U310/U410 SSD setup

Considering the models with a 32GB SSD cache motherboard-soldered drive plus a removable 2,5" HDD, I'm a little unsure of the software-wise process for setting up a SSD if I were to substitute the HDD with one. From what I understand, the built-in cache-SSD manages rapid boot, rapid resume, Lenovo recovery and acts as a drive that stores parts of or entire pieces of files that are most recently being accessed on the HDD, or it just stores the Windows system files, I don't know. Anyways, if someone could with detail explain me a way to make sure all this functionality is transferred to a single SSD that is to replace the HDD? I imagine I would have to clone the SSD-cachedrive onto the new SSD (where I'd create a 32GB partition). Optimally I would want to in some way disable the 32GB SSD and lay all its task over to the new SSD because it's undoubtedly a lot faster (talking about a OCZ Vertex 4 128 GB that does approx. 90k IOPS when reading 4k files). If someone comes with a dissassembly-guide, you've entirely missed my point.

I have just done a SSD upgrade to my MBP 2010 i7.
As for the SSD i went with the OWC 240GB, it took me ages to decided on what to get but im glad i got it, its just great.
My set up with the SSD and HDD took some thought. My SSD sits in my optibay and the HDD says where it is for a few good reasons.
The MBP 2010 only has SATA II so it makes no diffrence in speed where you put your SSD.
Moving the HDD could cause you problems with the motion detection and spin down, seeing it makes no diffrence where the SSD goes i thought i would keep the HDD where it was designed to be.
I have the full OSX, applications and some documents on the SSD, i have left the SSD the location of my "Users location" as this means i can un-mount the HDD when i like (saves a little power). I have short cuts for the folers i have on the HDD (music, movies and photos) and have set up itunes and apearure to read from the HDD.
I have to say i reinstalled a few times to get it just right and it work really well,

  • U410 SSD Initialization

    Hi.
I've always had problems with my U410, rapidstart never worked, sleep issues, slow booting etc. Over several months I managed to tweak things to a workable state - the laptop goes to sleep properly, rapidstart was uninstalled. Booting is still slow (up to 20 minutes).
Anyhow, I had stopped paying attention to it all by simply rebooting as little as possible.
However, probably with the update to win 8.1 something strange happened: suddenly the SSD came to life! My SSD had never shown up anywhere on the device, not in DISKPART, not in Device manager, nowhere. So imagine my surprise when, while trying to repair a broken SD card, I'm suddenly prompted to "initialize" a 24GB SSD that has apparently always been there, but never worked.
So my disk manager now looks like this:
Here's the problem though: it won't initialize, and without initialization I can't create a hibernation partition, without which I can't get rapidstart to work, without which my slow-booting problems will continue to exist.
When choosing to initialize, I have to select the disk, choose between MBR and GPT and click on ok. Regardless of my choice, I get this error:
So yeah, any help would be appreciated. I actually have some hope that I now finally may be able to fix this booting issue, and hope is something I lost a long time ago when it came to all the trouble my U410 gave me.
    Thanks,
    Lemo

    Thanks LenBlazer !
as confirmed that OP's installation of ExpressCache, I got no configuration windows after NEXT, only get this and request for restart, and then still got the error mentioned above.
I think most probably this related to RAID setting in BIOS? I have exactly same partition table as OP.
the same as my posted question:
(Re)activate Intel Rapid start technolgy (RST) & RAID @U310
@Lemodile, I guess you have also within BIOS set to ACHI, right?

  • Lightroom user - Multiple SSD setup & SATA III availability - suggestions?

Ok, this is a convoluted question (in my mind), but I'm going to ask it anyway. Also, I realize that none of this is probably going to make a ton of difference, but every little bit helps.
    This is my current setup:
-120gb Corsair Force GT - Windows 7, Lightroom 5 and CS6 (among a few other programs)
-240gb Corsair Force GS - Lightroom catalog and working files
-7200rpm Seagate HDD - Final copy jpg storage
    -Other specs: i7 2600k, 24gb RAM, GTX 560
The SSD with Windows & Adobe software usually runs pretty close to 20gb free, so I'd like to get a larger & faster SSD to clone to. I'm thinking of getting a Samsung 840 Pro 256gb.
So, assuming I keep the exported files on the HDD, I'd have the 3 SSDs (all fast, but the Samsung would be the fastest) at my disposal. Here are my questions regarding the SSDs:
    1) Would it be advantageous to split up the Lightroom catalog and the working files onto two separate SSDs? Or would you suggest keeping them together?
    2) Should I use the Samsung 840 Pro for the OS & programs? Or would a different use help to maximize overall performance?
A second part to this scenario - my motherboard only has 2 internal SATA III connections (the rest are SATA II obviously). If I don't pursue a new mobo, which I'm not going to at this time, which of the two SSDs (and associated purposes) would you put on the SATA III connections?
    Thanks!

