U310 Win 8.1 weird shutdown/booting

Hi all,
I'm having some Problems with my U310 Ultrabook and hoping to find some help and see if others share some of these issues:
My system:
U310
Intel I3 - 3217U 1.8G
4G Ram
500G HDD 24G SSD
Manuf. Date: 2012/09/23
Initially, the system suffered from very poor WiFi performance, as experienced by many others:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/My-new-u310-gives-really-low-speeds-on-wifi...
After sending the machine to customer support, the WiFi quality is improved greatly (but still not perfect).
Since the support guys reinstalled Win8, I had to do the update to 8.1 again, and since then the system behaves weirdly:
-Booting takes very long, and booting time greatly varies
-Instead of shutting down, the system stays in a state with Power LED on and screen backlight on, and then RESTARTS in some 9 out of 10 attempts. Very rarely the system actually shuts down, but takes very long to do so.
Things I've tried to fix this (among others):
-Reinstall Win8 -> Problem gone -> update 8.1 -> Problem back
-booting in safe mode -> no change
-reinstall intel rapid start drivers as suggested here:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/U310-UEFI-amp-others-problems/td-p/1216796
-> does not work
-run sfc /scannow in command prompt:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/U310-Novo-key-does-not-work/td-p/1254815
-> does not work
If anyone of you is experiencing similar problems, or is even having ideas how to fix this, i'd be very grateful to read about it!
Big Thanks.
Greetings from Germany

Hi everyone,
a little update/bumping:
Lenovo Support asked me to do the OneKey Recovery -> Afterwards I had to reinstall 8.1, shutting down now works, booting still takes too long for a SSD system, but OK.
Only thing left: System ALWAYS crashes when closing the lid - sometimes right away, sometimes shortly after logging in again...
Just because it sounds somewhat similar, I already tried uninstalling the bluetooth driver
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Z500-boot-issue-after-updating-to-Windows-8...
but did not change anything.
Any help is appreciated!

  • Win 7 sys hard shutdown, lost calendar & contact data in Palm OS 6.2.2

Win 7 sys had a hard shutdown and upon restart my Palm OS Access 6.2.2 that I use exclusively on the desktop had lost all of the contacts and calendar data. The user name was still intact but no data. Any ideas on how to recover the data? I would like to identify and locate the data files associated with contacts and calendar but I'm not sure of the names or extensions. I've been using Palm desktop for over ten years and never had any data loss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello, and Welcome to the HP Support Community!
You have discovered a bug in Palm Desktop 6.2.2 the hard way.  :-(
If your computer gets shut down without closing the program, it can lose data.
Try the method discussed in this recent thread, but substitute the two module names you are missing for "MemoPad".
Be sure to backup your data before doing digital surgery!

  • L430 WIN 8 & 8.1 shutdown issue

I've just updated from WIN 7 to WIN 8 and then 8.1. My problem is that when I want to shut down L430, power button still lights green and WIFI indicator also is on. This means that my Laptop isn't total shut down, so I've got to hold power button down to kill power.
I've updated BIOS and all packages from Lenovo, still no luck with total power off.
Fast boot is off and Hybrid shutdown is also off.

Thanks a lot Michael - I will try this with our customer today and let you know how it goes.
The user account is in the same domain - but have read the GC may contain other properties (cross domain groups etc) which the account may be associated with.
btw - Will the CUCIMOC LDAP port in the admin .bat file / registry  need to be changed also?
    thanks again

  • Touch 2.0 & Win XP wireless & weird behavior HELP

    Hello
So, I bought into all the Apple ads (& even bought Apple stock) and have signed on to the phenomenon, but I am not happy.
    Apple! Listen up:
I have a new 32Gig Touch installed on a FRESH copy of Win XP (the most stable OS I have ever used, having built many systems). iPod software 1.4.XX worked seamlessly. However, since "upgrading" to 2.0 to the tune of $10 it has been VERY frustrating:
    1. I cannot connect wirelessly, as others have reported. I have tried putting a "$" in front of my WEP key to no avail. PRIOR TO 2.0, I was able to connect effortlessly, so this is clearly a 2.0 problem and Apple's failure to troubleshoot this thoroughly.
    2. ALSO: when the iPod Touch is communicating wirelessly (even though it doesn't connect to the internet) my PC slows to a crawl. Specifically, my mouse movement is fragmented and slow & the PC is essentially useless. I also get some sort of registry error when booting up.
    3. When connected via USB and turned on (syncing) I get humming noises from the PC. Really strange.
Keep in mind this is a fresh XP install with little to no apps running. When I shut the Touch off, my PC performance increases to normal (even if the Touch is not connected).
As Apple expands its base across platforms as part of it corporate strategy, it must continue to deliver the exceptional ease of use and performance that has defined its existence. Alas, it seems that Apple has stumbled on this 2.0 release. My new MacBook arrives Tuesday. If I cannot resolve these issues, then I may just keep the MacBook sealed and return it and stick to the PC world, where I at least know how to troubleshoot these types of things.
I would appreciate ANY suggestions from other users out there. I searched the forums and tried what I could before posting.
Thanks for your help, Borderline Apple Convert

