Typographic & Font Problem on Pdf's

Hello
Im a amateur writer and am kinda writing stuff of fiction. Im very much in to this stuff and i collect lots of medias. Recently i learned that my favorite publisher - white wolf - does provide books online. So i went and bought couple of them and saw what they have done with pdfs.
I was amazed to see all those visuals that you go through on paperbacks can be brought to pdf format and still ,text can be choosen out of them.
So i was trying to do the same. I downloaded Acrobat and Photoshop from here while back and tried some pdfing myself.
Im creating a visual on photoshop. And Add text on it. And after that i save it as pdf.
When i open it, i find some text are choosable by mouse while some are simply merged to the back ground. And i have to say, this even happens on fonts such as Arial and Verdena. I did try to merge all visiuals except of texts to see if , too much layers were making this , but alas, i still had the same problem.
Also, in photoshops text tool, there are many ,very good options. You can strike them you can small cap them and stuff. But when they are converted to pdf , all these effects dissapear and a regular font appears.
Why this might be the case as well as is Photoshop is the wrong way to achieve those pdfs thats like Whitewolfs.
When i looked through it, i came to realize there are few "possible" reasons why this is happening.
So bottom line is this
1) is Photoshop is a sufficient tool to create good pdfs (if not, which program would you suggest)
2) Typographic effects cannot be imported to Pdfs? if so how?
3) Why some fonts get to be merged while some fonts simply would not?
4) last but not least, would all these be because my photoshop is on trial
period?!
---Edit---
I gotto add these infos. Win Xp Sp3 Photoshop cs4 Acrobat 9 (both trial)
---Edit---

I have never used QuickBooks (I use an accountant because I really don't understand "accounting" and tax returns and could get myself into huge trouble VERY quickly!) but I believe that there have been conflicts reported between QB (or was it Quicken?) and Adobe apps. in the past.
Which font were you trying to use?
Perhaps you have to stick with regular "System" fonts that are common to both platforms (such as Arial) when using QB?
And do you have to set your choice of a language in QB's prefs.?

  • Times Font Problems With PDFs

    Hello,
I am having an intermittent problem with PDFs with Times fonts.
Sometimes the PDFs print OK and other times words will be jumbled together or strange characters will take the place of certain punctuation marks. There are several other things that seem to happen, but I cannot remember every issue. Every time there is a problem, the PDF "Looks good on the monitor!".
This happens on 10.3.9 and Os9 machines also.
I have done Permission Repairs on a regular basis, cleaned my Font Caches, used FontFinagler etc.
I have run Norton on the Os9 machines, taken all fonts out of ATM and put them back in, trashed Adobe prefs, etc.
Sometimes this happens on PDFs from PCs, other times it happens on PDFs from Macs.
All of the versions of Acrobat we are using are Professional versions with the latest updates, so that shouldn't be the issue.
If anyone has any input on this, it will make my life considerably easier.
    TIA,
    David

    David,
It sounds like the problem PDF docs did not have the fonts embedded into the docs when they were created originally, and the Times font on your computer is different. A couple of possible options, (a) ask the original creator to re-make the PDF doc with embedding the fonts, or (b) try re-writing the doc by doing a Save As... in Acrobat.
    Hope this helps.

  • Font problem in PDF

    Hi,
I have another problem with the PDF text alignment.
I am using Oracle 9iDS for developing the reports and PDF version 6.0. There's a letter typ report that I am making. In the signature part the fields are right aligned. They are aligned correctly when viewed at our end.
But when I deploy the report at the server (Oracle 9iAS) at our client's location, and view the report in PDF, the signature text doesn't seem to be aligned. The results are the same even if I use the text fields instead of the fields.
However, this problem is not there if I align the text to the left. How do I solve the problem? Is this problem occuring because of the difference of uifont.ali file on our machines? Here I would mention that we have installed Asian fonts on our machines. Am using SJIS and unicode fonts for the reports. The only difference between the clients machine and ours is that they are using more fonts than us.
Can you help us out with this issue?
Why is the difference inspite of the similar configuration.
    OS is Win 2K.

    Hi,
since yesterday we use Oracle Reports Services 10.1.2.3.0 as our productive reports services.
When we print PDF reports on one of the following printers, the fonts size isn't correct (in the report defined as font size 8, on the paper the font size is about 16!).

    Hi,
I'm afraid that this was a couple of years ago so I can't remember the font we used.
If memory serves then I think it is something to do with True Type fonts.
Have you searched Metalink? I think that's where I originally got some advice about the fonts in PDF documents.

