U410 booting slow and windows app slow

My Lenovo U410 is taking a lot longer to boot up nowadays (5-7mins) compared to when I purchased it less than a year ago (about 20 seconds).
I think the mSATA (24GB) is not working properly, but I am not 100% sure.
From other threads and other sources on the internet, I have tried the following things.
Downloaded HDTune and ran Error Check
 - Got 1340 disck errors by the 83 MB mark in 3hrs of scanning.  Decided to abort since scanning the full 24GB would take too long.
BIOS
 - Rapid Start was Enabled, but the iRST PARTITION STATUS was INVALID, but SATA controller mode was AHCI (when I tried to change to RAID, the system would report an error on startup and be stuck in a restart loop)
Also read that Lenovo uses expresscache (does it not use intel rapid start technology?)
 - type command eccmd.exe -info
 - returned HFS volume not mounted **ERROR** eccmd exited with error 0x45d (1117)
However, my computer seems to be able to detect the 24GB mSATA.  It also passes a chkdsk.
Another problem I am having is with Windows applications.  For example, when i try to run msconfig it takes 5mins to load a simple and small program.
In the recent past, Windows wouldn't restart (just hangs there), windows installer wouldn't install some programs (just hangs), but it seem to fix itself recently.
I am hoping for steps to restore my original boot time. (do i look to install expresscache or intel rapid start?)
Is there anything anybody could suggest?  Is there a definitive way to check if the mSATA is defective?

hi leon09,
In addition to what have already been suggested, I'm positive that the cause of the slow boot-up is the SSD drive. The 1340 disk errors that you received after running an error scan on the SSD proves that the SSD needs to be replaced.
If you're still able to boot into Windows, try to go to the Control Panel (large icon view) > Programs and Features and uninstall Diskkeeper Expressache. After uninstallation, reboot the PC and observe.
For the SSD, you may need to contact lenovo for service on how to go about getting the SSD replaced.
If you purchase the laptop in Canada, here's the number:

Yes, I think most of us do understand what open source software is. It sounds as if you don't. Here's some information:
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved forcopyright holders are provided under an open-source license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software.
Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-sourcedevelopment and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.

Yes, Tom Wu of Stanford wrote a paper on something called Secure Remote Access Protocol. It's a form of Asymetric Key Exchange and has nothing to do with hacking anything. It's actually intended to protect data.

io6 update lost Youtube in my iPad and is really slow and Facebook is slow and don't what to upload photo the iPad is slow to.

Youtube is no longer integrated with iOS. You can download the app fromt he app store.. it's designed for iPhone... but states that it works with iPad.
As for running slow... trying holding down the power and home button at the same time for 10 seconds to do a hard reset.
Also.. if you double tap your home button it will bring up a small window across the bottom of your screen... this is called the multitasker.
Hold your finger one of the apps til they jiggle... then tap the red minus button to kill the app. If you kill them all this should help your ipad run alot faster.
    Good luck

  • Lion, Boot Camp and Windows 7 Issues

Couple of questions regarding Lion, Boot Camp and Windows 7... I never had issues with Snow Leopard and setting up Windows 7 on my iMac (expcept the dreaded black screen after restart, bu got that fixed)
Let me start off with my specs and then I will ask my questions:
    iMac 27"
    i7 Quad Core (1st gen)
    16GB Ram
    1TB HDD
OS X Lion (Fresh Install - Not Upgrade)
All updates for OS and iLife and other installed software:
    Adobe Creative Suite CS5
    MS Office 2011
    Boot Camp 4.0
    Window 7 Ultimate
    Ok... here are my questions.
When I fixed my black screen issues after installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 - I had to install MacFUSE and Tuxera NTFS in order to delete the the stock ATI driver so the second rebot on the install of windows 7 would work and boot correctly. After rebotting into my mac side I now always get this message from Tuxera.
What does this mean? Now in the finder when looking at the computer drives.. It does not show the BOOTCAMP partition...
However, when I resart i can hold down the ALT key and get this menu:
I know this might seem strange to ask, but why are the Macintosh HD and the Recovery HD text smoothed and the Windows text not? Being a design I see the difference and it makes me wonder why this is. (It is almost like the BSOD icon apple used forwhen connecting with shared PCs)... Anyways, I can boot into windows when clicking this drive.
After getting to windows 7 it will not let me run updated. The OS is activated and I have even installed SP1 manually, but it always tells me that the Update service is not running. When in fact it is. I have checked it and it is set to start automatically. I have reset and shutdown my computer more than 10 times... I can't figure out what the issues are.
    Overview:
Why do I get the Tuxera NTFS error?
Why can I see the boot camp partion when manually selecting it form startup, but it does not show in OS X
I can't get Windows to update? Any ideas?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

These various utilities like Tuxera are incompatible with Lion. Partly because MacFuse is incompatible. You need to remove them completely.
As for the Windows partition you might consider using Boot Camp Assistant to remove it. Then make a new partition and install Windows. Remember to use the Windows formatter to format the Windows partition NTFS.