    On follow up:
It seems the slow mouse and performance is related to the wireless on the Touch. Turning it off seems to resolve the problem. Furthermore, using a wired USB mouse rather than a wireless one also seems to fix the issue. I also turned off the wireless on the Touch.
As for the wireless connection, it is definitely connected. It seems to work for a second then drops. For instance, I was able to add 1 city to the weather but then it timed out when adding the second. One web page will come up and then the next one will stall.
I think I might go back to 1.1.4 or 5 and see if I can get my wireless performance back.
    Any other suggestions appreciated. Thx.

  • Weird shutdown

    Hi,
I have had my macbook a bit more than 2 months, I have never encountered any "random shutdown". I don't use it intensively, mostly for school work and internet surfing. So, about 10 minutes ago, I go to turn on my macbook. It goes on and Im trying to connect to the internet, and all of a sudden, i just shuts down with a little clicking noise. I try to power on again, but does not get to my background before it shuts off again (with click noise again). I try again, makes turning on noise, no blue screen, and shuts down again. I try for the 4th time, and now it is working. Im using it to type right now. WHta the heck was that??? please help, Thanks

If it is the RSD Problem (Random Shutdown) then you will most likley have to send it in for repairs

  • Can't install itunes on win 7 64bit, weird error! please help

    Hey
When trying to upgrade itunes, i uninstalled the old version and tried install the new.
    I get this error:
    Any ideas why?
    Thanks
    Eyal

Good lord ... a bit of an alphanumeric soup there ...
It's not clear initially which is the fundamental error here. But based on the fact that the 8007371b can be fixed by the System Update Readiness Tool, we might try a manual install of that first. There's information on how to do that in the *Information for Advanced Users* section of the following document.
[Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821]
Installing the tool will run the tool.
After the installation of the tool, restart the PC. Then go back to Windows Update, and attempt to stock up again on Windows Updates. Do they download and install correctly? If so, because you might be a reasonable way behind on updates, keep going back to Windows update until it stops offering you new updates.
Once you're stocked up again, restart the PC again, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I have a 1.5yr old Ideapad U310, Win 7 64 bit with inbuilt webcam. The camera is not working and cant be swiched on.
Neither thru YouCam software or through Skype. Was weoring perfectly a month ago.

There is a youCam software which doesnt work as says switch on camera. Fn F9  done the camera is still not ON but icon says on. Reinstalled the Youcam software twice, but issue remains "Camera to be switched on".
    Please advise.

    hi vtrakroo,
The Lexmark X422 that you're seing is likely the scanner from your Lexmark printer (the built-in camera should usually be listed as Lenovo Easy Camera or similar)
      - Sample image
    Things that you can try:
    1. Boot into the BIOS by pressing F2 (or Fn+F2). In the BIOS, press F9 (or Fn+F9) to load setup defaults then press F10 (or Fn+F10) to save and exit.
        - this procedure will refresh all hardware components in the system
    2. Inside Windows, check if you have an Unknown Device in the Other Devices section. If you have this, follow this guide on how to identify the device (or post the Hardware ID here)
        - Sample image
    3. Reinstall the camera driver
       - Camera Driver (Bison, Chicony, Awazu) for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit)
Let me know how it goes.

  • Unreadable fonts in Wine

Since I got the new 0.9.11, Wine has acting weird. When I tried to run IE it would freeze after some minuts. I tried to fix that by reinstalling sidenet-config and deleting .wine. But now, my fonts are all screwed up!
Ass You can see my fonts are all weird. And as you hopefully can see, root have the same problem.

there is nothing to fix, as i said before that isn't a problem. there are many others manifacturers which is doing the same. it is not a some kind of instability or similar. it is a nature way to go.

