U-verse, Time Capsule and IPv6

Can anyone recommend the best settings related to IPv6 when using ATT U-verse and Time Capsule?  Time Capsule is set-up in Bridge Mode and IPv6 enabled on U-Verse Modem/Router.
Should IPv6 be set to Automatic or Link-Local on Time Capsule or should I disable IPv6 all together?

Because the other settings either do not work, or do not work reliably.....but Apple is "working on it".

  • U-verse, Time Capsule, and 2 Switches, OfficeJet 6500

I know just enough about networks to screw them up, so I'm asking for help. I've had U-verse for about a year and no problems. Connection went from U-verse modem then out one port (Let's call this Port 1) to a computer and out another port (Port 2) to a Time Capsule. From the TC one port went to a comp and another to a switch that connected to U-verse DVR, DVD, and XBox. Just got an HP OfficeJet 6500 and tried to hook it up. Added another switch at the end of the Port 1 cable to split between printer and comp. Worked great. Tried to set up printer from 2nd comp (attached to TC) and couldn't find it. AirPort Utility told me I had double Nats since TC was still configred as a router. Went to bridge mode and that was when the problems ensued. Both computers can't find the printer, and my computer told me today that it had the same IP address as another device on the network (This is the one at the end of Port 1). That had NEVER happened before.
So the big question I guess is, do I have my network set up correct? U-verse wireless off, TC creating wireless network in bridge mode. If this looks correct any suggestions on the printer issue?

The TC in Bridge Mode would be the correct setting since you already have a router (the U-verse device) "upstream" from the Time Capsule.
Whenever you make a change in a network component...routers in particular....you always want to perform a complete power cycle on the entire network.
Power everything down....U-verse, TC, computers, switches, printers.....order is not important
Wait a few minutes, then start the U-verse gateway first and let it run a moment by itself
Start the TC the same way
Work out through the network starting devices in sequence one at a time until everything is powered back up
You may need to reconfigure the printers again so that they find the correct "path" on your "new"' network

  • Time Capsule and IPv6.

    Hi Guys,
Has anyone succeeded in configuring their TC to support IPv6 natively? So no tunnelling, but native v6 from your provider. I've been trying just about anything but can't get it to work.
Any ideas? To be sure I use a Draytek Vigor 120 modem with IPv6 firmware and the TC is configured to route PPPoE from the Draytek.

It's a chicken-and-egg thing. Sites won't go IPv6 until ISPs provide the right infrastructure, and ISPs won't provide the right infrastructure until forced to because some sites are IPv6 only.
I think you'll see a lot more action on this in the next two years now that the main pool of IPv4 address is exhausted.
Truly, today, though, essentially nothing on the net publicly is IPv6. I actually hooked up with Hurricane Electric's free tunnel and had IPv6 working at my house for a short time (yes, through my Time Capsule -- worked fine), and I had lots of trouble finding anything to surf. Yes, Google and a few other sites have IPv6 sites, but they really are essentially no different than IPv4, or else they are specific sites just meant to test IPv6 (no real content). So, at least as of today, you're not missing anything.
Very few US ISPs have IPv6. Most are just in the beginning of tests with a few select customers. This is going to change over the next few years.
It isn't as simple as just flipping a switch, because as I mentioned, every computer becomes a fully addressable node on IPv6, and DHCP goes away, to be replaced mostly with a protocol where your ISP gives you a prefix, and your equipment appends a long suffix. Those two together uniquely identify your computer and can be found from ANYWHERE on internet. That means the routing protocols have to track a phenomenally larger number of routes than they did before, or (in practice) they have to hand off the job to routers down the line. The whole addressing scheme works differently and it will take some time for the ISP equipment to be fully compliant.

  • Time Capsule and IPv6 in Bridge Mode

When the Time Capsule is placed into Bridge Mode (i.e. operating as a layer 2 device) the device will NOT participate in IPv6 Stateless Autoconfiguration and hence will not use IPv6. This limits my ability to perform incremental backups to my home IPv6 network when my Macbook Pro resides on my "away" IPv6 networks. I've checked the settings endlessly but can't seem to find any "enable IPv6 Stateless Autoconfiguration in bridge mode" button. Am I missing something or is IPv6 used only when the device is operating as a Layer 3 device when a non RFC1918 address is in use on the WAN port?

Because the other settings either do not work, or do not work reliably.....but Apple is "working on it".

  • Best way to set-up U Verse, Time Capsule and Express to Extend Network

I'm trying to extend my WIFI signal with AP Express and TC using an AT&T U Verse router. Neither the Express nor the TC are directly connected to the U Verse router. Both the Express and the TC show they are connected to the network but when I try and edit the settings to extend the network rather than join the network they both show as not connected any longer. Before on DSL the Express and TC were connected as extending the network (slow but connected). The house is 3 levels U Verse in in the basement. Trying to get a connection on the 3rd floor. We have multiple iPads, iPhones, Mac Book Pro's, an i Mac and Direct TV receivers.
What's the best way to set this up to extend the range of what we have?

