Typographer's Quotes Issues Within InDesign/InCopy CS3

Before I start, I do know about the typographer's quotes preference within InDesign and InCopy CS3. [InDesign/Copy > Preferences > Type] And yes, all computers involved are indeed plugged into the wall.
Here's our issue: We have layouts wherein typographer's quotes become disabled. Our EiC has noticed this, so this has understandingly become Production's issue.
Now, I've checked all of our InDesign and InCopy users—all have typographer's quotes selected as their main preference. The InCopy and InDesign templates we've created both have typographer's quotes as the standard preference. However, with some layouts, it seems as if the preference gets disabled.
I don't know if it's a rogue computer, or some sort of interplay within the InDesign/InCopy workflow. All I would like to know is if anyone else has experienced this, and if so, what you did in order to remedy it.
Thanks!
John J. O'Sullivan

The preference for Typographer's Quotes will only apply to text set within the ID document. I do not believe that you can control the quotes when you copy+paste from another source, so whatever they are in the copied source is what you will get, regardless of pref. You can control Typographer's Quotes when you import from other sources, perhaps the option is not selected when importing. And you can toggle: command+option+shift+' without having to go into the preference to change, perhaps someone is inadvertently doing this when entering text.

  • InDesign / InCopy CS3 - won't load software but appears in task mgr

We are going through a computer upgrade and am trying to install Adobe CS3 InCopy and InDesign on these new machines.
We purchased HP 6005 Pro PC's with AMD Athlon II processors and are running Windows XP operating system.
Installing both pieces of software goes though fine.  But when you try to turn on the programs, nothing happens.  Nothing loads on the screen.  The only thing shows that the software is running is in the Task Manager.
We have plenty of memory, plenty of hard drive space.  But we can't figure out why the software won't load onto our screens.  After extensive research online, the only thing we can find is that there could be a driver incompatibility.  Nothing conclusive on whether our processors are incompatible either.
Does anyone have any insight on the issue?

This is symptomatic of a dialog open behind other windows or off-screen that is waiting for your response. It used to happen fairly often with multiple monitors, especially flat screens not running at native resolution.
Make sure you run the updater and patch to the last release, and then search this forum for "multiple monitors" and you should find a tremendous amount of discussion and a lot of things to try to correct it, including opeing a dialog in Photoshop and resizing it, and using the arrow keys to try to bring the dialog into the viewing area.
Use the special search widget on the topics page, not the general "search forums" box on the top of every page.

  • InDesign/InCopy Crashing HELP!

    InDesign/InCopy CS3
    OS 10.4.11
I am crashing in InDesign with alarming regularity.
I don't know if it is a problem with InDesign or with InCopy.
Clicking on the out port (to thread to a new text frame) is causing ID to crash.
This happens if the story is checked in OR checked out.
I have refreshed my prefs multiple times.
I thought that it was from working over the server, but it happens with the file on my HD as well.
Similar crashes have occurred when i've tried to make other changes to the inCopy stories in ID--not text, but moving the text frame, or deleting it. CRASH!
    I've submitted crash reports.
    Does anyone have any advice?

Best guess would be a font issue of some kind. Do you have ID and IC
    fully patched to 5.0.2?

  • InDesign CS5 and InCopy CS3

I work at a weekly newspaper, and we have been using and InDesign/InCopy workflow for several years. The Reporters use InDesign CS2 (never did get around to installing the CS3 upgrades we bought because at first the computers they use wouldn't handle it, and after the computer upgrades got done all around, no one ever bothered). After the stories are written, the editor reviews them in InCopy, then releases them to the page designers who are now working in InDesign CS3 as part of Standard and Premium Suites.
We are considering upgrading to InDesign CS5, but absolutely NONE of the reporters or the editor needs (or will ever use) the listed improvements included in InCopy CS5. Since there are nine InCopy products in the office, and as everyone knows the economy sucks - especially for PRINTED NEWSPAPERS these days, we really hate to have to upgrade just for upgrades sake.
I have downloaded InDesign CS5 trial to check if our CS3 files will open and work in it, after reading an article published in the Washington Newspaper, a publication put out by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, reported that one of the state's newspapers happily upgraded to CS5 and had a nightmare of problems just opening their CS4 files. This has my editor very nervious about us upgrading. So... I'm testing it out, and I can't place, then open and edit our CS3 Incopy Files. I get a message that says "this story needs toa be converted to "InCopy Document" format to edit it. I've saved it in InCopy CS3 to both incx and incd formats, and both receive the error. Has Adobe made simple InCopy files incompatible with InDesign? I can import files from just about everywhere BUT InCopy??? The Sister Program?
Please advise a simple work around, or I'll bet our upgrade is totally put off.