  • Windows 8.1 - Sysprep, CopyProfile and Default Applications

    Hello,
I'm absolutely at the end of my rope with this one.
My organization wants to deploy Windows 8.1 Professional to a small but not insignificant number of workstations. Due to a host of reasons beyond my control, higher ups have decided UAC needs to be off. I've got 8.1 Pro x64 installed on a Hyper-V VM, and
I'm in audit mode working on creating an image.
I remove all of the metro apps (do not work with UAC off), but the Photos app remains. Fine. So while in Audit Mode, I set the default image viewer to Windows Picture Viewer. I then customize the start screen, finish configurations and sysprep the computer
    with the sysprep file below.
Once the process completes, the sysprep is successful and the machine reboots.
Much to my dismay, it seems as though the CopyProfile doesn't work. The start screen reverts back to default with just 3 items (Metro IE, Explorer and Desktop) and that freaking stupid annoying unruly Photos app is the default picture viewer again.
Please help! I've spent 3 weeks on technet and Google and just can't find anything.
    Thank you!

After changing my search approach, I found a bit of a work around. Even though the CopyProfile doesn't seem to be working, I was able to eliminate the biggest problems by deleting the below registry keys, which removes Photos as the default App for pictures.
    reg delete HKCR\Microsoft.PhotoManager.imagetype /f
    reg delete HKCR\Microsoft.PhotoManager.panotype /f
    reg delete HKCR\Microsoft.PhotoManager.videotype /f
That did it. Sure enough, all major picture filetypes now default to Picture Viewer.
As for the metro IE icon that's created in the start screen for all new users, I created this batch file:
    :: Create Reg Entries
    reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /f
    reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v "WIN-81FIX" /t REG_SZ /d "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat" /f
    start /wait reg load HKU\temphive "C:\Users\default\ntuser.dat"
    reg add HKU\temphive\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /f
    reg add HKU\temphive\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v "WIN-81FIX" /t REG_SZ /d "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat" /f
    start /wait reg unload hku\temphive
    :: Create Batch File
    Echo IF EXIST "%userprofile%\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer.lnk" ( > "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat"
    Echo del /q /f "%userprofile%\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer.lnk" ) >> "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat"
    Echo reg delete HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v WIN-81FIX /f >> "C:\Windows\deploy\WIN-81FIX.bat"
    Echo shutdown -r -t 0 -f >> "C:\Windows\deploy\TDS-81FIX.bat"
This creates a batch file for each user that deletes the metro IE shortcut in that users profile, then restarts the computer.
Bit of a flimsy work around, but does the trick.

  • Z68A-GD65 (G3) issues: monitor stays on, mouse problems

    Hi,
First I need to mention that I already updated BIOS to latest version (23.1).
The BIOS once froze when I tried to exit without saving changes, but that was before I updated it.
    The issues are following:
    1. Randomly (about 50%-50%), upon shutdown the monitor will not turn off. I am running the integrated graphics of the i5-2500K CPU, DVI output. The system is shut down and not in some sleep mode, also I tried to flip the PSU switch and the effect persists (the monitor does not turn off even then). It keeps displaying a perfectly black image, and the OSD menu does not respond (cannot be brought up). The monitor is connected to an Aten DVI KVM switch, which I also reset to eliminate it as the sole issue. I've had many machines and different OSes (Windows, Linux), but never have I seen this before. It seems the system somehow does not shutdown the monitor properly.
    2. Upon shutdown, the mouse LED stays on. I'm using the same OS (Windows XP Pro 32-bit) as with the previous motherboard (Asus), and always the mouse properly turned off, so it doesn't seem to be an OS issue. Funny thing is, I also have one USB cable with a LED. This cable never turned its LED off on the Asus board, while it does turn it off on the MSI. This is another indication of weird shutdown, as mouse does not receive the shutdown signal. Even if power is cut, the KVM will keep powering it. This just happens to be the first motherboard, on which my Windows XP fails to turn it off upon shutdown.
    3. After the BIOS upgrade, the mouse does not work anymore within BIOS. The cursor is confined to one vertical line on the left side, and the motion is reversed (I move the mouse down and the cursor moves up). The mouse is Cooler Master Spawn. The funny thing is, that the BIOS update mentions improving compatibility with gaming mice, and the mouse was working perfectly before this update.
Note that this mouse-in-BIOS issue is minor, I mostly care about the first two.
To resolve the issues, I've tried toggling various BIOS settings like EuP 2013, spread spectrum, legacy USB support, etc. All to no avail.
    Please help?

