U2 iPod completely dead

I swear to God...no one post some garbage about resetting the iPod. When I plug it into the cradle I get the Apple icon. When I launch iTunes it doesn't recognize the iPod.
And as soon as I take it out of the cradle and do the garbage recommended on this site (hold the menu, blah blah BLAH) the screen goes completely blank. Dead. Nothing.
Other icons that pop up include a file folder with a question mark and a battery charge sign with a question mark.
So tell me...without posting some junk pointing me to some half-assed article with little help: WHAT IS WRONG!!!!?!??!

Have you actually read through those articles though???

Also, you say the apple logo shows up when plugged in. Then what?

  • IPOD completely dead! No response at all!

I put my ipod in radio/alarm clock as usual and removed it a few hours later to find it completely unresponsive. Screen stays black and when I try to plug into my computer a window open that reads 'device cannot be recognized and should be replaced'. It has been fully charged but appears completely dead. I am desperate for help. Thanks, Jackie

First, try holding the middle button and the Menu button down simultaneously until the Apple Logo appears (wait 15-20 seconds). If nothing pops up, See if you are still under warranty (one year after purchase, unless you pay extra for apple care, which extends it to 3 years after purchase): https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do;jsessionid=E2E00E2527B4A01D8051D7C64D DF8C23
If you are under warranty, just request a new iPod, send in your old one and you're all set.

  • IPod Completely Dead - Charging does not help.

Purchased a refurbished 4th generation.  Worked for about a week, but then was plugged into a computer that ended up being turned off for the night.  In the morning the iPod would not turn on.  Has been dead ever since.  I thought maybe the computer had drained the batter, but charging does not help.  Nothing happens when we hold the two buttons down.  ITunes does not recognize the iPod.

  • 4G iPod Completely Dead

Well, I no sooner got my new 80-gig 5G video iPod than my old (not THAT old - 21 months) 40-gig 4G iPod seems to have died.
It was working fine yesterday when I was listening to some Podcasts with it. I tried to turn it on today and it is totally unresponsive. There is no screen lighting, no response to pushing any of the buttons, no starting of iTunes when connected to the computer through the dock, nothing when plugged into the AC adapter/charger - absolutely nothing - dead as a doornail.
I guess it's a good thing that I have the new one, but I was going to give this one to my wife and it died before I could. Obviously, I don't want to use a $400 iPod as a paperweight anyway.
Any ideas before I take it to the Apple Store?

After playing several podcasts today (after resetting once again) with no problems, I came home tonight and got a message that there was a new iTunes (7.0.1) available. I repaired permissions, downloaded and installed the new version, and repaired permissions again.
Then I put the 4G iPod in the dock to sync the podcasts and remove the played ones, and the syncing, which is set to happen automatically, didn't start. After a while, I got the battery icon with an exclamation point in a triangular warning sign. The battery should not have been close to dead; what does this icon mean?
I then put the Pod on my JBL ring speakers and the menus came up normally and it started to charge.
    Curiouser and curiouser.

  • Ipod completely dead and updater error

my ipod is completely gone. I had the folder and exclamation point, and then tried to turn on my ipod. an apple appeared and my ipod screen then went blank. I have tried charging it, updating it and I followed the instructions. My screen is no longer working. I plugged it into the computer where it says "this device can perform faster" (as it usually does) but itunes can't find it, it doesn't show up in my computer, and my screen won't work any more.

You probably have a hardware problem with your iPod. Try turning it on and if you hear several loud clicks (louder than the scroller when played through the iPod speaker), you have a hardware problem. If you hear the noise or can't seem to fix it, you should probably take your iPod in to your local Apple Store.

  • Ipod completely dead?

my ipod wont do anything at all.
i've read through some posts in this forum. and they at least get some sort of symbol. whether it be a sad face or a charging icon. my ipod doesnt do anything. i've tried the 3 R's or whatever in the trouble shooting page that apple has. but since my ipod wont respond, nothing works.
    this is a last resort.
    any suggestions?