  • Preview and Adobe fonts problem/missing in PDF

I have a PDF document that doesn't show some fonts. The PDF was displaying fine on preview and then all of the sudden the next day it got messed up. I didn't performed any update or installed any new app. The problem persists in both Preview app and Adobe Reader; at least Adobe tells me: "Cannot find or create the font 'BYGBIR+Helvetica-12-0'. Some characters may not display or print correctly." Here's a screen shot of what it looks like.

    L Huffman,
First of all, Welcome to the Discussions!
Try to select one of files in question by clicking once and then press the key combo command + i or go to the File menu and select Get Info.
Once the Get Info pane is open drop down (if not already in the open position) the disclosure triangle next to "Open with:" and change the application that will open "this" file. To change all files of the type make sure to click on the "Change All" button.
That should do it....post back if that is not what you are trying to do.

  • Printing problem when PDF is sent to the printer with certain fonts - missing text

I'm running into a printing problem when PDFs containing certain characters of the Calibri font are used.  The text in large sections of the PDF is missing on the paper version, but the text is there on the screen.  It's also happened when the PDFs we created were e-mailed out to a client and printed on their printer.  The problem is not present when printing directly from the programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, etc.).  I've been trying to get tech support from Adobe on this, but every time I call they apologize and say they will call back in 4-6 hours with an answer.  Same result each time, no call back.  If anyone from Adobe is listening, it's case number 184891587.  The font appears as an embedded subset when I look at the document properties.  Sometimes deleting one or two Characters allows for larger text blocks to be printed - i.e. removing a long dash in bold from the heading of a paragraph makes the paragraph reappear when printed to paper from PDF.  In all cases the PDF appears correct on the screen.  Printing as an image allows the text to appear, but the image quality isn't acceptable for small text, even at the 600 dpi setting on the printer.  If the PDF is sent out by e-mail, we do not have control over the end-user's printer setup anyway, so we need this to work in all cases.
The setup/process I'm using is as follows:
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit
Microsoft Office 2013 - problem is present when printing documents from Word, Excel or Visio.  Even other variations on documents.
I've tried Acrobat versions 11.0.0 to 11.0.5 as well as Acrobat Pro 11.0.0 and 11.0.1.  Same Result
Printing to Adobe PDF as the printer, from the third party application
Printing to a Xerox printer from PDF using Acrobat - Text missing
Client prints to Konica printer - Text missing
I print to the wide-format Ricoh (which also does 11x17) and the text is present.
Is there something I'm missing?  Is the entire font not getting embedded into the PDF file?  I noticed that rolling back to a much older version of the Calibri font (1.02 compared to 5.72) makes the problem mostly go away, but it's not completely gone.  Is it possible the font is too large to be completely embedded?  Where can I go from here?

Success!  At least for now.  It looks like my problem was fixed with Adobe's most recent update, 11.0.06.  From the release notes:
    PDF creation
Added support for Lotus Notes 9.
Added support for WebCapture in IE 11.
Added support for conversions from AutoCAD 2013.
3652540 A blank pdf is created for files having hidden visual style.
3601108 Flow Chart converts as a multicolored square.
3654345 Word documents missing parts of images in conversion to PDF.
3654572 Temporary file size increases when creating pdf by combining multiple files into one PDF.
3670155 PDF file created with Distiller XI prints incorrectly to some printers. (Emphasis mine)
3599407 Checkbox check marks do not appear in these files.
3663233 IE Web Capture in localized OS: Icons and drop-down menu items are missing and conversion dialog is not localized.
3651931 Chrome Only: Few web pages when converted to pdf from Chrome plugin doesn’t show up the Save As dialog.
3597910 EPM Mode On: Web capture is not working on Windows 8-32 bit when cache folder is missing.
3610644 Firefox 23.0: With Firefox version 23.0 (latest), the WebCapture icon shows up very dim as if it is disabled.
3650244 ODA falis to convert DWG files to PDF for large files.
I don't know if that's definately what solved the problem, but it sure sounds similar and this is the update that made the printing problem go away.  We can't get the PDFs to fail at this point with our printers, even with Calibri 5.72.  I'll come back to thread if we have printing problems at the end-user locations.

  • 10.6.8 combo & 10.6.7 pdf fonts problem

Does the 10.6.8 update combo correct the pdf fonts problem that was inherent to 10.6.7?  After a couple days of stress I had to do the lengthy 10.6.7 uninstall process in order to refine my doctoral dissertation.  This has made me gun-shy & fearful of updates.  Is it safe to update now?