    Quote
Have you connected the mouse directly to the USB ports of the board itself?
We need to get the KVM thing out of the equation completely.
Not yet. If the issue won't return with the other port, KVM will obviously be at fault. Not using the KVM is not an option to begin with, that's why I'm still testing through normal usage with the KVM. Either way, it's impossible to forcibly prove that something works since the issue not reappearing may only be a coincidence, no matter how many times you try. You can only prove it doesn't work when the issue appears, hence this approach. That is, I'm tracking down the issue from the nonworking side. Don't worry, if it reappears I will try direct connection. If it doesn't reappear on another port, I'd only be destroying my hardware with needless restarts since the issue could not reappear anyway.
Please allow me a week (max) for this, I'll report back. If it doesn't reappear in a week, it had to be KVM port/cable.
    Quote
That is a different concept. A "safe disconnect" will basically log-out the respective drive (unmount it) and force all pending read/write/caching tasks to be completed.  However, this does not concern the functionality of the USB Ports.  They will still supply power, which means the connected device as such will remain powered.  It is just "logged out" of the operating system.
I was actually talking about what happens after unmounting. The HDD itself will stop spinning. This has nothing to do with flushing cache and unmounting. The system sends some kind of shutdown signal to the device. This was also identified as an issue on Windows 7, where by default windows did not shutdown external devices by default, when you "safely disconnect" them. Supposedly it was because of phones, which needed to keep charging and not shutdown even when you "safely disconnect" them. But people now complained they are afraid to pull the cable on the still-spinning harddrives. Windows XP does stop them by default, and on Windows 7 they offered a solution through a registry tweak that returns the XP behaviour.
So, this seems to be a special command. I'm guessing this is sent to all USB devices upon system shutdown, that this command is universal. At least, it was sent with the Asus board and now it isn't anymore.
If I connect the mouse directly it will most likely turn off upon shutdown. The cable LED already indicated that the board cuts power. That doesn't mean that it works correctly, since the USB device shutdown command, which is obviously needed with KVM switches, is still not sent for some reason. I hope nobody comes forward and presents this as a "feature"
I'll try to search in this direction, but I don't know that much about hardware/driver/OS chain, where the problem seems to originate from.
    Cheers!

  • Why is it still so hard to get into safe mode?

One of the worst features in Windows 8 is the many, many steps it takes to boot into safe mode... and it doesn't always get you there. And sadly, Microsoft has brought that into the Windows 10 preview.
Let's be real for a second. Safe mode is a valuable tool for it techs, and can be helpful to the home user. Getting there is a friggin' nightmare in Windows 8, and it's no easier in windows 10. The UEFI bios and boot manager doesn't help either.
Bring back a functioning F8 key, will ya?
On another note, why the hell can't you boot from a linux-based cd and find the windows 8/10 based OS. Microsoft's virus removal tools are useless if you can't boot into Windows... and "refreshing" the drive also ONLY works if you can load the
Operating system.Pulling the hard-drive to scan it for virus removal should not be necessary, but it seems to be with Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Ran across this article after putting the 10 Tech Preview on my computer last week. Started off with build 9741 and now have 9879 and I just want to totally agree with the poster that Microsoft seems to have forgotten what safe mode is used for, mostly troubleshooting
when something goes wrong and keeps our computers from booting. I stayed away from both 8 and 8.1 and have stayed with 7. So far the tech preview looks OK, and I like the return of the start menu as well as many other familiar Win 7 features and controls.
But, even with 7, I've had endless hours wasted trying to fix the counterintuitive way that Microsoft seems to think (or not think) regarding these sort of issues. I'll gladly give up a couple (or even 30) seconds to have the option to boot into safe mode.
I've fought with Microsoft over and over again about the way they keep trying to automate troubleshooting even when there are very simple manual fixes. Sometimes it seems like they want to just keep users from having the control we want over how our system
works. And it this case it's just plain stupid that you can't choose to boot directly to safe mode by default from a preloading boot menu. Win 7 had terrible problems with "Bootmgr is missing" after even the simplest of issues such as adding files
to a USB or just a bad defrag or user mistake. I spent hours pulling my hair out after such issues and eventually got myself into a hole because of the way Microsoft looked at the issue. 99% of the time I could have fixed my issue by being able to do a repair
install from startup and it never made sense that you could only do an in place or "upgrade" install as they started calling it, If you can already boot into Windows. Lots of good that does when you can't get Windows to boot in the first place. And
so far the Startup repair in Tech preview is just as useless as in Win 7. Except now it's even harder to get to. I played with it a bit to test it and just a simple thing like moving the bootmgr one file down in the directory or just adding 1 small file out
of place was enough to make tech preview unbootable as well when using the older MBR setups. The new startup repair hasn't fixed it once. I don't know what the refresh really does as it doesnt work either. Gives a vague error with no link to a log and no other
information provided , so dont know where to troubleshoot that one.  Win 7 's startup repair almost never worked for me until I learned the trick to run it at least 3 times with reboots and running SFC /offbootdir /offwindir in the middle. All of those
problems could have been fixed by simply allowing us to boot from the install media to re-install without loosing data. I'm glad to see that at least for now you can do a repair install from boot in the current version of 10 Tech Prev. Please keep that for
the later rollout, Microsoft. And stop messing with Safemode, please! I just made the edits to bcdedit to enable the legacy boot so I hope it works. I know it's still early but so far the Tech Preview has been a real challenge. I ran into issues on Win 7 with
missing Vredist C++ files coming up missing after trying to get DirectX 10 to work. There is a stupid loophole there that Direct X will make you delete allx86 and x64 C++ runtimes that it doesn't like, in this case it wouldnt install with the
2005 SP1 C++ redists. After I deleted them to install the Direct X I ran into a whole hell of an issue with corrupted files due to missing components from the  2005 redistribs that Win 7 would basically shutdown and slowly corrupt everything if
any component of that package was missing and then would not allow you to reinstall them if your system was higher than XP yet would not fix corruptions until they were installed. I'm still trying to side fix my Win 7 installs on my other disks as I consitently
cant get certain 2005 C++ redistribs to install. Now having big problems with massive corruptions in Tech Prev, to the point that it becomes totally non responsive and icons and folders almost totally go away in a very short period of time. DISM was
pretty limited in Win 7 so I'm trying to get onto that but the commands are kind of confusing me and it doesn't work consistently and I thing the online store components are not being made available for repair as I get a lot of "failed to obtain image
from provider" messages and it's giving me a lot of problems when I try to mount my iso as a wim file. Hate to say it but I've been working with 10 Tech preview on 2 computers (test out homegroup) and I've installed and reinstalled at least 5 times on
each computer but within 30 minutes of a good install its corrupted again and Dism will stop working all together. Anyway, wish they'd stop messing with our tools. Bring back safemode by default guys.