    Bob,
I have to feel that you aren't really reading my posts. While I did mention that our reporters and editor lessentially use InCopy for a word processing program, I did specifically mention in my last post that we use the program for exactly what it was originally intended, for reporters to write and edit, for designers to layout the text, and for writers/and or correction people to get into the files and fix problems - up until the last minute, so yes, we do need to use InCopy, in the manner we were told it was developed for. We don't use it for viewing layouts - that's what InDesign is for.
PLUS, none of our reporters have time, inclination or need to view the layout as it appears in InDesign. If they did, we'd get InDesign for them. They are busy investigating and writing stories, they don't have time to learn even the basics of layout, and frankly, they don't even want to. The one single reporter that is interested has learned some of the basics of InDesign, but she doesn't use it on a regular basis, and dosn't need or want to view the pages. She does need and want to edit a story occasionally even after it's been placed into the layout, but she want's to view it as the same copy she wrote, so she can do it quickly, not as a page layout she has to hunt thru it and every other story on the page to find the problem.
I don't mind Adobe stopping selling older versions - don't blame them at all on that one - if you're buying a new product - go buy the latest and greatest. If the version didn't matter, you wouldn't have to worry if about matching your other versions and you wouldn't need to find an old version. But why BUILD IN obselecense in a PART of a system within just a couple of years. We're using CS3 InDesign, yes, but we bought it just shortly before they came out with CS4. If we'd known when the release would be (we don't track the industry close enough to be checking on when release dates are "expected" to be) we'd have probably waited the 4 months and upgraded to that. But time wise, we haven't had the CS3 THAT long, so I don't go along with the "two versions back is too old" theory.
I'm afraid I don't quite see why the text fit would change from one version to another when the fit is based on font, text size, etc. And that doesn't change, Times Roman, 10.5 point on 10.7 leading...  And as far as split/span/balanced column features and mutiple page sizes - those aren't going to affect our work flow at all. All we need is the ability to write text, and edit that text from other desks besides the designers, as well as the designers being able to open the file to fix headline size in InDesign.
As for the reporters getting the trial version and trying it out - did you miss where I mentioned that we provided CS3 to all of them, and pretty much none of them bothered to load it onto their computers??? They don't want any bells and whistles. They want to keep going as they are going.
If they wanted to go to the latest and greatest - it'd wouldnt' be an issue - but they don't need or want it, why should they be forced to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading?
And that also brings up the issue, when we buy those 7 versions that aren't going on computers with InDesign (and the whole rest of the Standard and Design Suites) who wants to bet me that it's gonna take more hard drive space, more ram, and there's a huge potential that it ain't even going to fit on their computers and still leave room for it to think?
And just one other though - just because backwards incompatibility is a fact of life in today's programs - does that make it good or right?
What this basically means, with no specific NEED for the designers to upgrade to InDesign CS5, and the requirement that if they do we'll have to upgrade not only the reporter's versions of InCopy AND most probably, their computers, we will probably put off upgrading and wait another year and a half for CS6.

  • Overprint issue in InDesign CS3

We had an issue of overprint off in color Black in InDesign CS2/CS3. But we enabled the Overprint in preference menu. We have placed the figure in InDesign and create PDF through postscript using Distiller 8.0. Open the PDF in Acrobat 8.0 professional and run the Preflight by using the option "List 100% black objects set to knock out". It shows an error of Overprint off only in figures but it does not show in text that is set in InDesign. Please help me to solve this issue.

    Bob,
Our client does not required for exported PDF and we've been asking to create postscript through PDF. The specification was supplied by printer to create postscript. Please let me know is there any variance between postscript through PDF and Export PDF?

  • I am having issues with Sidebar files not appearing from within InDesign CS5.5. They show up fine from other Adobe applications. Using OS10.6.8.

