U400 Trackpad Problem -- Warranty

I first purchased my U400 over the phone with Lenovo in May of last year. When I recieved it, there was a hairline separation in the top and bottom cover, along with an ever so slight indentation. I called support, and the person on the line told me that I would have to send it back if I wanted it repaired, but if I had no problems, and I need the computer, I could hold on to it until it becomes a problem.
Later on I upgraded to Windows 8, which was a nightmare because of driver issues (which at the time Lenovo stated it was fine to upgrade). The graphics driver wouldn't work, and I had to downgrade. Shortly after the downgrade I had problems with my battery, in which there would be a popup that said "your battery has reached 40% of it's original capacity" only 4 months into owning it. I called Lenovo, and we reimaged the computer again, to no avail.  They said I would have to send it in when I could.
I waited a month to send it in, when I opened my computer one day to find that the trackpad was unresponsive. At this point I called lenovo and set up a return to warranty. After about a week without the computer, I recieved an email stating that all my problems are caused by a hairline separation in the top cover and the bottom cover, and a it's not covered under the warranty. This problem is Lenovo's problem, I recieved the computer like that, and was told I could send it back when I had time.
Now they are holding my laptop ransom for the 187 dollars, that I feel has nothing to do with the real problem, as I used the computer for 7 months with the separation and small dent which was there when I first bought the PC. I'm tired of dealing with Lenovo over this.
Please help me.

I paid about $650 for it. I spoke a to rep about it after I upgraded to Windows 8 as well, and he said that I could send it back whenever to get the issues fixed. I just don't think it's fair that I'm told one thing, and they do another. It doesn't seem to me like a reputale business...
I just want it fixed, I'm tired of having problem after problem. I personally love this computer, and on a side note, it doesn't cost $187 to fix whatever the blemish is.

  • White Macbook (Mid 2006) Trackpad problem

I have a white Macbook from Mid 2006 and it has been functioning fine all these years. However just yesterday, it developed a trackpad problem.
I am still able to move the cursor but nothing happens when I click the trackpad button.
I then bought an external mouse. However the problem did not go away entirely. The external mouse would work just fine (I would be able to click with it) if I did not touch the trackpad. However on the few occasions where I accidentally touched the trackpad, the external mouse would suddenly suffer the same fate as the trackpad, i.e. I was still able to move the cursor but I could not click with the external mouse.
I managed to alleviate the problem by checking the "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" option in my System Preferences, thereby preventing any accidental touches of the trackpad from affecting the external mouse. However I hope to get to the root of this sudden and mysterious problem, rather than sweeping it under a "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" option.
I have tried resetting the PRAM and it did not solve the problem.

Might want to check: Apple->System Preferences->Universal Access , click on the Mouse & Trackpad Tab, then Make sure "Mouse Keys" are off , make sure "press the option key five times .. etc" is unchecked, make "ignore trackpad when mouse keys is on" is unchecked. Check That 1st, because it does sound like a preference problem .. If I think of another one I'll ring in ... Good Luck

  • Trackpad problem on macbook pro

I have been having trackpad problems on my macbook pro (bought in 2010) for the past couple of days. Not only does it move erratically by itself, but the left click does not respond as it should. Whenever I use the left click, it works as a right click, and I have made no changes in the trackpad options. I have done a battery check through the shift and battery click option, and the response for battery came normal. I have also done a PRAM/NVRAM reset, but the problem still persists. Do I need to replace my battery? Please leave any suggestions. Thanks

I would take it in for diagnosis. It would be a guess to suggest a specific problem.

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and in that case the unit must be serviced or replaced.
    3. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    4. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    5. Reset the System Management Controller.
    6. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    7. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • Magic Trackpad Problems in Lion

Since loading Lion on to my 2011 MBP 13" I have a number of gesture issues on my Magic Trackpad. It seems to have a will of its own and refuses to follow the trackpad on my laptops 'lead', with particular reference to Safari, full screen apps and moving back and forwards. I've played with all the trackpad settings in system pref and still nowhere. Any thoughts chaps? Many thanks in advance.