Are you experiencing performance issues with your current LR System and in what areas (Develop module, Export, etc.)?
Your current 3.4GHz  i7 2600k quad core processor should be provide good LR performance. There is also no guarantee that moving to a higher-performance  4 , 6, or 8 core processor will improve things inside LR. We've actually had cases in the LR forum where performance is worse with certain high-performance processors (6 and 8 core).
Multiple SSDs don't add much LR performance improvement on a properly functioning system. Running all your SSDs on SATA III versus SATA II ports is unlikely to produce any "measurable" LR performance improvement since you're already at the point of diminishing returns.

  • Lenovo U310 Cache SSD is not user formattable!

Hi, I recently had to reformat the Lenovo U310 Hard drives. I used One Key Recovery to reinstall the operating system.
When I tried to reenable the SSD caching feature using the Intel Rapid Start Technology tool, the tool didn't indicate that the hard drive was being accellerated again.
When I went into the BIOS to check for problems under the Intel Rapid Start Technology section I see "iRST Status Invalid".
It seems like Lenovo has decieded not to implement Intels technology to spec, and to do its own proprietary implementation. The problem is, there is no way for the user to repartition the SSD! So you have to pay lenovo 90 dollars to buy the factory image...
This is an outrage to me, when I see features advertised like using the SSD to accellerate the main hard drive I assume this is something that can easily be enabled by the user.
I really hope Lenovo provides a free way of setting up the SSD, otherwise I will never buy Lenovo again. I advise anyone to avoid purchasing this Laptop unless you are comfortable paying 90 dollars just to reset your machine to its advertised features...
If anyone can help me with this problem it is greatly appreciated.

You really have to pay $90 for the factory image?  So are you saying... I can't do this unless I send it in?

  • U410 SSD Upgrade Question

Hello, I want to upgrade my mSATA 30gb for a mSATA 120gb. Can I place the KingstonSSDNow mS200 SMS200S3/120G, 120 GB SSD, Solid State Drive in my Lenovo U410 or do I have restrictions on my laptop for the SSD?

    Hi DavidszM,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
The only limitation in this upgrade is the physical size which is 9.55mm.
You current SSD is used as Cache drive which will speed up the Read/write
    But
Switching to a higher 120GB will give you the advantage as you can make it as your Primary drive rather than a cache drive.
    You can check this Thread,
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/miniPC-ssd-for-u410/td-p/993405
    Hope this helps

    Hi telstra,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
U410 Support mSATA SSD so You'll need to open up the Base cover to gain access of the card
Here is a Youtube video on how to open it up
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sGwQBiGw-Y
at 2.16 you'll find the SSD disassembly.
For Transferring Windows to the SSD
You can try Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home (free trial) as other users have tested it on their Lenovo unit (see this thread).
Change the Boot order so your unit will boot from the SSD
    Hope this

  • XPS 2720 Question - best ssd setup for performance

    Hi Guys
the 32gb msata on the motherboard that comes with the AIO, is this any good, want to upgrade ssd, do I keep msata but get larger or do I get rid of this and the 1tb sata 7200 and buy samsung 850 evo/pro and will this give me the best all round performance, interested what you think and what you would buy
next thing I will need is a dummies guide how to do this and i am not that technically minded,
1 important thing is I dont have recover disks and my backup/recovery does not work as it says I have corrupted environment, and dell does not detect my machine and when i input my service tag number it does not recognise that either.
    what is going on,lol
    regs
    paul

The first thing you need is Windows 8.1 installation media, see here:
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-8-1-retail-and-oem-iso/
Get a 250-500 GB mSATA and get rid of the 32 GB SSD cache drive. I prefer Crucial in particular the MX200 but Samsung are good also:
    http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/xps-one-2720
To install follow the instructions in the owner's manual to remove the mSATA mini-card:
    http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_xps_desktop/xps-27-2720-aio_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
Change the SATA operation to AHCI and wipe the HDD using DISKPART → CLEAN ALL:
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/ensure-you-have-the-correct-sata-configuration-in-the-bios-setup-for-your-configuration/sata-operation/
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/cleaning-up-a-drive-format-vs-secure-wipe-ssd-and-hdd/
Install Windows using a local account without a password (so your new factory image doesn't have your Microsoft Account associated with it):
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/a-clean-install-of-windows/a-clean-install-of-windows-8-1/windows-8-1-installation/
After installation of Windows you will need to install the system drivers (in the correct order):
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/downloading-drivers-checking-hardware-ids-and-downloading-and-installing-dell-system-drivers-in-the-correct-order/driver-installation/
Installation of Dell Backup and Recovery will make a new recovery partition from the clean install.
You may then want to switch to a Microsoft Account.
You will then want to initialize the HDD and migrate the user directories to it:
    http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/a-clean-install-of-windows/a-clean-install-of-windows-8-1/solid-state-drive-and-hard-drive-configuration/