You cannot extend range from non-apple routers.
So both the TC and express will join the wireless of the uverse and then become dumb clients..
You need at least one of the two units plugged into the uverse by ethernet.. then the other device can extend that network.
Consider using EOP adapters if your distance is such that even with the correct setup you don't get the range you need. Or better still do it properly and wire it with ethernet.
It is possible to use the Express as a bridge..
So say setup on the first floor.. a wireless bridge from the express to the uverse.. then plug the ethernet into the TC.. and use the TC in bridge mode.. it will not be fast but it can work.
Reset everything to factory and start over.. as you will not be able to get this working without a full reset of the apple routers.
Note still not ideal but it might give you more range than extend wireless with say express plugged into the uverse.

  • How will the Time Capsule support IPv6 and coop with the new emerging security threats that will emerge due to the new technical possibilities that IPv6 provide?

How will the Time Capsule support IPv6 and coop with the new emerging security threats that will emerge due to the new technical possibilities that IPv6 provide?

    Cross your fingers and hope.
Obviously if there is any big or known threat Apple will send out a firmware fix.
But the TC is designed to be end user simple device. It has no firewall that is visible at any rate. I don't know that it truly doesn't have a firewall but it is not part of the end user controls.
IMO if you have major security concerns that go beyond end device firewall, which is where Apple do put most of the security, since firewall in the router is plainly not a stop to anybody deliberately downloading an infected file or website, and most end users.. do not want a firewall that prevents them using the web like a business does, where only certain ports are allowed. Everything else tough luck.. you are not allowed to use it. Then TC is unsuitable for you anyway.. buy a proper firewall appliance.

  • XBOX ONE. I have the xbox one and the airport time capsule and cant connect to most xbox live games and zero parties. I have 0 experience in all this but somehow was able to change NAT to open but still wont connect. HELLLPPPP

Okay folks, I need your help out there.
So the nerdy side of me went and picked up the XBOX ONE on release day. Its awesome by the way, BUT..... I cant seem to connect to most xbox live games and absolutely ZERO parties. At first I just thought it was something to do with the xbox itself and would eventually fix itself, but i was wrong. After looking into it on microsoft, i found out that it had to do with my NAT settings on the airport itself. I guess apple and xbox are not compatiable for xbox live and it makes it difficult to have an open NAT setting and is a huge PAIN.
I was able to pinpoint one that the airport time capsule was blocking the IPV6 something or another. Anyways, I unblocked that, and reset the modem and time capsule and jumped on the xbox and now have open NAT settings but still cant connect to multi-player.
Upon further searching, i was told to uncheck the UPNP on my time capsule as well, but have no idea how to find that.
I know it seems confusing, but thats the best i can describe it.
    tthanks all

Be a long long time before I see an Xbox One.. but whoever told you to uncheck the upnp in the TC.. tell them their dreamin' .. upnp is not support by Apple in any computer or router, never has been.. Apple deliberately wrote their own version called NAT-PMP to do the same thing.. dynamically open ports at the request of an application or client computer.
So there is nothing like that to uncheck.. and as a matter of interest.. there no box to check or uncheck for NAT-PMP either.. since apple do not believe in end user adjustment of settings.. they simply do not exist.
You will have to manually forward all ports required by the Xbox via the TC. For multi-player games you probably need to open more ports than the standard to allow just xbox live. You will need to check the ports required and open them.
    OR
Buy a standard vista UPNP compatible router.. and use that.. and simply put the TC in bridge in the network.
I have not seen posts yet about xbox one.. but there are plenty about xbox and ps3 and the fact that Apple really doesn't give a hoot about games consoles.
This is a good basic post for older xbox.

  • Re. Time Capsule and WD My Book Hard Drive

Hi, I used to have my WD My Book Hard drive connected to my IMac to run back with Time Machine. I then decided to try to change the back up to via wireless to my Time Capsule, and at the same time connect my WD My Book to the Time Capsule. Everything woorked OK, but the back up speed is so slow that I have decided to move back to the old set-up. The problem is now that when I connect the WD My Book back directly to my IMac, the IMac does not find this external hard drive. Did the configuration on the WD My Book change when I connected it to the Time Capsule, and how do I get the IMac to find it again ?

    Tom,
What do you mean "the IMac does not find this external hard drive"? You mean, when you reconnect it via USB, the WD MyBook does not show up on the desktop or Sidebar of Finder windows? Check the following settings:
    *On Desktop*
In the Finder, go to the Finder menu and select "Preferences".
    Click “General” in the toolbar.
Ensure that all the items under "Show these items on the desktop" are checked.
    Close the preference window.
    *In Finder SideBar*
In the Finder, go to the Finder menu and select "Preferences".
    Click “SideBar” in the toolbar.
Ensure that all the items under "Devices" & “Shared” are checked.
    Close the preference window.
Or do you mean, it does show up on the desktop, but Time Machine no longer backs-up to it. The way Time Machine treats wireless storage verses directly connected storage is different. You can't switch a drive back and forth between directly connection and wireless and expect Time Machine to continue to backup to the same destination file. It will start a new full backup of your system.
Hope this clarifies thing a bit.
    Cheers!