I am having issues with Sidebar files not appearing from within InDesign CS5.5. They show up fine from other Adobe applications. Using OS10.6.8.

I would first of all trash the preference file for InDesign, make sure the application is closed then find the prefs in
/Users/USER NAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign and just throw the entire folder away, it will generate a new one after you launch InDesign again.
Now launch InDesign and see if the problems are resolved.
If not I would repair your permissions on your hard drive wih disk utility, and if that fails then di-install InDesign and re-install that single application.
Let me know if any of these suggestions work for you
I will be checking my email although you might have to wait for a response as I will be taking a microlight flight over the Victoria Falls tomorrow. Yay can hardly wait.

  • Incopy cs3 changes won't update to indesign cs3

Just the second time using incopy and indesign.  First time, worked like a dream.  Now the overall configuration is still the same but we have probs.
Changes made in indesign cs3 WILL update to incopy cs3
Any changes made to text in incopy cs3 do not update to Indesign.
I have checked folders permissions since incopy is on a pc and ind on a mac.  Seems right from the mac side.
I am worried that I first saved the indesign document in a non shared folder, then realized my mistake and saved it in a shared folder.  Could this be the problem?
I made assignments by exporting text and graphics.
We're on deadline and I'm going crazy.
    Thanks for any help

  • InDesign/InCopy CS5.5 or wait for CS6

We are currently an InDesign/InCopy workflow for our City quarterly magazine.  I have InDesign on the Mac and there are 7 InCopy stations on PC's. I currently have CS5 for InDesign but have not upgraded the InCopy users yet so for the publication we are using CS4. We are looking at upgrading everyone now to CS5.5 but with CS6 on the horizon (and all the new epublication capabilities),I am wondering if it would be wise to just wait for CS6 at this point. We won't be able to upgrade for a couple more years after we do.
    Any comments?
    Thank you,
    Holly

Ugh. I'm afraid I need to revise my remarks a bit:
It's a bit tough to find the pricing details on the web, but call an Adobe volume licesning reseller and I'm sure they'll be happy to quote it for you.
I was fooled by the nonfunctionality of the Discount calculator if you choose MultiNorthAmerican Language instead of Universal English. I turns out the rates are the same as at the Adobe Business Store.
And I guess it's not-so-good for you. $119 for a CS5.5 InDesign upgrade, and $210 for 2 years of maintenance. $89 each for the InCopy upgrades, and $76 for 2 years of maintenence. So extended out for 1 InDesign and 7 InCopy, that's $1484. Coincidently that's $742 for the upgrades and $742 for for the Update plan (how do they do that)?
But the kicker is, of course, if you had bought the upgrade plans at the same time as you bought the products, then you wouldn't be paying for the upgrade plans now. But of course, they only last 2 years...
But we've heard that Adobe is moving to a 12-month release cycle, so you theoretically expect to get two version for that $742 Update plan (CS6 and then the next one, be it CS7 or CS6.5 or whatever). Except you're inelligable to buy it today, since you don't have CS5.5.
So, umm, where does this leave you? I don't know. I guess I'm a fan of keeping current, because everything changes and you never know what you'll need. But the question is whether CS5.5 is worth it to you. So download the trial and see.
But if you upgrade to CS5.5, you should buy the maintenance. CS5.5 came out in April/May of 2011, so CS6 should come out around the same time, if everything works "acording to plan." So if you buy the maintenance in, say, February, then you'll get CS6 for the same price you paid for CS5.5, as well as the version that comes after it, asuming Adobe sticks to the same timetable.
Ugh. Maybe you should think about the subscription model, I don't know. Or increasing the number of seats so you make it over the TLP point restrictions and up to some actual discounted levels.

  • Aligning numerals and numerals in brackets within InDesign CS5 table

Hi there... I have a curly question that I have nearly cracked but it is still eluding me just slightly.
A project I am working on (Annual Report) within InDesign CS5 (Mac) contains a lot of tables with numbers listed in the financial section, as you'd expect.
I want to align all the list of numbers so that if one cell (within the table) has a series of numbers and then the next cell has another set of numbers but this time it is bracketed, that the last numeral without brackets will align with the last numeral within the brackets.
So essentially you would look at the list and the numerals will align up and down, bracketed or not...
I have been able to work this out outside of tables and within a table that is a set column width but my issues start when this style is applied to a column width that varies from the origin one where the style was created... unfortunately the columns throughout the financial section will vary in size and I can't keep making different individual styles for each varying column...
I hope someone out there has had a similar experience and can provide an answer to this what would seem fairly simple issue.
    Thanks in advance.