  • IPad export to PDF font problems

Hi guys, would really appreciate any help you can provide on the following:
So I can happily create wonderful documents on pages or keynote. The issue is when I export then to PDF which is by far, what I think is the best option as it seems to retain the layout and picture options etc, it. Seems that when I email this to people who don't have mac's the fonts on the PDF cannot be viewed.
It seems that basic fonts are ok like arial, but anything that is somewhat interesting like apple gothic or even helvetica cannot be displayed.
Does anyone have a solution to this, ie. Is there somewhere I could direct people to go to download apple fonts, or worse case is there anyway I can print from my pc, retaining the font.
    Many thanks for any replies....

Unfortunately, the feedback link is next-of-kin to useless. Getting no response from them, and not knowing how many others have similar complaints is just pi**ing in the wind. If I am going to go to all the trouble to analyze a problem in detail and document the parameters, I am not going to just "throw it over the fence" and hope for the best.
To that end, I just got off the phone with Apple Support. They are aware of the problem and have a team working on it.
After discussing the issue at length, it seems that the best work-around is to use the iwork.com sharing gimmick. View the files from a browser and print (if needed) from the browser.
You cannot use the "download as PDF" from iwork.com, because it generates corrupted PDFs, just like iPad does.
It is also possible to be VERY selective about the fonts that are used when creating a document from scratch, but there is no easy way to know which fonts will work and which ones generate embedding errors.
In my experience, most of the new document templates will NOT work.
Anyway, the upshot is that there will be an update to the iPad Apps that will fix the problem. They do not know when that will be.
It is suggested that the more complaints that they get about the issue, the faster it will be fixed. It is POSSIBLE that the feedback link may do something in this regard.
If this issue is important to you, I would suggest taking the time to visit
    http://www.apple.com/support/expert/
and talk to a real, live, human being about the problem.

  • PDF and Font Problems 10.6.8

    Ugh.
    MBP13 7,1 (mid 2010) 2.4g C2D 4G Ram
I use Vectorworks 2011 to produce CAD drawings for customers and the plant. Recently I began having issues with my PDFs of my CAD not being fully distilled - various issues but primarily most dimensions not visible. I have read that PDF issues cropped up beginning with 10.6.7 and that certain PS fonts can be the issue. As well as outdated PDF readers used by my recipients. In a short-sighted fit of frustration I began monkeying with Font Book and Font Caches.
    My maladies are
    1. My PDFs are incomplete
    2. Received MS Office filed open "blank".  Now MS OFFICE 2011 no longer has common Fonts such as Arial and Times Nee Roman.
Can I fix this or do I need to go back to 10.6.6 and reinstall Office?
    Thanks in advance.
BTW this forum is surprising difficult to nav on an iPhone.

  • Font embedding problem in PDFs

Since upgrading to Leopard from Tiger-
We are losing fonts embedded into pdfs, either saved through Preview or Adobe Indesign CS3.
The preview of pdfs, both in the finder windows and in Entourage email attachments are missing fonts too. Sometimes opening them resolves the issue, but not usually.
This has occured to both User and System level fonts.
We have cleaned the font caches, but this only provides a temporary fix.
We have tried not using our Suitcase Fusion and just letting FontBook manage the fonts on this machine, the problem still manifests itself.
The only change in the equation from a perfectly operational machine was the change from Tiger to leopard.
    Any thoughts/help = greatly appreciated.

  • Pdf fonts problem in 10.6.7 - resolved in 10.6.8 combo update?

The pdf fonts problem in 10.6.7 forced me to go through the long uninstall process after a couple days stressing over what the problem was -- it was Adobe tech support that finally informed me what the problem was. Is the problem fixed in the 10.6.8 combo update?  Since I got no replies when I asked this question a different way yesterday, can anyone say (for helpful answer points) whether Apple would be inclined to answer this question if I just call them up (i.e., without existing AppleCare)?   Any other suggestions for getting official support on this question?   As it stands, I fear updating at all, and could be stuck with 10.6.6 for a long time.

  • Font problem when converting to pdf

I have been struggling with this for a long time! When I export to pdf for some reason the fonts become really mangled. I use several fonts but it is especially baskerville 12 that looks really bad. I have searched and searched but can't figure out why it comes out like that?
If anyone can be of help it will be much appreciated!

