Typing mathematical formula on mac

Hi everyone,
Is any sort of softwares, like Latex on Window, to type mathematical formula presicely. And if there was any, do you have any instructions for using that? Thanks everyone.

MS Office 2011 (word) has one built in, works well, but I am a casual equation writer.

  • Mathematical Formula in a document.

Is it possible to write attractive mathematical formula in Pages? I have a trial version of Pages 09 but I can't figure out how to write formula easily, I need to write loads for my coursework hand-ins. I don't mean spreadsheet type formula that do stuff, just descriptive formulae of the type you'd write if you were doing algebra by hand. One solution is to write the equation in Grapher and paste it into pages as an image, but Grapher doesn't allow you to type subscripts, so it's not ideal. The latest version of Word has an equation writing tool apparently but iWork is cheaper than office for mac. Though I do find excel more powerful for the sort of scientific analysis I do so perhaps office is the better package anyway. Any ideas?

If you havnet already purchased MathType6.
Then you can use Grapher, the app you have pre-installed, for making the equations.
The only downside is that once you have copy/pasted the equation from Grapher in to your Pages dokument is that you need to change it in Grapher, then copy/paste again in order to change something in the first equation.

  • Mathematical formulas/ equations.

    hi
i recently purchased a mac book air. i use it for studying and writing detailed lab reports with mathematical formulas/equations.
i don't know how to type these onto a document. i don't want it to do the sum for me just be able to write the actual formula so i can show
how do to a question, special charters etc etc
thank you for any help anyone can give

I suggestion using the application "Grapher" located in the folder "/Utilities"
In addition to being able to write formulas and fancy equations it will actually evaluate them too.
You can select the formula you entered and then copy and paste to many other places.  IT will, generally, paste as a pdf or EPS-- which will scale very well.
    Here is an example:
You can also install MacTeX which allows you to use the LaTeX markup language to write equations.

Is this a problem with the computer or with the word processor? MS Word for example seems to think its grammar and spelling are better than mine - they are not. You have to go into MS Word preferences and uncheck all the useless "help" it wants to provide.

  • Predictive typing program for the Mac?

Has anyone heard of a predictive typing program for the Mac?
I am looking for a computer program for typing that "guesses" what word you want based on the first few letters. I have trouble typing because of physical disabilities. Voice recognition is a no go (I also have trouble with my voice).
I know cell phones have this for texting, but I've never seen it for a regular computer. An application I could type in right on my Mac, then cut and paste to other applications like Word, email, etc. Apparently there is a program called "Penfriend" for the PC that does exactly this, but I'm having trouble finding anything Mac-compatible.
Has anyone heard of a company that provides this kind of software? Any ideas on which discussion board might know?
    I have a 2006 Macbook Pro.
    Grateful for any help!

Sorry for the delay, I was waiting for a "good arm" day to start typing!
Were you using the mouse to select words? You can set
hotkeys so you can do it with the keyboard if that
would be easier - you can use a sequence like
option-1,option-2, etc., or whatever else you can
    type easily.
I tried both selecting words with the mouse, and with the coded numbers on the keyboard... I think this may be a problem for me with any predictive typing program, the whole needing-to-pick-up-your-hand thing. KeyStrokes seems about as good as you're going to get (honestly, all those languages, like magic). Maybe with a different keyboard, if I can place the numbers closer to the letters. I'll keep trying.
There's no users group that I know about. I keep
meaning to start a Yahoo list for OS X users who use
assistive tech, but I have so many things that I want
to do *wry grin* Maybe one day...
That's a great idea -- I know there must be something out there, but I've mostly found disease-specific boards (ALS, etc.).

  • Business Rule - Mathematical Formula

    Hi
Is it possible to create a business rule that derives an attributes value via a mathematical formula? For example I would like to derive the attribute product volume by simply multiplying the values in
the following attributes: Product Height * Product Length * Product Width.
I am using SQL Server MDS 2012.
Any advice on how to achieve this in MDS would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

  • How can I write mathematical formulas?

How can I write mathematical formulas?
I tried tu use the formula editor of ms word with paste and copy but it didnt work, because the formula
was not in line with the text.

I was able to use Word's equation editor; just type in the formula and copy it into the Pages document.
I've heard you can do the same thing with the equation bar in Grapher utility, but I haven't tried that.
Other options involve LaTeX, which is a typesetting program. I've looked at that but haven't really explored it.

  • Best way to include mathematical formulas?

    Hi all,
my primary interest in possibles uses of iBooks Author are textbooks with heavy load of mathematical formulas. Without serious testing there appear some ideas how it may work.
Folks, did anyone made experiences (especially with the final appearance on the ipad) including formulas both inline the main text and in individual paragraphs? Any idea about automatic referencing/numbering?
Any comments are very appreciated. Thanks for your help!

  • How do I deactivate the suggested pop up word list while typing e mail in Mac OS X Leopard

I tried to deactivate spell checking and auto spell checking in both Mac mail and in Mac system preferences. I still get a drop down list of suggested words as soon as I begin typing two letters. What could I be doing wrong? How do I get rid of this drop down list? Example: I begin typing a sentence in the text area of Mac Mail. I begin with a capital T, then I type the next letter I get a drop down list of 10 words to select from. Why is this happening?