Would it be too much work to highlight each column:
    Align Left
    Using Tabs:
      Use Align to Decimal
      Change Decimal to ]
       Center this tab in Column

Well, I've looked at the registry and doesn't find CLSID of InDesign. Yes, you were right, InDesign not registering COM library.
But what should I do to install COM library manually? Use command regsvr32.exe but which dll should I use to register?!
This is an old problem, with an old solution http://forums.adobe.com/thread/288207
First try Kris's solution all the way at the bottom of the thread. If it doesn't work then try Anna Koloskova's solution. I actually register tlb as part of my installer for Rapid ScriptUI, to avoid issues.

  • Loss of Edits in a non cross-platform InDesign/InCopy Workflow

I have read, and understand, the cross-platform issues related to loss of edits in InCopy. We are experiencing the same issue on an all Windows network.  Some authors have experienced the following issue:
Author checks out a story and edits the content
    Author checks the story in
Later, the Author checks out the story , but the edited content is missing
    Author becomes frustrated ;-)
The worst part of this issue is that it does not happen consistently, it is random.
We are running InDesign on Window-7 64 bit machines, InCopy on Windows XP 32 bit machines, and the file server is a Windows 2003 server.  Or workflow is designed so that only one author and the InDesign designer has access to the  assignment file (We create assignments by author instead of by section).
So my question is, has anyone else experieinced these problems? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes, we are using InDesign, InCopy, Illustrator, and Photoshop CS5. We were very excited about having the ability to mix 8.5x11 and 11x17 pages for the proposal we are in the process of creating and decided to be early adopters.  I hope they get the bugs fixed soon....I am confident that they will.
    Thanks!

  • Install failing on Server and Shared Components: Indesign Server CS3

Two identical servers, same result on both servers. Windows 2003 x86 servers, up to date w/MS patches. .Net 3.5 sp1 installed. Run InDesign Server CS3 install, install takes a LONG time and then fails with the error below:
I've looked for some sort of install log and there isn't one. I've called Adobe and was told that ID Server tickets are escalated to Tier 2 support and therefore new tickets can't be opened via the phone support (that piece would have been more helpful prior to spending 60 minutes on hold waiting for a person) and they referred me to the online ticket system. The online ticketing system reports that initial contact will be made "within three business days". I'm on a customer deadline with this install and can't wait three days for resolution. Any ideas where to look for more information on the cause of the failures?
    Thanks!
    Shannon

I don't have any sort of definitive answer for you, but this was a fairly common place for the standalone to fail, too, if I recall correctly.
I have no experience with the server version, but for a standalone I would recommend an uninstall, followed by running the clean script (Using the new CS3Clean Script) then register jscript.dll on the system and reboot with a bare minimum of startups enabled. TONS of stuff you would think is innocuous would conflict with the CS3 installer.

  • What fonts come with InCopy CS3 or CS4?

    Hey gang,
Does anyone have a list of fonts that are installed with InCopy CS3 and/or CS4?

Check out Thomas Phinney's blog. He's got the CS4 list available there.

I'll go out on a limb and guess the list for InCopy is the same as InDesign.

  • Finder within InDesign CS6 cannot find files

When I use the finder within InDesign CS6 to search for images or InDesign files it won't find the files. This is especially challenging when I am trying to re-link images. (When I search outside of InDesign, I find them, no problem.) I'm running Mac OS 10.7.4. Any suggestions?

My question was not well worded, but I didn't know what other way to put it. Thanks for your help. Yes, I can browse to the images, but I'm trying to avoid that by doing a search for the file name in the search field. The search field won't let me find InDesign files either. I've included a screen shot of the dialog box to explain.

In another instance, yesterday I opened an file created 3 months ago and it allowed me to make changes, however I could not save them to the existing file, or not even to a new name.