  • Boot Camp and Windows 7 Problems

I have found a reproducible bug with Boot Camp and WIndows 7.
Clean install of OS X 10.6.2, Boot Camp Asst. Partition on my Mac Pro boot drive, clean install Win 7.
Problem: while in OS X, Disk Util Repair Permissions takes forever, churning away at the hard drive. Also, intermittent Spotlight hangs, and weird Dropbox behavior where it churns the disk like crazy again.
I have Paragon NTFS for Mac v 7.03 and perhaps this has something to do with it.
After retuning to a single partition using Boot Camp Asst. (deleting the Win 7 partition), all is back to normal - Repair Permissions takes about 60 seconds, no Spotlight or Dropbox issues whatsoever.
Using Fusion for Win 7 for now. Awaiting official Apple support of Win 7 in Boot Camp.
Wondering if anyone else can confirm this behavior where you have a partitioned boot drive with 10.6.2 and Win 7, with or without NTFS for Mac 7.03.

Addendum: on reboot/option key boot screen, it showed OS X volume, Win 7 Volume, and EFI Boot Volume - the latter had never been there before with Vista.

  • Unable to install Boot Camp and Windows 8.1 on Mac Mini

    Hello,
My computer is a late 2012 mac mini with fusion drive. OS is OSX 10.9.1. Also an apple external optical drive and a Windows 8.1 full install DVD. I attempted to install Boot Camp and Windows 8.1 and failed.
I ran Boot Camp Assistant and first problem was when it rebooted the computer - I got a text message that said the OS was missing. After a while I tried holding down the Option key while rebooting, then I got several choices to boot from - I chose the windows disk, and windows installation started.
I was eventually given a list of 6 or 7 partitions to chose from, to install windows into. I  settled on the one marked BOOTCAMP. It seemed the best guess. But the installer said that it could not install on this partition. Something about the wrong format or EFI or boot partition(s)?? In fact, the installer would not let me install into any of the listed partitions.
I restarted Boot Camp and it allowed me to remove the boot camp partition and revert to OSX only. Thanks for that!
My questions: is Windows 8.1 supported with my configuration? I know the FAQ says it is not. If in fact it is, did I do something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Poking around, I found an installation manual which was downloaded to my USB drive with the boot camp windows drivers. It says that when I reached the point in the windows installer where I'm given a choice of partitions, I should choose the one marked BOOTCAMP, and format it. Which I didn't think to try before. So I tried again, using Boot Camp Assistant from the top.
Failure again. This time, when the computer rebooted, I selected the Windows icon as before, but I got a text message saying that the boot manager couldn't be found, and a dead stop.
I also found that on the option-key reboot disk selection screen, I could eject the windows install disk and reinsert it. When I did that, I got the Windows boot icon and another icon labeled EFI boot. So I also tried that icon, with the same result.
So, I'm doing exactly what I did before (I think), but now the windows installer won't start.

I have an older Mac Pro (2006). I want to install Boot Camp and Windows. I have installed a boxed Snow Leapord on the machine. And it says the download of the Boot camp drivers cannot continue because they are not available. But at that point I have not inserted a windows disk, so how does it know i have XP?
So it appears I am limited to Windows 7? And where are the Windows 7/Boot Camp Drivers? On the OS disk?
Finally, since I have necer considered Windows 7 before, I assume there are no compatability issues with mainstream applications that were running in XP?
    Thank you.

    You're welcome
Just remember to reformat the partition (bootcamp partition) to NTFS with the windows installer, ensure to pick the correct partition.