Suggestions when you run into a problem of a Sad iPod icon or a folder icon with exclamation point with your iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Try to connect on a different computer i.e. a PC formatted iPod connect with a Mac computer or Mac formatted iPod with a Window base PC.
    8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
    9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
Ok, seems that you have tried almost everything, and you do not want to pay the expensive repairing cost. Do you want to leave it as a paper weight? or you are prepared to take a risk, either your iPod gets further damaged or it may recover (of course, it could be just a short term solution only).
There are successful cases reported in this forum, and I have solved some of my family/friends iPods in this drastic way (so far so good - they are still working fine), again I do agree that there are still some unsolved cases.
What you need to do is just hit the sides and back of your iPod, try to do it a few attempts, and hope it will show the menu page and allow you to do the Restore to solve this problem.
Someone claimed that my suggestion is irresponsible, of course, I can understand, but what should we do when we have no other choices, and the most important is the iPod is no longer covered by the warranty. Bear in mind the repairing cost can be as much as a new one. Even we are going to buy a new one, what should we do with our broken iPod?
Last but not least, do it at your own risk.

  • My ipod is completely dead and wont charge. What should I do?

Ipod completely dead and wont charge. I've had it plugged in for days to multiple things. never happened before. please help!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod 40 gb click wheel completely dead!

I bought an iPod (40gb click wheel) in September 2004 for the grand sum of £299 – so it isn’t even 2 years old! It has totally died. Firstly in June it refused to be identified by my Dell computer; then it corrupted a part of the software in my computer which identifies my DVD/CD drive. I had that fixed by Dell – thank goodness it didn’t do any further damage! As a result of not being recognised by my computer I was unable to add additional tunes to it. The iPod was still working but then started to make lots of noises. It then stopped working altogether and produced the folder with!. I phoned the support line in early July and was told that there are several articles on the web site which could help – I followed the recommendations and it still continued to try to re-boot itself. I was also told that getting it fixed would cost me £166 as the one year warranty had run out !!!! (Surely it should last longer than that – also I can buy something new which is more reliable for less than that!) The last stage was the final appearance of the apple logo, a black screen and now it is completely dead. It refuses to charge up with the battery and I’m absolutely livid. It doesn’t warrant being fixed. I hearby plan to return this lump of rubbish to Apple as I was on the verge of throwing it away but didn’t want to pollute the environment with whatever nasties lie within.

I've got the same problem mate. The clickwheel started to ge dead in places like around skip forward track area, (which was annoying to say the least.) But the other day it completely died, now it tries to start up showing the apple logo, then you can hear inside the hardrive spin up then a loud click then it tries this again about 5 times before showing the support website.
Ive probably had the ipod for about 2 years.
Annyoing since its a 40gb ipod and i've barely filled up 13gb. I might take it into see what the shop says but i sort of know its gonna be not worth repairing. Plus the video ipods are looking really good.

How do I get my iPod 5th generation to turn back on? It's completely dead, I've left it on the charger for more than 5 hours that didn't work. So I tried the lock button and home button trick that didn't work either, I've even plugged it into my laptop and my laptop says "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." it also says "Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, your device may not be working properly" and I reconnected my iPod and it still won't turn on PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My 4th generation Ipod touch goes shows that it is charging when it is completely dead, but as soon as it stars up it ceases to charge

My 4th generation Ipod touch shows that it is charging when it is plugged in and completely dead, but as soon as it goes past the apple screen it ceases to charge! What can i do to get it to charge?

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    and maybe
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Please Help!  My iPod Mini is completely dead :(

    Hello,
I went to use my mini yesterday and it's completely dead. It won't power up, it won't charge (via both wall outlet or my USB port).
    What should I do???

    Hey All,
I was in San Francisco last week and stopped in @ the apple store to see if they could help. I explained my situation. The store employee plugged in my ipod and to my surprise it worked. i have no idea what happened. The store employee was at a loss as well. Bottom line though, we both figured my mini needed a new battery. So, I have ordered a new battery.
I guess this proves that old ipods never die...they are just a little harder to wake up

  • PLEASE HELP- MY IPOD IS COMPLETELY DEAD

My Ipod touch is not even a year old, yesterday it went completely dead, no power what so ever. Has anyone any idea what could be wrong with it, and if this can be fixed!
    Thanks in advance

Try to force your iPod into recovery mode. Disconnect it from the computer's USB cord. Press and hold the home button while plugging it into the computer's USB cord. Continue holding the Home button while the iPod starts up. While starting up, you will see the Apple logo. When you see "Connect to iTunes" on the screen, you can release the Home button and iTunes will display the recovery mode message. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Then you can restore your iPod: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