Just wanted to add my experiences to the mix. I've had the magic trackpad (bluetooth) problems, too. Mostly, I've seen behavior where certain gestures do things they're not supposed to (and that are incredibly discruptive), like, when I single-click something, Mission Control launches. Grrrr. Anyhoo, in addition to the suggestions here, I have found that the bluetooth trackpad really likes fresh batteries. In fact, I've seen my trackpad problems go away entirely when I put in new batteries, and the battery level is back up to 100%. I've also seen the trackpad do fine when the battery level is down at 10%, but, when those problems start happening, fresh batteries have done the trick every time. It's as if a stronger bluetooth signal clears out the confusion. Oh, and, somewhat ironically perhaps, I have re-chargeable batteries that I bought from the Apple store online, and, those seem to cause the problem more often than traditional batteries, too.
Oh, and there's this KB article from Apple, too:

  • To anyone who has had the trackpad problem and had it replaced...

So if anyone has had the trackpad problem where it doesn't click or erratically doesn't move the cursor, and HAS gone to the apple store and had it fixed, does your new one work properly now?
I have an appointment this evening to have it looked at (and probably replaced) but if this is a consistent problem with all models, its not going to fix it. I am wondering if I should wait until Apple catches on to this, and does something about it.
    Anyone have any success stories?

My suggestion would be to KEEP your MacBook. There are several other discussions with the same issue.
It seems as though this issue is widespread.
Why copy data, wipe the old one clean, trade out for a new MacBook, transfer all the data BACK .... only to find your issue unresolved?
It's not worth the hassle. My guess? Apple will issue a firmware update for the trackpad issue.

  • Reinstalled 10.6.3 and success! No more trackpad problems

So, after dealing with the freezing trackpad issue for a couple of days, I decided I'd just reinstall snow leopard from scratch. Backed up my hard drive using time machine.... installed 10.6, then the 10.6.3 combo update, then used migration assistant to migrate all of my software from the latest time machine backup, and now... a system running perfectly Everything boots. No trackpad problems.
Rather than wait for apple to come up with a bug fix, this is a solution. I'm just happy that Apple has such great tools for backing up your important data.

Did the issue occur between when you had installed the 10.6.3 update and when you migrated your data back. It could be something in your user files that's causing the issue. Just a thought.
Does the issue happen in safe mode?

  • Serious Trackpad Problem

I have a 2007 13 inch macbook that is having some major trackpad problems. Its almost seems as though the button is stuck down, causing me to accidentally highlight things then drag them around the desktop then not allowing me to let go of it. You can imagine how frustrating it is. Well, my Apple care ran out a couple of months ago and I'm not sure what to do. any suggestions?

Hi...just run it without the battery installed....take a look at the battery and see if it is swollen or misshaped (doesn't seem to fit right anymore)....if you need a new battery check these people...

  • Waking up and trackpad problem

    Hi,
My 2001 PB ti has run faultlessly, daily, up until last night. It developed a trackpad problem whereby sometimes there was a few seconds lag between input and action and other times it sped along faster than normal. I tried restarting, I fiddled with the trackpad settings, I found advice on this forum for resetting the trackpads on later PBs - and tried it anyway, but to no avail. I checked it with a mouse and the mouse inputs behaved normally.
Now this morning I noticed it has also developed a problem waking up. Several times it has taken many minutes. Once I even hit the power button thinking it must have crashed but no it was just taking a long time to wake. This afternoon when waking the screen came on quickly enough but there was no cursor visible for several minutes. This leads me to believe both problems are connected.
    Any suggestions gratefully received
    tia
    Michael

    An update:
This sounds like it might be connected. I put it to sleep using the power button and selecting "sleep" and when I closed the screen it woke up again. When I re-opened the screen the Mac was running but the screen was black. Tapping keys or touching the trackpad failed to activate the screen. Eventually I had to press and hold the power button.

  • Trackpad Problem: Hardware or Software?

I've been using 'Tap to Click' since I got my MacBook, and it's been working very well.
But yesterday I unchecked the 'Tap to Click' in Trackpad System Preference and found that my Trackpad couldn't click anything. I am sure I did press the trackpad and I haven't installed any Applications related to the trackpad.
Is there anyone having the same problem?
Is my trackpad problem caused by the hardware itself or just the software?
Should I send my MacBook to an Apple Retail Store to have it repaired?
    Thanks.
P.S. Please forgive my poor English. I am not a native speaker.

How much free RAM do you have?  What percentage of free harddrive space?