  • [Success] Dual Booting Arch and Windows 7 [Advice / Confirmation]

So I have been trying to get Starcraft II to work with wine and no luck.
I have decided to install windows back on my computer, besides it might come in handy since I'm heading back to school soon.
Anyways I have tried dual booting arch and windows in the past, and my results have never been stable.
Today I will try using the program gparted.
Let me give you my thoughts on how I plan to go through this and please give me some advice so I don't loose everything I have worked for on my linux box
1.Currently I have two hard drives, one for all my main programs and one for my media files (mounting usb, dvd, etc, and it actually has no files in it xD).
I plan to use gparted to re-size my second harddrive (media drive), create an extended partition, and a logical ntfs partition within it.
2.I pop in my windows cd that I recieved with my laptop and install it on the space I have partitioned for windows.
    3. If my grub gets wiped out my windows (which I hope it doesn't not sure how the MBR stuff works) I insert a Ubuntu live cd and do
    sudo grub
    > root (hd0,0)
    > setup (hd0)
    > exit
4.Configure grub to boot windows 7.
    5.Be happy with no headache.
    SO....
If someone with past experience with dual booting windows and arch could please give me some advice, as I do not want to lose all my data, start over, and have another headache.
I know I must learn to backup arch, which I will before september.
But if anyone has any protips, or sees a flaw in my plan please point it out!!!
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and even more if advice has been given to boost my confidence!
    For now I will wait
    Thank you fellow archies.

    1) Windows must be installed to a primary partition - attempting to install it to an logical partition will result in an epic fail
    2) Physically disconnect the harddrive you do not want windows on as windows typically installs the bootloader on the 1st hardisk (ie /sda) regardless of installation drive (ie /sdb)
3 / 4) Complete the windows installation then reattached your Arch drive and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst (as root) pointing the W7 entry to (hd1,0) - no need to reinstall grub
    5) Hey it's windows - anything could happen
If you create an NTFS partition right at the beginning of the the drive before you start the W7 install you can prevent it greedily using up 2 of you 4 primary partitions - I would also completely update you new W7 installation past SP1 before reattaching the other drive to further prevent W7 going mental
    satanselbow thank you so much!
Everything works great I had no stumbles, and I hope no problems in the future!!
I will post exactly what I did in case someone has the same issue.
    1. Partition you're secondary harddrive as primary ntfs with gparted
    2. Reboot, and if you get a file system check error, check you're udev rules. (For my case in particular I had to change the udev rules I got for auto mounting usb, ext harddrive, etc.
3.Power off your computer and physically remove the harddrive that contains all your linux goodies
    4. Plug in your windows cd and install in the partition you created
    5. Update your windows OS
    6. Plug in Ubuntu live CD and reboot
    7. Use commands to get grub to overwrite the windows boot loader (In my case I put grub everyone hd0,0 hd0,1 just to be sure, but you might want to do things cleaner)
    8. Reboot and see if grub loads up
    9. Use Ubuntu live CD again and launch Gparted, select the boot to your extra linux space (if you had one, not sure if this is needed)
    10. Plug in your linux harddrive and reconfigure /boot/grub/menu.lst and your good to go
Once again shout outs to satanselbow!!! For without him I might've failed brutally!
    Cheers!

  • Boot Camp and Windows XP Questions

I have a new intel iMac and want to install Windows XP (just for kicks, really). I have a copy of a Windows XP disc that I bought for my dad a couple of years ago. The Boot Camp page says that you have to have Windows XP with Service Pack 2. How do I know if my XP has Service Pack 2?? I went to the windows home page, and one can download Service Pack 2, but the Boot Camp instructions seem to imply that you have to have a copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 2. Anyone have any insight? Will my XP work?

I forgot to back-up my information (pictures, excel documents) on MAC before installing boot camp and Windows.  I am mid-way through the process, at the point where I need to install the drivers. Will i be able to retrieve my documents on MAC and finalizing the Windows 7 installation (for the 1st time) or not?
I am worried that  may lose my information... Appreciate any feedback! Note: already half-way in the process of installing!

Yes, IF you picked the right partition, as in the Boot Camp partition. If everything is done right you should be able to boot into the Mac side.
If you already booted into Windows and are at the point of installing the Boot Camp Drivers your already done installing Windows! Yea! All you need to do is just install the drivers and everything should work normal.
The Windows partition and the Mac partition are seen as two different HD's now as far as the computer knows.
You can use the Boot Camp control panel in Windows to boot into the Mac side and the Startup Disk in System Preferences on the Mac to switch to Windows. If you can't then press and hold down the Option key untill you get the boot screen.

  • IMac running slow and windows partition not showing

I have an iMac 12.1, 2.5 ghz, i5, 4 gb ram,  500 gb hd (41 gb used) running 10.7.4.  We installed windows parallel and windows 7 about three months ago. We rarely used windows and now windows doesn't work, although the icons are there. I tried to uninstall via boot camp and the partition does not show. The iMac is now running extremely slow except when running in safe mode.
How can I delete or reinstall windows and speed up the iMac?
    Thank you

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when you try to launch Parrallels Desktop.
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.