I have the same issue. From what I found online it originated sometime during this update (http://indesignsecrets.com/mac-os-x-10-6-7-update-causes-font-problems—but-proba bly-not-in-indesign.php)? I am running OSX Lion but it seems the issue was inherited...
My situation is using Pages with Baskerville font. It appears wonky in Adobe Reader but as expected in Preview.
Found a temporary fix at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4320355#4319047 . It would be nice for this to be included in an upcoming patch.

  • Arial Font problems in old pdfs!  {Pics inside}

    Hello all.
Here is the problem as best I can explain it!
I have pdf files that were origanally created on a Mac (I am using Win 7) using Arial Narrow font family.  I read all the issues posted
on the Arial Narrow font problems but none have solved the problem.  Below are screen shots of what I think might be the cause.
When I look at the properties in Acrobat for the pdf in question here is what fonts show up.
The only font that displays correctly is Arial-Black true type font.  The Type1 ArialNarrow displays
as shown in the picture below. One other thing to note:  Notice how ArialNarrow is all one word?
Is that maybe why Illustrator is having a problem with it?  I have tried to find it with no luck.
When opened in Illustrator CS2 this is what is displayed.
The fonts are in my fonts directory both in Windows and Illustrator.  I even loaded the older 2.35
version that is mentioned all over the net.
The problem is that I have hunderds of these documents some with over 200 pages each.  I have messed
with this for several days now and am at a loss as to what to do next.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! ! !
    Mark

Substituting fonts in Illustrator using Type>Find font is not going to work.
If you look at the screenshots you'll see the fonts are CID fonts with custom encoding. The fonts on Marks Computer probably have ANSI encoding (i.e. standard western character set) and the character maps will not match. As a result you will not get legible text but just squares or other things (diamonds, dots etc.)
Mark sent me a file to look at and below is what I wrote in a direct e-mail to him.
    <quote>
The problem is that the PDF was made directly from InDesign, which converts the fonts to CID fonts (normally used for Asian fonts like Chinese, Japanese and Korean) and in doing so it created a character map (encoding) that is not compatible with our regular fonts which use the Western Character set (ANSI encoding). Which explains why replacing the embedded font with one on your system doesn't work.
There is some info on the Adobe website at the following links:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329611.html
    http://indesignsecrets.com/cid-identity-h-fonts-are-back.php
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/324995
    <end quote>
The CID charachter problem also exists in Acrobat 7 and 8, but got solved in Acrobat 9.
The only thing that worked to get a PDF with readable and editable text was to use an OCR program (Abby FineReader in my case, but Omnipage can do the same) to process the PDF and in doing so the embedded fonts were basically OCR'ed using system fonts and then saving it again as a PDF had basically the same effect as replacing the embedded fonts by system fonts. After that opening the PDF in Illustrator gave normal text and the file could be edited. Though Serif DrawPlus did a better job in opening the PDF as an editable file.
In this case the OCR route is an option because the PDF file contained a table. If it had been a drawing the OCR option might be less useful depending on how the OCR software would handle the drawing part, unless getting the text out of the PDF and reinsert it into the drawing would be sufficient.
Maybe the above info is of some use for those who are dealing with the same problem.

  • Data visibility problem in PDF file generated from R/3 system

    Hi all,
We are converting the output of a Smartform into a PDF format. From this smart from, we receive data in OTF format, after which the required data is converted from OTF format to PDF format. Then PDF data is sent through mail using FM SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1 as an attachment.
For the above mentioned Smartform, we have defined Paragraph & Character font type as 'TIMES' in smart style. But when we receive the PDF file (through mail), some data of appears in other fonts:
    1) When PDF file is generated from Development system, the different font types which are used by PDF are Arial and Times-Roman. In this case, we are able to see the PDF output and faced no major problems because both of these fonts are supported by PDF file format.
    2) When PDF file is generated from Testing system, the font types which is used by PDF is Arial. In this case, we are able to see the PDF output because this font is supported by PDF file format.
    3) When PDF file is generated from Production system, the different font types which are used by PDF are Arial, Times-Roman and PBRS. Here, we are able to see the data which is displayed in Arial font and Times-Roman font. But we are not able to see the data which is displayed in PBRS font because this type of font is not supported by PDF file format. If we copy the distorted text from PDF file and paste it in MS-Word then the required data is clearly visible and that is due to the reason that MS-Word supports PBRS font.
But as per smart style we have used only 'TIMES' font, then why different fonts are appearing in PDF file?
What settings are required to be done to make this data visible?
Any pointer to solve this issue will be really appreciable. Thanks in advance for your help.