  • Pearl 9105 trackpad problem

    Hi,
My trackpad keeps locking or sticking and stops me from moving either up or down or left to right. Most  times if I turn my phone off and on again it solves the problem. However I have had to do that 3 times today and I'm a little cheesed off! Should I contact my carrier to get it checked? Its only a month or two old
    Thanks!

I had the same problem, from the login screen I could not scroll down to any other option but the 'Unlock' button and navigation was limited. But scrolling down within the email application worked fine.
But for me; I solved it.
Check the buttons on the very top of the phone. The Play\pause, skip forward, skip back buttons.
    |<<  >||  >>|
Can you press and unpress all of these buttons? For me the button was held down by the casing (perhaps from an earlier small fall) on the right hand side. By releasing the button (pushing back the casing) on the top of the phone the trackpad problem was resolved. So check the buttons on the top of the phone and not the tracker-pad as a potential source to the problem.
To experience the problem, (i.e. for Blackberry Support) just hold down any one of the buttons on top of the phone and then try and use the phone.

  • Trackpad problems since 10.6.4

hi im having major trackpad problems since ive updated.
its become highly unresponsive to clicking and when i try to copy and paste, it no longer does this after the initial highlight ie. once ive made a selection and stop moving cursor, without unclicking/releasing trackpad, i can no longer move the highlighted section. it also does this when i move an app around onscreen, once i stop moving the cursor i no longer have the item clicked.
its making me actually hate my macbook pro, which ive only had for 3 months. anyone got any suggestons on a fix?

Yikes ... I haven't run into these problems with my MBP, at least not yet, but they do seem to be somewhat common complaints. There is a similar thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2501644&tstart=0
But really, the best advice, especially for a new unit, is to go have it looked at at the Mac Store. They will know immediately if there's a defect or problem, and they're not going to recommend part replacement or other repairs just for the heck of it, only if there's a real problem that can be addressed via repair.

  • HP Envy m6 trackpad problems

    Hi there.
I am hoping you guys can give me a little bit of help.
I purchased a new HP Envy m6 from Best Buy in May. For the first couple of weeks everything was fine, but after that the trackpad stopped working completly. It wasn't that big of a deal because I dont use the trackpad that often, I use a wireless mouse. However, In June the hard drive completly crashed and wouldn't load at all. I took it back to Best Buy and they sent it to HP to get the Hard drive replaced. I went back home to the UK and my fiance picked up the computer and it has been sitting doing nothing since coming back from the workshop. I turned it on for the first time when I got back to the States, and the trackpad still does not work. I have been through the control panel and everything on there seems to be fine, all the other USB ports work fine, the keyboard works fine, but the trackpad, no matter whar I do, will not work at all. It is like it has been disconnected.
Have you heard of this problem before and if so how do i fix it?
    Luke

    Tonkaturn,
    Welcome to the HP Forum!
    You might try the following:
    Perform the Hard Reset
As soon as you power on the notebook, repeatedly click the ESC key to bring up the Startup Menu
Select F10 to launch the BIOS menu
Depending on your BIOS, you will click F5 or F9 to load the default settings – then use the arrow keys to Select “Yes” and then click “Enter”
Press F10 to save the Settings – then use the arrow keys to Select “Yes” and click “Enter”
There are a few "software" fixes available to sort this.
Take a look at the following; see if you find anything of use.
Find, open, and read the files named:
    Fix TouchPad / ClickPad
    Enable / Disable TouchPad
If all efforts fail to dislodge the TouchPad from its eternal sleep, then you may have to think about calling HP Technical Support (which we are not).  As sad as it is to contemplate, the hardware may be at fault.  You still have warrant on the unit that should include hardware repairs should it be necessary.
    Worldwide Support Portal

What if you REALLY are not ready to make the Call to HP?
If the thought of sending the computer in for another repair causes undue stress, you might try backing up everything reinstalling the Operating System.  Should you have Windows 8 on that computer, you have some good options, including using a Custom Refresh.
The Custom Refresh is discussed in the file named:
    Windows 8 Features – A Quick Tour
If you do Refresh (restore the system) and THAT doesn't fix it, then you can make that call to HP.
Good Luck!  I hope this helps you resolve the issue with that stubborn TouchPad.
    Kind Regards,