  • Turn a computer on?

Win8, HP Pavillion Slimline s5-1400t. Win8 will shut down the computer using "shut down", however, later when I want to turn the computer on, it will not come on using the power button, which is what all the literature says to do. HP tech support has not been able to help me. The ONLY way you can start this computer after it has been shut down, is to unplug the power cord, plug it back in and THEN push the power button. All power schemes have "sleep" disabled. Help!

If it's not shutting down with the SHIFT key method and won't turn on after using the hybrid shutdown (Win 8's default shutdown mode), there is something strange happening.
What happens if you try to shutdown by just pushing the power button on the computer once (same as you would to turn it on), without holding it down for 5 seconds? That should also work to shut off the computer with Win 8 hybrid shutdown.
Here is an HP Support document with info on how to use your BIOS: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03383166&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5297229
The IE10 issue could be related to how Windows 8 uses Flash in the new "touch" browser (the default browser from the Start screen). If you switch to your Desktop and open IE from there, your site may work. Windows 8 can take a little time to get used to on some things.

  • Screen going crazy and locking up. Please help!

Every once in a while (maybe every other day) my screen with just out of nowhere freak out, get cut in half, weird lines through everything, and completely freeze...out of the blue.
I have a cincema display and this used to happen sometimes when it was plugged in, but it happened today when the macbook pro wasn't plugged into anything. It also did a weird shutdown/sleep thing randomly today too.
Any ideas? Nothing else happens. I have to hold down the power button and reset the computer.
It doesn't appear there are any other issues.

That is a clear symptom of a damaged graphics chip. If your Macbook is still under warranty, now would be the time to bring it in to the Apple store and have them look at it.

  • A little problem.. Please HELP

    Hey Community,
So here is the situation, I keep getting this weird shutdown glitch that happens while I am using my MacBook Pro. An apple employee told me I might have to back up everything so they wipe my computer clean to help solve the problem. I am completely fine with that because all I have is music, some pictures, and some documents and I can redownload all the apps I purchased from the app store. The problem is my microsoft office I purcahsed seperately. How can I back up microsoft office if the cd and code I used can only be used once. It gets better, I threw away the CD and code because I thought it was useless. What can I do to get Microsoft back on my "new" MacBook without having to pay 150$ all over again? Is it possible?
    Thanks,
    Alex
