More Tools... the the Highlight tool and Typewriter tool don't show there either.
I reinstalled Acrobat 9 Pro from the original CD... the tools menu is still missing the Highlight tool and Typewriter tool, and others. (I say "others" because, although I may not have used them, I sense there were previously more tools visible on the Tools + its sub-menus
Can anyone advise me how to recover the Highlight tool and Typewriter tool?

This happens to all PDF's, those created by me or otherwise.  The files are not protected.
You pointed me to a link as a possible solution: "To use the Typewriter tool in Reader 9 on a PDF opened in the browser, enable this right on the PDF using Adobe Acrobat Professional." => "Choose Tools > Typewriter > Enable typewriter tool in Adobe Reader." => I don't have a problem with Reader 9.  I cannot find this option in my Acrobat 9.5.5 Pro.
Neither the Highlight tool or Typewriter tool exist in the More Tools menu.
I cannot select highlighted text that I created by itself.  I can select a block of text that contains highlighted text within the block, however I cannot modify it.
If I try to select a text box that I created with my mouse, it flashes a light blue shade very briefly as I left click on it, but does not actually select the box and allow me to access it.
This is so strange.   I can't imagine what dumb thing I may have done to cause this.

  • Acrobat X Standard--Typewriter Tool

I recently switched from Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to Acrobat X Standard.   May those using the Standard version enable the typewriter tool for Reader?  When I select Save As-Reader Extended PDF, it only gives the option for Enabling Forms Fill-In.  When I saved my document, the typewriter tool was not activated for the users having access to Reader only.  Thanks.

    Hello,
I'm sorry you're having trouble with Acrobat. Unfortunately,

  • Adobe Reader highlight tool no longer filling text, just creating a line around the text

The Highlight tool in Adobe reader is no longer working as it used to.  Instead of filling the text, as it used to, the tool just creates a line around the text.  This makes the highlights much harder to spot.
I'm running Win 8 and using Adobe Reader XI version 11.0.09.
I've attached a screenshot to illustrate.  The way the tool used to work, they way I want it to, is shown by all the highlighted text in the document.  The way it currently works, is shown on the first line of text , where a portion of the text has been highlighted using the tool as it works now.  I just creates a yellow line around the text.
I've checked the way the highlight settings are on both the old highlighted text and the new text and they appear identical.  Both the colour and opacity percentage settings are the same.
    Very frustrated.  Any help appreciated.

Very strange. I'm not sure what the reason for this behaivour is, but try right-clicking one of the previous highlights and selecting "Make Current Properties Default". Then try to create a new highlight...
    Did that.  No effect.

  • Embedded Windows Reader 10.1.2 Crashes Using the Typewriter Tool

Since Reader 10.1.2 my typewriter tool documents are not working properly in an embedded Adobe Reader window, e.g. in Firefox or Internet Explorer.
Opening the first file at http://www.ld-didactic.de/software/1.pdf shows the typewriter tool window as usual.
Opening the second file at http://www.ld-didactic.de/software/2.pdf doesn't show the typewriter tool window anymore.
Also, opening the first document again will not show the typewriter tool window again. Instead the Reader crashes often while loading more typewriter documents or while closing the embedded Reader.
I tested it with Adobe Reader 10.1.2 in Firefox and Internet Explorer on Windows Vista and Windows 7 x64 systems. It worked with Adobe Reader 10.1.1.
    Can anyone reproduce this issue?
    Michael

Did you open the files inside Firefox or Internet Explorer using the embedded Reader?
Do you have Adobe Acrobat or Reader 10.1.2 installed on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system?
Only the first attempt opens the typewriter toolbar correctly on the systems I tested. Later on no typewriter toolbar opens again and I often get BEX (buffer overflow exceptions) resulting in DEP (Data Execution Prevention) exceptions:

  • How can I extend features and enable typewriter tool in Adobe Reader

    Hello,
I have forms that I need users to be able to complete and save, but they also need to be able to use the typewriter tool to type stuff in areas of forms that don't have fields. Is this possible? If I enable the typewriter, I can't extend features and vice-versa...

It's one or the other. Not both.

  • Typewriter useless for reader?

I understand now that using reader (I have v9), if a pdf has no fillable fields then it is obviously a non-fillable form.  What, then, is the point of the typewriter tool?  From some things I've read, I thought this tool would allow me to actually type in the blanks.  I know there are downloads (like form filler) or online applications (like PDFescape) that allow for this, but they either take to long to format (resizing/moving text boxes) or the insertion points are too random for it too be worth the time.
I've attached the document in question; if anyone could check out the form allowances and offer any useful advice I would greatly appreciate it.

If it were enabled, you would see a message at the top of the PDF telling you and a button to the right of that message that allows you to choose the typewriter tool. In Security, Changing the document, document assembly, filling of form fields, signing and creation of template pages all would be not allowed.
I have enabled this file for you so you can see the difference.

  • Stamp and Typewriter tool gone after 9.5.2 update??

Where did the stamp and typewriter tool go when I updated to Acrobat 9.5.2??

I found that the Typewriter tool only appears on the Tools menu if the PDF you have open allows it.
With some PDF forms I open, the Typewriter is missing from the Tools, but when I switch to a different PDF it reappears.
There must be a permissions setting in each PDF that disables/enables the Typewriter tool.

  • Cannot change font, size or anything for typewriter tool

    Hello all,
I am having an issue with the typewriter tool.  I cannot seem to change my font on about 95% of my PDFs?  Every once in awhile I am able to change the font and size.  But I cannot find a consistancy and cannot figure out the issue?  When I want to write on the PDFs to change size or font, it won't allow me to.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Lorne

I believe I have good news for all who have this trouble. It's been annoying since day one.
I accidentally discovered that by setting your cursor just off the edges of the document and begin your typing, the font properties always remain easily available!
Once you have created a typed message (any number of characters is okay), you can then drag the filled-in Typewriter Text Box to any location on the document; and you can continue to edit, at will!
Using the Typewriter Tool, I've had less than 05% font selection success when I type directly on/in the document.
Using the Typewriter Tool, I've had 100% font selection success by starting my typing in this space just off the document surface. Once finished typing, I just drag the box to the document surface. I hope this works for you, too!
See image. To enlage this image, press your Ctrl key and scroll. Good luck!

  • Typewriter Tool

Do you offer a download of Adobe Acrobat that is not read-only, but includes tools, such as the typwriter tool?

The free Adobe Reader X does not allow using tools such as the Typewriter tool unless the creator of the PDF has provided permissions.
You can download the trial version of Acrobat, where all tools are available by default. https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=acrobat_pro&loc=en