  • Macbook Pro Trackpad problem

    Hi,
A month back, I purchased a MacBook Pro 13" and am a new Mac user.  I was delighted by the way the trackpad operations were so smooth.  After use for about a week or two, I installed Parallels Desktop to run windows applications. I found that the trackpad does not work to its fullest in Windows so I installed a Microsoft COmpact Optical Mouse 500 v 2.0.  THe next two days went off well.  But suddenly when i started my MBP one day, the cursor started dancing around, even when Parallels was not running.  I could not properly use the gestures or they were not working at all.  After an hour or so, the trackpad was back to normal but was so shortlived and again the cursor started become jumpy.  I had to revert to using the MS mouse.  This erratic behaviour has now become normal.  I have searched for help topics including by Apple regarding jumpy and erratic trackpad operation, but none helped.  I am from India, and the Apple support here seems to be absent as there is no call back facility nor any helpline. I am still under Technical support and Warranty but dont know whom to call.
Can anyone guide me as to how can i self solve and / or any way to contact Apple support in India.
    Thanks all in advance.

    Nshevade,
I believe that the trackpad working when you are at home and not when you are in th office is merely a coincidence. The hardware/software for your trackpad and Wi-Fi are completely independant of eachother and could not affect eachother. Your best option is to ultilize your one year AppleCare Protection Plan. The support is 24/7. You can visit them on the web at www.apple.com/support in the US or 1-800-275-2273.
If you wanted to do a little testing to figure out if this is hardware or software you can always make a system state backup with time machine. Once the you Mac is backed up with time machine you can restore the Mac to factory condition and see if the trackpad works properly. If this solves the issue you know the problem is software related, if not then you will definately want Apple to replace/repair your Macbook before the warranty expires. If they do exchange your machine you will grateful you have the time machine backup anyways! :-)
    Best of luck!

  • Keyboard/trackpad problems - are Macbook top cases too fragile?

I'm starting to wonder if the top case with keyboard/trackpad is the Achilles heel of the black and white Macbooks 2007-08. I'm having problems with 3 different Macbooks.
On one, a 2.1Ghz from 2008, no internal keyboard/trackpad is recognized by the Macbook. Its original kb/tp just stopped working one day. I removed the top case and checked the connections, as well as any dust or bent pins in the socket on the logic board, but all seemed ok. Reassembled, but kb/tp still not working. I then replaced the top case with another one that I knew was working, but still no go.
Any ideas? The MB boots fine (even with the original top case installed) and works great with external kb/mouse.
On a second, a 2.16Ghz from 2007, the kb/tp suddenly stopped working one day. I'd opened the MB a couple of times just before, but I'm pretty careful and don't think I broke the cable or anything else. All the pins and the cable seem fine, as does the socket on the logic board. Here too, an external mouse/kb work perfectly.
I tried another working top case and this time it seemed to work okay. But after a day or two, it stopped working too. I then reassembled it, thinking there might be something pushing up on the keyboard, or maybe some screws loose. And once again it seemed to work.
I also noticed something odd: a couple of times at first, when I'd just reassembled the top case, the kb/tp weren't recognized. But then when the MB woke from Sleep, I heard the hard drive and DVD spin up, and suddenly the kb/tp were working again.
Anyway, after a couple of days the kb/tp stopped working again.
Question: how can the kb/tp work for a couple days, then suddenly stop working? If it were broken, wouldn't it always not work?
The 3rd Macbook is a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo from early 2007. Its kb/tp stopped working too (unrecognized by system, etc.). I swapped the kb/tp from the 2008 2.1Ghz onto it and this seems to have fixed the problem. It's been a few weeks now and I haven't had any trouble with it.
Question: would swapping in the top cases from different models create any problems? I see that they sometimes aren't perfect fits in terms of looks, but the screws are in the same place and everything installs pretty solidly. IIRC you have to be careful re. mixing top cases with an orange trackpad cable and a silver one, but in my case all of them had silver cables.
This is really getting to be a problem. I've got the 2 fast well-upgraded Core 2 Duo Macbooks sitting here, working perfectly apart from the kb/tp.
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Sorry, just wanted to add in concluding that there seem to be 2 different problems.
    1) with the 2.1Ghz from 2008, no working top case seems to work, so it doesn't seem to be a top case problem, but rather a problem with the connection to the logic board or somewhere else.
    2) with the 2.16 from 2007, here it does seem to be a problem with the top case.
Unfortunately I don't have what I know to be a good, working top case to try on the 2.16. I think with all the assembling/disassembling, the semi-decent kb/tp I had may now have problems too.