  • SSD setup suggestions (looking for)

Hi, I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" i5. I was thinking about switching to an SSD / HDD setup, using the Optibay to replace the Superdrive.
My dad recently bought a Macbook Air, and it boots in like 7 seconds, it's incredible. Will I have the same performances as him with a SSD/HDD setup?
Second question? Is it better to put the SSD in the original hard drive place or in the SuperDrive place? What are the advantages/disadvantages of the two different configurations (for instance, since II can now hear my drive spinning more than before, can it be put to stop in the Optibay when it's not needed?)?
These are the two SSD I find more appealing, what do you think about them?
    OCZ Vertex 2 120GB
    Patriot Inferno 120GB
Also, some reported that having the two drives slows boot for some reason compared to an SSD only setup, why is that?
Thank you in advance and sorry for the many questions.

  • Ideapad U410 SSD problem

My 18 month old (out of Lenovo warranty) Ideapad had what I was sure was an SSD hardware failure.  Would not boot or run from recovery disk - i/o errors.  I took it to a local computer repair shop for an estimate on repairs for American Express (extended warranty).  They tell me there is no SSD drive in this computer - only a standard hard disk which has failed.   All of the data I have found on this model says that it includes a 32 GB SSD.  I purchased the computer directly from Lenovo (new).  Is the repair shop missing something?  Or does this model not include an SSD?   Thanks.

    Hello and welcome,
What's the MT-M (machine type - model) of your laptop.  Something like 4376-29U as an example.
Some U410 models came with a hard drive and a 32GB mSATA SSD which is used as a cache for the hard drive.  The 32GB SSD is too small to be a stand-alone OS drive.
Your particular model may have a hard drive only, or hard drive + SSD.  The lipwbook lists some of the MT-Ms and their configuration.  Yours may be in it.

  • Ssd setup with hard drives.

I'm going to add an ssd for the first time to my computer. I'm going to use it as a program drive, what would be the best setup, two ssds in raid 0, or one larger one. Also, which would be better, two 2 tb drives in raid 0 or having them just seperate. I'm going to use them as data drives.

Unless you have multiple RAID controllers, you likely can't get both of those.  Lay out your hardware configuration in your next post with your motherboard make and model and the capabilities of your case. Then we can talk more.

Are you sure that you have a ssd in your laptop? You could as well try to set up a new cache disk from rapid drive if you have a ssd installed. Ssd is not installed in every u410. It is sub modal specific.

Try doing an OKR backup. Click OneKey Recovery icon and select backup. Specify an external drive (do not use the failing hdd). Make at least two backups just in case the first one is defective. Call tech support in preparation for a replacement job.

  • SSD setup for Macbook Pro 2011....confused!

    Hi guys
I have just got a Macbook Pro from 2011. (after being a lifelong pc user).
I want to upgrade the hard drives. Would it be better to get a 256 SSD for OS and programs as the main drive, and a larger SSD or HDD as a second drive in place of the cd drive. Or to get one of these new 1tb SSD's and put everything on it. As its SSD would it make a difference in performance to have one big one for everything?
Also, Im struggling with choosing a brand. I seem to be stuck between Samsung and Crucial, mainly the Samsung 840 EVO 1tb vs the Crucial m550 1TB. I have read some things saying that there are problems with the 840 evo on macbooks from 2011, but have read in other places that the 840 evo is better than the crucial.....so confusing!!
If anyone can shed some light on this I will be very grateful!!
    Alex

    robodelfy,
I've been using Crucial SSDs since I purchased my last MacBook Pro in 2012. I currently have a M500 960GB Crucial SSD in my machine and three Crucial SSDs in a Windows machine. Never had a problem with it.
Although the Samsung 850 Pro is the fastest drive available to consumers, your computer won't be able to take advantage of all that bandwidth. If I were you, I would look at the Crucial M550 1024GB SSD or the Samsung 840 EVO 1024GB SSD. There were some problems with the earlier releases of the EVO drive but I believe that they have been fixed now.
    Good luck,