I want to add airport express.  I now have time capsule and I am confuse.  Do I setup the express and then time capsule to the express?

Setup the Express to wirelessly extend the Time Capsule, or vice versa depending on which one is already set up. Or you could use bridge mode which involves using an Ethernet cable or Powerline plugs.

  • Just bought Time Capsule and do not intend to use as a router. Can I use it just as a wireless backup to my Mac?

Hi all - Just bought Time Capsule and do not intend to use as a router given that my Uverse router works splendidly.  Can I use it just as a wireless backup to my Mac? Sorry if this is a boneheaded question, but this is my first time backing up my machine ( I know, foolish). Thanks!

Your problem will be if you use wireless for internet then you cannot do both internet and backup at once.. you still should plug the TC into the uverse router and set it in bridge mode.. you can setup wireless if you like on the TC and use either TC or uverse but you must work out how to do both at once.
If you use ethernet on the Mac then wireless to backup is also a bit of an issue.. please ask as I can show you the setup.. or visa versa.. wireless for internet and ethernet for backup..

  • I just bought a time capsule and it will not connect to preexisting home WiFi.

I just bought a time capsule and it will not connect to preexisting home WiFi.  The Airport Utility recognizes one of my neighbors networks but not mine.  I have ATT&T U-verse.  I understand I can use the Airport time capsule as a router but would prefer to use it in my existing network

Can this connection be done wirelessly or wired? I'm using a Mac Tower that does't have a wireless card if that's important.
As long as you have two apple routers then it is up to you which way you do it.
You can connect them by ethernet and use it setup as roaming network.. for wireless.. it will simply be bridged on the router side. Ethernet is much the faster solution.
But if you want to use wireless link that is also fine if the range is not too great. Then ethernet to the computer.. so you effectively have a wireless bridge...
    so, Cablemodem----Airport Extreme- - - - - - - -wireless link- - - - - Time Capsule------computer
Where the more solid lines are ethernet.. that is possible setup. And using the TC directly on ethernet to the computer will keep your backup speed good while also giving you hopefully your full internet speed so that works well.

  • Time Capsule and External HD as Network Attached Storage

I was wondering if I can
    a. Attached and external hard drive to my Time Capsule and access is wirelessly?
    b. Back up to that external hard drive using Time Machine?
    c. Access that external hard drive and Time Capsule from a remote place off site?
    Thanks

    a. Yes
    b. I think so. But why not just use the TCs hard disk for TM backups?
    c. Apparently so based on these instructions I have found: (Haven't tried it myself)
In the Finder preferences check the box "show server" to mount to desktop.
    Under Airport Utility:
Disks - check over wan and check file sharing and write down the ip address
Under the Finder, use the GO function to find your server ie the hard drive on the TC. In the window provided type afp://ip address then password if applicable. The hard drive should mount and be shown on the desktop.

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.

  • Time Capsule and time machine with third party router

    Hi,
This is the first time I use this site.
I have over three years old Mackbook.
    APP has expired.
Now I want to know how to set up time capsule in a new environment.
I moved from Australian and Singapore.
I was using Time Capsule and Airport Extreme in Australia.
    I have moved to Singapore.
I am using router provided by Singtell(Singapore Telecommunication). I do not have an Airport Extreme anymore. My housemate and I are using wireless internet-sharing. Needless to say that internet provider is SingTell.
Now I would like to know how to use time capsule and time machine with the network created with a router provided by SingTell.
    What I did so far is;
Connected the time capsule to the power point.
Orange lamp lit and flashed for a few second and stop. Orange lamp stayed on.
Apple Utility does not recognise Time Capsule.
I prefer to use it wirelessly.
There are only two USB cable ports installed.
One is used to synchronize iPhone.
Other is used for a printer.
but if it is not possible, wired would be OK.
    MacBook 13 inch 2.0 GH Late 2006
I hope that someone able to give me an answer for this.
    Cheers,

In this case the apple support people reveal a truly poor understanding.
You must bridge something.. you either bridge the TC.. which 90% of people do.. or you bridge the dsl router.. which some people do manage to do.. You will have to look that up for your modem and check with verizon if they support pppoe authentication.
IMHO just bridge the TC as you were told not to do.. as they are simply wrong about that.
If you already tried this and it didn't work.. try again.. it is the correct approach.
You have no choice. But this time let me suggest you do it using the 5.6 airport utility.. as the apple toyland v6 airport utility is likely half your trouble.
So here is how to get the utility into your computer.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Then open the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.. go to internet tab. Connection sharing.. off bridged mode.
    Select this and update..
Then all your IP addresses will be wrong.. I suspect this is where things are going wrong.. and messing you up.
Once the TC is bridged.. turn off everything and restart.. in correct order.. modem.. TC.. client computers etc. 2min gap between each.