I tried to deactivate spell checking and auto spell checking in both Mac mail and in Mac system preferences.
Hmmmm, do those settings survive a restart, or do they get reset?
Are you running any third party software that could be doing it?

  • Typing Indian Languages on Mac OS X

I have come across a few questions on the forums here asking for Phonetic Transliteration using schemes such as Baraha for different Indian Languages on Mac OS X. Unfortunately, no good answers were given (probably none existed) and the forums are now archived. Having lived through the dark days of trying to use various non-phonetic QWERTY keyboards, I decided to write my own open-source Input Method Engine (IME) called LipikaIME: https://github.com/ratreya/Lipika_IME.
LipikaIME supports Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu scripts using ITRANS, Baraha, Harvard-Kyoto, Barahavat and Ksharanam transliteration schemes. Mappings are documented here: https://github.com/ratreya/Lipika_IME/wiki. Additionally, you can add your own language or transliteration scheme using LipikaIME's configuration files. You can also use GoogleIME's SCM file format (http://www.google.com/inputtools/windows/canonical.html) to introduce your own transliteration scheme.
LipikaIME works on Mac OS X 10.8 and above. You can download the installer here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/sanskrit/LipikaIME.pkg. This application is not in the Mac AppStore because custom installers, which are required to get any IME to work on OS X, are disallowed - some day I may think of a way to work around this.

  • Mathematical formula for even dashed lines?

Is there a mathmatical formula for getting evenly distributed dashed lines in Illustrator? Something involving Pi, I assume.
I usually get double dashes next to each other or unevenly distributed dashes.
For example, I have a stroked circle with a width/diameter of 100 pixels. If I want 4 dashes with a dash of 0.5, I would need a gap of ???. If I wanted 64 dashes with 1 pixel dash, I'd need a gap of ???.

    Navarro,
The perimeter, or path length, equals PI * diameter (3.141593 * W).
A Blend with one step less than the number of dashes applied to a circle with a cut where you wish to start/stop may be your friend, as may a rotation, by 360 degrees divided by the dash number, of the first dash along with a large enough concentric circle (this may be done as an Effect and possibly expanded).

  • Doing mathematical formulas with numbers stored as strings

    Hi Everybody.
I know I must be doing something stupid here, but I just can't see it.
I'm just trying to do a simple maths formula of one number divide by another. However, one of the numbers is stored as a string.
I have tried  'X' / Ccur ({'String'}) and even done a seperate formula that succesfully converts the string to a number and  then try 'X' /  ({'conversion formula'}) and still no luck.
What am I missing and can anybody help please?
    Thanks
    Graham

    Thanks both.
Works perfectly. Didn't see the ToNumber conversion in the choices available and have not used it before.
I'll also provide better descriptions as well in the future.

  • Typing IPA Symbols in Mac OS X 10.5

Hello everyone, I am new here, and I've been searching everywhere to find out where to post this question, so I really apologize if this is not exactly the correct place for it!!
I specifically have Microsoft Word for MacBook, but I guess this question could really apply to any word processing application on a MacBook...
I am a Linguistics student and I need to type symbols in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) format. Would anybody know how to type such symbols?? I've looked through all the fonts in MS Word and none of them have the symbols I am looking for. Does anyone know if these symbols even automatically exist on the MacBook, or if they must be downloaded (and where)?
Thanks so much in advance--and even if no one else has MS Word, even if you might know how to type these symbols in another word processor, I'd still be happy to know how you did this (maybe I might also have this same application as you do and not even know it because I'm so computer-illiterate!!

    Hi Rylan,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
You're correct in assuming this may not be exactly the right place to post this question, but I sympathise with the difficulty you experienced in finding a 'right place.'
There are some IPA fonts available on the web for download, but many, if not all of the IPA symbols (eg. dʒ and ŋ ) can be found in the Unicode encoded fonts on your Mac.*
Most may not be available directly from the keyboard. To locate those that are, got to Syatem Preferences > International > Input menu and show the Keyboard Viewer. While you're there. check the box beside Character Palette to add it to the selection. And if you do not have US Extended selected as one of your keyboard choices, check the box beside this keyboard layout as well.* The Close the International pane to exit System Preferences.
If it's not already in the menu bar, these actions will add the Input menu toward the right end of your menu bar. It will appear as a small flag corresponding to your currently selected keyboard.
Keyboard viewer will show you the characters available directly from the keyboard, using the letter, symbol and number keys and using these keys and one or more of the modifier keys (shift, option, commant and ctrl).
Character Palette will show all of the characters available in the selected palette. You can drag and drop these characters from the palette into a word processor document.* Ŋ is character #406, ŋ is #407.
    Regards,
    Barry
*AppleWorks users note: AppleWorks cannot recognize or use characters using Unicode encoding, and characters ooutside the standard Roman set cannot be dragged into an AppleWorks document. Attempting to enter text using a Unicode keyboard layout will cause AppleWorks to immediately crash. You can have a Unicode layout listed in your input menu, and can use it with other applications, but you must use a Roman encoded KB layout with AppleWorks.
